I used to play GTA vice city in my note 2 N7100. It was so smooth, now im playing the same game but it feels laggy. It looks like im playing below 30 fps.
I think its something with the game or driver issue. Anyone with same problem?
Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
Haven't had any lag on a single game I have played myself, although GTA isn't one of them. Perhaps there is a compatibility issue. One thing is for sure, it isn't the I9505 being too slow.

This happens in many games. It shouldnt, but it does. And it is known and odd issue.
I play lot of 2D games like Hill climb racing, bubble shooter etc and those games used to play fine on last year's hardware. Even if we are talking about 1080P screens, these games play fine on Oppo Find 5 which has same GPU as ours and inferior Krait 200 CPU. And it plays those games fine. But microstutter is experienced on I9505 as well as HTC One. Both of them are using S600 chip.
A lot of tinkering and manual CPU frequency lock at max speed (manually or though setcpu profiles ) reduces the jitter and microstutter, but it does not still completely eliminates it.
Hell these games play fine on Mediatek MTK6589 SoC.
I am not able to solve this on my either S600 phones for over a month now.
It is not SGS4 exclusive issue. Either these games are not optimised for S600 or governors on these phones are not ramping up GPU clock when required or there is thermal throttling happening.

Try setting the GPU Governor to performance while you are playing to see if that solves the issue.

That is exactly what I do. In SetCPU I have created custom profiles for games.
It just reduces the jitter, does not eliminate it. Funny thing is, some more heavy games play just fine.
same issue
i have the same issue with vice city, on s3 it was so smooth and now i uninstalled the game because i dont like shuttering... it was lagging like hell nfs most wanted, carmageddon etc are working great.
What I have seen is that the SoC Heats up very quick and it begins to throttle down CPU and GPU frequencies to cool itself! Our phones should theoretically be 1.9GHz beasts and they are..... for 15 to 20secs! Then everything goes to hell as the CPU throttles down to 918MHz (GPU too goes down) and it actually becomes slower than last year's Phones!
I hate Mobile technologies! My Acer Iconia W700Pro behaves the same! It has an Intel Core i5 3317U CPU with an Intel 4000HD Graphics GPU and it should be able to play many games without problems but Because of throttling it is actually Slower than an i3 CPU if you rum longer tasks!
Somebody must begin thinking of new ways to cool these CPUs instead of ramping Up MHz just so manufacturers can brag about it!
That's why I keep my Note 2 (I sold my S4 already, mainly because of the pen)
It's very cool, no throlling in any case, perfect smooth with no lag at all. Stability test proved it the best also.
I don't know why reviewers and many people keep screwing about benchmark and raw power. They are BS and do not convert to the real experience.
Maybe because these games are not optimized for FHD resolution?
They play well on i9500. I really want octa but 4G is fast where I live.

Nope. If that was the case they would have problems with my i9500 or Oppo Find 5. They work fine on these.
9500 does not even get warm playing Hill climb racing.
This issue is specific to Snapdragon S600 powered phones.
From my Galaxy S4 Exynos, in your face.....
Should I exchange my i9505 for i9500 or wait for solution or software update that fixes this lag?
Have you activated the 4x MSAA under Developer options?
Many of my games started to lag quite alot after i enabled that. So i turned it off and every games runs buttery smooth.
Maybe if you make a profile to undervolt and underclock your phone, just to prevent it to get too warm, the the throttling won't underclock teh GPU because of war issues.
I just Undervolt 50mv on all frequencies and it seems fine on all games!

Interesting, can you please give some brief steps to achive it? Which app you use and setting etc. Are you sure, it works? For example, if you disable undervolt/underclock, some games start to lagg?
i have both GTA 3 and vice city aswell as modern combat 3 and 4, and all of them works fine on my S4, although i have the octacore i9500 version.
I have the i9500 version ( Octa ), and faces this problem a lot and also most of the times the phone gets hot and starts draining the battery too fast !! so it's not throttling at all with this temperature and battery drain !!
I had this problem with Note2 but not as much as S4 ( and without getting hot or eating the battery !! ).. the S4 sometimes gives me as low as 1FPS or less sometimes ( measuring by eye )

And do you notice overheating when playing? How bad is it? Can you compare it with your previous phone?
I have a i9505 and are not that butter smooth as on my old i9300. But then again after the latest MEA update it's better then before. Not perfect but its something. This sure means they can fix it over time. I did not own a i9300 for long but I assume at launch that phone had the same problems as this one. After a while with update the phone became smooth right?
About the heating issues. I don't really think its a problem. CPU and GPU will get hot while playing games like Modern Combat 4. The iPhone 5 also gets really hot so its nothing abnormal. Mine is getting hot while playing games but not concerning hot.

I use Ktoonsez Kernel. It comes with an app that lets you control all that.:good:
For how to install the kernel though, I'd rather not give any advice on that, because I have done quite a mess on my own device on my mistakes during the instalation. I never had any problems installing Kernels on my Galaxy S2, S3 and Note2, but on the S4 I'm still pretty inexperient.
On the Kernel and Roms foruns you will find plenty XDA users that can help you on the installing process sweetly though!
Hi. I really love my i9505, it's a great phone with cool features and all, but there's one thing that's really annoying about this phone- games performance. Eg. when playing GTA San Andreas I have maximum 30FPS even on lowest settings. On Real Racing 3 the situation is similar. I thought Sanpdragon 600 and Adreno 320 is powerful enough to run this games like a charm and now i'm dissapointed. Are there any modofications for i9505 that may improve gaming experience? I've tried OC already but no result. The other this I cannot go more than 30 FPS in games, even on lowest settings and I don't know if it's my phone's fault or software bug. Currently I'm running on Jamal's GE 4.4.2 ROM and ktoonez kernel. What are your settings/roms/kernels for best gaming experience? Anyone help? Thanks in advance.
Kind regards

I too bought a S4 just three days ago. I knew that that the touchwiz-ui is laggy, it didn't bother me but I really thought the hardware would be good enough to run recent games lag-free. I was wrong.
Small games like subway surfers or temple run run smoothly but bigger games like Real Racing 3 lag and stutter. I am currently on stock rom with android 4.3, does it still lag with 4.4.2 google edition roms or aosp roms?
I haven't noticed any lag with any of the games mentioned. Maybe try overclocking your CPU and GPU

I did not have game performance issues with the 4.2 stock ROM back then, but IDK about stock 4.3.
Some AOSP-ROMs are slower in games than stock, others are faster. It also depends on the Kernel you are using of course.
A really fast ROM is broodplank's AOSP from source, you can find it in the i9505 original Android development thread. I am using it with broodplank's stock Kernel and changed some options via the broodparts-app.
I am very satisfied with its performance and stability, so you can give it a try. It is pure AOSP, though, so you lose all TW features. With XPOSED/Gravitybox, you can add some customizing features, which is enough for me. Some other features like iView and multiwindows are gone, but I don't really miss them.
But of course your requirements could be different, so you have to find out what's best suited for you by trying it out.
Same problem. Did anyone find a solution?
It seems like not a single game is optimized for this phone. Dead Trigger 2, Shadowgun DZ, Vice City, Most Wanted, RIptide GP2..... low fps and frame drops. Horrible.
Not to mention stuttering in games like ninja fruit and angry birds where it drops every couple of seconds to 50 or so.

27 fps average on NFS MW is far from smooth. The I9500 gets 40-60 fps.
Riptide GP2 is smooth when you lower the resolution but I expected it to run 30 and over on max res, but lower resolution isn't noticeable so it's ok.
Dead Trigger 2 and Shadowgun DZ run exactly the same, there are lag spikes every couple of seconds where it drops up to 10 frames, which is really bad. Take a look at the vid below, bad quality but you can kinda see the fps meter and how the frames drop from 30 to 24/23/21. Same thing with Dead trigger 2.
For example at 0:24 it drops from 30 to 22 and then quickly goes back up to 30.

30 is decent but those lag spikes....
You're not rooted so you can't check, but the fps meter confirms that what I'm seeing are indeed fps drops. Maybe you aren't noticing them, I just don't get how. It obviously lags and spoils your gaming experience...

only happens to me when I am inside with the heater turned on and one overheated phone.
The problem is not the phone, the game maker is the one to blame because they didn't optimize their games to our phone because of the many android phones around, imagine how much time it takes to optimize a game, maybe if samsung pays them we will all have a lag free games

And yeah there are too many phones to be optimized for, this is why one does not buy an android phone for gaming -_-

Thermal throttling is something that is present in all phones afaik. Games lag on the I9505 when it's cool as well, as on the screenshots and video I posted. When it hits some temp over 50 or so everything lags even more but that's another topic.

Below is link to the Xposed module that disables DVFS, is that what you are referring to? It seems to solve the issue of the CPU throttling and seems essential if you're gaming a lot on your phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2674928
I don't see the point in dealing with thermal throttling when the phone drops frames even when it's cool.
I have been playing allot of games on my G3 and maxing the graphics settings to the max. I have had no frame rate issues on ultra setting with the most demanding games on the play store. Just for info, I play Dead Trigger 2, Riptide GP 2, Shadowgun, and other high end 3D games. I also play psp games upscaled to native resolution and most games play at full speed. Even God Of War. That is awesome.
I have yet to see the snapdragon 801 get bottlenecked by the 2k display playing even the highest level 3D games. Also the soc rarely throttles and I notice that the cpu cores do not all get utilized which tells me the 801 is more than adequate.
How about you guys? You can talk about anything. The thread is not centered around gaming. Thats just the most demanding thing I do on my phone. ?

I've noticed heavy throttling when I play games while the device is charging, which is understandable because the battery get quite hot while it charges.

Yeah when i play demanding games like dead trigger, after 10 minutes the cpu throttles to 1.5ghz max. That is only while charging. But no lag happens still. Besides it has to with 2 amps of current flowing in.
Can you tell me your settings for your psp emulator, which emulator and which version of the emulator you're using? I'm trying to play GOW GOS but its either dark or lag.
My phone throttle while web browsing sites as xda ... No other apps running.
GTA San Andreas chokes it a bit... but I haven't seen a phone able to run this maxed out, it's terribly optimised.
Hello,
So it seems the Note 4 is not that good at 3d performance in quiet a few games, especially Grand Theft Auto 3 (atleast with snapdragon 805, not sure about the other chip they use). I presume this is because it renders at the screens native resolution, and that the snapdragon 805 is not good enough for that.
If that be the case, is it possible to force game applications to render at a lower resolution, thus making the game less jittery? I have root.
In anomaly 2 it quite good
Maybe you shouldnt use power saving mode when play these heavy 3d game

Ive come to the conclusion that thermal throttling is to blame. I haven't play a heavy 3d game without it dropping frames within 10 minutes. It an issue that needs to be addressed.
I've been able to play modern combat 5 and dead effect without any slowdowns. Exynos Note 4.

It does require root. Unfortunately I have att version and no root yet. Wish I could use this, as some of the higher end games don't run great at 1440p.

Thats correct bro, i came from S5 SD 801 and vice city (wich is more heavy than gta3) run smooth until i hit 20 mins and begins to slowdown.
I dont know at what resolution runs GTA VC on note 4 but i maxed out all settings and is super fluid and no slow downs, i being playin for 30 minutes and the smooth its not gone so far.
exynos variant.
I also have noticed some problems with Real Racing 3 and 3d Mark bench. Not as smooth as I've expected. Also on AnTuTu I get 40-49k one or two times even below 38k results so I think there is some thing we don't know about our device. I hope when Lolipop arrives this problems will be solved.
thats terrible for a 800$~ phone ! mine does excellent job on dead trigger 2 and nova 3 and riptide ! i have the exynos verison. i just got it i haven't downloaded any more games but im downloading order and chaos and dungeon hunter !
I just bought the phone (it's Exynos) and the first thing i installed was antutu benchmark, which gave me 52000 which was even higher than the note 4 in the list!! Anyway, it proved that the phone is really good. Now the first game i've installed on it is BIA3, but im having bad problems playing it. it gives me around 16-20 fps only, but i've seen this game run on htc one with more than 25 fps! Also someone else had a problem with spider man which was again weird, and he said that it was the only game doing this!
So now im guessing that these games are running on the 4 weak cpu's, instead of the strong ones...anyone has any ideas on it or how to fix it?
Also could you owners of the snapdragon version share your experience on these two games?
I opened clash of clans, and it was again really laggy...it wasn't before. I thought that the ram being almost full had to do something with it, so i restarted the phone and it played good for about 5 minutes and then the lag started. I tested this on BIA but again it was laggy even in the first 5 minutes of restart.
It's my first samsung phone ever, and i am not satisfied with it!
I ran an another antutu benchmark, and the results were good again,, so the problem must be with the games!
Maybe a way to force use the strong cpu's will help! Any ideas on how to do this?
Its because of 2k Screen .
