OTA update / Rooted - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have a question about my Nexus 7. I would like to root it but I would like to know if I will still receive OTA update from Google? Of what I understood, if your device is rooted you won't receive OTA update? If you don't receive OTA update, would it be possible to update it manually? I want to continue to use the stock OS but I want to enjoy the “root” features…
Thanks!

You will continue to receive OTA updates if you stay on the stock ROM.
I would highly recommend that you get yourself acquainted with Linux so that you can better understand root access and android in general!
Xda guides and forums are great places to learn and it would be a shame not to read them to exploit them to the fullest before posting!
Hope that helped!

Question regarding ROOT

Will Unlocking + ROOTing my Nexus One prevent me from recieving future OTA updates from Google or no?
If you have a rooted G1 (reading your sig) wouldn't the answer be self explanatory?

Did you even read my question?
What does my Sig have to do with my question?
I have a Nexus One and I don't want to miss future updates, such as "Adobe Flash" which is a proprietary app and I don't want to miss out.
If you install ROMs, I assumed you would know that you cannot receive OTA updates anymore. Which I'm sure you do. I don't know personally if rooting your phone, and still using the stock system will disable you from receiving OTA updates. So I'm not of use here. Don't know why I posted here myself lol. Thanks for the harshly toned text ._.

i'm also interested in this question. i would like to root my n1, but i would also like to receive OTA updates from google. i don't plan on installing a custom ROM, just use stock and root for the purpose of wifi tether and a few other root apps. anyone?
I am wondering this as well. I installed the bacon addon from cyanogen and don't want to screw myself out of the ota updates.
Thanks.
You can't have everything people. Pick one. If you need to revert back, I wrote a tutorial.
Chances are you are going to see the updates here first. You guys should know that already unless you are one of those people that come in here, download an update and leave for a few months and recheck to see if there are any other updates.

Sorry, I'm not referring to running a custom ROM. I just want to know if i unlock and ROOT but, keep the original ROM, will I still get the OTA updates or no? So, if anyone knows, I'd gratefully appreciate it.
As far as I understand, as long as you're using the stock, signed Nexus One ROM, nothing would change that would prevent you from receiving OTA updates.
I'm not positive.
The reason custom ROMs do not get OTA updates is because they have the files for them removed, and in the case of the G1, the partition used for doing those is removed if you have the DangerSPL.
Simply rooting and keeping stock should allow you to OTA update still no problem, but like was already pointed out, the updates will be on here befor they are released OTA, and a good cooked ROM is 10times better than the stock.

Why does this matter??????????????
If you rooted, you'd get the OTA updates faster than OTA people!!!!!!!!!!!
I have a 100% stock, un-rooted N1. I didn't get the OTA update within the first day, so I did it manually anyway.
What is the point of fearing that you'll miss out on OTA updates??? With root, that should be your *LAST* concern.
BTW guaranteed you will get Flash sooner with a rooted phone than without!
These threads make no sense whatsoever.

[Q] Root and keep OTA updates?

So I'm planning on using WugFresh's toolkit to root my Nexus 7. Its my understanding right now that as long as I keep the stock recovery I should still be able to receive OTA updates. Is this correct? I'm not interested in flashing any roms or recoveries, just want to get root access but keep the ability to get OTA updates. Will this work for me?

Yes, if you simply just root your device, then OTA updates will be fine.
I did the same with my N7
But I used the other toolkit, cant remember the creator but didn't use WugFresh

Can I update my android version after root?

Hello there,
This is my first time using an android device, and I have just successfully rooted my n10.
But I was wondering if google came up with a new android version can I update it? And after I update it, is my device still rooted?
I'm just asking to make sure I don't messed up my tablet.
Thanks
Tim

In general there are ways to 'keep root'. But no one knows the future so each time its possible there are problems. People smarter than us will try first and work out all the kinks. If you need to have Google's update that same day you still can, but to do it 100% safely youll need to change things back.
So to literally answer your question - yes your tablet will be able to be updated. (Be sure you learn about what that means w/ root though prior to Googles next update.)
you will lose root. Always check the development section to see if that new upgrade has root.
If they do, upgrade then get root again. I say, be patient and wait for root before any upgrades... makes the Nexus more fun.

So do you mean, lets say there's a new android version and I'd have to get the new root then do a system update?
Or do I system update and then root my phone as soon as im done updating to the new version??

D-X69,
I read on a few XDA posts that when people did the last OTA (4.2.2) update while rooted they lost root, but a few of them had used "OTA RootKeeper" and used it to restore root easily. Of course they had previous to applying the OTA update installed OTA RootKeeper and performed the initial root back.

Here are more options and a discussion on the subject:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2148167&highlight=ota+rootkeeper
and another where a user directly mentions success using OTA RootKeeper:

Since you are already rooted you have a couple choices. Flash an updated stock rooted ROM or go custom ROM that is updated. No need to lose your root to upgrade ROM.
And, to add to the above, here's a YouTube video explaining OTA Rootkeeper:

Just go AOKP instead
All my devices run AOKP, and I have never looked back.

[Q] Can Custom Recoveries hurt?

Can having flashed TWRP 2.5.0.2 or a CWM based recovery in any way hinder/stop OTA updates or re-stock
via un-root and KIES and/or ODIN? Please overlook any obvious inherent stupidity in the question becsuse if I knew I
Wouldn't have asked. Give me something and I should be able to search out the rest.
Thanks for the help...

Do A search for blocking the OTA, also normally when your on a Rooted rom, (NORMALLY) it stops the OTA's:victory:
if you are rooted, you should never take any OTA updates period...
you will likely lose root, the update may or may not complete, and it can cause problems, especially for someone new to rooting and android..
Eventually most dev's incorporate all the beneficial stuff from any ota update into their releases, so I never understand why people who are rooted even bother trying to make ota updates work on their phones..
does that answer help you out?

Oops, hit the thanks button by accident.
Anyways, you can always flash back to stock with Odin.

That will work, just remember you'll likely lose the ability to re flash you recovery or kernel since any update is likely to invlude a patched bootloader.

Keep in mind...we at xda usually get updates long before official users due to stock firmware leaks...so with that said we will likely have key lime pie touchwiz roms before its officially released
Also most importantly...if some super crazy ota like key lime pie is released...it will also very likely include patches to current exploits not allowing you to root or flash roms again until new exploits are discovered (our root method motochopper has already been patched by Verizon) - so if tour into flashing and rooting its always highly advised to not update until a dev gives the ok...

Rooting and update question.....

Hello everyone,
I'm an ex-Evo3d user and as I remember people were always talking about how updating your phone can kill your root. My question is now that I rooted my Sprint SG4 and have the hotspot goody working, what should I do about any future Sprint OTA updates? Should I update or not? Should I wait for OTA updates that people post that I flash manually? What do you guys think?
Thanks :fingers-crossed:
I too came from Evo 3d, I believe if you are running a custom recovery otas will not update, it checks prior to installing and if you are the update fails. That said, even back in my htc days I found is best to patiently wait till a skilled dev gets their hands on it and create flashbacks firmware zips our so it's safe to flash in Odin

Thanks for the info! I was a bit concerned on the auto update. Waiting for a zip flash OTA update is the way to go. Cool! :highfive:
Generally speaking our Devs have a fully rooted version of the newest OTA available the same day if not a few days before it comes out. You are always prompted about a new OTA and you can ignore it until you get a flashable update that meets your needs. Once you are on a build that has the same version source as the OTA you will stop getting update notices.
