Replace system apps in roms - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a way to replace system apps in roms ?
I've tried to replace email and browser to test , but it seems extraxting the rom , replacing the apps and then zip back to rom using 7zip doesn't work.

Probably has something to do with the roms programming. Better to delete/freeze via titanium backup then try and use root Explorer to replace lkke if you're talking about stock email or pre-installed Gmail then it's the best way.

Modding a rom?

Im currently using evils z rom and I like it but id like to remove some apps that are preinstalled. What's the best n easiest way of going about this and also is it possible to swapout lockscreens... I really like the sliding side tabs lock screen but hate using widgetlocker...

easiest ways are Root Explorer (pay app in the Market) or if you don't want an to do it on the phone or buy the app you can do the same thing by using winzip or 7zip to unzip the ROM on your computer remove the apps you don't want, rezip and flash. to get the slide lock like the ones in CM6/7 or AOSP you just need to delete/remove HTCLockscreen.apk in the apps folder.
EDIT: I use the second method before flashing any ROM to add the ringtones I want to the ROM so I don't have to use Root Explorer and have remember to fix permissions.

Can Liberty 1.5 run Backup Assistant?

Okay, I know some people think it's redundant to Have backups of my contacts in both Google AND Verizon Backup Assistant, but I'm OCD and like having backups of everything. Also, at some point in time in the future I may not have an Android phone (God forbid) and I would need Verizon Backup Assistant to port all my contacts over to my new phone. Anyway, I'm running Liberty 1.5 which doesn't have BA. I have a folder on my SD card where I've saved all the stock Droid X apps, so I went there and copied both the apk and odex files to system/app and I changed the permissions to rw-r-r. Then I rebooted hoping that it would work, but it didn't. I did a bit of Google searching and found out that BA needs additional Blur components to run. Obviously I have those too, but I don't know which Blur components I need to install to make BA run. Does anyone know the Blur files I need to install in order for Liberty 1.5 to run Backup Assistant? Thanks in advance!
i believe its buacontactadapter.apk
I tried copying the apk and odex for that just now in addition to the backup assistant apk and odex (and I still changed the permissions to rw-r-r). It still didn't work. Do you think there are more files I need to copy? Or is blur stuff just NOT compatible with Liberty 1.5?

It is designed to be blurless. However, if you keep installing files you may get it to work. Also, when you are in /system/app mount it as rw and install the app. You may have to do that as well
So you're saying I need to just keep randomly installing blur files and hope for the best? I'd rather not. I'm hoping someone knows exactly what files to install. Anyone?

Transferring Nandroid Backups

I have a problem. I deleted a few apps that i can't seem to install or get back, even if i download the apks and such. So i was wondering, if someone provided me with their stock nandroid backup, would it work on my Evo? I tried flashing a stock ROM but it didnt work, with the files i needed still missing, and I'm desperate to just have a completely stock nandroid backup. Anyone have any idea about this?
You can't (or really shouldn't) use a nandroid from a different phone. Why didn't a flash of a stock rom work? What apps are you trying to install?
We're comin from a pure power source.
So you can't take the apk files and use ES file manager and set it to root priv and mount permissions and install the apks that way from your sd card.
You can restore nandroids from other phones but not recommended. I did it from my old phone to my new one.
To make it work.
1. Make nand of your phone
2. Make nand on phone you want to use
3. Copy nand files over the top of the nand made on your phone.
4. Restore nand on your phone with modified files.
make sure you don't backup wimax on the source phone.
I can't install Facebook for sense and HTC peep

Wouldn't it be much faster to flash a new rom and start over? If not faster def. safer, less chance of screwing up Wimax
I've tried flashing stock rom and fresh rom, both times these apps didn't show up, and when I try to install just the apk, it just says "application not installed "

I used to move my backups between Hero phones with no issues

Click to collapse
Your hero didn't have wimax now did it..........

You can easily delete wimax.img and remove its line from nandroid.md5 and you should be fine. As long as that img is gone, your wimax will be safe.
Find a copy of root explorer... using that, copy the apks that you want to your system>app folder ( your system will have to be mounted rewritable) once the apks are in place, change their permissions to resemble other apks in the folder... once you do that, reboot your phone
Use Amon RA recovery and uncheck wimax

[Q] (Q) Deleting stock apps

I have the superuser icon on the phone after i rooted a while back and could never figure out how to take stock apps that serve no purpose on my phone off. Just do not know the process on how to do it. Any help would be great!
Use a file exporter with root access (my personal favorite is Root Browser included in ROM Toolbox.) Navigate to System/Apps and delete the apk and odex files of the apps you don't need. I think there are root uninstallers that do the same thing but I'm not sure. I almost always use a custom ROM such as Cyanogenmod that doesn't ever have s lot of bloatware pre installed.

Here is a list that I use to freeze/delete apps when I run a stock ROM.

Deleting preinstalled apps

I have a rooted motorola defy mini with stock gingerbread 2.3.6. Can I delete apps in the flex/app directory without corrupting android? Also, I deleted some stock apps and replaced them with downloaded apps. If I place them in the system/app directory will they be installed on the phone when I do a factory reset?

So I tried deleting a few apks and it didn't affect android in any way. I deleted all files containing moto or blur in the name and the phone is still working like it's supposed to. I also placed the launcher pro apk in the system/app directory and it was installed when I did a factory reset, so that also works for anyone who would like to do something like this
