[Q] VZW OTA? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I woke up this morning to a message on my phone about an update being ready to install? I didn't see anything else come up in search, anyone else get this message? Along those lines, if someone knows what it is, does it break root? I already upgraded to the 12B modem.
Thanks!

You upgraded to the 12B modem, but what about the 12B firmware?

Never bothered with the firmware, but wasn't the OTA a while ago for that? Thought I got around that one. hmmm...

Looks like it don't like root:

Does the TMo OTA update change the radio?

T-Mobile supposedly sent out an over the air update to correct a problem with missed calls.
Does anyone know how that works? Is there some way to get the correction if I am on CyanogenMod? Is it a radio update? If so what is the new radio version and how can I get it?
I ask because I keep on getting in trouble for not knowing that my wife tried to call me.

mine took an OTA update and it did change my radio
So you got an OTA update and it did update your radio. Are you using a stock ROM?

Verizon LG G2 System Update Available

Hi everyone,
I got a popup window notifying me about a system update that was ready to install on my Verizon LG G2. I chose not to install it, but it said I can install it later. I am rooted and I am not sure what this update is for, possibly a fix for the root exploits. Anyone else seeing this?
EDIT: Everyone is confirming that it does not break root, but if you have already installed TWRP then DO NOT ACCEPT THE UPDATE.

I got it too.... Couldn't find any info on it. I did the update and in "about phone' I still show rooted. It is still 4.2.2 so I am assuming it was a minor software issue/security fix.

Please confirm that you did the system update and can still use root apps. Also, which root method did you use. Maybe they patched the Chinese method, but not the newer method yet!
I'm getting the notification too. I won't be updating til I find out what it does.

Wow, pretty ballsy of you to accept the OTA without knowing if it would break root or custom recovery.
I hope there not trying that crap already

We have custom recovery. Why on earth would anyone do a OTA .. ever... again.... I have never. There will be a ROM based on Stock available that will include every GOOD thing from every OTA that is pushed... Patience is a virtue.

No customer recovery because TWRP is broken currently.

The Newest recovery has ADB option and is considered safe for now. My point is that why would anyone accept an OTA when it is obvious that withing a short period of time there is not only going to be a fully fixed recovery plus Custom ROM's based on the latest Stock ROM with the OTA included. Once you Root and install recovery, you kiss the carrier and their attempts at "Updates" goodbye.

Notice anything change?
i haven't rooted yet, so i told it to install later. i'll root tonight so that i know i can have it, sounds like the update doesnt take root away, it could keep you from rooting if you arent yet tho..
Oh crap, did the update and it looks like I'm soft bricked(?). I can only get to TWRP, and can't reboot the phone (always goes back to TWRP, no matter what I do, even after Factory Reset). PLEASE HELP!!
(Verizon G2)
I'm not sure if I can attribute this to the ota update but my wifi performance has been really glitchy. Constant disconnect/reconnect.
I can't say it's due 100% to the ota because wifi will occasionally get spotty due to the sheer amount of wifi APs and traffic at my workplace.
Anyone else experience this? BTW I'm rooted.

I'm in the same boat, stuck in TWRP loop won't reboot. Downloading files to get back to stock, so will try to put into download mode once everything is downloaded (2.3gb file is taking a while)...I'm sure it'll be resolved soon enough. Will report back if it works.

Nougat is here for Verizon devices!

I look at my system updates, and I see this! I couldn't believe it! Nougat is finally here!
Just checked and received it as well!
Has somebody captured the OTA file?
Can we root the android nougat?
I had Verizon before. They are known for doing updates late and completely messed up. At least they aren't late this time. I'm just miffed that they dropped it before RETUS.

You do not need root to read most system files.
It used to be in /cache but deletes itself after the flash.

I know. Since I flashed it, I couldn't pull the ota through logcat.
My update is having issues. Tried a handful of times and would get "update could not be verified" or something similar after the download would complete update. When it doesn't fail verification, the install fails after rebooting. wtf, I have tried the VZW/Moto software update program but it returns that I have the latest software. Guess that channel might not be updated yet.

What is the issue with the Verizon variant for root? I am willing to commit a good tip for a verifyable process to anyone that can do it in a reasonable timeframe. Anyone else willing to donate to the cause?
The bootloader can't be unlocked.

The device is official VZW. I also have the " device has failed verification" warning on start-up. I'm sure that's not helping things either...

Update 2.51.617.2

Just got a notification tonight about downloading and updating my Sprint HTC 10 to 2.51.617.2.
Has anyone received this update yet? I'm unlocked with Magisk root and don't want to go thru the update if it's going to break Safetynet (again!).
I got the notification too, but I have not allowed it to go in so far.
The update is actually 2.51.651.2 and is July 2017 security update. I did it yesterday without issues.

It is only the security updates? It is 802MB! That is a lot of security! I doubt it would go in on mine anyway as I have too many system modifications.

And "Performance enhancements" too, whatever they may be, as it had no further details on them.
For me, it broke the fingerprint sensor. It now works to unlock the phone only within the first 5 minutes or so after turning it off. After that, I have to use the pattern. It's like the sensor gets disabled during low-power suspend, but turning the screen on doesn't wake it back up. This started immediately after I received the update.

I took it OTA. I just got the phone a month ago and have only sim unlocked it, no root or twrp. Everything seems to be working fine still since the update.
I was unable to take the update with root and TWRP.

I'm interested to know, too. Is it a fluke or coincidence that I might fix with a factory reset, or is anyone else seeing the same thing? If I'm going to reset anyway, might be time to go ahead and root it.

It happened to mine. Sometimes the scanner works, most times it doesn't.

Same issue here. I really don't want to reset the device to find out if it helps. I was hoping yesterday's update, 2.5.651.11 would fix it but it didn't.

I downloaded the 2.42.651.63 firmware zip, but am unable to open it. 7-zip says its not a valid zip file.
Since manually installing this update, I can no longer change my SMS Notification sound using the stock SMS app.. No matter what I change it to, it still uses the default system sound. Any ideas how to fix this, without switching SMS apps?

I tried everything from Sprint's based release. Fingerprint sensor issues everytime. On Leedroid's latest release. It's not firmware related, it's software. Something Sprint put in is messing with fingerprint sensor from sleep.

Koodo / Telus updates...

Does anybody know if there is anything special with the koodo / telus builds? Even though the June update has been out for a week and a half it is still MIA in Koodoland. I know I can download the OTA and sideload it, it's what I've done the past few times, but the last time I decided to not root the phone again because I didn't feel like going through the trouble again and wanted to start installing OTAs. If there is nothing special with the koodo / telus builds I might just go ahead and do that again... but then why is it taking so long?
You don't need to root to flash an ota. Flash it in stock recovery, get the ota file from essential website.
Or are you just saying that sideloading itself is a hassle? I don't find it takes very long and is pretty straightforward. You'll probably get more answers if you post this in Q&A as well since that's what that section is for.

Yeah, I meant more the hassle part. I wanted to try it like the normal folks do.
And thanks for the suggestion, I wonder if a mod could move it... or else I'll repost it there in a little bit.

Np! For the record mine would fail even when I wasn't rooted and I ended up having to sideload anyway. Not sure why!
Got mine from Amazon.ca, unlocked. Bootloader says VARIANT: OPENAM
I'm on Koodo's network and the June update's still not here. Ended up sideloading instead. Don't know what's up with that.
