[Q] Power tips for the Acer W700 - Windows 8 General

Does anyone have power tips for the Acer W700? I have the screen brightness down. I'm not using the 'power saver' mode because of an issue with Windows 8.1. After installing 8.1 it began to drag. Let me know if there was an update or something that fixed that and I missed it or something. It seems that soon after I'm running the Acer w700, that its down to 75%. So the next thing to look at is some Acer running software. I don't use the 'Acer Ring', but yes I still have it installed. I've heard it uses some good power. Let me know what other things, others have tried, and had success with? Or should I just be thinking of a new battery?
Thankx,
Robert

[Poll] Are you having problems with your new dock?

I am just curious to see if anyone with the new dock is NOT having any issues...
Asus, hope you're listening...
I see no poll, and no, none D:
I was typing!
Seriously, though, no issues? No wireless drops, no keyboard stopping working, no battery with a ? or anything?
Which firmware are you using?
Did you do a factory restore?
Did you do an update?
Did you do any of the OTA updates?
(Is that enough questions??)

I use wireless all the time between home and campus, no factory restore, both OTA updates then rooted and flashed with PRIME! v1.1 and blob V5. I've used my friends dock with it for about a day since he doesnt have his tab yet and I have had 2 disconnects in about 30 hours.
Everyone is having these problems, even the review units they sent out a month ago.

Looks, however, can be deceiving. We plugged a USB stick into the side of the Eee Pad's dock and nothing happened. We swapped it for another USB drive, we tried the other port, and nothing continued to happen. We jacked in an SD card and still got no response. It was only after a complete reboot of the tablet that those ports magically began functioning, but that wasn't the only issue we experienced with the docking solution. On multiple occasions, the Eee Pad wouldn't recognize the connection or disconnection between itself and its peripheral part, resulting in it either ignoring our input on the dock or expecting the physical keyboard to still be attached and consequently refusing to offer a software text input method.

Dock Issues
As impressed as I was with the fact that ASUS took a tablet OS and made it work in both the tablet and notebook worlds, the Eee Pad Transformer dock isn't without its issues. As I alluded to before, there are times when the dock simply doesn't work. I'll be using the dock, scrolling around or typing and then all of the sudden the keyboard and trackpad stop working altogether. Sometimes the solution is as simple as undocking and redocking the Eee Pad, but other times it requires a full reboot. It's frustrating.

ASUS knew all about these issues prior to release (US release, anyway). Anyone who read the prerelease reviews knew of the problems, because all of the trustworthy reviewers mentioned them. I still preordered because I thought the hold up on US sales was because they were fixing these issues. But they didn't fix anything! They are knowingly selling lemons.
I love my Transformer and I love most ASUS products that I own but the dock is total piece of crap they should have delayed the release of.
no issues yet, but i've only really used it for maybe 45 min. i'll put some more work on it later tonight and see if any issues creep up.
Yeah, don't get too happy too fast.
I was actually typing a post here giving my impressions of the dock and one of my lines was, "I haven't run into any of the issues with locking up that others have been experiencing."
Let's just say I had to go back and delete that line (and finish my post with the touchscreen!)
Also all the issues are as far as I can tell software issues not hardware issues which means firmware updates can fix em. Asus also told anand the firmware updates are on their way.

Cool, it would REALLY suck if they couldn't be fixed with a software update.
Also, do you have a link for the anand info?

just google anand transformer review and you get it. The review states all the issues but also states asus telling them they are aware of the issues and are going to release a firmware update.
I'm not noticing any issues with mine. I'm using Prime v1.2 custom ROM. At first when I got the keyboard dock I had what I thought were some weird problems. Turns out I just wasn't pushing the tablet all the way in to the dock before I locked it. I didnt realize it because it seemed to fall into where I was putting it, and the lock would slide about half way over- i thought that was just as far as it goes.
Anyone having troube- I recommend double checking that you are firmly pushing your tablet in to the dock with the lock slider in the unlocked position. Then make sure you are able to slide the lock slider all the way to the right (fully locked position).
If you're already doing that, then I suppose you really do have a problem- hopefully it is software related and not hardware.
My dock is *almost* usable with the trackpad disabled.. Still likes to shut down on it's own (it's getting a shutdown key.. which is funny considering that's not a key on the dock.. actually says "shutting down" then shuts down.. or wifi turns off..
With the trackpad enabled, it crashes/hangs within a few minutes. (usually requires holding down the power button for 10 seconds to fix..)
Curious - what's everyone's dock model #?
Go to settings / about tablet, and scroll to the buttom. Mine is EP101-0207 and it doesn't work right.. Are there any different versions out there?

Would be nice if people voting waited a couple of days of normal usage before answering the poll. I would bet a fair amount of money that quite a few people will vote "No problems" and then the problem will show up for them 8 hours later. A lot of the people having these issues are starting out with no problems and then seeing the problem and then seeing it get progressively worse.

I know that when I installed Prime 1.5, I get "Sleep of Death" every hour... I went back to stock and "Sleep of Death" went away... I'm not sure if this issue was fixed yet. I was told last week that it might be kernel related issue. But in the meantime, you can also try a different kernel and see if that fixes the problem... If not, try a different rom or even use Prime 1.4. Worst case is to go back to stock 3.1.
I'm still using stock rom right now and plan on using it for a while...
ill have to give stock a test drive. i did see that when i changed roms i did get sleep of death.
we can just flash a CWM stock rom right?
I had this problem for the first time today. I'm on Prime 1.5.
I also had no sound when I got it back on. Had to reboot to get the sound back.
Any similar sound/sleep of death issues?
Any new information on a permanent fix for this?
Thanks.
ASUS is working on a fix for this. It has something to do with 'power management.'
Just wait patiently while they release a OTA to fix this and then devs will also incorporate this fix within the ROM.
I had it nearly every time I left the tablet on for more than an hour without touching it. Upgraded to stock 3.1 and it hasn't happened since... (I manually flashed it; didn't wait for the OTA if that matters..)
My first TF suffered a SOD but I think it was a screen of death not sleep of death. I could never get it back so I replaced it at TigerDirect. My current solution? I pushed the TF off to the side of my desk and bought a Xoom...

I read Asus saying they were fixing hte dock draining issue, nothing about the sleep of death. I have never had this happen, though I'm on stock, and form the looks of it the peeps that are on custom roms have this issue so doubt they'd fix a non-stock problem.

Bought my TF a week ago, with 3.01, NEVER has seen SOD; today -finally- OTA upgrade to 3.1 in the Netherlands; since upgrade SOD every time TF goes in sleep mode..
Great upgrade, thanks ASUS! Any solution (except downgrading) around, plz?
Last nights OTA update fixed my deep sleep problems. This update apparently included a power management fix.
I've had my transformer for 2 months now. I had it stock, always updated OTA, until the NVflash/APX mode rooting method appeared and then I flashed PRIME! v1.4 and never had any SOD until recently when I upgraded to PRIME! v1.5. However, I did two other things around the time of the v1.5 upgrade that could equally have started the problem, namely; I started using a 16GB SDHC card in the keyboard dock and I also connected HDMI to my TV for the first time using a C-to-A adapter (this also does not work properly - uinstable image - intermittent digital interference flickers along the bottom of the screen).
I have since re-flashed PRIME! v1.5 using the APX/NVflash method and have stopped using the 16GB SDHC card in the dock and now the SOD has stopped happening..... HDMI is still an issue but that could be the cable and/or adapter.
Deep sleep , could it be tegra 2 issue?
the Folio 100, the toshiba thrive and Asus TF has this problem. all of them have Tegra 2. if i set the folio 100 to 30 minutes before sleep i can use it as long as i don't let it go over 30 min before i wake up the screen. if i close the screen (via the button) i don't get deep sleep problem before 30 min has gone. so there is some problem related to the CPU and memory going to deep sleep and can not get interupts from the button anymore
My SOD seems to only happen when it's attached to the keyboard dock. If I leave it undocked, it never get's the SOD. I'm on a replacement dock, and the original dock I had never gave me the SOD either.
I have the latest firmware installed and that didn't make a difference.
No dock. But had my first SOD with Prime 1.6 + Netformer and IO fix OC'd to 1.5
My first post so I'm locked out of development forum with the relevant thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1070343&highlight=waking+sleepsleep+of+death
Anyway, had my TF for only a couple of days, goes to SOD two-three times a day already. I didn't play around with 3.0 much before doing OTA to 3.1 but 3.1 and now 3.2 still put it to this unnatural sleep.
Actually, it didn't wake up after updating to 3.2 itself.
From reading that thread the best probable cause appears to be the voltage issue when CPU clock speed changes - when waking form sleep clock speed goes up but voltage doesn't or something like that, and if some processes are left running, like logging to a file, the system never really goes to sleep so no problem with waking but a problem with catching the culprit.
Someone also said that in 3.2, by design, there should be even more sudden clock speed increases so SOD problem might become even more frequent.
One more possible argument for the voltage theory - SOD doesn't happen when TF is charging, meaning that CPU management is not that strict. Someone reported that Juice Defender, the app to minimize power consumption/CPU load, actually caused SOD on his TF.
The actual cause of SOD is a failure to get the correct value for blacklight on waking so looking at the display closely with a flashlight one still can see it running, allegedly, and can even unlock it. If that happens and the system is otherwise responsive maybe there's a way to force the backlight on, maybe some widget that toggles autobrightness on something. I'm waiting for my next SOD to test this theory, sometimes the screen doesn't look black, simply not light enough.
Maybe all I've said is nonsense but I'm an unrooted noob, I'm allowed.

Virtuous Galaxy 1.0.6, etc.

Like many of you, I am not rushing to update to 3.2. Not until we get root, anyway.
Instead, I decided to try a couple of the Acer Iconia ROMs available from Tabletroms.com.
I am currently running Virtuous Galaxy 1.0.6 - and I am liking it very much. One of the things I didn't enjoy about version 1.0.5 is that I was never able to pair and use a bluetooth keyboard with it. That is no longer a problem with 1.0.6. Not only that, Netflix just works. No modifications needed. Front and back cameras work as well as the rear camcorder.
I've also noticed superior battery life with this ROM. Yesterday I used it for about 4 hours straight with both wifi and bluetooth enabled, keyboard paired, etc and only had about 25% battery loss. Since that time, I have used it intermittently and this morning - 24 hours later - the battery is at 60%.
The only real bug I have noticed is with shutdown. Long pressing the power button immediately shuts it down, no shut down menu. But after the last buzz, the screen remains back lit. So I have to hold the power button down until the tablet is completely powered down. A work around is to use LiGux Tools as the shutdown tool.
There is also a 1.0.7 version which I have not tried - the initial welcome screen is in Russian. But from there you can change it to the language of your choice.
Falcon Galaxy is another nice ROM - it's basically a combo of Acer stock along with the Samsung Touchwiz interface.

I believe you may have misunderstood. The power down sequence never offered up a shutdown confirmation window. Short press put it to sleep. Long press should bring up the shutdown window. In this case that never happened. I could only power down by holding the power button until it completely shut down - or use a shut down widget.
I've moved onto Primee p9-5a, so the problem is long gone.

It WILL shut down completely if you wait. I tried this ROM, and I know it shuts down, and I know what you are talking about. Try turning off all the lights and in the dark, turn the tablet off, then black backlit is still on. Wait for maybe 20 seconds (not really sure, I haven't measured it..), or at most 40 seconds. The black lit will be off too. Then you can turn on again normally.
I think Samsung made it like that to make people believe that the tablet turns off right away, instead of like other tablets or phones, waiting for everything to finish up and turn off. But actually, they don't turn off that fast either, because the back lit is still on, and still processing until the tablet completely shuts down.
I love the Virtuous Galaxy Rom too, and I really hope fguy can make one with Acer's Android 3.2, and the Touchwiz from Samsung, just like Falcon Galaxy, but with Android 3.2, not 3.1.

List of issues after Jelly Bean update.

So I've heard a lot of people reported that after the Jelly Bean update their devices got a lot of problems (like constantly reboot, can't connect wifi,...) some even want to go back to ICS.
So please list your issues here that you notice AFTER the update and DID NOT notice when you were in ICS . This will hep other people make their decisions on weather update or not.
Only thing I've noticed that might be considered as a bug is that, now when I connect to dock and move the cursor around the launcher, the cursor has less framerate...

Rear camera
Hello!
My first experience with JB, was that my "rear" camera became messed up. The camera itself seemed to work (focus, zoom, shooting etc.). When saving/rendering, however, every 2-3 images became solid green or what looked like "double exposed" with distorted colours. I shot some pictures only a few days before the rollout, and the pictures were just fine. The front camera was OK.
After having read a few threads about tips on how to do a FW upgrade in general, I ended up doing a factory reset. After that the camera now seems to work fine; I have shot about 15-20 images without issues.
Another detail when it comes to the camera; the nice, little shutter animation is gone under JB.
I am on the WW-version (Sweden), stock ROM, no ROOT - so nothing strange. I got JB OTA friday 2012-08-24.

Random reboots here, even led me to factory reset just in case, but n this morning it has happened again, seems to be connected to when the screen sleeps but really cant tell.
Not a HUGE issue but somewhat annoying. Still better than ICS

Same problem with mine. It has started doing a reboot and sometimes even a "sleep of death", where it won't turn on after it's gone to sleep and I have to hold the power button in for some time. I had no problems before JB.
Mine cant detect the external sd...both micro sd and full sd are not readable...
Usb however works fine...
At first I had a boot-loop causes by EZoverclock,.. so make sure before you update to unintstall ezoverclock.
After factory reset (I know now that it was possible to uninstall ezoverclock during boot-loop:silly, cold booted...
i reinstalled my apps, and found that MX-Player doens´t support hardware decoding with 1080p MKV files anymore! (Worked with ICS!)
I can only selected the software rendering. Going to try other players now, but hardware decoding seems a problem with JB.
I also can´t get Nova Launcher to work. Not with normal installation(error -24 during installation) and also not as a system app.(app crashes)
anyone else with same problems ?
I've had a few application crashes that whilst I can't say is because of JB, I don't think they happened (or as often) with ICS.
wifi is working but it has a problem with the dns servers. had to manualy correct this problem to get on the internet again. No problems on my laptop thats also wireless.

try under Asus setting 'mobile dock power saving mode' and see if that changes anything.
I think if it is not checked, then the tablet will stay awake if on the dock and not closed.
(General statement)
Baffles me why any one who is rooted would try to force the OTA. Just be patient. You'll get an update via ROM.
For those who didn't wait and are now complaining about the end result, you should have read up on what an OTA could do to your device and waited.

no issues at all. It's been rich solid for me and way better than ICS. Current up time is going on 132 hours (prior to that it was like 7 days and I only had to "reboot"cause the stinking battery died) with pretty much constant use. I keep it on performance mode 24/7 and its fast fast fast (although I do notice it is slower than my Samsung Galaxy S3 which is running CM10 and overclocked). Practically everyone that touches it comments on how fast it is...

The answer from ASUS
Thank you for your email.
From your email I understand that the Eeepad isn’t working correctly after the update. This is very inconvenient and shouldn’t be the case.
i advise you to reset the Eeepad and to check the firmware if there is another new update.
You can reset the Eeepad by switching the device off. Once the device has been shut off, you push the volume minus button and the power button at the same time. As soon as you see something appear in the screen, you push the volume plus. This will reset your device. Please back up your data first, because a reset will remove all data which you have installed yourself.
After this, you can update the firmware. You can update the firmware via: Settings --> About tablet --> Firmware update.
If the solutions which are written above didn’t solve the problem, please contact us again.
I don't think this solves the issue, as I can not see any new firmware when I check now. Then again I am doubting whether a factory reset will solve it. Anybody tried a factory reset after the JB upgrade ?
Applied the blob from the website. Guys, is it just me or the sound volume is now much much lower? I'm talking especially about headphones, I have to raise the volume much higher to get the same sound as on ICS.

I had the same problem, the only thing that fixed it was a complete reinstall of windows. However, i found that it wont work if you do a fresh install from your own pc, download the latest version and install. I looked everywhere for a solution and this was the best bet, all other options gave me a blue screen of death.
Definitive solution:
1- open device manager
2- search for Intel Management Engine
3- Right click and choose Disable.
Congratulation! You can now SLEEP comfortably.
