APX MODE driver and stuck in APX mode issues - Acer Iconia A500

Tab is an acer iconia a500 8gb version running CWM, and HC bootloader. Last ROM on honeycomb was flexreaper but I forget version. I hadn't used tab in a while.
I wanted to let you know how I resolved it. I spent 2 days trying to upgrade to ICS bootloader and touch recovery. I almost gave up with a partial brick of a tab. I was no longer able to boot a ROM but could get to APX mode (sort of APX mode) where screen was black and power LED was on by using manual process. Hold in power and Reset for 3 seconds then release power while holding reset for another second. Tab would be recognized as APX mode device by the computer and flash tools but I couldn't get any of the tools to do the flashing. Blackthunder and nvflash failed with various errors. I found out after hours of trying this was not really APX mode. See below.
1. To fix USB driver issue. I had to install the Naked USB driver and Google USB driver from SDK package. All links found here on XDA. Only at this point did the tab show as a valid working APX device in devices and printers. Drivers still showed as unknown but worked. In Device manager was showing under USB host controller as acer usb recovery device or something like that.At this point I had all drivers installed. Acer driver, Google USB, and naked driver. I installed in that order until device was working on win 7 x64.
2. APX mode is described in some places as blank screen with power LED on but this is like stage one of apx mode. You still need the tool (nvflash or blackthunder) to get you to the point where the screen says APX mode in white font in the left upper corner and you are truely in APX mode. Use the auto process in the tool until you get there. My tab also had the word acer in large green font in the middle of the LCD when in true APX mode. I was never able to get to full APX mode using manual APX process on tab. This seems to place the tab in an APX ready state. Then you can use nvflash, a500manager, or blackthunder auto tools to get to full apx mode. Tab does a quick reboot or something and vibrates when going from APX ready to full APX mode with the screen going from blank to where it says apx mode in small white letters and acer in green large font (middle of screen). After I was in APX mode The only thing that worked was BABSECTOR or BADSECTOR tool to flash it. I ran the a501a.bat and then the a501b.bat inside the extracted folder to get ICS V8 bootloader and touch recovery installed. Once I used the BADSECTOR tool the process was quick and flashed in a matter of a few minutes. In 2 minutes I had completed what was going on for almost 2 days. Wow! I almost gave up. You can edit the script or just insert your SBK at the prompt.
I found the BAD or BABSECTOR process listed in a short post comment on another forum using google searches. There wasn't a lot of detail. Just the order of file use and that it it worked for someone who was having similar issues. You obviously need your SBK.
Hope this helps someone. Good luck!
Auto signature below is wrong. I had changed to flexreaper ROM.

Hi,
Thanks for your informative post - I had no idea there were different "apx modes".
Can you link where you downloaded your drivers in step 1 and the tools in step 2? If your method actually worked, some links would really be helpful.
Thanks!

[GUIDE] How to unbrick Acer Iconia A500

I just got from a friend an Acer Iconia a500 he says that is bricked.
I tried this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1572622
But I can't continue because I don't have ADB access, what should I do?.
Thanks for all and God bless you.
EDIT:
I got everything to using the secret APX mode, but now is still everything the same the Android System is still there and not charging and not touchscreen...
Go to the bottom to see how I solved this lol...

If your tablet Iconia 500 (ONLY ACER ICONIA A500) went crazy, and present the next symptoms (Yes it has flu...):
-flu
-Android System icon
-Doesn't want to charge (20% / 15% 12%).
-TouchScreen is not responsive.
-Always when you turn it on says Shutting down and never shuts down.
-In case you're using ICS shuts down immediately without even make you see.
The solution is the next!:
1. Download this file: http://www.4shared.com/archive/zyP91E0C/root-321-V4.html (This is the file to put recovery in case that you don't have it).
2. Extract all the files in any folder, it doesn't matter where you put it.
3. Go to Image Folder and rename the recovery to: anyname.img.
4. Download any of the lastest recoveries for Acer Iconia a500 (it will work believe me lol).
5. Put the recovery in the Image folder (Ex. Iconia/root-3.2.1/Image/) and rename it to recovery.img
6. Now open with Administrator Rights DotNetDetecter.exe
7. Continue, continue and continue.
8. If you have ADB Active just put it and it will install it. (If you don't have it just go to 8.1)
8.1 Shut down the tablet completly, connect your USB Cable *micro* (Tablet-Computer), take a paper clip and put it on reset without release it then press the power button and count until 4 or u4ntil you hear the sound when you plug something into Windows
8.2 Now your tablet is in APX Mode and the Acer Utility should now work.
9. Put your UID with a 0 in front of all the numbers (if you don't have it go to secret step).
10. Now let everything work. After everything is done you should have recovery now.
11. Press down volume and the tablet will take you to the recovery.
12. Download some ROM 3.2 or ICS 4.0.3, install it via recovery.
13. Download this file: http://www.mediafire.com/?9svnvdk982sxrw4
14. Install the version you have choosen via Recovery.
15. Voila! Your tablet is revived right now
Press thanks button if this helped you =D
SECRET STEP TO GET UID (IS NOT SECRET THOUGH... lol)
Just go to USB tools and use USBdeview, and is done... (Remember to stay in APX Mode)

Acer Recovery from the Market should have the most recent RA Recovery, and the original GPL compliant CWM recovery.
Or if you already have the original CWM, you can get the most recent RA Recovery here. Just check the threads for the flash files.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459821
For CWM you will need to go to tegraowners.

Problems with opening up settings to turn on usb debugging
Hi Travisantonio,
I have a question:
Did you have any problems opening up the settings when you were on the black "android system" screen?
My touch screen is completely unresponsive at the moment.
Maybe I didnt read or understand everything but with my tab USB view didnt give me my ID or it wouldnt work. Got into ADX mode but couldnt get things working. Tried ADB to list devices and would never list anything. I heard my computer beep when I would hook it up but couldnt really do or complete anything. I couldnt get the DOTNETDETECTOR (PBJUPRADE_ to work. Tried A500 APX flash utitlity. Tired nvflash and falied. Guess I should list more information but at this point I tried so many things to recover dont remember the order I did things. I originally tried to upgrade to a Rom but all things failed and actually not sure what ever got completed. Only thing I could tell my tab did besides black screen was the power button either was white(some type of one) or orange.
This helped me to recover my bricked Acer 500 tablet after a failed ICS upgrade. The Acer update seemed to go okay, but on reboot it froze at the Acer logo and had an error in the corner. Every reboot or button/reset resulted in this. It would not recover or do anything else. I was able to get the USB device ID /serial number using the USB deview 64 program in the usb folder. There were several entries for the tablet but only one had a usable number (bottom right line at the end). Then the tool wiped the tablet and reloaded 3.2.1 and booted to factory new. Thanks for the instructions and to all the other XDA-ers for the tools. I am now on ICS properly.
Trying to recover a bricked acer a500, I just have a black screen on boot with no boot logo, vibration or letters or words on the screen
trying to enter recovery/update mode doesnt work
Im up to the step where is says put in your UID into the program
Just go to USB tools and use USBdeview, and is done...

I did this and found the device but where exactly is the UID located?
looking at other threads, the serial number is the UID however the serial number entry is blank for this device

this method is total overkill for your situation....
how did u get yr tab like this???
if u have total black screen - is the power button lite on?????
what bootloader version are u on
have you had a custom recovery on there
to get your cpuid follow the first link to a guide in my signature - you need to follow steps in the guide if you have any probs then post in the guide thread
the previous owner said he tried to install a custom rom and I think it crashed and this is the result
the power light turns on (white)
if I just power it on, the backlight turns on however its just a black screen, nothing else happens
apx mode seems to be the only thing working right now, I thought this method would be my only chance to get the recovery mode working again
I dont know anything else about the tablet, bootloader ect...

ok thats cool, apx mode works!!!
well try this first - using hard reset:
1) Turn off your tablet,
2) Rotation lock on your left;
3) Press Vol Up closest to rotation lock and power on simultaneously
4) As soon as the tablet vibrates you can release the power button and you should start to switch rotation lock left and right till you see
Erasing Userdata...
Erasing Cache...
Vol Up is still pressed;
5) The tablet starts to format
6) Your tablet will be as clean as it can be.
otherwise plan B!!!
do u know whether tab was running HC or ICS?
u need some package files and a flash tool either apxflash or nvflash
if u start the tools and then connect your tab via usb cable to your pc
there are links to guides in my sig
my cpuid guide shows u what u need and where to get it, info about your cpuid too and drivers - altho you wont need to worry too much seeing as youre in apx
civatos guide has all the links to the packages and all the info you need to patch the bootloader, then you can flash one of the ics roms and youre all good!!!
the process is simple enough - but if you get it wrong it can be frustrating as heck!!!!
tried that method, get no vibration, devices just turns on to the black screen like normal
the only problem right now, I cant retrieve the uid
adb
when I type adb devices, nothing shows up
A500 manager
tried to the use the uid retriever tool however it just stays blank, same for the bootloader
it says it detects the A500 in apx mode
usbdevice view
shows no serial number for this device
I see there is a A500 motherboard on ebay (cant link to outside links...)
"Acer Iconia A500 Tablet Replacement Parts - MainBoard - 32GB MB, H6000 001 PBJ20"
"Complete with Android 4.x installed, 32GB memory and ready to install and boot."
could I get that and just replace the whole mobo and it will work fine?

OK just clarify - black screen, that is, nothing at all displayed AND Power Light ON??
IF u r in apx mode then
U have a couple of options
EUU flash back to HC 3.2.1 or
apxFlash to ICS
Everything you need for doing this is in my cpuid guide link in my sig.
open apxflash tool do not connect your tab Yet
Go as far as the enter apx mode
Now connect your tab to yr pc
Windows should install apx drivers
Once installed. try clicking blue arrow first
If u don't see the do u want to flash window then
You'll need to click on the "enter apx mode " button instead then
Click blue arrow
Hopefully the PC and tab are feeling pretty friendly and decide to take each other on
The tab should flash the bl and install recovery.....u should be good to go from there!!!
EDIT you can try cmd prompt on nvflash folder
Run a500.bat or.bat file that should kick you to bootloader mode
its really important that your screen display something in white letters!!
Entering Acer download mode OR
Entering apx mode
The flash will fail if u don't see something like this. This holds true for all methods
I see there is a A500 motherboard on ebay (cant link to outside links...)

yes, its just a black screen, no vibration, no boot logo, no letters or words on the screen, backlighting for the screen is on, and the power light is on
when I press the blue arrow in a500 apx flash tool it asks me for my SBK, going to that generator site it then asks for my UID which I cant retrieve

if you do not have your cpu id and
if you do not have access to adb and
you're stuck in apx mode
then things are looking grim.....
the only way to get into your tab without yr cpuid is fastboot

someone else was stuck in apx mode a day or two ago, try a search...maybe...
I'm sorry guys I was a little off of this thread .

There is no way to fastboot the tablet in that mode, the only way is to get the UID and then decode it and NVFlash the Bootloader after it is done then put ICS or HC and the EC_ROM files and the tablet will be working again.
I'm gonna throw in the towel and just buy a new mobo for cheap, it seems im screwed without the UID and cant retrieve it either
I wish the previous owner would have gotten the UID beforehand

[Q] Probelm installing v3 bootloader/recovery

I'm having a problem using the following guide, and I can't seem to find anyone asking the same question...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1622425
Following all the instructions, at step 3 in the directions, I get all the info from checking my SBK number, however the last two lines read: file not found bootloader.img, command failure bootloader download failed.
As there was no bootloader.img and I couldn't find any info on such a file, I pushed ahead, thinking this was common.
I can get into APX mode without issue, its the following steps where I seem to have a problem.
Using the first method listed in step 6, I am never prompted with a "press any key to continue", it just launches straight into attempting the install, and freezes installing (I forget the exact file name but I believe it's the bootloader, it is right in the beginning) it stalls at 131702/78908 (I think those numbers are right)
Using blackthun3r's tool renders the same result. I've tried everything can't figure it out.
I am on a stock 033.00_PA_CUS1 rooted using blackthun3r's tool, which worked perfectly...
Also, I never see the tab entering download mode when in APX it just sits with a black screen.
Anyone have any clue where I'm going wrong here?
Are APX/Download mode drivers installed properly

ok, you must ensure the apx/download mode drivers are installed.
For your tab to enter download mode it needs the apx drivers...you should see the windows new hardware wizard installing them, and check out the guide again there's a picture of where to look for them in Device Manager....
Yes APX mode is a black screen AND the white led is lit on the power button.
with the apx flash tool, did you install the .apx files from the guide?
thats about all i can offer, dont know anything about step 6.
just make sure u have the boot/recovery aka apx aka download mode drivers installed and installed correctly...good luck
Right Driver
The driver listed when I connect the device in ATX mode is "Acer USB Boot-recovery driver"... is this the correct ATX driver or is there another, as the image shows "Acer Picasso USB-Boot-recovery driver"

That, is a very good question!!! I dont know whether there is a dedicated APX driver or whether its a generic term for the 'Picasso' drivers as seen in the image.
All I know is that if these 'boot/recovery' Drivers are not installed then the flash wont work. Keep in mind too, that these nvflash methods are fairly new to most of us, so we're all on a steep learning curve -
I'd suggest going thru the process again, write out each step in your own words if you need to, and take your time - it can be difficult relating the instructions your eyes see on screen with what your fingers are tapping out on the keyboard AND having your head trying to make sense of it all!!! Pick one of the methods, it doesn;t matter which, and stick with it - switvhing between 2 or more can make things even more confusing....
I;m about to go on try civs method now, will let u know how i go

UPDATE
steps 1-2-3 check
on getting into apx mode noticed driverrs didnt install
but checked dev man and they were listed as Acer not picasso
ran nvflash

If I knew how to post images then I would...took screenies all the way thru.
Reinstalled all drivers after the first fail.
On next start found new hardware wizard wanted to install drivers for APX!!!!
I have never seen that before
After poking around a bit got them installed with...wait for it...under adb???
They installed as Acer "FastBoot Interface".....
It never showed in my system tray or as Picasso USB etc....in dev man
my next try failed again....waiting for tab to enter download mode......
For my last go at for the nite I bbutton comb'ed to APX first a
nd connected cable 2nd.....within a minute or two Acer Logo on tab
followed by :"entering download mode....within 10 mins I was good to go......
All I can tell you is to keep trying till u get it!!!!!

If they don't show up in either device manager (under adb/apx or USB controllers) or the system tray "safely remove h/ware then they are not installed, if u continue with flash and it fails then u have to reinstall Acer drivers again!!!
install a500 boot manager u can check for a proper connection with this tool....
See link in my sig for a pictorial showing step by step instructions for using apxflash tool
If this still does not work then post back with the following:
What rom and bootloader u have now or began with
What rom u installed at step 4
R u rooted and do u have a custom recovery installed
On validating yr sbk, at step 3, the most important thing here is to see the system info in the command window,
Boot.img errors u see at the end IS A NORMAL PART OF THE VALIDATION in other words its what you're supposed to see. Correct me if I'm wrong but at that command window aren't u supposed to type: go

TF101 "bricked" and I can't restore it

Hi !
I am posting here because I'm a bit desperate.
I have a B40 TF101 and a B70 dock (I bought them separately).
I have tried to flash an official ASUS update downloaded from their website using EasyFlasher.
The thing is it did not work and now my tablet won't boot at all.
All I can do now is start APX mode. The wieird thing is that it does not work with every computer, some detect my tablet and some just don't. Note that it only works while the dock is connected. Without the dock, I can't get the APX mode to be detected on any of my computers.
On the only computer that detects it, I have tried pretty much everything I found on the web to restore a rom, using easyflasher again on windows, then juste wheelie's restore.sh script under linux.
Using easyflasher I can't download the complete rom (it stops at uploading blob.APP, saying that a timer has expired or something like that). I tried to simply install a custom recovery image, to be able to flash an update.zip from there. The flash process seems to go as expected but I just can't reboot into the recovery, the tablet only boots into APX mode.
I am really stuck there, and I hope someone among you will be able to help me or at least tell me there is still hope
Thanks
If you aren't getting many replies here, I would post this on the Q&A section.
You need an NVFLASH rom
even if it doesn't seem to have detected APX mode try it anyway
You have to install the apx mode drivers for your device in order for it to be detected by the computer plenty of tools available to recover your device just search for some good ones will even install the apx drivers for you for example this tool http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1185104

You need the drivers installed
1. Acer website for the acer drivers
2.zip file attached for google/fastboot drivers
Ive attached a .jpg too, u need to have the apx device listed in hardware/printers as shown
3. with apxFlash try dumping your ".bct" when u see that window
4. you can try the afterOTA tool too...
5. if the auto tools dont work then you will need to rollback to HC using tdv4 EUU
6. have a look thru the OP of the cpuid thread for more background info on all things acer http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25429111#post25429111
I've never had this much trouble before.
Ok. A little back story first. I'm not a moron, I have a myTouch 3G Sapphire 32a Fender rooted using the gold card method, LG G2x - P999 Rooted running CM10, and a SGH-T999 Stock rooted (That's a Galaxy S3 for those who don't know).
I have a friend that got an Acer Iconia a500 tablet a year ago. He's not a power user, doesn't know anything about rooting. All he did was play games on it. One day it wouldn't turn on, the screen was blank. Occasionally it would freeze at the Acer logo, but it would never boot up.
Now it's stuck in APX mod due to him pushing a bunch of buttons(idk how he got it into APX mode so don't ask), so there is absolutely no way to boot the tablet. He never turned on USB debugging, and I can't get into the tablet to turn it on because it's stuck in apx mode.
I must stress this!
I have been working on this tablet for 3 weeks now, and read countless posts about how to fix the exact problem that I'm having with this tablet, the only drawback is: step 1 is always, "Turn on USB Debugging." That is IMPOSSIBLE for me to do at this point.
Here is list of what I do know:
Hardware - Acer Iconia a500, APX Driver Version - 1.0.1.0 Released 4/1/2010 Shows as APX in Devices. Shows as Acer USB Boot-recovery driver in device manager.
Software
ADB info - Android SDK rev.20
ADB ver 1.0.29
Windows 7 64-bit completely up-to-date
Commands: adb get-state, get-serial ------- returns, unknown
Commands: adb remount, root, usb ------- returns, "error: device not found"
Command: adb devices -------- returns no value at all.
Programs used for rooting - AfterOTA 1.09, EUUS v3, blackThun3r A500 Manager
I have the CPUID, and SKB (I was somehow able to acquire those in one of my attempts to flash the stock rom)
What I don't know:
What version of Android OS is on the tablet. I'm pretty sure it has ICS, but he was deathly afraid of downloading any updates, even app updates even though I told him that all updates should be installed a.s.a.p. So there's a chance that it's still running HC.
Now here is my problem other than being stuck in APX mode. I have tried AfterOTA, it won't detect anything past Driver Installed on the Tablet information screen because USB debugging isn't enabled. So I can't use most of the functions of that program.
blackthund3r APX Flash v0.4 - Will get the tablet into the bootloader mode where it says:
Acer Iconia APX Mode in the upper right with a glowing yellow Acer logo in the center of the screen, nothing is flashing like the APX flasher says, I have reinstalled the drivers hundred of times with the same results.
Hangs at, "Flashing Bootloader (EBT) stage two - uploading image..."
EUUS v3 - Says, "Acer Iconia not detected"
(I had a screenshot posted here, but stupid forum limitations wouldn't let me. You could see what's going on if it let me post this.)
I do the reset procedure and it just goes back to the same message.
It will go into a screen on the tablet that says "Entering Acer Download Mode" Then EUUS tells me to do the reset procedure again, and this is a continuous loop that results in nothing being flashed. If I ignore that message and just continue nothing happens.
I also have a file called a500-hc.bat that runs nvflash and it gives an error that leads me to believe that a partition on the tablet is corrupted. Everyone says that EUUS v3 should fix this and flash back to original stock, but it obviously doesn't work.
Any help that I could get would be greatly appreciated. If you need any more information, just ask, and I'll do my best to get it. The tablet is (for lack of a better word) bricked, so I'm very limited on what sort of software info I can give you straight from the tab. Please Please Please help. And thank you in advance.

Acer Iconia A500 Stuck "Black Screen"

Hi,
I have an Acer A500 that I'm trying to resurrect after my son tried to root the device. I'm new to this and have checked many sites in search for a solution to this issue (if possible). I'm not sure what all my son did to this device so please bear with me. After reviewing several posts I find my issue unique where as some members may have simular issues I still have not been able to isolate my issues.
The issue: The device is stuck in APX mode with a black screen.
1) The Power Button does illuminate when powered "On" but the screen is "black". There is NO vibration when turned on.
2) The Battery life is good on this device.
3) When the device is powered "On" and connected to my PC the "Blackthund3r A500 manager" display "A500 connected in APX mode. Please Install drivers!"
4) Using Ubuntu I was able to get the "CPUID" and with "SBCalc_v1.1" I was able to get the "SBK".
5) Performing a startup utilizing reset button and On button has no effect
6) Going to "On" with the Vol + pressed has no effect
7) Using "AfterOTA 1.09" on the first "Info" tab under "Tablet Information" it displays Driver "OK driver installed", under USB it displays "ERROR - connect USB cable and enable USB debugging". Everything else displays "waiting for connection". Pressing "Reconnect Tablet" has no effect.
So far that's all I have been able to do to this unit with NO success. I welcome any feedback on this issue.
bricked tablet
best bet is to use babsector
it will install recovery and unlocked bootloader and format all the partions back to default
then you can flash updated recoveries roms etc, from there

Thanks for your response. I'm not familiar with that with that program. Will it work even though the other programs show the device not being connected? (I've Used several USB cords with the same result). Where can I get that program?
you will need to install the acer usb drivers to your pc
if it's win 8/10 then you will need to first disable signature enforcement

babsector is a simple forum search
I complied with the driver settings and still no joy. The device stays in the APX mode and nothing seems to helps on connecting the tablet to the PC. Is there any script that will manipulate the tablet setting for connecting using Ubuntu?
can you give the steps you used to obtain the cpuid? im stuck with a black screen. have ubuntu installed on a virtual system, when i run the command for apx the file that comes back does not have the cpuid.

You can recover the CPUID by following the instructions at this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2096826
You can then convert your CPUID to SBK with the app here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1810618
