[Q] Magicjack with T-Mobile - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just curious if anyone else has T-Mobile and also a Magicjack?
Up until a few weeks ago this was working fine, and had been for 2 years. But recently we are no longer able to RECEIVE calls from a T-Mobile cell phone. When you call the magicjack number from the cell you get a message stating "all circuits are busy now, please try your call again later. Message NC26955".
I am, however, able to call the call a T-Mobile cell phone just fine. So basically, OUTGOING calls to T-Mobile cell phones work fine, but INCOMING calls do not.
I have already verified that Verizon phones work fine, as do land lines. The problem is isolated to T-Mobile cell phones.
I have also spent hours dealing with both magicjack and T-Mobile support, both of whom claim that there is no issue with their service.
I have also verified that the correct ports (5060 and 5070 UDP) are open to the magicjack. Anyway, nothing there has changed either.
Anyone have any other ideas of things to try?

Obviously this should not be happening. It does sound like a magic jack issue. If you like you can pm me the mj# and I'll give it a try from here in San Diego. Are there any other ports you can use btw? Just to cover all the bases?

I was convinced it was a magicjack issue, until my brother called me from his verizon phone. The only phones that can't call me are tmo cell phones. However, I can turn around and call a tmo phone just fine.
I spoke with tmo support again today and they are going to send me a cell signal booster. So hopefully I won't even need the magicjack anymore if I can get our cell phones to work inside the house.
As far as the ports go, those are the ones that magicjack uses for VOIP.

Ok. My wife use to use magic jack. She's in the Philippines and we never had any problems with it. I'm with tmo, that's why I volunteered to call you if you wanted. I would suggest wifi calling, but I'm not sure if tmo still offers that!
Well, hopefully this cell signal booster works for you.

Yeah, if WiFi calling worked on the nexus 4 that would be awesome.

data connect = incoming calls straight to VM

so i just noticed this today (i have the leaked ROM installed) that when i am using the web or checking my email if someone calls they go straight to my voice mail -- i haven't had the phone long enough to know if this is how it is supposed to be or not. Is there a way to get to cancel the data connection and show me someone is calling?

no, not really, at least not for those of us who use push email, since it maintains a constant data connection to the exchange server

well i read through that and tried what they mentioned but i couldn't get it to drop the data when a call came in.
btw, i'm on Sprint, and no EVDO where i am at so only 1x.
but as i mention in the thread
"i believe that all issues with cellphone internet blocking or being disabled when one recieve a call is purely an issue
with old and poor quality equipment of the cellphone operator in the area"
many old gsm and aparently american cellphone networks too
suffer from not being able to handle both network and calls at the same time
it's an issue in the operator end not the phones
yeah after three emails with sprint (i think most of their CS people are brain dead) they finally told me that it is how it works, no way around it.
one told me that calls go to voice mail when you don't have enough signal -- totally irrelevent to this issue
one told me it was a technical problem with my phone and said i should bring it to a sprint store to get a tech to look at it
and finally after *****ed at them sayint that people (that i assume) don't work for sprint know more about this (thanks Rudegar for your responces) then they do, they finally just came out and said that, yeah this is how it is and there isn't anyway around it.
it seems that this is a better place to get answers then emailing sprint --- although i should have realized that from the beginning, i won't make that mistake again.
well i guess your question has been answered, but figure id add my 2 cents...
it works like this only in EV-DO areas not on 1x....
my ring through works perfectly fine when a call or text comes in, it discconects allows me to do what i want, then it automatically reconnects back to data..

WiFi calling tmous

BUMP. Cannot get any service within my college dorm either (yet outside, there are 5 bars and no network connectivity issues). I've been reading up on T-mobile wireless frequencies and their inability to effectively penetrate walls and other surfaces.
Here is the forum post from the Nexus boards (unfortunately a bit above my technological knowledge).

Apparently to get wifi calling working, kernel-deep implementation must be applied before the app is even installed.
Google voice, although I believe you have to use a different number. On the plus side you can use gvoice over 3g as well

Calls with GV android still go out over a standard cellular network so therefore this doesn't work in the case where you have no network access. An alternative is to use a SIP service in combination with GV which is terribly unreliable (I can speak from experience of using a variety of SIP services, et.al) and also uses a different telephone number which isn't ideal in my case. Thank you for the suggestion though.

Unfortunately yes it does take away from your minutes. T-Mobile decided to get rid of the '$20 unlimited wifi calling package' in exchange for the new UMA service. Its primary purpose now is to provide service where there isn't any and/or to allow customers traveling internationally to make phone calls using their plan minutes over wifi--completely avoiding the need for an overseas phone/plan.

So, if you travel internationaly you're not charged roaming if you use your phone over wifi calling?. You just use your plan minutes as if they were domestic?

WIFI Calling takes your call from anywhere in the world and routes it back to the states as if you were next to a T-Mobile tower. This doesn't mean that you can call a number that would be classified as roaming at no cost. For example, if you are in a London hotel and connect your phone via wifi to call a local London restaurant for reservations, this would be considered an international phone call. However, if you just call your friends and family with their US based area codes, you would just be using your minutes.

Yeah SMS works the same way. I really wish I could get this to work for me as well. But Wifi calling doesn't work on the newest HD2 Android builds.
Has anybody been able to get WIFI calling to work on TMOUS, NAND?
Doesn't seem that the Devs really care about this. It's hard to even find any info. I wish this could be done as Then I could replace my wife's blackberry with UMA with my Spare HD2.
I see one dev who seems to care. Check here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=927671
Notice where it says:
Coming Soon:
Kineto GAN interface(based on CM kernel style to help work on T-Mo US Wifi Calling)
Kineto is the company that created an app that can do wifi calling for certain android phones and the app was (I think) successfully ported to the Nexus One. It doesn't do cell tower to wifi handoffs because that is apparently a chip-based feature and this is purely a software solution.

silence during calls - ATT - calls answered NO AUDIO

I have a very strange issue on ATT, no one else seems to have:
first, I got a new micro SIM and I'm on the correct 4g plan (I generated an IMEI for an ATRIX 4g to give to ATT).
Problem:
About 2 to 10 minutes into a call the person the other end looses the ability to hear me. but I can hear them. so I hang up. at this point ANY calls in or outbound are silent in both directions. Bluetooth, Speakerphone or headset, same results. and at this point wifi and cellular signal bars are now gray. Reboot and the phone works again.
Does anyone have any ideas????? I may need to send the phone back. Do you think ATT has something provisioned wrong???
update: I did a factory restore, I still have the problem. I have a bad feeling it's something to do with ATT / Nexus 4 / fake IMEI ??? and this happens using either popular Nexus4 ATT APNs.
OH and another update... today when this happened I noticed my Ford's Sync system flashed "In Privacy..." the rest was cut off... then silence!!!! WTF ?!?!??!?!?!? In Privacy Mode?!?!?!

Anyone with Project Fi having service issues with the 6p

So I received the new Fi Sim card as the one in my nexus 6 wasnt compatible with the Nexus 6p. Went through the activation etc and I receive calls on wifi but not make calls on wifi or cellular, data is brutally slow. Waiting to hear back from Google on this.
I had Fi on nexus 6 and they did send a new Sim for the 6p, but I have to say that Data and Calls are better than in the 6.
Now have you tried putting it in airplane mode, then clear all app data of Fi, remove airplane mode and restart?
That worked for me when I had the Nexus 6

I have been on Project Fi since last friday with no issues. The service has been great I been getting LTE now where I couldn't before on just T-mobile. My download speeds has been around 16-35 Mbps:good::good::good:
I activated and it said complete, but it said data plan only from the Fi app and I could only make or receive calls over WiFi. I had to add my google voice phone number and run through the activation again and all is good now.
as they always see, ID10T Error. When i was at the activation screen I forgot to click Learn More and transfer GV number, since i had ported it back to GV. All is well now
Activated FI last night...so far everything works great except sending SMS. Receiving is fine though. Support chat today said give it 24 hours...will see tomorrow.
In general projectfi works just fine. As someone mentioned earlier, the first 24 hours was iffy with signal dropping to 0 randomly, worked fine from day two. I also see one other issue...I have no signal at nights or when I am closest to the router. I Wonder if radio is turned off and it jumps on WiFi for all network activity (including calls). Regardless... Had it for just a few days...like it so far.

They told me the same thing when I activated 4 days ago. The only people who can receive texts that I send (either via SMS or Project Fi) are people on T-Mobile. Texts sent to my Verizon work phone or my girlfriend's Sprint phone never show up. And Fi's tier 1 phone support is terrible. Tier 2 was supposed to call me back two days ago, but apparently that can take up to 72 hours. I gotta admit, I'm not overly impressed so far

Looks like I have the same issue. I'm just starting with Tier 1 support, so I guess I'll prepare myself to wait.
I have the same issue. I also tested with AT&T .. and messages are not received on AT&T phones also. Tier2 was supposed to contact me 4 days, but nothing. Me thinks that is because they don't know what is wrong, and they don't have a fix. I am still within the 15 day trial period, to I think the phone and the service are going back ...
I just activated and sent to a Verizon number using Textra and it sent and received just fine, maybe try a different messaging apk?
How's everyone's voice quality? When I called my friends Verizon number, they said I sounded tinny, they sounded fine to me.
Some service issues on all Project Fi phones is due to the lack of proper band 12 support. This seems to be the ongoing and very big issue now
If you have active band 12 in your area, I wouldn't switch to Fi service at this point

Fi doesn't support HD voice or VoLTE which both effect voice quality and VoLTE also effect signal coverage

I live in the country a bit and I know for sure that T-mo reception is terrible where I live, but I'm not sure how the Sprint coverage might be so was considering trying the Fi service - but it seems like the early reports that Fi cannot switch between Tmo and Sprint towers on the same call. Is this still the case, and if so, has anyone had any problems refunding in that 15 day trial period?
No Outbound Wi-Fi calling
My first week with Fi has been very frustrating, and like someone else pointed out, Tier 1 support is very friendly, but typically rather incompetent beyond giving you canned answers that anyone with slight grasp of technology has already tried (update the app, update the phone, switch to Airplane mode and back, use an open Wi-FI, delete your Wi-Fi, restart your phone, etc.).
I've been using TMO for three years and my downtown Seattle office has no cell coverage from TMO or Sprint, so I've been depending on TMO Wi-Fi calling. Fi seemed like the perfect answer for me. I swapped the TMO SIM to the Fi SIM in my new 6P and MMS/SMS works in and out, voice calls work inbound (via Wi-Fi no less), but outbound forget it. Unless the phone can dial out on cell, it just times out after 30 seconds. Multiple emails and calls with Fi support have told me every possible thing (some incredibly ludicrous--my favorite is cell phone tower issues in Tacoma, 35 miles away and we're talking about a Wi-Fi issue). I finally overnighted a replacement SIM. Same problem. I've filed debug logs with support and am still waiting for any advice. I'm about out of options other than just going back to my TMO SIM and relying on Wi-Fi calling that works.

I have been on Project Fi for almost a month now and I don’t have any issues calling out on wifi and I also live in Seattle. I’m also getting LTE at places that I couldn’t before with just T Mobil. And my cell bill is about half of what it use to be with TMO.
Just a thought, can your wifi call out issues be a router problem?

It's doesn't appear to be a router issue. I can reproduce at multiple locations where there's only a Wi-Fi signal (welcome to South Lake Union and buildings that don't like 2.1 GHz signals). It appears that a very small amount of cell signal is being detected, but not enough for an outbound call to be initiated (which means it should use the much stronger Wi-Fi).
I have found a workaround by placing the phone in Airplane mode, and then turning on the Wi-Fi radio. Everything will work. Hopefully, the Fi developers can do a code fix to improve that scenario. Honestly, the outbound voice calling issue on Wi-Fi only is just a nuisance as I rarely make voice calls. I can always use my home VoIP provider with the built in VoIP dialer in the stock phone app.
As for pricing, I was/am on a TMO $30 5 GB plan (when you've got signal, I've seen up to 90+ Mbps). So Fi will cost a little more (and give me unlimited voice vs. 100 mins), but I'm hoping the Sprint/TMO combo will bridge the huge gaps in TMO data coverage in non-urban areas like I-5 from Castle Rock to just outside Portland).

Phone no longer ringing when the network is 4G LTE

Using the phones on Sprint.
Since three weeks or so, while on LTE, the incoming voice calls are going directly to voice mail.
Sprint looked at it and changed the Network to 3G and now getting a ring for the incoming calls.
Basically, I am forced to run the phones on 3G service.
Need to go to a service center (which is very far for me) to have the phone looked at.
Anyone facing similar issue?
PS: 2 of the 3 PH-1 phones I have, are having the issue.

Google have updated the dialer recently several times, could it be a bug that shows on Sprint, or do you have spam settings on, which I know has caught other people out. Check/play with spam settings in her dialer app.
(other areas I might check (if not dialer or network). I assume all phones were working before correctly, right? Are they different sims or the same sim in different phones? New sims, ie not old one you have cut down hat are old spec. Do lte settings match on different phones?)

Same issue. Did you get it fixed?
I also have this problem on Sprint.
Sometimes restarting the phone fixes the issue, sometimes it doesn't.
Between this and no longer being able to use Google Voice without using a separate number, I think it's time for me to bail on Sprint.
My wife had this issue a bit back. Only happened when the phone was using VoLTE (verified by a debug menu, *#*#4636#*#*, showing both voice/text and data marked as LTE).
Fix was to disable the Enhanced 4G LTE communications option, which forced the phone too fallback to nonVoLTE while still using LTE for data. Again confirmed using the phone information menu which showed voice as 1xRTT and data as LTE.
Hope this help and that we can get a better fix soon.

Any time...
I love sharing my time with ungrateful idiots that can't bother to read or need the red carpet rolled out for them...
Good luck with your device... Hope you drop it in the river

Didn't work for me either but I figured it out... what I had to do is change a setting under Google Voice in Settings under the tab CALLS change to "Use carrier only" and I did have to turn VoLTE off. I left the Preferred network type as LTE. Phone is working well now, with T-mobile and Google Voice I have been testing it all morning.
