I have a 2tb USB powered external hard drive, the phone doesn't have the power output to load it up.
If I was to plug it into the above item, with the item plugged into a power socket, would it power the hard drive without frying it?
Would it also charge the phone /tablet?
Thanks

Work. It is irrelevant to the question though, neither my Windows 8 tablet nor my phone can access it which means I can't give my laptop away until I have a solution - Will this fry the hard drive if I plug it in or should it work just fine?

ook so this might be a bit hard to follow but here goes. ok i got a coffe mug thatkeeps coffee warm its a usb that plugs into either a usb port or a 12v adapter for ciggarette lighter. and i dont have a car charger for my hd2 so i plugged my usb into the 12v adapter witch has obviously a usb in the back you simply plug a usb into ok so i tried this to see if it would charge my phone and it didnt / no big deal soooo i plug my usb into my laptop to charge my phone ...not working not the battery wont hold a charge instead its not even showing the charge icon on the batt indicator like its not plugged in ....thought maybe i messed the usb end of the plug up plugging it into the 12 adapter for the coffee mug so i tried a second plug that had nothing to do with the experiment and its doing the same thing acting like its not even plugged in ...so did i fry somthing? batt is low but seems to be fine phone works fine other than the no charge issue and no anomalies occured when it plugged into the 12v adapter
update when charger plugged in says plug in charger confirming it doesnt know its plugged in

Sounds like you fell victim to the poor quality of the microUSB port on the HD2. If you can, I would re-flash back to WinMo6.5 and send it in for a warranty repair. If not, you're next best choice would be to send it into a 3rd party repair shop. =/ Sorry.
well this is the usb chord im talking about not the microusb

What? You plug the USB cord into the microUSB port and you're not getting any reactions. Sounds like the microUSB port is broken...
nonono ok have coffe mug with usb charger and 12v adapter you plug usb into i plugged usb from my usb data / charging cable into the usb 12v adapter to see if adapter would charge phone and now the phone says plug in charger when already plugged in like its not recognizing the charger is plugged in on both usb data cable i used to try the 12v adapter AND seperate charger that had nothing to do with adapter and the usb charger cable plugs into the phone
oooh ok where i plug the cable into is the microusb port i get it ... ok that seems to be fine to it was working perfect until i tried to use the usb 12v adapter to try charging the phone could the adapter have fried the charger hardware in the phone ?

Possible, the voltage is pretty high and could conceivable short your charging circuit...
All of the USB adapter should be outputting about the same since the USB ports are standardized for electrical output. I suspect your USB data cable could be at fault. If you phone doesn't react to your USB cable being plugged in, you also may want to try pressing one of the hard keys on your phone so that it can realize that you are plugged in via USB. I have that issue with my phone from time to time and just press one of the hard keys so that the phone knows it is plugged in for charging.
that somthin that can be fixed or is that a throw the phone away problem
believe me i tried ...... i pressed all kinds of buttons and no reaction.... and now the battery died so i cant do anything

I wouldn't throw your phone away... Try a 3rd party repair shop - they should be able to fix it for around $70... Expensive, I know, but it's better than spending $500 on a new phone.
they said if a different charger isnt working the phone is a goner

Definitely not true. They don't know what they're talking about and I wouldn't trust them anymore. Try CellularDr.com. I sent my phone in to repair for the exact same problem and it's in the process of getting fixed now. They even have the part to repair it. I've called and talked to them, they can fix it and they don't care about custom ROMs on the phone.
Would a usb cable work for the HD2 if there was only the data+ and data- connection? (no power goes through it, meaning the vcc and gnd pins are unused.
Thanks in advance.
It should be theoritically possible. I mean its just like if you disable power charging on your phone when it's connected to the computer.
Ok thanks for the quick reply
Going to solder a cable now.
noup, i think it won't work since the phone's usb controller is brought online only by applying +5v via usb connector. Without that, the data pins will be inactive.
oh.. bummer
Yeah it doesn't work
Sorry. I was convinced that it will work since i thought the battery will supply the energy required.
No, it do not work! I try it out with a peace of paper inside the plug to cover the outboard pins.
@Abdul9 It doesn't work because even if you disable usb charging in the phone's menu..although the battery isn't charged, power is still being supplied to hd2's motherboard. Based on the usb specifications&standards, usb clients are supposed to have some sort of +5 volt sense circuitry in order to register when voltage is applied and start their internal controller. That also consumes power, actually some 30mA are being drawn from the usb bus in order to power hd2's usb controller (or whatever part of that qualcomm snapdragon chip that is doing that).
This is also valid for any standard usb client/slave device, be it phone or something else.

Old thread, but new and hot for me. I want to use my cellphone as a wifi-hotspot for my laptop on the road, but I don't want to drain my laptop's battery since it is just powerful enough for only the laptop itself during my time on the road: the extra powerconsumption by charging my cellphone-battery would be just too much. And "charging throug usb" can't be switched off in my phone. So I was thinking about cutting the +5V wire in the cable, but that appears to be a bad idea.
But what if I would build a small electronic circuit in the datacable which would limit the current through the +5Vlead to about 50mA? That would be enough to feed the USB-controller in the phone, but it would save my laptopbattery from overconsumption.
What do you think?
hello guys
when i charge my nook with nook's charger ..... the charger become too hot till i feel that my usb connector gonna melt ...... i dont know why .... anyone expert in hardware staff???
thx
Do you have another micro-USB charger you can try? The NST doesn't need the official Nook charger. I've been using my phone's charger with no problems for months.
If another charger also heats up, then I'd worry about your Nook. If not, then I'd worry about your Nook charger.

can u specific me an charger ,,,,, thx
Any charger with a micro-USB plug will work. Here's a generic one from Amazon.
Any standard micro USB to USB cable will charge your nook device. Most power transformers that have a USB output will work, also - I charge my nook off of whatever's to hand. My memory is that the NST chargers are 1 amp or so, but if they don't have access to that much current, the NST will charge a bit slower.
Also, you can use your computer's USB port to charge a nook touch (or a nook color/tablet, but the latter two will charge very slowly that way)
If there's really a problem with the device, rather than the charger, that might make trouble -it wouldn't be the first thing to recommend since it could make trouble for your USB port or your PC as a whole.
Some warming of those transformers is fairly normal, though - I see it with my phone and with my LCD nooks, moreso when they are mostly discharged before I start charging them.
Something is wrong there. Nothing should be getting hot to the touch.
As previously said, try another charger or a USB cable connected to a computer.
Is your Nook still charging correctly? Does it get to 100%?
You can look at the battery actual voltage a few different ways.
UsbMode can show you, so can this command in ADB:
Code:
am start -n com.android.settings/.BatteryInfo

To prevent your Nook from mounting as a Mass Storage Device when you plug it into a PC, do this:

Hey guys just wondering what the speeds/battery would be like if I used a ssd and a otg cable any one tried it yet?
Also, I'm not thinking about stripping a otg cable down to see the power cables' slice'ing them and putting a USB on them the red and black to power the USB drive, and the data cables still in tact so then I could plug the power source in to to say a USB charger at 3v to power let's say a external HD and the otg cable into the HD '
So there would be 2usbs from the otg cable one conexcted to the red and black and the rest
Left as it is to send the data' would this be possible?
Thanks amatris.
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to charge this tablet while simultaniously having a thumb drive attached? I just need a simply low cost Y cable, not a hub. These cables seem to be hard to find which makes me think they don't exist or it is not possible.
