[Q] How to prevent all OTA updates - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a N900A with a newer build that so far does not support rooting without knox issues so I am waiting patiently. When I got home from work yesterday and connected to my home wifi the damn thing immediately started downloading a new update. It won't tell me what it is but is is about 20MB. I have paused the DL by turning off WiFi, but every time I enable WiFi it starts up again.
So how can I prevent it from updating?

You can deny the install once it downloads also btw

I may need to let it finish, I only see check for updates and continue update now.
EDIT: it is 27.21MB

DL finished, was able to say no to install but still cannot set it to not update, got perma-nag to apply.

There is another very important place which ALSO should be disabled:
Setings -> General -> Security -> Auto Update Security

Thanks, I got that one, repped.

Just an update...
All day yesterday I was nagged about the new update I downloaded was ready to be installed. Only options were "okay" or "remind me later", I kept saying later.
This morning I got up and saw a "the update has successfully been applied". Grrrrr. I like smartphones but not ones that think they are smarter than their owner.
Also, now that it applied, I went to disable future updates (General > Settings > About Device > Software update) and the option is not there. Maybe that is one feature of the new update...to prevent the prevention of future updates.

I have an un-rooted N900A (Note 3 AT&T) on 4.4.4 and it just updated without my permission. When I go to Settings > General > About Device > Software Updates, all I see is "Check for updates" and "Continue update" (which is greyed out). They must've removed the option to disable automatic updates.
I was on 4.4.2 since I bought my phone several months ago, then it started prompting me for the 4.4.4 update which I didn't want to do because I was waiting to root it. The confirmation popped up in the middle of me texting one day and I accidentally confirmed the update. This morning I got a notification about a new update and then three hours later it just went ahead and updated it automatically without asking me to confirm.
I HATE AT&T!! How do I disable updates on an un-rooted phone?

[Q] [How to] Disable OTA Updates for Galaxy Note 4?

My Note 4 SM-N910G is already successfully rooted...Am wondering how I can disable the OTA updates. Read for earlier Galaxy models that the trick is to freeze SDM.apk using Titanium Backup, but I couldn't find the SDM.apk, even using ES File Explorer it wasn't in >system>app folder.
Anyone knows if it's under a different file name in Note 4 or alternative methods?

I still received the notification that a new firmware was available and downloaded, not sure if it was before I rooted or after. Can you confirm that?
I thought you can disable it by going to settings - about device- software update- uncheck automatic software update

Must say I didn't think about this option at all, so simple & without even rooting. Thanks so much!

That's great! Since we can't ota after root, really no point receiving update notifications. Thanks for confirming that!
My pleasure
Before I rooted, I got a notification that update software has been downloaded, asking me to install the update.
I've gone into "System Update" and unchecked the options for updates, however the update notification persists. On my Galaxy S4, when I would long press on the notification, it would display "app info" button, when I pressed that I'd see the option to uncheck notifications.
I still see that same app info but the option to "Force Stop", "Turn Off" or uncheck "Show Notifications" is ghosted out, not allowing me to uncheck notifications.
Any suggestions for a fix to prevent accidentally updating?

Disabling System updates on the Verizon LG V20?

I'm hoping to prevent my phone from taking updates in case a root exploit is found (but then quickly patched by VZ). I've disabled updates in the developer options (Settings/About Phone/Software Info/Build Number - click 7 times to enable developer options menu / developer options menu / Automatic system updates set to off).
I did that the other day and that was after taking the first "performance" OTA which had already downloaded/installed.
I figured that would do the trick however and hour ago I had my phone sitting on my desk connected to my PC via USB and when I picked it up there was a note saying something about my phone had been updated(?). Maybe it was just a notification I hadn't gotten from the first one somehow popping late but I'm kinda confused.. And this was a message about a system update (I should have screenshotted it or read it more my first thought was **** did I not toggle that developer option correctly....but I had). It was the message saying you may want to reboot as it may have drained the battery on your phone.
I'm on Software: VS99511A
Config: B16.LGE.VS995.0
Build NRD90M
Kernel [email protected]
I noticed in Application manager if I show system I can see 2 "System Updates" and I'm guess those are what kicked on and did something while I wasn't paying attention. Can those be disabled? One of them has an advanced permission for "Modify system settings" which I toggled to "no" cause I figured at worst that would just cause an error. The other I can only force stop and then disable but when I attempt to do that it warns me that doing so would hide it and I'm afraid I might not be able to relocate it/re-enable it (w/o a factory reset?) and that could be a serious problem
How is everyone else in the "hoping root come relatively soon" boat handling updates?
Thanks for any discussion/suggestions....

In developer options there is disable automatic system updates. I like that feature.
Edit: sorry. I reread and saw you saw that. I had recently found that.
I'm still on 10b I disabled in the dev section and I get the constant you need to update but hasn't done it auto thankfully

Any idea how to get past a at&t v20 that has updates already trying to install? Flash a new ROM or maybe a factory reset? BTW its already rooted but I forgot to disable the OTA updates. Thanks. EDIT: Nevermind. Just did a wipe on dalvik and cache, which took care of the problem.
Freezing System updates 1_15_10_0 and System updates 1_16_02_0 using Titanium Backup (this requires root), will stop those messages. It was nearly the same set of processes for the V10.
I've also seen a recommendation to freeze FOTA Update 7.0, and a method using the phone's hidden menu.
I'm not addressing rootless options since this message was posted a month and half before me2151's DirtySanta bootloader and root guide was released, that's no longer an issue.
I'm on 10m and recently rooted. I cannot find 1_15_10_0...I found the other file and successfully froze it. I've also frozen the FOTA Update. I tried accessing the hidden menu, but I get an error message. On 10m, is there a 1_15_10_0?
EDIT: Sorry for digging such a long-dead thread. Didn't see the more recent one that's also active.
Hey guys I know this is OT but is it true that the v20 from Verizon is unlocked and can work with any other sim?

Marshmallow 6.0 OTA update files + how to disable update message

I am reposting the links here as they are a bit lost in the middle of the Marshmallow thread. These are useful if the Yota Devices server is slow or if you want to hack around.
OTA (can be installed with TWRP) update Marshmallow EU1.1.47mx from Lollipop EU 1.1.124b

If you encounter the "system update" message coming back all the time after update, you can try this if you have rooted your phone:
Connect using "adb shell" or use a terminal on your phone like ConnectBot and type:
Code:
su
pm clear com.symphonyteleca.update
pm disable com.symphonyteleca.update
pm clear com.symphonyteleca.updateservice
pm disable com.symphonyteleca.updateservice
If you don't have root, use NoRoot Firewall to block system updates (Android System). You will also need to disable data and wifi (or enable airplane mode) before shutting down your phone, and re-enable them after startup when NoRoot firewall is active, as the system updates can make a request BEFORE NoRoot Firewall is enabled on system startup. See https://forum.xda-developers.com/yo...ng-update-message-upgrading-to-t3652774/page3
why the mx at the end of the filename?
No idea, it's just the name provided by the Yota server.

I've saw an specific post on Yota Facebook page about this subject, and people sent his IMEIs to stops the update message to apear in his phones.
Doesn't work for me
Just FYI, upgrading from 5.0.0 - EU1.1.124b didn't work for me. The OTA upload repeatedly failed half way through and the TWRP package using the method suggested here also hung on the 'Android' screen. Only way to recover it was to reflash back to 5.0.0 again - three attempts, none worked.
Bit of a shame, have sent my IMEI to Russia in the hope that they can turn off the upgrade messages and I'll have to stick with verson 5.0.0..... R.I.P. Yotaphone

I had problems installing 6.0 too and after some time the constant every day update notification became real pain in the.. Luckily I had my phone rooted and Titanium backup could freeze the update processes (don't remember which ones, look for something system-like with "update" in its name).
PS. To get the Marshmallow I had to use the unofficial Lineage rom (https://forum.xda-developers.com/yotaphone-one/development/lineageos-tested-kindoff-t3640851) - works quite well but lack the EPD support so be sure you leave there some nice wallpaper before switching.
Hi, first of all, thanks for sharing the files.
It helped me a lot to update my gf phone from Ru to Eu as i updated it from lollipop to marshmallow by flashing the Ru build some time ago.
As she was pissed off by some yota apps in russian, i flashed your build so that she get's back Eu (french).
But there's a strange thing, Yotasports seems to have disappeared, and she can't install it through playstore, says device not compatible, so if anyone has the apk from an EU build (even lollipop maybe ?) i'd be very grateful, thanks !

Unlimited Hotspot after Cre1+ update

If your having issues
Please note that cre1 update will unpatch the hotspot after few minutes of using. You will have to downgrade to Crd7 (Odin) for this patch to work and ignore the update.
Dont update past Crd7
Odin: Download
Crd7: Download
How to downgrade:
Put phone in download mode (Volume down+Power+Bixby on boot)
Flash odin files after connect
Reboot into recovery (Volume up+Power+Bixby)
(Navigate with volume keys, select option with power)
Wipe data + cache
Reboot
Ignore system updates
Steps for hotspot:

Click yes
Let it do its thing
Open shortcutmaster
Click menu
Click app explorer
Find com.test.lte*****
Click ltefunctionitytest & Launch
Click Lte apn setting
Under apn type ADD DUN
Should look like
default,mms,dun
Click menu in top right corner save
Now I did this with both
Ehrpd & lte
Reboot
Done
Do not update profile in settings/system updates
If you do just redo the hotspot patch
Prl is fine to update
Uncheck updates automatically
Unlock developer options
(Multiple taps on build number in settings/about/software information)
Go into developer options and uncheck auto update system
This should help with how frequently you see the system updates.

I have had no problems keeping the hotspot setting on CRE1. As long as you do not update your PRL your settings should stick. I have been using this hotspot trick since it was first introduced. If you update your PRL you will need to follow the steps again.
Uh yeah my Hotspot works great(cre1) but as already said try not to update the prl or you will have to start over..
EDIT:CRG7 JULY all is well
Finally received the latest N950USQU5CRG7 update. Updated and the hotspot setting is still in place. :good:
Same for me. Still working on CRE1. Anyone get the update from the 13th? I'm not gonna take it until I know I'll have hotspot.
I took the update, hotspot still working for me.

My phone got the newest oreo update a few days ago and I noticed my profile updated itself tonight. I attempted to open the apn settings with shortcut master lite but everything was greyed out and unable to edit anything. I followed your instructions starting with the dialer (##27263#) to reset the provisioning parameters. I clicked on yes and let the phone do its thing. Once rebooted the apn settings were available to edit again in SML and all is working again. I didn't need to downgrade to crd7, install odin files or wipe cache. Thanks for your help and hope this post helps someone.
Yep, that's what I had to do after it did the Update Profile/PRL on its own.
Thanks, apparently it work, will be testing it for awhile.
I know that my Prl has updated on its own sometimes and i've had to use the 'BRAND' to reset the apn to put "DUN", but rn i'm CRG7, I used bk package disabler to disable 'sprint omadm' so my prl wont automatically update. Its worked since and hasnt reset.
Just updated to CRG9 (August 1 security update). Mod is still in place.
Same...
yeah BRAND seems to work all the way up to the latest update
Has anyone confirmed this to be working after the 53.68 mb patch?
53.68 mb patch?
It's working with the latest update for SM-N950U 184.83 mb patch.
Current Version: N950USQS5CRG9
Security patch level: August 1, 2018
Still working on September 1st patch CRI4.
Sept 1 patch is out
I have it on my phone
but waiting for one of you guys to update first and tell me if Hotspot still works
I can't risk losing my hotspot.....thanks guys

still works

Block 8.0??

Is there anyway to block the notification for the 8.0 update? It pops up randomly when I turn it on and I'd rather not have to deal with downgrading because someone in the house accidentally selected upgrade.
I have updates disabled in the developer options but I'm still prompted to start the update.

I do indeed. What are my options?
I froze the update service using Titanium Backup but any application that allows you to disable or freeze a service will do it. You could also use something like AfWall+ to stop the service having online visibility so it wouldn't know there is an update.
