[Q] usb 3.0 never works - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi everyone!
its been a while since i have posted here [was lost in the apple wilderness for a few years]
i have an n9005 and my laptop is samsung 5 series ultrabook with windows 8.1 64bit running, this lappy has one usb 3.0 port
i have never managed to connect the note in 3.0 mode, this happened only once by accident when the phone also notitifed me that it is connected in 3.0 usb mode but never after that.
the usb 3.0 port charges the phone fine but does not show it as been connected to the computer, not in device manager or anywhere else, 2.0 works fine.
ill be grateful if anyone can shed some light on this for me, apologies if im breaking any rules!
Thanks.

Since you said you had connection once by accident, I would start with basics: try another cable and make sure ports are fine. charging uses only 2 wires, all the rest is for data. On my Note 3 USB port is very finicky when using USB3 cable even for charging, I have to wiggle and push hard to get it to charge, USB2 cable works fine, so I'm not even sure if its phone port or Samsung cable, just waiting for it to fail altogether before trouble shooting.

The USB 3 thing is quite stupid from Samsung - but it makes some sense if you think of it as 99% marketing on top of which some guys decided to provide some form of emergency help but without compromising other things too much
Bottom line - USB3 is not active by default! Once you have it plugged it only goes to USB2 and you need to go to Notifications and click on "Connected as a media device" - and then modify that to "MTP on USB3" or something like that. That checkbox will NOT stick (so next time you will NOT be in USB3 mode) and will also be converted back to USB 2 after 10 minutes (I presume 10 minutes of inactivity, since otherwise that would be very, very stupid, but nothing will surprise me on that).
Whatever you saw on the PC it was most likely a message telling you that the device might be performing faster in a USB3 port - even if you already were plugged in a USB3 port What Windows wanted to say was more along the lines "the device might perform better in USB 3 mode"

I'm not sure where did you get the idea of USB3 being a gimmick, or stupid, but it is neither. I was just copying my pictures folder to my computer, 170MB worth took instant on USB3, where it took over 10 sec using USB 2, I wish all gimmicks worked that well.
Yeah, you have to activate it on the phone, like you have to activate MTP or PTP mode, maybe for compatibility with some obscure software, who knows. BTW I read somewhere USB3 does work on Win only , so all bets off if you have Mac.

Big words from somebody that two posts above did not even feel the need to mention that USB3 needs to be MANUALLY activated EACH TIME
That being said for your own example above - you "gained" 10 seconds to transfer those files, and you lost 10 seconds since you had to activate USB3 mode (which generated a delay not only since you had to activate it on the phone but also since the PC had to re-detect the device). That is precisely the definition of a gimmick
Yes, USB might be interesting one-time when you will really need to transfer 10 gbytes of data quickly from your internal storage (which I don't use that much anyway), but before that you really need to know how to activate this
And keep in mind that for the "external microSD" there is no real difference in speed (but a very large one in heat and power consumption).

USB on PC not working.. tried everything in threads..

So I can't get my desktop OR laptop running XP Pro 32 to even recognize the phone. As in no audio plays and nothing appears in the system tray. Tried with/without debugging mode, installed the samsung drivers etc. The phone doesn't even show up in device manager at all- not even as something unrecognizable. Its as if the port is dead. The phone does 'ding' though and charge ok so it is receiving power... though nothing at all appears in the android notification tab when connected. Any ideas or anyone know of any apps on the pc or android side to take a closer look at whats happening on the bus?
The only way that I can get it to work is to put it in media mode. It shows up as a media device in Win7. If I put it on, "ask every time" or whatever it doesn't work and in mass storage mode it shows up as two unreadable drives, they are grayed out in Explorer... Basically...don't use the "ask every time" for USB function.
This function seems like such a simple thing, not sure why Samsung has so many issues with it considering they have been making media devices for a long time.
Anyway... do you have access to a newer OS to at least rule that out as a cause. Not saying it shouldn't work with XP 32 but just something to check out.
I was having similar issues at first. I take it adb doesn't work either? Well my fix was to delete my whole Android SDK folder, then I redownloaded it (though I just kept the "tools" folder this time). Then I downloaded "USBDeview" (google it) to delete every USB driver that had to do with android (basically just left the printers, HID, and my Sansa drivers), restarted, then I downloaded the samsung drivers from the thread on here, plugged my phone in and manually pointed the driver search to the drivers.
ADB and Mass Storage has been working fine since. All I can tell you is to keep checking cause there's something you're missing, I also thought to myself "what the heck else can I do?" since I had done each one of those steps previously, but maybe I just had to do them all together. Good luck.
another possible solution is to change cables if you're not using the samsung provided cable - some cables are charger only (no data) - some of the motorola cables are charger only and we've already had one poster that had that issue
I couldn't get it to work at first either. I more or less did this.
I plugged in my phone. I did not enable mass storage mode on my phone. Walked away and let my PC think for a while. I came back and I noticed I had two new drives. I then enabled mass storage mode and could connect.
Two of my machines I had to do this. I'm not sure why it wasn't instant, but it just took a bit of patience and walking away from the machine to let it think for a while before I guess it installed the drivers and made its peace with the fact it wasn't the G1 any more.
Say into voice dialer "Open SD card" -> check "Enable USB mass storage". That works if port on PC is OK.
If it's a driver issue, open device manager and uninstall the usb ports. Unplug everything from usb and when you reboot the computer it will automatically reinstall the usb ports.
Sent from my Vibrant
I ran into the same issue. It was a problem with the USB cable I was using. As soon as I tried a different cable it worked fine.

I second this, I forgot my sammy cable at work on Friday and on way home stopped at T-Mo and picked up a charger w/cable and realized right away this was just a charging cable as soon as I connected it to my PC. I'm returning the cable back to T-Mo tonight. At least I was able to charge my phone over the weekend.
UPDATE: You guys are right, it is the goddamn cables! I bought an extra wall charger + cable at the t-mobile store and was using that at home. I had left the original in-box cable at work. Tried the cable at work today and now the drives pop up. Still don't appear writeable but I can look into that when I have time, probably the typical driver issue. As far as I can tell those separate cables are power only! $15 for a two wires + dc adapter. Thanks Samsung. Grr.
i suspect the mfgrs have gone to charge only cables to help keep folks from tethering - just a suspicion
if the "drives" are popping up, have you "mounted" the phone (pull down notification bar, clik on USB connected and it should give you a window asking to mount the cards or drive)
FYI....The Rocketfish cables you get from Best Buy do not work. They are only capable of charging.
@larryccf...I don't think certain manufacturers are implementing this on purpose so we can't tether. I think their just being cheap.
Where I got my cables on the cheap! and my problem.
I got my cable at monoprice.com. Check it out that is a 10 foot usb cable for $1.69 and it works for me. They have different lengths and even some colors. Now my Mass Storage issue . . .
My Mass Storage via USB works fine unless I enable "USB Debugging" which one of my apps needs to work. Once debugging is enabled I loss the ability to see my sd card and internal storage on my XP netbook. any ideas????
Same Problem
I have the exact issue, tried many things have'nt found a fix yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks,
crx

Yes phone is mounted, and can be seen w/o usb debugging enabled. However with usb/debugging on it does not read the phone being connected. Meaning that I cannot connect to ADB which is my main concern.

If you are running windows (x86 or x64), it would be wise to install the samsung drivers. I was having this exact problem, but as soon as I installed the drivers from samsung, viola!
I had the latest drivers from google, and they did not work for me.
Here is a link to the thread containing the links to the drivers, thanks to TGA_Gunnman:

Nexus 7 Not Showing Up In Device Manager

Let me start by stating that I have read through pages of various threads on here & haven't found an answer... Or at least I haven't found an answer in laymen's terms that I can understand. So, if/when offering help, please break it down for me a little. Thank you!!
I just purchased a Nexus 7. When I plug it in to my Windows 7 PC, nothing happens. It doesn't install any device drivers. It doesn't appear anywhere in my device manager. Nothing. After reading several posts, I downloaded drivers from Asus's site, but now I don't know how to install them. I came across this comment from "MrTrackZed" in another thread (one I can't yet post in):
"After you download the driver, unzip/extract its contents. Then you go to your device manager on your PC, and plug in your Nexus. You'll see it with a yellow exclamation point, right click it and select update driver. You can then select this driver manually. Also, if using Wug's root method, make sure you configure the fastboot driver as well. I don't have my PC with me, but I believe its step 6 in the driver install process. Its all very easy, sounds confusing, but its not. Good luck! "
I totally understand that, but what do I do if the device isn't even showing up in the device manager? I've plugged it in to 3 different computers (2 windows 7 & one Windows XP) and it does nothing on any of them. The device does show that it's charging, but nothing else. Please help. This is driving me nuts. Oh, and I've done all of this while having debugging on & off. Same results.
~Clint
U may just have a bad device! I have seen posts similar to this and after a device exchange they have no problems.
The fact that It doesn't register on three different computers means that or a bad cable.

When you plugin your phone, on your phone, you need to click USB Storage, did you do that?
Another thing to try is to enable Debuging on your phone, and install drivers, to check if device manager can detect it.
We have a package contains the right drivers for your device, you may want to download and try it. We have Nexus 7 users works fine.

This is for our vmlite vnc server, but it may help you, as it installs USB drivers.

I did as you suggested & installed both the PC client & downloaded the app from google play. Still nothing... The device works perfectly except for this one issue. It's making me crazy!
can you run this command to debug? (open a command window on Windows)
"c:\program files\vmlite\AndroidAppController\adb.exe" devices
what is the output message?
It just occured to me that some USB cable is charging only, this morning, I got such a cable, there is no USB device showing up in device manager with that USB cable, once I switched to another data cable, it works.
You may want to change to another usb cable to test.
Problem Identified
Okay, so after much research, I think the problem has been identified. The one thing that I've found in common with all the threads that discuss this problem is that we've all, at one point or another, used a USB car charger to charge our N7. I've found that most cheap USB chargers only put out at about 1 amp. The N7 is trying to pull 2 amps. This is causing the USB cable to overheat & damage the USB connector on the N7. Unfortunately, once the damage is done, it's done. Fortunately for me, I purchased my N7 at a local retailer that had a 30 day return policy & they gave me a new N7. It works great & I've ordered a 2.1 amp USB car charger to prevent this from happening in the future.

Thank you for the reply, but I am using the OEM N7 USB cable. Plus, I used 3 other cables to no avail. See my previous comment though. I've identified the error.
Sorry for the bump, but are you saying that (under)charging at 1A essentially breaks the N7? Wow. You'd think it would break if you'd feed it 5A or so, not at less than 2!
I think I'm having the same issue now. I can charge, but no debugging for me since my computer doesn't even notice a USB device. Must have happened in my car once when I was trying to charge my phone and my N7 at the same time. (Since then I can't charge any phone at all in the car using that charger.) Let's see if I can find the warranty slip.

[Q] USB 3 Problems

Help with USB 3.0 Please!!!!!
Hi,
Can anyone help me to enable USB 3 please on the Note 3?
I have an ASUS Sabertooth AM3+ Motherboard with 2xUSB 3 ports on the back.
I know these work as I have other USB3 devices that work through them, but for the life of me I can't seem to get this note 3 to even recognise on the PC.
I have updated the drivers on PC but no change.
I have enabled developer options on the note 3 but still no change.
I have contacted Samsung customer services and they haven't got a clue.
I have also tried it on another PC with USB3 and 3 different cables.
This is the second note 3 that it has done it on as I sent the first one back as they said it was the phone that was at fault.
Surely I'm not that unlucky to get two phones with this problem and I hope It's me doing something wrong.
Any help given will be much appreciated and thank you in advance.
Tony.
In my bios I have an option for charging through USB 3 while the PC is turned off.
I disabled it and rebooted and it started working.
Upon reading more into the option it looks like it's for the dreaded APPLE iphones/pads/pods to charge while the PC is off or in sleep state.
Looks like it's on by default and the phone still charges.
Happy Days.
Had the same issue...
With an Asus board you can also install the AI Charger+ software from Asus (not available under Windows 8 and 8.1, use Win7 files instead).
Here you can simply switch off 3.0 triple speed charging which immediatley restores the USB MTP connection to the PC.
Once you're done copying files just switch back to quick charge mode and enjoy higher charging speed.
FIXED: USB 3 No media mass storage
I had the same problem, solved it by upgrading to MJ7. Now I get the option to enable USB 3.0 mode and works perfectly fine

[Q] USB Transfer problem/question

On my previous phone, Samsung Droid Charge, all I needed to do in order to transfer files from my computer to the phone was plug it in. It would pop up in Windows Explorer as a external drive and I could copy, drag and drop, etc. whatever files I wanted. Very easy and worked every time.
With my Note 3 I am having trouble. When I plug in the phone, first it shows in Explorer with some odd Samsung files and folders that do not show my phone or card files. If I just let it sit for a few minutes, it usually then disappears from the Windows Explorer directory and then reappears displaying the phone and card directories. Sometimes in order to make it do this, I need to go to the phone settings>Tethering and touch the box that says it is connected as a media device. Then is displays the phone and card directory in Windows Explorer. Why is this process so cumbersome on the Note 3 or am I doing something wrong?
Even going through this process, sometimes the computer will freeze when transferring a data file and then I am stuck starting over.
Thanks for any insight into why this is not working seamlessly for me as it did with my previous phone.
I think it depends a little on your computer configuration - here it is just as straightforward as you described for your previous phone.
One strange thing that I noted is however that my Win7 still tells me it not going in USB3 SuperSpeed even if it is plugged in an USB3 port.

Hmm. That seems odd since I can still plug in the old phone and it works fine. So the computer configuration would seem to be OK. I really think it is something about how windows sees the Note3. The behavior just seems odd to me plus as I said sometimes it does not work at all.

I get it that you checked and you don't have the Note3 in PTP mode but instead in the "normal" MTP mode, and that first time when Windows asked you what to do with the new device you check the "Always do the same" and then selected "Open in Explorer"?
It could still be something related to the USB3 detection - do you get any message on SuperSpeed? Is there any difference if you plug in USB2 or USB3?
And to have more details - what Windows is that?

I don't remember this. I may not have since in the past with the Charge, I never did. Just plugged it in and there it was in Explorer easy as pie.
Using Win 7 Pro
Thanks!
On edit: I now see that when I plug in the phone I can access the setting from the pull down menu. It defaults as connected as usb but then if you wait it eventually is connected as MTP. It is at that point that the initial display in Explorer changes from showing only some odd Verizon files and directories to showing both the phone and the sd card files. Then I can usually drag and drop or copy files. But often in the middle of doing so, the computer freezes. Strange.
I think that once it appears in Explorer we can say the phone is correctly in MTP mode. There might still be a problem depending on what you selected at first connection and eventually depending on other stuff on your Win7 - like the USB drivers, Samsung Kies, Microsoft Media Player or certain antivirus software.

OK - Thanks. I will keep all that in mind and see what I figure out. I suppose it could be any of that, just specifically impacting the Note 3 whereas the Droid Charge for whatever reason is just like plugging in a usb stick.

The only extra difference from Droid to Note is the USB3 part - you should eventually do some tests with other cables, including the USB2 cable you were using with the Droid and the USB3 cable you got with the Note.

Maybe that is it as I did not think it mattered if I used a usb3 cable with the Note 3 since my computers do not have usb3. I have used the same cable with both phones. Actually the same two cables as I use two computers and hook the phones up to both with cables dedicated to each computer. The behavior is the same on both computers so I should have realized that must mean it is either the Note 3 or the fact that I am not using usb3 cables with either computer. But that latter point, if correct, should mean everyone with computers with no usb3 would have the same issue.

USB 3.0 Transfers fail

Hi,
I've been struggling with this problem ever since I've had the Note 3 ( since December). I've been unable to find a solution so am turning to this forum in the hope that someone can shed some light on this.
When I connect via my USB 3.0 port and select MTP (usb 3.0), then try to transfer a file from the note 3 to my pc, the progress bar comes up but sits there at 0% for a while then a message pops up "a device attached to the system is not functioning".
At this point going to other folders reveals no files although the current folder still shows them. This suggest that there is a disconnection of some kind.
Switching back to plain MTP this transfer will work but obviously at usb 2.0 speeds.
I am running Windows 7 and the usb port I have is via a card attached which is an Asus u3S6 (usb 3 / sata 6) card. The chipset on the card is a NEC chip and my other use for it is a bunch of external SATA drives in a USB 3 enclosure. Needless to say there are no problems with running these drives through the ports.
I have Kies 3 installed so any usb drivers needed for the note 3 should be fine. I'm stumped so anyone that can help me troubleshoot this I'd be grateful.

Yes sorry I forgot to add that fact. It makes no difference.
Guess no one knows
i have somewhat similar problem, at some point of usb 3 file transfer the progress bar freezes and so is "my computer". interestingly the file transfer to note from the pc always works fine, but it always freezes at some point when copying files from note to pc, even during kies backup. usb 2.0 works flawlessly.
i've messed around with usb 3 drivers (asmedia) and even updated its firmware but the freezeups still remain.
gonna try usb 3 transfer on a different pc tomorrow.

This sounds like a different problem but I did get to the bottom of my problem which turned out to be the Anker 2 port hub I had connected to the usb 3.0 port. I didn't think to eliminate this but when I connected directly the problem goes away so the hub I had bought purely to extend the ports for convenience is faulty or incompatible.
Perhaps you have an extension or hub too in which case I'd make sure you connect directly.
USB3 seems a bit flaky in implementation. I had probs with my N3, a Corsair USB3 stick and a USB3 ext HDD. Problem turned out to be the ports on the PC. They would work with most devices but were intermittent or non-functional on others. Of course, among the USB3 devices it WOULD work with were the ones the vendor had. For some devices it behaved like the USB3 extra connectors in the plug or socket weren't long enough - push it in harder or push it sideways slightly and it would connect but drop as soon as you let go. (not good to do 0 USB carries power and this is a good way to get an arc across the plug and fry things)
The PC vendor gave me an add-on front port panel and all is fine now. Even though it plugs into the same port on the MB.
Note the USB3 HDD still pops up the 'check drive' error every time I connect but I haven't taken the time to nuke it and rebuild yet. But the Corsair now works and so does the phone.
Ah, the joys of the MTP protocol...
Same issue here. As well as it stops responding halfway through a transfer, crashes the connection when making a new folder, takes about 3 years to copy 1GB, randomly disconnects...
My TF700 started doing this after the 4.1.2 update removed UMS. My S3, same story. My Note 3, same story. 29 different computers, 4 different systems (XP, 7, 8, OSX). Different cables, different ports, with and without drivers, with and without USB debugging.
I bloody hate MTP. It's useless, limiting (because now it can't be used as a drive to attach to a mediaplayer via USB..) and about as stable as nitroglycerin during an earthquake.

I thought I'd give up on hubs and just get an extension as my USB3.0 is on the back of the computer and not that accessible.
I've seen a lot of complaints about hubs and simple extensions that have this poor connectivity which seems crazy to me since it's a bit more important to have a solid connection on USB 3 plugs, besides which it's not as though the usb connectors are rocket science.
I'll try the extension and hope I get a reasonable one.
well i did try the usb 3.0 file transfer on a different pc with a different usb controller and it worked fine, copied my 5gb music folder to the pc without any problems. so in my case i guess it's some incompatibility with the asmedia 104x controller (i did connect directly in both cases and the same cable was used).

It's useless, limiting (because now it can't be used as a drive to attach to a mediaplayer via USB..) and about as stable as nitroglycerin during an earthquake.

it seems like it is indeed MTP issue here ! i rolled back to the old 2006 microsoft driver and i managed to do a full backup including music and everything else with kies. but after a while i tried again and it froze up again, i'll keep experimenting.
Sorry to resurrect this 3 month old thread but is there any way to fix this?
Whenever I want backup anything from my phone storage to PC, I have to do it in chunks of like, 50 files or less (huge PITA with TiBU). If I try to copy the whole folder, my computer locks up and I have to hard reset it. I've tried everything mentioned here short of buying a new USB3 controller.
