I have a problem. I deleted a few apps that i can't seem to install or get back, even if i download the apks and such. So i was wondering, if someone provided me with their stock nandroid backup, would it work on my Evo? I tried flashing a stock ROM but it didnt work, with the files i needed still missing, and I'm desperate to just have a completely stock nandroid backup. Anyone have any idea about this?
You can't (or really shouldn't) use a nandroid from a different phone. Why didn't a flash of a stock rom work? What apps are you trying to install?
We're comin from a pure power source.
So you can't take the apk files and use ES file manager and set it to root priv and mount permissions and install the apks that way from your sd card.
You can restore nandroids from other phones but not recommended. I did it from my old phone to my new one.
To make it work.
1. Make nand of your phone
2. Make nand on phone you want to use
3. Copy nand files over the top of the nand made on your phone.
4. Restore nand on your phone with modified files.
make sure you don't backup wimax on the source phone.
I can't install Facebook for sense and HTC peep

Wouldn't it be much faster to flash a new rom and start over? If not faster def. safer, less chance of screwing up Wimax
I've tried flashing stock rom and fresh rom, both times these apps didn't show up, and when I try to install just the apk, it just says "application not installed "

You can easily delete wimax.img and remove its line from nandroid.md5 and you should be fine. As long as that img is gone, your wimax will be safe.
Find a copy of root explorer... using that, copy the apks that you want to your system>app folder ( your system will have to be mounted rewritable) once the apks are in place, change their permissions to resemble other apks in the folder... once you do that, reboot your phone
Use Amon RA recovery and uncheck wimax

I have a friend over on the east coast that isnt following direction as well as one would hope and is a little scared about rooting his phone and getting it to be as good as my X is. I finally got it rooted for him but he is freaking out about using a clean nandroid backup i sent him and dumping it in the correct directory for nandroid backup and restore giving him a clean image of my phone...
I had assumed that this would have been the easiest method but it got me thinking.
Could i rename my nandroid back up folder the ending tree folder that holds the .android_secure.img, cache.img, data.img, nandroid.md5 and system.img ... like clockworkmod/backup/2010-11-25.05.05.13 could i just pop all those files into a .zip named whatever and direct him to clockwork recovery and flash zip from sd card?
Or could someone point me into a direction on how to accomplish that? I think i would like to also do it for my self and upload it to my dropbox account for later access or to share with friends.
I noticed when i opened like the latest rubix rom that it didnt contain any files similar to that so im curious if its possible.
Also one last question, while i have your technicle mind at attention..
Could someone answer me, in Titanium backup it gives you the option to create a update.zip, then it gives you two radio buttons one says titanium backup will be installed as user application and then System application.
I know that the whole create update.zip thing is for flashing it to the rom from recovery. But what is the diffrence bewteen those two options. What is best and what is the diffrence..
Thanks for letting me pick your Brains!
One drawback of giving him your nandroid backup is that it contains YOUR gmail account with your contacts, facebook account (if applicable), among all other sorts of your personal stuff. In my past experience, you can ADD a gmail account to the phone, but you cannot get rid of the primary/original account so he will have both on there. Other than that, it actually does work though (at least it did on the Droid 1).
Wipe your data and make a nandroid before you reboot and sign in. that way your accounts won't be tied to it

Your friend - with all due respect if he's having that much trouble with something this simple I really don't think he should be screwing around with root access in the first place. If he has that little understanding of administrator-level access, why on earth does he even want root? He won't even know what to do with it.
Not trying to be harsh, just trying to understand.
Flash Nandroid - NO, don't do it! I'm sure it can be done, but not in the way you described.
Titanium Backup - system apps reside in /system/app as opposed to /data/app. The only real difference is that system apps will still be there after you do a factory reset.
If your going to let your friend flash a nandroid, then you need to remove your gmail and social applications. If you wipe data as mentioned above you'll lose all non-system apps...basically everything you've installed and set up, which is most likely what you're trying to give him. The only way I can think to make this work is to first create a backup for your use, then remove everything that requires you to log in with adb, then replace all of the apps you removed (extract the rom your running and look in system/app for them - data/app apps can be installed from the market). Reboot the phone to verify that all of your accounts are gone, create the new backup and send it to him. Then flash the backup you made for your use.
The easiest way to give him "your set up" would probably be to make a full backup with titanium (not an update.zip). Backup all user apps and system data. Go into the titanium folder on your sd card and delete all files except the .apk files that have anything to do with gmail or social apps. Have him flash the same rom, copy your titanium file to his sd card, and restore all apps and system data to his phone.

Can someone please tell me what folder clockworkmod stores the backup's in? I formatted my sdcard on accident with a rom that was not booting.
I have copied backup's stored on my computer but when i put in on the sdcard and go into restore, clockwork does not see it. I thought is was in a folder called "backup" on the sdcard, but that does not seem to work.
clockworkmod/backup/

Also you want to make sure to use the correct recovery CWM 2.x or 3.x.
CWM2 ex. BCDMRS-date-...
CWM3 ex. Date-...
The times are in military/24 hour format.
My cousin ran in to issues mixing recov's & backup's. I suspect it was more than just that. However I haven't tried when its pretty painless to switch between the two.

Not quite sure what your saying here. So you know, you can name the backups whatever you want, like "3/26gb.firerat.4_20" and you can restore backups between cwm2 and 3.

Every time i rename them the backups always fail. I had to stop naming them. It would just say md5 sum failed or something like that. I got screwed over twice that way so if you do rename just be cautious.

FYI the key is not putting spaces in there. I have renamed EVERY backup I have ever made (using ANY recovery) so I could tell them apart. I never use anything but numbers, letters, periods, and underscores. I currently have 6 on my sd in /clockworkmod/backup/ named:
gb326.perfection.norat
gb326.perfection.rat
gb326.perfection.rat_ap5
gb421.perfection.rat
gb421.perfection.rat_ap5
nfx.prl01115.pri2.20
I have restored each one of these (I always restore them to make sure they work).
I've searched a dozen different ways to try to read up on this but can't find a thread, I don't want to make a custom rom just copy mine as setup to another epic. If this is easily found could someone just point out the correct search terms. I thought to put this in development but the question seemed to general.

About the only way I could think of doing so would be to go into your clockworkmod folder and copy the backup you have there and move that to the same folder of the other phone and try restoring that. Not sure if it would work being the google accounts/contacts and whatever else.
Just make a nandroid backup. Take the sd card out of the original epic, root your new epic using one click 3.0.0.6, boot into clockwork And then click on backup and restore and restore the nandroid backup you made. Not sure if it'll work, but I would assume it would.
It should work, you may hit an MD5 mismatch and you'd have to copy the MD5 file from a backup on the new phone to the old backup but it will probably be fine.
And make sure you flash a kernel that is ext4 compatable!

Thanks for the reply's, I did try to take the backup folders (3 in all) and copy them to the new phone, but I did get an md5 mismatch. I need to do this for 30+ company phones so I'm looking for the easiest way to get all the apps and layouts we want to each phone.
Lol, I think you better start changing MD5 instead of posting. Thats a lot of phones!!
Do a nandroid backup and backup everything using my backup root and wipe then put sd in new epic flash cwm3 let it convert to ext4 if that's what you were on otherwise use cwm2.5 and restore the system from cwm only boot up into system go to market log in download my backup root and restore all with that. If it can't find ur backup it sometimes makes an "SD" folder on the sd card itself
Edit: if md5 is mismatched just use any rom zip like srf or bonsai as the system backup is basically just a rom the mybackuproot holds all the app data and phone data

If You have installed Clockwork recovery.
Then u can backup ur entire rom.
For this boot into recovery then go to Backup and restore and select back up.
after completing all procedure reboot ur device.
Connect your device in PC through USB (Storage)
Go to clockworkmod folder\backup
u can see the file with the date name....copy it to ur PC folder and you r done.
Press help if I helped you....
Ok ihave cwd.Just if later something go wrong,i must install cwd again copy cotest of backup folder and restore? What this chieftec 450w backup?complate rom,os,settings?Example if i have another rom can i with this metod restore to this rom what i backuo it?
a nandroid back up takes an exact image of the whole phone. system, data, apps, contacts, everything. its then placed in the clockworkmod folder on the sd card.
when you restore the backup it will bring the phone back to the exact state it was in when you did the back up.
and as far as i know you cant just select parts of it. its all or none. also i think if you rename it it might mess up the m5d sum but dont quote me on it
I did it from boot menu.Turn on + volume down backup and restore, backup and thet is it,i just go to look where is file and save to my PC.
I use rom manager to rename the backups, and never had a problem.
Also you can extract things from nandroids, apps, data, sms settings etc with an app called app extractor, it's in the market and there's a thread on xda for it somewhere.

I have been reading about how people (including myself) are having issues mounting the SD card with CWM Recovery 6.x.xx and I was wondering where (if it exists) I can find an earlier version for my Nexus 4. The problem I am having is when my phone is connected to my computer, I cant find the Clockwork Mod file to remove the backup from the device. I have the 8GB N4, so I really want to remove it, put it somewhere safe and not have it take up precious space.
If anyone has any thoughts or other solutions, please let me know. I am also having the same issue with TWRP2 (cant mount while in recovery).

I have Root Explorer and can't find the folder on my /sdcard. If I could, I could take the backup and move it, but it doesn't seem to be visible.
I have been thinking, do I need to be rooted to be able to access the folder, or see it for that matter?
And as a side note, I tried TWRP2 and I can see the folder with backups made.

I had this same issue as I'm using CWM 6.0.2.0. For whatever reason, they changed the saved backups location to /data/media/clockworkmod now so you can't access it by plugging in your phone because the backups aren't on the sdcard. That's also the reason you can't find it. To my knowledge, you can do two things to get them to your computer:
1. Use ADB to pull the clockworkmod folder to your computer. I still haven't completely figured out how to do that yet as I don't screw around in ADB shell too much and I'm not sure if you have to mount the filesystem before doing it. I'm sure if you search around, you could find the ADB solution.
2. (This solution sucks but it works...) If you have a file manager (like X-plore) and root access, you can copy the contents of /data/media/clockworkmod folder to the sdcard location on your phone. Once it's there, THEN you can access that copy when it's plugged into your computer. Then just get rid of the .nomedia file in the folder and move it from your sdcard to your PC. Simple but takes forever for the files to copy depending on how many backups your moving and how big your blobs folder is.
If someone knows a better way, I'm definitely all ears. Really don't like how they changed CWM to this new style. Makes it a pain to offload backups from your phone to your PC.

Didn't even know you could do that. I always just boot to CWM, never use the ROM manager app. That sounds like a paid feature or is it on the free version?
Edit: Yeah, it's a paid feature but I'm seriously considering going this route since it's so damn handy. If I can't figure out how to ADB it, I may just buy the premium version. Thanks bro.

Thanks for all the great tips/answers/comments. I will see what I can do in terms of finding where the backup is stored on my phone now (since it seems there could be two places).
Cheers!!
Hatzy, you can pull the backups using insecure adbd by chainfire [app]. Otherwise, you can only pull sdcard. Or, i believe you can pull via the path /mnt/shell/emulated..
So, after doing some looking... I thiink my best bet is to use Rom Manager's new Download Server feature. I'll give it a try and let everyone know how it works out!!
