Hey guys,
I've been mulling over getting the older generation Nexus 7 (2012) because frankly I want to save money, and I'm not a hardcore tablet user. Mainly surfing the web, reading eBooks, playing a few light games like Jetpack Joyride. This thread is an offshoot of this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2573999.
However, based on my experience with my TF201, performance degrades over time and I was wondering if it's a good idea to pick up an older generation Nexus 7. The older generation appeals to me because of the price for a tablet with mobile data support, but if it slows down to a point where it's pretty much unusable due to eMMC degradation over time, then it's a no-go for me as I plan to keep the tablet for a minimum of 2 years. Official Android support isn't really a selling point since there's always custom ROMs for the Nexus 7.
Please let me know what you guys think. Much appreciated.
Cheers,

I've a nexus 7 wifi (grouper) since 1 year now, and effectively it seems like the performances are degrading over time.
I have to wipe / reinstall a fresh rom every few month to keep it usable..
The hardware does not degrade, period. However as it fills it gets more fragmented and has to clean up more often. This has all been talked about a lot, probably look for previous threads on this subject.
This problem is not a big deal on 4.3 and newer as long as you leave at least 3 gigs free on storage.

That's my problem. With all the android humble bundle i have + multirom (and roms installed on local storage) my free space is very low
Even with android 4.3 and TRIM, my nexus is very slow..

So pretty much, ensure you have ample space on the device and you're good to go still? My TF201 has like 15 GB free (I don't have too much to store tbh) and it lags like crazy. So it seems that the eMMC problem on the TF201 doesn't affect the older Nexus 7?
Thanks,

There's no "emmc problem" on devices. the EMMC does not degrade. Would it eventually over time start failing? Of course. In normal usage in a few years? No.
If you factory reset it'd be exactly like it was the day you took it out of the box.
The problem is that it gets fragmented and starts having to do more erase-before-write cycles, which causes lag.

There is no way that performance will degrade within a month of usage since last reset on a tablet that has 15 GB free space. I barely do a lot of write operations myself. I understand the operating system does, but within a month? That's ridiculous, even more phone which I don't reset often does not exhibit the problem, not even close (I have a Nexus 4).

My 1 year old 32 gb nexus 7 is surely slower than 1 year ago... I tried every rom, from cyano 10 to cyano 11 (slim bean also) and with all these roms, it lags... (Also after factory reset) also my old galaxy sl is not as fast as when it was new. Memory degrade it's a big problem, because after it's been damaged, because of normal use, it doesn't became new, even after a factory reset. I think there is a degrade of memory (and producers want this...it's consumisn).
Sorry for bad english
I am a flash whore and I have had a nexus 7 32gb since it first came out . I have not bought the new one and I am holding on until the next version. I have 5gb free and I just replaced the battery yesterday in it, the old battery wasnt bad I have just used the living hell out of the thing. I am talking non stop use with many many runs down to 1-2percent battery left. I got a OEM ASUS replacement. My current Rom is Purity Rom with ART and M kernel set at 1000MHZ max and min 340MHZ and is set as ONDEMAND. my tablet is fast and does not have lag

Isn't there a way to defragment without going through a wipe?
What about lagfix and TRIM?
+jfed You dirty whore. actually: you clean whore! don't you think that flashing so often has helped you keep away from the 2-3 month degradation? When I'm flashing regularly and checking out new ROMs it does seem to stay very fast, but after about 2 months with one rom it seems to bog down terribly. It is crazy that on a 12.9gb free machine that you'd need to keep 40% of it as free space, but maybe that's the only real fix.
BTW, if you've been flashing so much, maybe you can point us to a setup that's working well for you or that you would go back to if you could keep your hands out of your recovery console.
I'm going to try stock 4.2.1 for a few months and see if that degrades too and after that I think I'll just try to figure out how to keep 5+gb of free space open, which would mean deleting a ton of videos of cats in rollerskates.

hi all , i am looking for a reason to move to latest hardware of phone but i also think nexus 4 is pretty much ok-ish considering it can run anything without any hiccups and the interface is silky smooth , not trying to fuel the throw away culture but when will be the time to move to next phone ?

When any of these occur:
1) The device fails
2) It won't do the stuff you need it to
3) You want a new one and have the money
Personally, I expect to get another full year out of this device... My personal plan unless something fails to work properly is start looking for something new in the summer of 2015, it should be more than sufficient until then.

You don't have to throw it, just sell it... either locally, or I would also recommend swappa.com, you should be able to get $200-$270 for it depending on condition.
Or send it to me... I will pay the shipping, better than throwing it away, and I will make good use of it.
I recommend you the G2 if you sell the Nexus 4....it's better than Nexus 5 and if you want AOSP there will be AOSP roms for sure, i think it has a big community
Its definitely good for at least 2 Google updates and has good specs for running most apps.
After that there will probably be some unofficial updates ported from other devices.
Which means it could well be good for a few years yet as long as it lasts that long.
Its a good phone with still quite decent specs so I wouldn't worry to much about it becoming dated.

thanks for the advice , how long do you think apps will support the hardware of nexus 4 ? i mean the phones with less software can run most apps ,so n4's 2 gig of ram and quadcore as well as adreno 320 can last another year ?

it has a tiny crack on the front camera which isnt big deal only causes a small white halo and the headpiece makes a static sound rest of it is ok , few scratches here and there . so with that whats the ideal selling price ? i paid 400 $ for it when i bought it

N4 hardware won't be outdated for a long time....there are still lots of Dual core phones (2013+) that have no problems with apps....
and as ART gets more and more development the N4 hardware will work even more efficiently!
Basically like the others.... Until it either croaks, or worse, the software gets too outdated to run the latest software.
Having a Nexus 7 (2013 and 2012 models) also takes the load off of my phone, letting it be what it is supposed to be: a phone. Storage is a little low, but I don't carry around a bunch of music so that's not a big issue for me.
The Nexus 4 is the first phone I've had in a while that I wasn't itching to get rid of.
The original granddaddy, the G1: I hated how I couldn't see the keyboard in bright daylight... because of the silver keys on the bronze model. It was also a bit slow, but not as a big of an issue at that time as few apps were very demanding. Had to sell it in a financial crunch...
The MyTouch3G (32b): Hated it from Day 2. By the time I bought this, apps were demanding more memory. Music would randomly stop playing in the background as the memory manager executed things without discretion. It made calls. Just about anything else was a pain.
Galaxy S Vibrant: It was OK, I suppose. This was when each carrier still got their own version of the Galaxy S, as well. T-Mobile's version always lagged behind in software, and was abandoned way too early. The GPS could NEVER get a lock. Ever. And, I hated how everyone thought it was an iPhone.
LG / T-Mobile G2X. First dual core phone my ass. It seemed fast out of the gate, but turned out to be slow at the stupidest things. Games and benchmarks would fly, but no matter what ROM I installed - stock or otherwise - it was just SLOW at daily functions. Often it would get "busy" doing something (no idea WHAT) even with clean installs, and I'd have to pull the battery just to be able to use the phone. GPS was still terrible and frequently required reboots to lock. Then, again, it got abandoned on an old software version. LG had promised ICS, and never delivered. They later backtracked and said they'd only promised it for the LG Optimus 2X, not the G2X variant. The only difference was the radio, but the code was NEVER cracked and so no fully functional ICS could be provided... Between that and just how dog-assed slow it was... its only good point was near indestructibility.
Which brings me to the Nexus 4.... it does all the things right that I need. It responds snapily, it is reliable. Hasn't busted (yet) unlike the extremely fragile Nexus 7 2013.... Only downside is it was made by LG, for whom I have a hatred that transcends dimensions. A $199 price and Google's promise of support swayed me.

Buy a one plus one. It's 300$ for 16gb version and 350$ for 64gb version. It runs snapdragon 801 with 3gb ram. 5.5inch 1080p screen , Bluetooth 4.1, NFC and other features. It's runs cyanogen mod 11s. 13mp exymor camera , 5mp front camera. Both hardware and software navigation keys as per user settings.(user can change).
It will take a while before you can purchase it. only 100 units are for sale. They will soon start mass production.

Really, really disappointed from day 1, worst battery life, insufficient ram, laggy here and there, memory leaks and redraws, black smudges on white screen while scrolling, this is my second replacement, and Android 6.0 which I had I hopes for fixing the nexus 9 is even worse, I just moved back to lollipop the new build lmy48t.
I'm selling my nexus 9, I love nexus and their products, I own a nexus 5 and nexus 7, they both get more battery than the nexus 9, they are faster than the nexus 9, nor have I had a bad experiences with them, they both have 2gb ram and can open crazy tons of apps without redraws or any lock ups, $610 AU dollars in the trash, buying either a new nexus 7 2013 or a Samsung tab s2. Don't say oh factory reset, bro I've tried all ROMs, ive done 1000s of factory resets and this crap ain't working with me, the only thing the nexus 9 hasn't let me down is gaming that's IT!!!, BESIDES ITS A BLOODY HEATER, 80 DEGRESS Celsius, I'll probably use this as a heater in winter.

True due to 3gb ram, however I can't trust nvidia mobile processes anymore, htc one x, the nexus 7 2012 and the nexus 9, have both very bad heating problems as well as performance issues thanks to thermal throttling and memory leaks.
this time around, I'll wait for many solid reviews.
I was too excited when I ditched my ipad 2 (2011).
Did you try DU?
Also did you try an custom kernel?
Was excited to purchase but very disappointed due to the lag, seriously laggy and poor performance. Fortunately bought this on reduced price so didn't hurt so much, had I paid original price would have been very annoyed. Also can return within 14 days so will take the opportunity to do that.

Brother, I love ur work and effort on ur kernels and mods, I've tried DU, cm, aicp, mokee from, vanir exodus, pa, etc....
And all kernels , and still the same, I just went on Bros nexus 7 2013, opens 10 apps and no memory leak nor redraws and still has so much ram left, did the same thing on nexus 9, redraws for every app, ????, its RUBBISH, 1 year of tolerating this is so dam annoying,
Actually, I just tried experimenting with the elemental x kernel. So far it's smoother. We'll see after a month.
All problem because google want to use the Tegra K1 chipset. Terrible battery drink, lag and hot enough to cook some egg. Really disappointed about what a 6.700 mah battery can do. If the nexus 9 is running snap 800, 801 or 805 i think it will perfect device. But i still happy with my Nexus cause i'm a big fan of HTC and waiting their tablet for along time.
This sh*t is getting so old.
I bet if you go to any device's forum on xda you'll find complaints about it being "laggy". Every one. So you better just deal with it because you'll be complaining about it with whatever you buy next too.

I've owned dozens of tablets of various makes and models. The forum complaints are pretty universal for every one I have owned. Laggy performance, poor customer service, taking for eeeevvverr to get updates. Along with the typical threat of "i will never buy xyz tablet again!".
Personally am liking my nexus 9. It is kind of a unique device. 4:3 ratio, front facing speakers front of the line privileges for Android updates. Mine is a 32gb lte model and I got it on craigslist for 200 bucks, so, what's not to like?

I love all the features but the software part is killing the tablet
I guess I am a pretty light user. I mean I am on the thing constantly but I don't play games or do anything that would really tax the system. YouTube, news feeds, Facebook, forums E-mail. Everything I do works just dandy. My two daily drivers are this nexus 9 and a Samsung Galaxy tab pro 8.4. The screen is definitely better on the Samsung. The Samsung does get hot if too many apps are open. The nexus has gotten hot a few times but I just close all recent apps and it cools right down. I like the 4:3 ratio on the nexus but it is definitely much heavier than the Samsung. Speakers are unbeatable on the nexus but they are pretty darn good on the tab pro as well. Both tablets are on the night stand but I tend to grab the nexus most of the time.

I have to agree. I love the hardware but there is something wrong with the software. I'm coming from the Nexus 7 2013 and that can handle multiple chrome tabs open without having to constantly refresh them.
It concerns me that Google/Nvidia don't seem to be sorting these issues out.

IMHO,
the problem is the 64bit Android running on only 2GB RAM => bad combination of software and hardware.
And it's actually only 1.8 GB available RAM. Of this Android OS alone is using 680MB on this device.
Compare that with the 32bit N5 where AndroidOS uses half of that. Other apps show similar numbers when you compare them running on 32bit vs. 64bit. This adds up quickly. Then the only thing the OS can do is kill apps in order to run another one etc.
Nothing Google or Nvidia could do about this, apart from sending out hardware upgrade kits with 4GB (actually this would be cool)
Now, despite this, I like the N9, I like the 4:3 screen for reading! And when mostly reading (Newsreader, Firefox, PlayBook, Kindle) I can get 10 hours usage. Pro-Tip, no root required:
Code:
adb wait-for-device shell wm density 266
Of course the situation changes when I fire up a game that keeps GPU/CPU at max frequency the whole time - then I'm lucky to get 3 hours, without burning my left hand from handling the pretty hot left edge.
This is the sad situation that forces me to root again now that the N9 is running "M": just to be able to down-clock that CPU/GPU monster.
I never experienced lag until I upgraded to Marshmallow. Now that I'm back on Lollipop all is good again. I admit it does run hot when running games, but as for battery life I've never had a device that performed better. I'm very happy with it, but sorry to hear you think it's the worst tablet in the world.
I guess I'm lucky. I initially swapped my first unit because of lightbleed, but I don't have severe lag, redraw, or memory-leak issues. Not any more than on any other Android device I've owned. If anything, things look better, sound better. My only complaint is also my own fault: 16gb, instead of 32gb. I can't do mass-updates from the Play Store, because there just isn't enough space. I blame Hearthstone, but that's another conversation entirely
Hey taronas, what exactly will that code do if I enter it via adb?
Cheers pal.

So, I'm a college student, and my money has finally came back in to me. Working at my job, I've saved up enough money to get me a Nexus 6P finally.
Right now, I'm still really on the fence. I have an original Nexus 5, cracked screen, shot battery, and it has some slowdowns at times. Basically I want this newer phone to just be on the latest edge, but the biggest thing is the battery.
So a few questions.
Is battery really noticeably better? I get 2hours SOT on my N5, which I know is shot. I've restarted it at 40% battery and it showed 13 afterwards.
Do you think 128GB for 100 more dollars is worth it? I'm leaning toward yes, and purchasing the 128GB. My 32GB N5 is full, and it don't have all my music on it, could have lots more. I take pics a lot but don't rely on cloud services to backup. I have deleted some larger apps to open more space on my phone since I'm hovering around 500MB left. 64 is a lot, but 128 is a LOAD more. Is it worth it you think?
Thanks in advance!

Honestly, only you can really answer whether it's worth it or not. The battery is pretty good, I usually get 4-5 hours screen on time. I bought the 64gb model because I can't see myself actually using the full 128gb. You have to ask yourself, do you have 128gb of crap that needs to be on your phone at once?

No, I really don't. Although I do have a lot of music in my iTunes not on my N5, plus the 6P can record 4K video and slow motion video I believe and burst mode. Which could potentially eat a lot of data.
Plus, for 100 dollars not only will I have a top Android phone, I'll have the biggest size and the best money can buy Nexus phone.
I just want others opinions if the extra 100 for double memory is worth it.

If we're going by market value, no it isn't worth it (gb per dollar). What it really comes down to is whether it's worth it to you. Personally, I don't see the need for 128gb on my phone, but I've seen plenty of people claim that even 128gb isn't enough. If you buy the device you'll have a top Android phone regardless of the capacity you go for. It all comes down to whether you actually need that amount of storage.
I had 128, 111 available to user. Well I got the gold standard when it was released. Having the "largest" was not necessary like I thought. I got a better price better color and I still have plenty of memory. Roughly thirty one GB available still and I have like eighteen GB of music.. I did buy a cheap $30 prepaid device solely for caring a memory card with my music and movies to stream Gps etc.... But anyways, this Nexus will last me about 1-2 years given the battery capacity etc.... Sooooo going all the way to the top with memory isn't that serious I guess in the long run

I'm just curious if I'll be like that since I'll have all my music on here, and for 100 more, I double the memory. In theory it sounds like a good idea but I don't know anymore. Very hard to decide.
I also have a Nexus 5 (2013) 32GB and now a Nexus 6P 32GB. I could only get the smallest version from my provider (Vodafone) but I can live with the storage. I´m not somebody who needs to carry e.g. all Seasons of Family Guy or other sitcoms on my device. Worst case I will get a USB Type C OTG Stick and use this from time to time to move eg. pictures and TWRP backups on this one. I would have loved the 64GB version but it was not available because the demand for this phone is not very high. Most guys chose other brands.
In terms of performance and battery life there is a huge difference with the Nexus 6P. I can get up to 8h of SOT ( most the time around 6-7+ ). I don´t have 100eds of Apps or Games installed and I use a customized, Stock based ROM which suits my needs. From a technical point of view, the Nexus 6P is a great device but it´s not as rugged as it seems. Make sure to threat it better than eg. your girlfriend because this device tends to bend or to warp quite easily...even if you use a decent case with it.
I bought the aluminum Nexus 6P with 128GB. I have about 55GB of music that I want to carry with me on my phone while leaving plenty of space for future app installation and Nandroid backups, so anything less than the 128GB version wouldn't have worked for me. I haven't bought a Nexus phone in many years because of the lack of expandable storage and available internal storage being 64GB or less, so it was great to be able to come back to a Nexus phone this cycle.
The 6P has far, far better battery life than the N5. Also, you can charge it far, far faster as well. I'd say 64GB is fine unless you have a huge music or video library you are going to put on the phone. Calculate it out.
Also, if you are going to college in the US, defiantly take some English grammar classes.

Haha. I should pay more attention to my automatic spell check.

I made the jump to the 6p from the 5 and the difference in SOT is soooo pronounced dude. I was constantly running into issues because of my 5 constantly dying on me, or stressed about it constantly being on the verge of dying on me when it wasn't already dead lol. Not an issue whatsoever with the 6p, those extra 3ish hours make a world of difference
As for memory, 64gh should be plenty. I dual boot ROMs, have a large chunk of my music collection and have scads of photos and apps on mine and I'm (barely) getting by with a 32gb That being said, if you're someone who uses their phone in lieu of a computer then obviously the more the merrier.
All of this stuff is relative though, so my needs from my phone won't necessarily reflect yours, obviously. No matter what its a super sick phone though and a massive step up from the 5.

Its so sad to see Google our lord and savior pull the plug on our Nexus 9 :crying:
So guys did the Nexus 9 deserve all the hate it got?
Edit: this does not mean support for it has been dropped it just means you can't buy it at google anymore.
The stock experience of Nexus 9 is not great (quite bad actually). But with good custom rom and kernel i very much enjoy it.
For me, it deserved a lot of it. Mine is still working but just had to do one of the required, every-other-month wipes to prevent issues (lag, reboots). The screen size (and quality) is still perfect for me which is why I moved from n7 2013. Altering dpi settings helped with some lag, esp. Chrome. I can't help but wonder if one more GB of ram wouldn't have totally changed how this device works. For the $, it should have been there. It seems HTC did a particularly poor job with policy/warranty repairs.

18 month support?
So Google have always said that they support their Nexus devices with official firmware for 18 months but does that mean from device release date or from when they stop manufacture and the device and cannot be purchased anymore?
It wouldn't be fair for someone to have bought the device last week only to find the official firmware would soon stop...
I know that the N9 will get Android 'N' but would that be it?

At this point I would consider it to be possible for the N9 to get O, but ultimately we'll have to wait and see
I don't think the device on its own is that bad, (apart from the lightbleed.) All the hate should be directed at Google for not sorting out the issues and not asking HTC for a 3GB device from day 1. :crying:
My N9 has been OK. A bit of light bleed but not an issue. Run custom Rom from new and it does everything goes I want it to do smoothly.
I love the device but for a tablet, I feel they kinda skimped on the specs a little... to a degree that its pretty noticeable especially with many of the latest changes to android requiring more processing power and the fact that a tablet ought to be able to easily handle multi-tasking. It almost seems like their design is more proof of concept based rather than user satisfaction. Either that or they are doing too much and drop the ball on some stuff.
I regret paying so much and getting so little. I will never buy a new device, only after 6 months!
^ Yes, what he said. At $250, this is a great tablet, but for $400 this tablet is a total disappointment.
You don't pay for a BMW, and expect to get a Toyota.
Sure, 3 GB of RAM would have gone a long way to improving this device, but the shoddy construction of the first batch of N9's is simply inexcusable.
Not to mention, the poor quality of the motherboards, which are now failing, leaving many users with a device that crashes when battery gets below 40%.
The reason I'm not buying a pixel c, is because of my experience with the N9.
If 6 months from now, the pixel c still proves to be a quality product, then I'll look at picking one up (once they're on sale, of course)

I enjoy mine, and I like large tablets. With the rumored new Nexus 7, I'll probably grab a pixel c around Christmas if there's no new large Nexus. 7" just doesn't make sense to me with the size of phones.
no, I got two and they are great devices..
No. Though the stock firmware has a bad experience, we still have lots of custom roms and they're great.
If I would have paid $400 for mine I would definitely hate it, but I got it for around $250 directly from HTC in one of those flash sales and I've been pretty happy.
Even if it hurts to say it, as an android fan, for $400 I would rather save a little bit more and grab an Ipad. I had an Ipad 2 for like 3 years and that damn thing never quit, still lasted like 11hrs Sot and even months sleeping (for real). Finally gave it to my GF and her 5yo niece uses and abuses it and that thing still works flawlessly, it's incredible.
Whilst owning the N9 and running CM13, I also picked up a LG v500 for only £70. I put CM13 on the v500 and the performance shows up the N9 for smoothness, consistency and multitasking. This goes against all the benchmarks where the N9 is significantly faster.
With nothing running, the N9 is smoother. Load up a ton of things in the Ram, and it all comes crashing down for the N9 whereas the v500 is still as smooth and speedy as when little is in Ram.
As the N9 was gathering dust, I got rid. R.I.P. Nexus 9.
seems like disabling certain content providers and their corresponding services/receivers for the google play services app has made more than a significant improvement for me. I usually try not to mess with that stuff since it could really screw stuff up too. also, do not deny permissions for anything google. use xposed AppOps to control those. completetely different experience. sad that Google's objective is far more important than user experience.
I paid full price on release day. I hate my decision. This is life. Learn by mistakes.

Just curious, can you tell me what rom are you using in your nexus 9 ? Don't tell me the kernel also, I know that already.

I was using Pure Nexus
But I built myself AOSP so I'm using that at the moment
Kernel what how lol
Been running my Axon on and off for a week (not yet my daily driver due to being lazy with backing up my old phone)... Anyway one thing I have noticed is that the phone seems to be always running at over 50% RAM usage. If I launch one app - or anything else - and then clear all it will revert to running at a variable 1.6 to 2GB of 'available RAM.
Is this normal?
A picture often helps! Sorry that it links off to PhotoBucket - I don't know how to get it to launch in the XDA image window.

Axon 7
Galaxy S3 for comparison
Since 4GB is supposed to be 'wayyy' more than enough (as reviews on the OnePlus3 naysayers would have me believe) I don't expect to have an out of the box phone running at more than 50% RAM usage - this doesn't make sense to my non-technical self. On my i9300 (Galaxy S3) I run CyanogenMod 13 and that OS runs at 260MB of RAM vs 850MB on the Axon! Can someone explain?
I'm running the B3 update but had this before I applied it.
I am having some other connectivity issues and am considering sending this unit back for exchange. It's just hard to tell when I don't know what 'normal' is for this phone.
I want to love this phone. I just need it to love me!
Thanks guys! :good:
I need to restart my Axon 7 (A2017G) every two days or I will get a laggy UI, it's a ram problem too. So we're probably in the same boat. I hope they'll fix it in the next update (which comes after the bootloader unlock thingy if I'm right?)

Yes bootloader unlock is being currently worked on, then an update after that.
RAM management in Android isn't about a predefined amount. You're using way more with the Axon 7 than the S3 because there is way more available. If it's there why not use it to get a better experience ?
Altyough, i haven't noticed this laggy ui issue...

I agree with this MiFavor is crap when it runs for a longer time. I gets laggy on the second day. One has to reboot to get a smooth system again.
While on my old phone with CM and 4GB Ram it stays blazing fast after a week without reboot.
We can only hope CM isn't to far away.
So, reading between the lines here, you guys. Think it's software rather than hardware?
I'm just building an evidence base to warrant an exchange. Although the prospect of a two month wait leaves me reluctant.

It sure is software. 4gb ram is more than enough. Really. It's just that MIfavor likes ram and eats it like chocolate.

I guess what I really was getting at is how likely is it that the physical RAM is faulty rather than the software being RAM hungry. I ask as it seems my phone is a bit flaky in a few areas and I wonder if it's just like a b-grade item.
But take all the points on board that most likely software. How would I be able to rule out any physical RAM antics?

Look at the chipset. It's an snapdragon 820 which specifies the use of LPDDR4 dual channel.
OEM's usually receive a list of tested and recommended RAM chips from the chipset manufacturer.
No OEM who's right in their mind is going to use cheap RAM for a device that needs to survive at least 3 years of usage. Also less likely is that low powered ram is going to become faulty in a time frame under 10 years.
I plan and build enterprise servers on daily basis. I can a sure you it's software RAM management that is the issue.
Okay cool. Thanks for the clarification.
One technical issue down just two others to resolve!
Sorry for digging the grave, but all I want to say is that even today my Axon 7 with Android Nougat is having memory leak after 2 to 3 days usage. I can't switch between apps properly without them crashing and having to restart completely. But there is good news. According to somebody from ZTE, when the Axon 7 is getting Android 8 (Oreo), though only the US model has been mentioned, the MiFavor is going to be removed and the OS is going to be more or less stock-ish. Which would also mean that hopefully the memeory leakage will be almost gone. Also, hopefully, the EU model will get the same experience. 4GB RAM and memory leak is a bad joke.
i used to have the same issues and what i did is i switched to other launcher instead of using MiFavor... and it solved me lag features and i probably need to reboot my phone once a while when i got unresponsive / slow phone wake... then it back to normal again. But again its still doesn't solve my phone battery drain issue... my phone only can last me 6am to 10pm with normal usage (surfing internet, wifi, youtube, emails, whatsapp and reading novels... no bluetooth and no gaming and no song played).
I'm currently using Lawnchair Launcher and even with Lawnfeed plugin allowing the Google Now page from the left, my phone is very responsive and rarely needs a restart. Appcrash is quite rare.
I recommend Lawnchair if you would like a functional and close to stock (but improved) experience.
I used to use Smart Launcher Pro but that started getting a bit fat, as most apps do over time. Feature bloat always slows them down as they get developed.

Have you tried completely reinstalling the system? It fixed my drain and also some random reboots that I couldn't get rid of even by updating. Just install Lineage (don't forget abt the universal bootloader and modem), then boot it up and use it a couple minutes (if you want, you can check if you have that same battery drain in Lineage), then follow a guide to go back to stock (if A2017G, I made one; if A2017U, you can use DrakenFX's back to stock files).
