This is crazy... why is the S4 so difficult to connect to PC via USB?
I've done some searching on this and people blame cables, media transport, etc...
-My S4 can connect to my work Win7 PC reliably so far (HP Desktop)
-My S4 can NOT connect to our home Win7 PC (Toshiba Laptop). Nothing shows in DeviceManager or FileManager. Rebboted PC and S4.
-Wife's S4 connected to our home Win7 PC one time, copied some files to it.
-Wife's S4 can NOT connect to our home Win7 PC any more (with same cable but since have tried two cables one being the original Samsung)
Has anyone found a reliable fix for this? My phone's flash is filling up with pictures/videos.

Are you using the stock cable to connect it ? I've never had any issue with it being recognized even with just the stock usb device driver. You might need to reinstall drivers and use the stock cord

Hi everyone,
Since I'm new with this phone (just bought it few days ago) I really need your assistance.
My problem is probably with the usb drivers (Mass storage device). I'm running on Vista Ultimate SP2. When I connect the phone, and go to the notifications, there are two (as supposed to be). HTC Sync and the one with the USB connection. Well the one with the USB connection appears and disappears all the time.
As a result I can't sync since there is a problem with the USB driver. When I disable the Mass storage device (this is the one responsible for that), I can sync. The problem is I can't use my phone as a storage card in order to copy files. In advance I'm saying that I tried to mount the sd card...nothing.
I've tried the phone on other pcs, XP and vista... it workds everywhere fine. The notification with the USB connection is not disappearing.
Tried everything, rolling back the driver, updating etc. nothing!!
PLEASE HELP ME!!
Thanks in advance
Also remember than not all USB cables are the same.
I'm not using the original one as I lost it with the original box.
But while the Nokia DKE-2 works great for all functions, my camera and my USB HD mini-USB cable only support few features.
All of them can charge the Hero, though.
The one I'm using is the original one! Moreover, the phone connects properly with other pcs!

So the problem is Vista.
I personally used XP with only some minor problems due to the cable.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=557310
It should not be Vista... I've tried it on another pc with Vista.... no problem!!
Oops, ignore this.
Have you tried different USB port on the sick Vista PC?
Have you installed Andrid specific USB drivers? If so, uninstall and reinstall.
When you plug the cable do you get on the phone the notification for USB connection?
Adding a question to the topic:
I own a Galaxy right now and consider switching to the Hero, one thing that does not work with the Galaxy is the USB connection to my car for audio playback. The USB interface of my car can't handle multiple drives as offered by the Galaxy; e.g. with a HTC snap everything is fine.
So the question is: Does the Hero offer one drive only when connected in the USB mode?
Thanks for your help!
hi
i have touch2 t3333, when i connect it to any pc , it doesn't recognise the phone, it charges ok but wont let me do disk drive or active sync
the phone is unlocked and was on the T mobile network and has that branding
has any one any ideas
thanks in advance
Dave
What operating system are you running on the PCs you are trying to connect to? If it is pre-Vista then you will need active sync running. If it is Vista or 7 it should recognize the phone as a mobile device. Try a soft reset while connected. I've had to do this with one of the pdas I've had. Also if you are connecting to a usb hub it might tell you it is charging but might not actually be connected. Try connecting to a usb port on the pc or another usb port if it has two.

Thanks guys will have a go now
This is a new problem for me.
After successfully sorting out all the troubles of connecting SGS to KIES, and been using it happily for almost a month, now I'm facing another trouble which is quite big this time.
Windows Vista (32-bit) and Windows 7 (64-bit) are now can't recognize the phone when connected through the USB. Got a message says the USB Device/Hardware Is Not Recognized.
I'm using the SGS original cable. The cable was working perfectly and now suddenly it doesn't work in data mode but still able to recharge the phone battery.
Am I having a cable problem? Or worst, the USB connector (on the phone) problem? I tried to clean the USB connector on the phone but still can't connect the phone to my computers.
Does anybody here having the same problem as well?
I just gave up with my PC, same problem
In then end I set up a VMware XP machine to sync
Else I use my laptop
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA App
I sometimes have a problem with KIES detecting my phone. What I sometimes have to do is connect the phone with KIES loaded, go to device manager, show hidden devices then uninstall the phone (sometimes has error on device, sometimes not) then disconnect then reconnect phone.
Such a faff but using KIES to check for firmware update lol
This may not help ya but worth a thought, Im on Win7 64
I did not have any problem connecting the phone to KIES, I was able to upgrade the firmware from JF4 to JG4, and been a happy SGS owner for a month now.
But yesterday I suddenly can't connect the phone to any computers. My laptop (Win Vista 32-bit) said that a USB device connected is not recognized. I reinstall Kies in my laptop and same thing happen. Then I switch to my PC (Win7 64-bit), USB device not recognized also appear. Reinstall Kies, still no luck.
What I just realized is that there is NO USB Indicator in the SGS notification bar!
Does that mean that the USB connector on the phone going bad?
I still able to recharge the battery but the USB icon dont show up.
I am now seriously considering the quality of Samsung Galaxy S! Way too much problems for average owner, and even for savvy owners this is just over the top!
What should I do now?
Find another computer or install VMWear and see once and for all if its your phone at fault. Also worst case do a factory reset. If no go then you might have a hardware problem. You could always try Mass Storage mode and see if you can mount the phone as external drive. Its not really the phones fault but I would say its KIES, its just a piece of ****. I have never been able to connect to it using 3 computers and I would say I know what i'm doing since I work in i.t. Also did you replace your Launcher recently? As KIES needs TouchWhiz as default launcher to work
I just tried to connect SGS to another laptop (Win XP 32-bit SP3, no KIES though). Same thing, the USB device is not recognized baloon show up and no USB indicator in the SGS status bar.
I'm going to Samsung Service Center, after calling them, they suggest me to bring the phone to the nearest Samsung Center. They said that this is not the first time and also said that the problem might be the connector or the cable.
have you read this ? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8107646&postcount=50
Seems kies has a bug where it can't work with files with 16chrs or more.. Told ya KIES is a piece of ****
Yes, But did you try the Mass storage mode
Settings/About/USB
I always just use Mass Storage mode to xfer files. KIES is crap.
As I said previously, my SGS has no problem at all connecting to Kies. USB Mass storage is working perfectly as well.
The problem I'm having now is the hardware (the cable or the interface) I guess, since I still can recharge the phone using the charger or the USB cable.
ps. I'm using Kies from Australia, the 1.5.1.10083.
Have you looked at the pins on the phone? are they screwed? Can you somehow find or burrow another Mini-Usb cable to test ? I have heaps as some of my external hdd's use mini-usb but you might have to buy a new cable.
Try this.. I wrote this a while back.. It may help. I know you suspect it's hardware, but it might be worth trying anyway.

Thanks for the help guys!
It's purely hardware problem. Yesterday I brought it to local Samsung Service Center, and because they said this is not the first timer, the technician quickly open the device and gosh... dust and some fungus were collected near the microUSB port! I admit I never close the USB port, just left it open after use, my bad!
After some cleaning and testing, the microUSB is working again.
Now I'm a happy SGS user again!
but that doesn't explain how it works on one Windows (Win7) but not on another Windows (WinXP)

The SGS wasn't recognized in ALL Windows versions, since it was a hardware problem.
Now SGS is recognized in ALL Windows versions.
download "usbdeview" and delete the usb drivers for the specific device.
Has anyone been able to/or know how to the focus recognized by windows 7 64 bit, its not even showing up in my device manager.
I have no problems syncing wirelessly or w/ USB cable on my home laptop (Ultimate 64-bit) and my work laptop (Enterprise 64-bit).
Michael.
I didn't have any issues using it with Windows 7 64-bit either (Ultimate and Home Premium).
Sorry, I know it's no help, but I have a laptop and PC both running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit with no troubles, including wifi sync with the PC.
no problems here. Are you connecting directly to PC or to a USB hub. I had problems before with USB hub.
I think it might be my cable after looking more into it. Thanks
FWIW, I am using the USB cable that came with my Nokia N900 (also using the Nokia N900 charger).
Michael.
I am having the same problem.
Windows Phone 7 doesn't use Windows Mobile Device Manager. It uses Zune. You won't get a WP7 phone to show up in WMDM on any computer.
Zune will still have to communicate to the phone via device driver.
I just connected mine via USB cable and looked in Device Manager under Portable Devices and the SAMSUNG SGH-i917 is there.
Michael.
Did you try installing Zune manually? I believe that's what I did first.
http://zune.net/en-US/products/software/download/default.htm
I'm running 64 bit Windows 7
Do you have your phone set to be a tethered modem? I run win7 64-bit, and the samsung driver fails to install every time.. If you're just looking to see your phone, open up diag and hit *#7284# (if I remember correctly, turn it back to zune-sync and plug your phone in.. Zune will autostart and it'll recognize the phone.
Probably no dice on tethering with it though, unless samsung releases a new driver, or possibly a different installation method.
Focus and Win7 64
I had the same problem with my focus. The only thing that ultimately worked for me was to plug it into a different USB Port. It was recognized as a new device and I haven't had the problem since.
If you're talking about tethering, try this to install the drivers:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=9575346#post9575346
I've never had any problems just connecting to Zune in the normal sync mode.
Hi Guys
I recently acquired one of the 10.1 LE's and immediately ran into problems with my PC refusing to recognize the Tab. I searched high and low for a solution, including installing Kies, the USB drivers and ever other mad trick people suggested, but nothing worked.
What made this even worse was the Tab would charge while plugged into the PC, so the cable must have been working... well that assumption was wrong, read on.
I live in the UK and the Tab 10.1 is not available here yet, but I realised the 7" Tab appeared to have the same charger and usb cable, so I took a chance and purchased one of these, suddenly everything started working and my PC picks up the tab.
So the moral of the story is, if your does not work neither, try a different cable
What do to when one only has one cable. Where might I get another? Have tried to connect to two different computers already. Tab give notification but no reaction from computers. Kies will not transfer videos. Will contact Samsung support.
Have already downloaded device usb drivers from Samsung. Let Kies look for drivers but no avail. Any help would be appreciated. Tab showed connect one time, but pc wouldn't react. Window 7 64-bit and XP service pack 3.
Turn off USB Debugging!!!!! You're computer will not recognize your device if debugging is on. Turn it off.
