Poor games performance on i9505 - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi. I really love my i9505, it's a great phone with cool features and all, but there's one thing that's really annoying about this phone- games performance. Eg. when playing GTA San Andreas I have maximum 30FPS even on lowest settings. On Real Racing 3 the situation is similar. I thought Sanpdragon 600 and Adreno 320 is powerful enough to run this games like a charm and now i'm dissapointed. Are there any modofications for i9505 that may improve gaming experience? I've tried OC already but no result. The other this I cannot go more than 30 FPS in games, even on lowest settings and I don't know if it's my phone's fault or software bug. Currently I'm running on Jamal's GE 4.4.2 ROM and ktoonez kernel. What are your settings/roms/kernels for best gaming experience? Anyone help? Thanks in advance.

Gta sa for android is buggy and not optimized. Even on snapdragon 800 devices the fps is still relatively low.

Haha, yeah I have to agree with that one. I can't even load a saved game on it as it create a corrupted safe file.

I too bought a S4 just three days ago. I knew that that the touchwiz-ui is laggy, it didn't bother me but I really thought the hardware would be good enough to run recent games lag-free. I was wrong.
Small games like subway surfers or temple run run smoothly but bigger games like Real Racing 3 lag and stutter. I am currently on stock rom with android 4.3, does it still lag with 4.4.2 google edition roms or aosp roms?

I haven't noticed any lag with any of the games mentioned. Maybe try overclocking your CPU and GPU

I did not have game performance issues with the 4.2 stock ROM back then, but IDK about stock 4.3.
Some AOSP-ROMs are slower in games than stock, others are faster. It also depends on the Kernel you are using of course.
A really fast ROM is broodplank's AOSP from source, you can find it in the i9505 original Android development thread. I am using it with broodplank's stock Kernel and changed some options via the broodparts-app.
I am very satisfied with its performance and stability, so you can give it a try. It is pure AOSP, though, so you lose all TW features. With XPOSED/Gravitybox, you can add some customizing features, which is enough for me. Some other features like iView and multiwindows are gone, but I don't really miss them.
But of course your requirements could be different, so you have to find out what's best suited for you by trying it out.

It seems like not a single game is optimized for this phone. Dead Trigger 2, Shadowgun DZ, Vice City, Most Wanted, RIptide GP2..... low fps and frame drops. Horrible.
Not to mention stuttering in games like ninja fruit and angry birds where it drops every couple of seconds to 50 or so.

Dead Trigger 2, Riptide GP2, Most Wanted (defaulted reflection?), Shadowgun DZ is smooth on max
The only problem I have is with all the Rockstar and EA games

27 fps average on NFS MW is far from smooth. The I9500 gets 40-60 fps.
Riptide GP2 is smooth when you lower the resolution but I expected it to run 30 and over on max res, but lower resolution isn't noticeable so it's ok.
Dead Trigger 2 and Shadowgun DZ run exactly the same, there are lag spikes every couple of seconds where it drops up to 10 frames, which is really bad. Take a look at the vid below, bad quality but you can kinda see the fps meter and how the frames drop from 30 to 24/23/21. Same thing with Dead trigger 2.
For example at 0:24 it drops from 30 to 22 and then quickly goes back up to 30.

You're not rooted so you can't check, but the fps meter confirms that what I'm seeing are indeed fps drops. Maybe you aren't noticing them, I just don't get how. It obviously lags and spoils your gaming experience...

only happens to me when I am inside with the heater turned on and one overheated phone.

The problem is not the phone,the game maker is the one to blame because they didn't optimize their games to our phone because of the many android phones around,imagine how much time it takes to optimize a game,maybe if samsung pays them we will all have a lag free games

Yes but its fair to say that this phone doesn' offer smooth gaming, reason is irrelevant.
And yeah there are too many phones to be optimized for, this is why one does not buy an android phone for gaming -_-

Thermal throttling is something that is present in all phones afaik. Games lag on the I9505 when it's cool as well, as on the screenshots and video I posted. When it hits some temp over 50 or so everything lags even more but that's another topic.

I think there is a fix for this problem....i think in themes and apps, someone posted how to make ur CPU go at the same speed when the game starts and after one hour of play....even tough the phone gets hot, it runs the games smooth and well. My i9505 runs any game without lag, on the right Rom with the right settings, no lag at all...Try different settings guys and keep the best one for your phone

Below is link to the Xposed module that disables DVFS, is that what you are referring to? It seems to solve the issue of the CPU throttling and seems essential if you're gaming a lot on your phone.

I don't see the point in dealing with thermal throttling when the phone drops frames even when it's cool.

Bad snapdragon 800? or just software slowing it down?

noticed that i only have 1gb free of ram when i restart too, but back to the topic. When playing games like Asphalt 8, eternity warriors 2, or even watching youtube, the phone tends to stutter, but the "lag" is happening on rhythm. EX: when loading frames, goes from 1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4, but on every "4", it lags/stutters. it also happens when iim watching youtube videos. i tried the 3dmark benchmark, and it seemed to run completely fine. anyone else having this issue? or are there going to be performance updates with 4.3? its really getting obnoxious not being able to play my favorite games. The odd thing, is that it plays smoothly on pre-downloaded movies(mxplayer) and not-as-3d-heavy games. I thought the snapdragon 800 would be able to handle some of the higher end games? my atrix 4g runs riptide better than my G2......HELP! and thanks in advance.

I experienced the same thing, but like you said only in some games. I played a game that has a frames-per-second display, and for the most part it runs at 60 while older phones could only manage 40. But it does dip down to 40 then right back to 60 regularly as you said. It has to be a software or thermal throttling issue. But I have hope, this is one of the first devices to have the Snapdragon 800, and I bet they are working on it. I would welcome a 4.3 update that solves the performance issue too!

Considering the Nexus4 ppwer. Why is it.

Why some mid range games lag? Before I update the gpu and flash zip to optimize dalvic and bionic. They lag. It is tolerable for many but not for me. Also after I flash and zips and the gpu update still its lags. You dont have the smoothness that you expect in the Nexus 4 while playing. Games lime temple runs, and vector.
Btw Im all stock but rooted.

It could be your kernel settings. Some games aren't optimized well. Despicable Me sometimes lags on Android but it's butter smooth on iOS, while a game like Subway surfers is very smooth on Android, lags like hell on all iPhones.

There are only few games those are optimizated for Android, but the majority runs really bad! Look at games like The Walking Dead (Telltale), Android port is horrible than the iPhone one.

Subway is light, NFS Most Wanted too, every GTA (expecially SA) can run at 60 FPS only with low-med settings (with max settings they're almost unplayable with a stock Nexus 4), and they don't seem to be well optimized... Anyway they're really funny even with med graphics

I still haven't tried GTA on my N4, All GTA games worked at 60fps on my ex-Note II, and it had a Mali 400 which i think is weaker than Adreno 320.

Ok then, but I doubt you maxed them. GTAs are very heavy and there is no device that can handle them maxed at 60 FPS for now, trust me.

Lol it was without doubt working on Max settings, im not 100% sure was it constant 60fps but it NEVER lagged and it never fell under lets say 30-40.... why would i lie? I don't even have the note 2 anymore

Every benchmark admit that the Nexus 4 is much more powerful than Note 2 in gaming (http://www.phonearena.com/news/Benc...s-Optimus-G-Pro-vs-Nexus-4-vs-HTC-One_id41542).
I don't know, maybe it's the thermal trhottling, that's really really strange.

Most likely, all Qualcomm phones i had (from S1 to S4) were prone to heating. Exynos was cooler but many Samsung flagships (S2,S3,S4,NI,NII,NIII) have eMMC brick bugs...aka Sudden death syndrome...thats why i sold my Note, i was afraid it would stop working

I heard that... It isn't such a problem if you don't flash a ROM with the active bug (two summers ago Samsung relased a ROM with the comand to active the bug for S2, many devices died :\).
Anyway, I'm trying again GTA SA with my Nexus 4 (High settings, shadow med, low reflection, full resolution) and it goes at + or - 40 FPS, just saying...

Have you tried undervolting for less heat? I think 700uV for 184mhz and 1025uV for 1512mhz is the limit, anything under that is an instant crash

Hey man. Does undevolting requires underclocking? Or does undervolting affects the performance or just fix the thermal throtling?

When I change kernel\ROM the first thing I do is setting Trickster, and I've a decent Undervoltage.
I have a nominal CPU and the limit for 1512, in my case, is only 10625. Anyway, I had problem with temperature with 4.2.2, but from 4.3 it got better and better

Absolutely not, uv and uc are different things. Undervolting doesn't fix thermal throtling, but minor voltage is equal at minor warm (Did i write it right?)

[Q] Fixing bad 3d performance?

Hello,
So it seems the Note 4 is not that good at 3d performance in quiet a few games, especially Grand Theft Auto 3 (atleast with snapdragon 805, not sure about the other chip they use). I presume this is because it renders at the screens native resolution, and that the snapdragon 805 is not good enough for that.
If that be the case, is it possible to force game applications to render at a lower resolution, thus making the game less jittery? I have root.
In anomaly 2 it quite good
Maybe you shouldnt use power saving mode when play these heavy 3d game

Ive come to the conclusion that thermal throttling is to blame. I haven't play a heavy 3d game without it dropping frames within 10 minutes. It an issue that needs to be addressed.
I've been able to play modern combat 5 and dead effect without any slowdowns. Exynos Note 4.

It does require root. Unfortunately I have att version and no root yet. Wish I could use this, as some of the higher end games don't run great at 1440p.

Seems to work with improving performance in the brief time I spent testing it, but it messes up the UI on a things, such is expected.

Thats correct bro, i came from S5 SD 801 and vice city (wich is more heavy than gta3) run smooth until i hit 20 mins and begins to slowdown.
I dont know at what resolution runs GTA VC on note 4 but i maxed out all settings and is super fluid and no slow downs, i being playin for 30 minutes and the smooth its not gone so far.

I also have noticed some problems with Real Racing 3 and 3d Mark bench. Not as smooth as I've expected. Also on AnTuTu I get 40-49k one or two times even below 38k results so I think there is some thing we don't know about our device. I hope when Lolipop arrives this problems will be solved.
thats terrible for a 800$~ phone ! mine does excellent job on dead trigger 2 and nova 3 and riptide ! i have the exynos verison. i just got it i haven't downloaded any more games but im downloading order and chaos and dungeon hunter !

[Q] huge lag on Brothers in Arms 3!

I just bought the phone (it's Exynos) and the first thing i installed was antutu benchmark, which gave me 52000 which was even higher than the note 4 in the list!! Anyway, it proved that the phone is really good. Now the first game i've installed on it is BIA3, but im having bad problems playing it. it gives me around 16-20 fps only, but i've seen this game run on htc one with more than 25 fps! Also someone else had a problem with spider man which was again weird, and he said that it was the only game doing this!
So now im guessing that these games are running on the 4 weak cpu's, instead of the strong ones...anyone has any ideas on it or how to fix it?
Also could you owners of the snapdragon version share your experience on these two games?
I opened clash of clans, and it was again really laggy...it wasn't before. I thought that the ram being almost full had to do something with it, so i restarted the phone and it played good for about 5 minutes and then the lag started. I tested this on BIA but again it was laggy even in the first 5 minutes of restart.
It's my first samsung phone ever, and i am not satisfied with it!
I ran an another antutu benchmark, and the results were good again,, so the problem must be with the games!
Maybe a way to force use the strong cpu's will help! Any ideas on how to do this?

Do you really think if display is 2k that means all games run in 2k resolution, lol?
well you have a point, but that must not be it. because i dont think that this phone in unable to run even 4k clash of clans smoothly!

Poor gaming performance - Galaxy Note 4

Hey all.
So I would expect a 500 quid phone to be able to play the latest and greatest mobile games without stutter. Unfortunately this is not the case, with my most recent example being Real Racing 3. This game has terrible stutter and a frame rate of maybe 20fps if i am lucky.
I suspect this is partly to do with screen resolution, however is there a way to actually make the Galaxy Note 4 a good gaming device? I have root.
@captainbirdseye86 Lower the screen resolution with nomone apk from google play there is a thread about it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4/help/downscale-resolution-to-1080p-to-t2886177 and the apk link is here https://play.google.com/store/apps/...=nomone&pcampaignid=APPU_6l3OVKeSLZPaav6hgdAK also try to disable dvfs with xposed framework install a custom kernel (more performance depending on your settings but also more battery drain) and try to have a stock ROM as much as possible yeah all those customized Roms are way better but nothing is perfect all those mods costs on the performance also greenify your apps and system apps as much as you can...just some tips

Good work man. I'll just add closing background apps and messing with the minimum/maximum GPU/CPU clock.

it is very disappointing indeed .. I rarely play games, but Asphalt 8 is my favourite and it is just unplayable on my sd805 note 4.
I have paid £587 for the device, and apparently have to root it and spend hours if not days tweaking it to be able to play some games.. Not a good job from Samsung in this department ...

The answer to all your performance problems is a clean bug free pure google ROM I don't know if you can install one on the SD since I have the octa one but a ROM without all those s crap and bloatware equals to more performance if the ROM of course is properly cooked

I heard a dev talk that there isn't much to be gained by ocing the GPU and as far as CPU oc goes the more you push it the less time it will stay on that frequency because overheating could be 5 minutes away at full throttle oh and if you oc the GPU keep in mind that some voltage tuning might be necessary on the octa one I had stuttering on ultimate and persues kernels it varies from device to device...

If you encounter problems with GPU OC, just increase the voltage a little bit. Don't see a problem there. When I talk about GPU/CPU management I mean mainly to increase the minimum GPU clock as some games don't demand enough of our device (haven't tested). Even with DVFS disabled I get a lot of 20ish fps playing spider man unlimited and the phone isn't even warm. It means the game is not requesting enough power. This is something I want to test, to force a high GPU clock with DVFS disabled and see what happens, but there's no kernel able to do that on exynos yet. Have you tested this? Do you know a way to control GPU clock on exynos or do you think they'll ever implement it?

It is very unfortunate to say that every smatphone in the world is like this. I'm a fan of asphalt 8 myself so I can say about it. I was playing the game on my girlfriend's iphone 6 which has the best GPU on a smartphone in my opinion + 750p resolution = insane graphics performance, right?? Sure! IF you don't throttle like crazy. Even with this insane combination the game hits 20ish fps here and there while the phone barely gets warm.
If you want to play the game with high fps without rooting just lower the graphics in options -> display. I was playing on high after all the mods I've done but it gets so hot and the battery runs out SO FAST that now I'm just playing on low/very low. The quality difference is minimum and you can play for a looong time.

i am not sure why the games you are playing got low fps, i have played many games including BIA3, NFS MW , Dead Trigger 2 , BatMan, MC3 , Asphalt 8 etc
I so far felt no stuttering or any slowness even no Hot device over my Exynos

You live in a cold place? Don't play for long periods? Many games run perfect on complete stock, sure! It isn't that bad.
@gabrielgon thank you for your time explaining this so yeah I get stuttering on God of fire let's say I will have to increase the gpu voltages table by at least 50 to make the problem ALMOST disappear now about low fps yeah also on galaxy on fire when a ship explodes I get some fps drop it is quite hilarious really thinking that this monster reaches out it's limits after some brainstorming though I figured I should reduce the resolution to 1080p or even 720 and woala no fps drops although the stuttering is still there so I guess I will have to increase the gpu frequency although I don't know if there is a way to do this...I will try to search a little
EDIT: OK so I used two apps that let you control the gpu frequency but it won't work on one app the function was greased out and on the other I kept pushing the button but it never took me to the menu to change the gpu frequency my guess is since the kernel doesn't support neither will the apps I don't think we will find any out there to do it if the kernel doesn't support it...

Yes. I never played more then 40mins and the normal temp around is about 30C

Ok, some stuff I can help you with:
Increasing the voltage doesn't increase performance, this only makes your phone use more energy. People usually undervolt their phones to get better battery life but when it gets too undervolted the phone gets unstable. That's why when you overclock you might need to increase the voltage, to keep it stable.
You won't be able to mess with GPU frequency unless your kernel support it. Maybe if you are a snapdragon user (I'm not sure), but on exynos you won't.
Downscaling resolution helps. There's a thread about it here. Good luck!

That's probably the battery temperature, but either way that's pretty dam good!! After 10-15 minutes you'll probably reach the heat peak already so that's enough for testing. Good to know you're having a good experience!

Thank you gabrielgon, note 4 is the first galaxy phone I am reluctant to root. I just don't have the time I had years ago.
I kind of disagree with you that all phones experience these issues. My previous note 1, 2 and 3 had no such problems.
That is just new to me. With all my previous note phones, I could just download any game (most likely asphalt ) and play as long as I want.
It is annoying that my note 3 (which I still keep) is capable of playing Asphalt 8 on max settings for hours with absolutely no issues and yet my shiny new note 4 just struggling with that.
I think samsung just should not have adopted the 2k display technology so early. Obviously the hardware is not there yet.
I personally do no see any difference pixel wise from the display in my note 3.
Yes, the note 4 has brighter and more accurate colour wise display and that is all they should have change.

Mate my note 4 hasn't stuttered once during any game. At all so not sure why yours is?
I think you should try Stock and factory reset.

hi man, are you with sd805? if so, try asphalt 8 (on max settings) for 20min.

stock reset is the first thing I always do. it did not change anything.

Using the 910F, doesn't stutter on emulation, heavy 3D games ?!? Just doesn't stutter, sorry man i'm not seeing it.
But yea the 805 yea, i'm not on stock but even when i was it seemed to be fine.

that is cool man. I played with 3 note 4 (returned the first 2 because of defective displays and overheating) and they all had this issue.
It is not that I dont believe you, but I have to see it to believe it
My experience on the Note 4 is virtually the same as my experience on the Note 2, a device which is over two years old!
I do prefer Exynos, but I purchased the Snapdragon because it is the most supported SoC on the market, for now.
I'll make sure my next device sports an Exynos, I miss my Wolfson and Noticeable Performance Boosts, overall, going from one Exynos generation to the other.
