I've just noticed some dead/stuck pixels in HD video record mode and I would like to know whether it's a hardware or software defect.
Now I'm using 4.4.2 Carbon ROM (but saw the same pixels on Paranoid Android as well), I don't remember seeing them on stock ROM and they only appear in video mode.
So if you have Custom ROM installed, could you please go to your camera app, switch to video mode (make sure it's 1080p!), cover the lens with your finger so the screen will be all black and look for these dead pixels?
edit: I restored my stock backup and these pixels are still there, it's just a bit tricky, because the stock camera app blurs them out or something so you can't see them, but if you install any 3rd party camera app which you can use to record videos, they will be there.
I'm not saying everyone has these hot pixels, but as I've been browsing xda, sadly it's not that uncommon. Such a bummer.

Well I noticed mine on the 4K video. Can't test now better, but it really looks like a dead one or 2 to me :/.
Did you exchange your phone, or just live with it?
I may have the same issue.
Few on my G2 only on non stock ROM or third party camera app.
Stock (and stock based like cloudy etc..) have this smudgering algorythm that masks those stuck-hot pixels. Did anyone claimed for replacement over this?

I have just recently started noticing that when trying to take a picture or a movie that on the "preview screen" there are lines that run vertically on the screen (in portrait view) or horizontal (while in landscape view) - they run from the top of the phone to the bottom.
I have looked very carefully at both the lens on the battery cover, and the lens on the actual camera (under the cover) they appear to be very clean.
I don't remember this being this way at all, and it wouldn't really bother me too much, but my pictures and movies seem to be affected by this. when i view a picture at first it looks ok, but when I zoom in further the lines are more apparent. (especially in the corners and top/bottom)
i attached a screenshot of the preview screen that kind of shows what I'm talking about (pay attention to the bottom and top of the picture to see the lines / distortion
* This seems to have happened within the last week. (older pictures don't have the lines on them)
* Haven't installed any new apps
* Running fresh 1.1
* Reboot doesn't help.
* Wifi and GPS off and still happens
Anyone else have this experience, or even better would be if someone fixed it.
-AndyS-
I have been running fresh 1.1 since it came out
I see what your talking about and from a photographic stand point. if it actually affects the photo when its taken and not just the preview I would say that there is something wrong with the sensor I would take it to sprint and have them check it out.
I have this same issue and it did not start until the MR release. Prior to that, the camera was pretty awesome.
I have been noticing this also and like the person above me stated... It didn't start until the MR release.
I have the same problem and I am also running Fresh 1.1. I started flashing right after I got it so I dont know if it was always like this. I have another Hero that has not been rooted, had the MR, and is taking great pictures. Tipharet and Doniiniicano, is your device rooted? and/or running a different ROM?? Sure a quick fix would be to bring it to Sprint, but I really dont want to deal with that.
if it was something to do with the MR then it is possible that they may have changed and or messed up the sensor settings.
BTW I am running Fresh 1.1 and have no problems.
This happens a lot in low light situations.. it did this on all my phones.. iphone, blackberry, Pre, Hero.. Cheap Sensors..
Im a photographer as well, and I can tell you there is a night and day difference in sensors in phones compared to regular cameras. I NEVER use my on phone Camera anymore.. because its so crappy.
night and day of course is different. However in low light situations I know for a fact that this did not start until the MR.
As far as the quality, for a phone it did not use to be that bad of a camera.

Yeah Im rooted, with fresh 1.1 but this happened before I even started flashing.
It's just high-ISO noise.
jonnythan is right. I did some research on camera noise and also found Banding noise. Banding noise is highly camera-dependent, and is noise which is introduced by the camera when it reads data from the digital sensor. Banding noise is most visible at high ISO speeds and in the shadows, or when an image has been excessively brightened. Banding noise can also increase for certain white balances, depending on camera model. So I guess if your Hero has this, it sounds like the only option is to have the device replaced and take a gamble the new one doesn't do it....or hope 2.1 fixes it <fingers crossed>

Ive never seem banding like that but hey its a possibility I guess it may be more noticeable on a camera like this than it is on a slr.
my phone was like this day one. I thought it was suppose to be like this since when I take pics I'm in low light.
Dont forget that we also only have 65K color screens. that will cause banding as well..

as an example

Did you get it post or pre MR?
I've noticed that any camera app based on the Google's 4.3 JB camera has weird white spots when shooting video, most obvious in low light.
The stock LG camera app doesn't do this, so I know it isn't a hardware defect.
Does anyone have an idea on how to fix it? I really would like to run CM, but I take a lot of video.
Also, in CM, Ski Safari doesn't recognize touches... Is there a way to run an app in an emulation mode?
Thanks!
I've searched XDA, I've searched Reddit, I've searched countless forums with ZERO success. I've tried Lenovo Super Cam, I've tried installing the LG Cam, I've tried flashing in the HTC cam. Nothing fixes the smeary, awful framerate and as a result I've taken exactly zero good photo or video on this phone in CM12. Is there any hope for CM or AOSP ROMs? I'll sell this phone before I end up putting an LG-Stock ROM on this thing.
I'm looking for stable framerate in photo preview and video preview, regardless of light on CM12. Does this holiest of G2nicorns actually exist?

CM12 is pretty old. I personally don't have that much issue with the camera anyway. It's a driver issue, which could explain the framerate, but the quality is pretty similar. Could you maybe take a couple of pictures and show us what the difference is?
Not sure how a photo would illustrate a low frame rate but this video shows the sneariness and frame drops. This isn't my video but the performance is similar or worse. It's the same for the photo viewfinder and that makes it impossible to take a photo or video in anything but glaring sunlight.

That's how it works though, the aperture remains open longer to capture more light, which causes less frames per second. Try recording the same thing on a stock rom and let us know how it goes. But then if it's a driver thing you can't do anything about it.

All I needed to know. That LG Stock ROM is a flaming trainwreck, and if there's no fix for AOSP or CM I literally am better off getting a new phone.

Well the video you linked IS a stock rom. There's no fix because it's not an issue, it's a camera characteristic. It's like saying a monitor doesn't display 120hz being a 60hz monitor. It doesn't, and if it did, it'd have some drawbacks. If you want steady framerate lower the iso.
It's still a phone camera, and a pretty good one at it. I'm not sure how people sometimes forget that. If you find a smartphone that matches a DSLR in the camera department and is around 200$ let me know.

The stock ROMs used to have the issue as shown in the video above, but they don't anymore. I don't know where but when I bought the phone and used 4.2 the camera was busted, and when I upgraded to 4.4 stock it was super smooth. And that's what I'm looking for, but only on AOSP or CM. No frame drops and a smooth, consistent 30fps or 60fps just like the stock ROM currently does. The stock ROM is an awful way to use this phone. I bought this phone when it was one of the cheap $180 unlocked devices posted on Phandroid with the strict intention of not using LG's C- effort. If it can't be done, it can't be done. No big deal.
There's a million threads from 2013 and 2014 that list "Oh use this, use that! Try Lenovo's camera! Flash so and so's fix even though the files are literally nowhere on the internet!" and literally nothing solves this issue in the slightest. I figured in 2015, maybe someone would know of a definite fix.
All 5.0 AOSP roms have a crap camera, including 4.4 AOSP.
Flash any 5.1 AOSP ROM for the G2 like BlissPop or Euphoria, it looks like Google got their **** together in 5.1. The camera IS better than CM12, but still not as good as LG rom.

Lol, this doesn't look like g2 at all. At least not compared to mine. The main reason I am not running aosp is the camera. Running aosp g2 turns into bad nexus 5 pretty much (imo). Not just the camera, there are tons of bugs there. If you want good camera - go with stock, as simple as that. LG camera drivers and ois makes videos very smooth. Grab a Rom with advanced camera drivers and install xcam. Fhd 60fps at night as good as in daylight. I will send you a video of mine if you want so you can see what I am talking about.
But yeah, aosp = ****ty camera, and there's nothing to do about it. Sorry
For the Moto X Pure, no matter what app I use, even though still pictures and videos are relatively focused and clear, when I do photosphere or panorama, the images are extremely blurry. The camera appears to drop focus from the moment the photosphere/panorama is selected, and the images come out looking like they were taking with a 320x240 camera blurred to smooth out the artifacts, when viewed at full resolution. Example attached.
It appears to be a focus issue because when I move the camera to a new capture-dot, it immediately captures a new image rather than how it was on the Nexus 5, which focused first, and then took the picture. In any case, it looks "ok" as a thumbnail sized image, but at anywhere close to full resolution, it's unusable.
This has been this way since I bought the phone, and normally I'd think it was a defect. But looking online at samples, it seemed like this was just how the Moto X Pure "worked." Yet, coming from a Nexus 5, that actually creates full resolution photospheres/panorama that are in-focus, it's really frustrating.
Has there ever been a fix for this? Or is it that my camera really has been defective this whole time, even though it works for non-photosphere/panorama images?
I'm sorry to bump, just wondering if anyone has any response to this - I've been looking for a solution since I got this phone, so any input would be great.
Just a note, I had this same problem on an LG G2. When I was running stock (5.0) google camera worked fine, but when I switched to an AOSP/CM rom (12/12.1/13) then the stitching settings would never focus before snapping (just picked some arbitrary focal point and stuck to it, instead of refocusing for every snap).
I get this on stock 6.0, 6.0.1 and CM/AOSP roms on my XT1575 - same exact problem, and same empty searches on the internet.
Nothing useful to add, just that I'm facing the exact same problem. It does not seem like it would be too difficult to fix. I'm disappointed that no one seems to care about it.
same here, really bums me out that the focus isnt good on panorama's or photo spheres!
Hi! I have a problem with my G4, These last days I've been changing many roms because I got bored of the one I had. When I decided to stay in a rom (Omni rom) I noticed hat image quality at Instagram, gplaystotre and basically everywhere is less sharpness, I mean there are like pixels that never been before. This never happened to me, I had deal with hard things in phones but never this. This affect videos as well on yt, 1080p quality is not like before. Now I'm in stock 6.0.1 ( via fastboot) because I thought that it may solve but no. I also tried many other roms but it seems like every rom now has it when it never ever images were like this. I've changed kernels, DPI, added zips to improve image quality ( got them by general forum of Android hacking, etc) and nothing. I noticed performance improved but no idea why. How can I solve it? How can my image quality on apps be like before? PS: In chrome, I go to Instagram and images quality are good, like they were. But in Instagram app images are like pixelated ( 99% of apps are, excluding websites acceded by chrome). Thanks!
With what your describing, it sounds like your device is running at a lower resolution. Changing DPI in settings can't solve this. Try downloading easy DPI changer and change resolution to 1080 ,1920, with DPI at 480. That's the default display resolution settings on the G4 plus, which I'm assuming you have since you posted here. It's worth a try

Wel that the hadware problem than software. Lenovo motorola has just used cheap oliophobic coating on len and it easily gets straches and fingerprint marks.
Best way to deal is change lens of your mobile.
Amazon have this lens, so better check them up.

Sorry I'm not meaning the Len of my camera, the problem is not my camera. The problem is that every image is like pixelated when they never were like that.
