Android system drain is killing me - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I see people getting up to 6h of screen time, I can barely get 3,3.5h. Android system is constantly my biggest drainer.
I'm rooted, I disabled all bloatware I can think of. I'm still new to the phone and I don't know what else to disable. I even disabled Google Now completely.
GPS off ,WiFi on, 3g signal is good, auto sync is on. I lose about 10% over night while doing nothing.
Any ideas?
This is on very light usage, about 45min of screen time, some texting and calls only.

I have titanium backup so I'll disable Google backup completely.
About location services, should I disable it for Google apps only(under Google settings) or system wide via settings> location access?
Sent from my LG-D802 using Tapatalk

Do the following one by one and observe your battery life after each try
1. Disable Google backup
2. Disable Google Location Access
3. Disable Android Location Access (the one with gps and mobile network)
4. Disable knock on/off sensor

You disabled google backup or LG Backup?
The problem is LG backup,
Just from setting is enough

I've now disabled Google backup and location access and in the 30 mins I'm on battery, Android system is still the biggest drainer.
I'm gonna try disabling knock on now.

In data settings are you on global or something else? global will use more so you may see people getting better results but if the are on 3g/lte for example, the phone isn't constantly searching for the global connection.

I'm not on international but 3g/lte

Went to sleep with 100%, woke up with 89%. I installed wakelock detector and it seems Swype was keeping my phone awake for 3h. I uninstalled it and will see if that fixes the issue.
I just don't understand why android system was registered as the main culprit in both Gsam and BBS.

Keyboard. Swype has had this issue since forever ago on the G2. All its network bs, voice crap, ect. Figured they would of fixed it by now. I've been happy with stock LG keyboard.

It seems the only thing which gets down the Android system drain is number 4,disabling knock on. But I like that feature. :-/

Weird, isn't it?
Now, it's your choice to enable or disable it but at least, you know the culprit.

I don't get why it's displaying as gravity sensor. The Doubletap uses the touchscreen, nothing to do with accelerometer / rotation / tilt. I still say it's a software bug... this has been reported numerous times, still baffles me, never see it.

Here is another thread about this problem

Simple. Turn KnockOn off and Android system will never again go that high. The touch screen drains power when idling waiting for you to knock on

There will be no fix. How could you fix touch screen to not drain power if waiting for knock on? How? It's physics and you can't fix physics

That may very well be, but it's not logical that such a simple feature uses more power than the screen itself.

the screen works, like, 3-5 hrs. And touch screen is 10-20 hrs constantly drains. Even if touch consumes way less current it does it long period of time hence power drainage.
So if your G2 primarily lays in pocket and you don't wake it up every hour or half an hours simply turn knockon off and use power key as I do and be happy
What is more powerconsuming is NLP in 4.4 kitkat which you can't turn off at all and THAT is the power drain which IS REAAAALLY BAAAAAAAAAD. I hate Google, the NSA beach

For those with terrible battery life:
Mobile data connection seems to drain on this rom very quickly. I disable mobile data manually or you can download green Power app and it'll take care of it for you.
From my experience, the rom considers whatever battery power you had when you flashed the rom as full. Force charge your battery. What I mean by this is plug your phone, power off, remove battery, wait for question mark, then reinsert battery. Let's say your phone had 50% battery left before you shut it down, the phone should charge another 50 right? Well if it is not in sync with the rom it will charge and additional percentage above the 50% you had left. What I do is continue charging until the percentage ceases to increase. One time I had 50 % left, but when I did a force charge it charged to like 72%!
Once the percentage stops increasing, remove battery, then wait for the question mark to show, the phone will say "where's my battery". Unplug phone, reinstall battery then plug it in. It should display 100%. Turn on your phone.
Sorry for any gramatical errors, wrote this information a hurry. Should I make a new thread with these instructions?

Hope it helps. Perform this one time. No need to go though these steps every time you charge your phone. Subsequent charges that result in 92% to 100% max displayed power is acceptable on this device because of an unknown problem.

Some more tips:
Disable Google Now if you do not need it.
Disable Google Backup service.
Disable fast dormancy apk.
Set wifi to sleep when screen is off.
Turn off mobile data if you are in a no 3G coverage area.
Playing high graphics games kill your battery fast.
Google Navigation can be used with screen off to save power.
Turn off gps when not in use.
Turn off wifi radio when not in use.
Turn off bluetooth when not needed.
I have a feeling undervolting and downclocking makes your phone unstable. I have no proof though.
I recommend you do not run any scripts like nitrocharger or supercharger. Again, based on experience.
To avoid the dreaded media scan drainage, try not to reboot unnecessarily. A lot of power is wasted during power up.
I do not use auto brightness in cm10. I turn on the option to slide your finger across the status bar and adjust as needed. I will re enable once levels are more consistent.
I believe the hotter the phone gets, the more power it will drain. Give it a break and let it cool down.
Don't swipe away previously used apps. Do this if you know those apps are battery hogs.
* These are MY recommendations. This is all based on experience. I will continue to add to this list based on feedback and/or experiences.
Here are some tests I performed:

Here are my results on Epinter 0813. Google Now, Google Search location detection, Google Maps frozen, Google location services OFF.
Battery exceeds CM7 efficiency.
*Notice 6 hours of usage. I consider this VERY good. I was only getting less than 3 hours in the early days of this ROM.
And some more:
Soldier-2Point0 said:
And the results are in! This is usage similar to what I posted above except I had Google location services, Google Search location detection ON, but I had Google Now OFF. For this test I also defrosted Google Maps. I did not reboot the system this time.
Overall
Usage
Screen on
Running apps showing up time
Far better than the previous test and also left CM7 in the dust. Google Maps, location services did not have an effect on battery life compared to the previous test.
The final test will be with this same setup but with Google Now enabled. I will wait a couple of days to perform this test because I have a busy week ahead of me.

Surface dithering option states that it improves the quality of images. I rather have it off to avoid having yet another process running in the background. Turn off animations in developers options within settings.
I got some new results. Running epinter's ROM v25b. App usage was BakaReader, Apollo, a bit of Dolphin and xda app.
Settings:
- No underclocking
- All HW accleleration/zram/surface dithering/ settings off
- Some apps restored with TiBu, but not on this version (been just flashing this over older releases, no caches deleted between flashes)
- CPU Sleeper app running

If you can't find the source of the drain try a factory reset.
We went through so many threads like that, my man.
Do a search.
For the headup, assuming that you have already turned off Android location access, turned off Google location access, turned off auto-sync (I know you said you needed it but just for now, off it), turned off gps/mobile networks, do the following
a. disable Knock On/Off feature
b. disable CIQ (if you don't have CIQ, then ignore this step)
Note: do one by one and make an observation how the battery life behaves after each change.
Oh, btw, reboot the phone, say, right after unplugging the charge.

OP if you feel thats not right, flash another rom see if it help, I'm using energy rom, its good for me so far.
Try remove some bloat and apk with titanium... A regular user can often remove 100 apk from these roms! And use bootmanager and greenify! Greenify is must have!

Don't hope, fix now.
If I was you, I would backup all my important personal info on the phone and factory reset it.
I would do those tricks one by one w/o installing any app yet and see how the battery fares after each charge.
General speaking, we need to understand the root cause and find the solution from there, if it needs to be rooted to fix the problem then you root it otherwise, blindly rooting and assuming everything else will fix isn't the right way to debug.

Without root there's pretty much nothing you can do. You'd need root to use BetterBatteryStats, which will pinpoint what's keeping the phone awake.

it looks like it has something to do with missing blue tooth binaries inside of kernel, so not much of uninstalling apps left to do... the only app i can uninstall to get rid of wakelock is android wear, but then i'll loose sync to smart watch and that something I'm not ready to do just yet...

Good luck in getting the battery drain issue sorted!
As a side note while I don't have an Android Wear watch for a direct comparison, I do have a Pebble Time which is constantly connected via Bluetooth and it doesn't appear to be suffering from the same issue. Not directly relevant, but worth mentioning.

I do believe it's useful as well) Pebble Time watch doesn't use blue tooth same as Android Wear does, it's more like my UP2 and that's why you're not suffering from same issue...
I don't have wearable device. I only pair the phone with my car. But Bluetooth wakelock is almost always on. Wtf...
Bluetooth keeps my phone awake all the time also since the 6.0.1 update. This is when it's not connected to my car even. If I turn it off the phone will enter Doze mode just fine and it works as it should.

You need to turn bluetooth off when not using it. Do you by any chance use GasBuddy?
I don't use gas buddy. I never turned bluetooth off on 6.0 and never had this battery drain and the phone would go into doze mode fine. For now I do have it off. Hopefully they fix it in the next update.

as soon as I uninstall Weatherbug app off, my phone was able to enter deep sleep cycle and eventually doze off) I emailed to Weatherbug team, but it seems like they dropped the ball on Android app( I wrote to them earlier in regards to yet another bug a while back, yet they still haven't resolved it yet... honestly I don't even understand why Weatherbug needs to have "phone permissions" at the first place, it's not like it makes phone call or utilizes bluetooth anyhow...
anyways, it's pretty clear what needs to happen / only one thing left to do... UNINSTALL!!! oh and change my rating in PlayStore... maybe then they'll do something...

Google Play Services stay awake battery drain

It seems that Google Play Services is keeping my phone awake for many more hours than the screen is on and this seems to be consuming a lot of battery. Had anyone else noticed this and fixed it?
I lost 45% battery in 9 hours with 1 hour of screen time and the phone held awake for 6 hours. Gsam says I lost 3.25% per hour while the screen was off. And that's with the phone turned over so no always on display active either.
It never used to be like this. I'd usually come home from work with like 75% left at least.

Yesterday happened to me, but I assumed it was merely a lot of updating apps.Today I had no issue at all. So I guess that was it.
Same here. Cleared the cache. Works fine so far. #fingercross
I'm also having the same issue. It consumes a lot of internet data in the background..Do not know what to do
Use Google Service Block and no problems
More weirdness today... Phone held awake for almost 8 hours despite screen off and it sitting motionless on the nightstand while I slept.

Google Play-Services 9.2.56
If you don't have GPS 9.2.56 yet, you can download/install manually:
Google Play service Version: 9.2.56 (440-124593566) (9256440)
arm + arm64
Hi, DISABLE ALL options in GOOGLE MENU /UNDER SECURITY / SCAN APPS...
With this options disabled I have only 7 % battery consumption in google services (gsam monitor).

Is that the newest version of GPS? Is there included battery drain fix?

I have had the same issue. I reset my phone. Its been 4 days now, and im not facing the play services battery drain anymore
Actually, I found a possible solution. It seems that it is the smart manager that keeps google play services awake by some reasons. Try to turn it off, everything goes right after that in my case.

WIFI uptime 100% while it's turned off - battery drain

Hey,
I'm having issues with my nexus 6p phone where it seems to have some battery drain issues, when i'm checking the battery history the wifi uptime is 100% while it's actually turned off.
What i have tried:
Verifying wifi advanced options - turned everything off and changed freq to 2.4.
Location advanced options - turned everything off.
Looked in the xda forums , found a thread with the above solutions.
It's pretty annoying, my phone is updated to last version(this months update).
Have anyone else faced this issue as-well and solved it somehow?
Thanks in advance.

If you could, please provide some actual battery stats. What is your screen on time? What is the actual battery life? Screenshots please.
Battery drain on Nexus 6P
Hello,
I am experiencing the same issue. I tried few ROMs and Kernels, but since a month and something ago my Nexus 6P is having some serious battery drain issues. Before I managed to get over 5 hours SOT before, but then the battery drains began and now I manage to get only 3 hours and a few minutes at the best.... I turned off all of the potential settings that can affect battery life (scanning and location included) but it didn't help. It seems to me that my phone does not want to Doze (you can see it when you look at last screenshot)...
I am attaching screenshots from BetterBatteryStats (while using stock ROM and Kernel), and another screenshot from Settings->Battery while using ParanoidAndroid build.

I had the same issue for a while, but it has recently stopped. The WiFi usage bar is now empty. I haven't noticed any particular change in battery life whether it shows it or not so I would say it's nothing to worry about.
I've seen reports of this glitch from back when L was released. So it's probably no more than a glitch.

I remember that glitch and I was wondering about that.
I'm on WiFi almost constantly anyway so I can't confirm.

Do you think it's a glitch? Can you please take a look at screenshots provided above by me and confirm it is a glitch or something else? Be it a glitch or not, something is still draining my battery very badly.
Thank you.

Personally, I wouldn't use the Facebook app. It's a huge resource hog. I use the mobile site. The bug discussed didn't actually cause battery drain though, it only showed on the graph as always on. You are most likely getting the drain from elsewhere. Try uninstalling Facebook and give it a 24 hour cycle. See if your results are better.
Also, I always recommend backing up and wiping internal storage once and a while. That can clear up a ton of issues.

If you have Viber, go to General settings and tick "use device's settings" and check if the problem goes away.

The same here.
Anybody that may have another solution?
P.S.: It seems to me that my Nexus 6P does not go into Doze Mode.
