[Q] Nexus 10: Buy now or Wait 'till 2nd gen?

Hello, everyone.
I am in a search of a 10" tablet, and ever since I found out about Nexus 10 - I have been wanting to get one, and this time seems to be a good moment to get it, especially since its price has dropped since it's official launch a year ago, and I'm not even looking at the prices for used devices.
But what currently concerns me is a chance to gen in an awkward situation of getting a Nexus 10 and a few months later Google could announce the second generation of this tablet, just like with Nexus 7 when I bought it back in December only to find about the second generation which is FAR superior, and I just couldn't resist to not buy it (probably my best bought ever).
First I guess I should get it straight for every one who shall post in this thread - even despite N10 may be behind the rest of the tablet market compared to the latest and greatest 10" devices out there, I really dislike the Big Four (e.g. GNote 10.1 2014, iPad Air, Xperia Tablet Z and Transformer TF701) for various reasons, mainly being the OEM logo on the front and some design decisions I don't quite like.
So I guess you could consider this thread as "Convince me to get the N10", and I have several questions about this device:
1) How is the screen compared to N7 2013, if there are any owners of both devices?
2) How well does it perform? Do you face the lack of available RAM? Does it perform well on latest Android versions?
3) How good it this tablet for gaming? Is Mali GPU powerful enough to run Real Racing 3, Asphalt 8, Dead Trigger 2, Dungeon Hunter 4, Galaxy on Fire 2?
I was also thinking about an option of getting a used N10 + used iPad 2 if I am lucky with money

Well there were some rumors that LG will release a 2nd Gen nexus 10 but there's no official announcement yet. I'd say it's pretty close so you can wait a month until the holidays.
Either way, this is still a great tablet, kit kat brought a lot of under the hood improvements and the device is running very well, especially if you root it.

Unless you have to have the latest and great, you can pick up a used 1st gen cheap in like new shape... That's what I just did. People are unloading them now...

We're only talking maybe a month at most at this point so I'd just wait, you can go ahead and buy a refurbished one to save money though

Love my N10. I had thought about purchasing a Samsung Note 10.1 2014 edition, but changed my mind after using it for over a week (borrowed one from a friend). Nice performance boost, but no where near enough to make a large enough to warrant $500 when I have a decent tablet that does everything I need. S-Pen was really nice, but I stopped using it two days into the trial.
As to the questions.
1. The N10 has a super crisp 320ppi display. The resolution is higher than the N7 2013 tab, but the N7 has a higher price rating. One very important note: Kitkat 4.4 has made a significant change on the N10. Improved the color calibration. See the color calibration thread and check the posts post 4.4. I have an N10 and a N7 (original) and the color really improved on the N10. Someone who has the new N7 as well as the N10 will need to confirm, but I believe that they close to parity now.
2. Performance is great! I'm able to do whatever I want without lagging performance. The Mali God used also does a great job. Sure faster GPU's have since been released but the one selected was a top performer at release and still holds it's own. 4.4 also brought a boost in my benchmarks so the driver is better optimized than prior.
I don't know of any lack of memory. The 2GB does have a portion allocated to the GPU's, but I multitask a number of apps and have yet run into a problem related to a memory constraint. KitKat has also improved memory handling, so even less of an issue than previously.
3. Gaming? This tab really rocks. I have Asphalt 7 and Batman TDKR, Nova 3 and several others. Very smooth and perform well. Would like to see options to change screen resolution as the few times there is any reduced fps would be improved at a lower resolution.
iPad 2? Why? So that you can repurchase your apps on both platforms? Makes little sense to me.

A refurbished tab makes sense as you still get the warranty and save even more.
I disagree about one month at best. Media hype started this trend. If pattern follows suit, it's more likely in July 2014.

Uhh, I think you overshot the date by half a year+

Those that are saying it is only a month away etc are PURELY speculating, or citing those dodgey link bait troll sites.
There has been NO credible evidence that a second gen N10 is even in existence.
It could be 1 week. It could be 6 months, OR they might NEVER make another 10 incher again!
I'll just happily plod along with my HP touchpad until it is released.. but I CANT STOP SEARCHING FOR NEWS ABOUT IT. I don't know what it is but I want a 2nd gen N10 so bad.. I think because I saw how good the 2012 N7 was, then the 2013 N7 blew it out of the water..

I got a 90 warranty refurbished delivered for $314 and I expect the new N10 when it comes out soon will be like $500+shipping+tax and so be heading to $550+, will it be twice as good as the $314 I paid? Doubt it.
Is there anything wrong about the current N10 which justifies delay? I'd say the biggest problem it has is probably battery life.

Why refurbushed and not just used? Is it any different from a regular device somehow?

Well I'm not using my first gen iPad as my main device, and I am not planning to do so with iPad 2 either - it's just for few exclusive games and Tap Tap Revenge stuff, so no need in buying anything again

Hmm, so if I get a N10 for christmas or my b-day (both of which are in december) - I'll still have 6 months until the tablet is announced and a couple more until it arrives to Russia, which would be pretty similar to my N7 -> N7 2013 scenario

True, about speculation and yeah, maybe it does not even exist in the first place, but why would Google ditch the 10" market? The Nexus line needs devices of every popular size there is, and Google delivered just that with N4, N7 and N10. I see no reason in leaving that particular category by not releasing a second gen N10

What about it? Is 9000mAh battery not enough for a whole day of moderate usage?

Woot currently has a refurbished Nexus 10 32 GB on sale for $279. It's really tempting, but I think I'm going to hold off.

Reason: a bit more protection if its dud, refurbished at least has gone through kind of factory checking.

W'e're making different points. I agree the battery is long enough because for those situations I'm using it for many hours, I'm static right next to a mains power which I'd use anyway, those situations where power is not available, there's enough battery life.
I was making the point in the tablet universe, it is not amazingly good life, it is the weakpoint to improve in next version.

I have a 12000mah USB larger battery which will do one full recharge of a 9000mah tablet and was like $40 and works with everything, plus a 5400mah slim battery if I was space/weight concerned.

But is it safe to get such a device?

Well, the almost 3000mAh battery capaticy difference between N10 and iPad 3/4 obviously affects how long a tablet can live, that's not to mention the ridiculous 2500x1600-whatever resolution and the Exynos chip (which, AFAIK but I may be mistaken, isn't as efficent in the battery life aspect as Snapdragon CPUs are)

My thinking exactly, they're still in stock.
I got a few issues, one is when the N10 immediately comes out, it will be only from Google Play, and they'll hit it with both tax and shipping. If I wait a few months (typically) I can get it without either and the price drops. So the Woot offer is $314, whilst N10 successor, in reality will be in the $580 region, which is 85% higher cost.
Refurbished with 90days warranty covers against receiving a dud.
I looked at ebay, and they're selling used for at least that price.

I'm not understanding you. From a dealer, on a creditcard, will you get a working system? That's my concern.
If you're concerned about buying just before a successor comes out, then you must cover that in two ways:
only get it if the current specification, performance, meets your needs, so when successor comes out you don't actually have a problem which needs solving.
Take the age of the device into account when buying used. I'd say at the price Woot is asking, its fair given the date N10 came out and the % probability of a new device coming out. The Nexus 10 was announced over a year ago, I'd say chance of a new model announcement soon is high.
If you're trying to decide about waiting for new product which may come out soon, then you'll always have issues, e.g. the new product may get defects with initial batches, so even if the new device was announced today, you'd be wise to not get right anyway, I always wait for others to get it, and let defects get discovered and buy from the 2nd batch anyway so I'd not buy the next N10 for a few months anyway.

Anyone who spend hours and hours working on a tablet, should have the PSU with them, I don't think the battery life is so low to render it useless, a typical example of me being away from power is about 3 hours.
The PSU on tablets are small, microusb cables can be small, its not a Netbook with a bulky PSU and cord.

My concern is about the "refurbished" mark - what differs a normal new device from the same but refurbished one? From the definition I read about it being returned to the manufacturer for some kind of repairs, but what about scratches, breakings on the body, any damage, etc?
And yeah, if there is a second gen N10 coming - I'm probably getting it anyway, especially if it's not Samsung which means "Hello, Snapdragon" and maybe a Full HD screen instead of current N10's resoltion (like, seriosuly - who needs such a big-a$$ resolution on a 10" tablet!? These number races are killing the industry today ffs)

So your choices:
So imagine the N10's used value is $250 selling on ebay when the N10 2 comes out and suppose to swap to N10 2 in 6 months from now.
If you buy a N10 new now they're available for about $415 delivered, you'll add small blemishes to it, so it will look the same when you sell it as a refurbished one, you'll pay more $ for it and so when you sell it, you've lost $165, so you paid $1/day to use it.
If you buy a refurbished N10 for $314, it will look the same when you sell it as the new one when you sell it, but you lost $64, so you paid $0.4/day to use it.
The key thing is what you get in your hands is fully working with no significant marks than you'd do yourself to a new unit.

Well you've answered your own question then, there are problems for you with the current model, issues you'd find an urgent need to swap it out, so don't buy the current N10 obviously.
I'm that guy who paid $200 for an additional 4MB of memory in 1993 on my PC, things getting better is just a fact of life, the key is to know what is not acceptable to you and hold off buying til what is your need is delivered. Apple started good-spec tablets, but I deemed their
Google is acting to drive down prices, even if N10 2 isn't out soon, they're stimulating the market so you'll get whatever you deem you need eventually.

Also you can get a year warranty for like 50 dollars from woot if you want. Believe you also get the standard 90 day warranty with just the tablet purchase

I think 90days is enough to cover for receiving a dud, anything after is really about you accidentally damaging it and those longer warranties do not cover for accidental damage. Hence the free supplied warranty in reality is sufficient.

Well not in my case, getting it from the HS, finding it to be broken or something, and then sending it back, and waiting again until a new one arrives... Too much time consuming, especially with how much time the deliveries usually take from the states to Russia (which can reach up to 2 weeks or even more)

I don't care if the nexus 10 2 was $1000 I would buy it the instant it is released..

when will the nexus 4 hardware be considered obsolete ?

hi all , i am looking for a reason to move to latest hardware of phone but i also think nexus 4 is pretty much ok-ish considering it can run anything without any hiccups and the interface is silky smooth , not trying to fuel the throw away culture but when will be the time to move to next phone ?

When any of these occur:
1) The device fails
2) It won't do the stuff you need it to
3) You want a new one and have the money
Personally, I expect to get another full year out of this device... My personal plan unless something fails to work properly is start looking for something new in the summer of 2015, it should be more than sufficient until then.

You don't have to throw it, just sell it... either locally, or I would also recommend swappa.com, you should be able to get $200-$270 for it depending on condition.
Or send it to me... I will pay the shipping, better than throwing it away, and I will make good use of it.

I recommend you the G2 if you sell the Nexus 4....it's better than Nexus 5 and if you want AOSP there will be AOSP roms for sure, i think it has a big community

Its definitely good for at least 2 Google updates and has good specs for running most apps.
After that there will probably be some unofficial updates ported from other devices.
Which means it could well be good for a few years yet as long as it lasts that long.
Its a good phone with still quite decent specs so I wouldn't worry to much about it becoming dated.

thanks for the advice , how long do you think apps will support the hardware of nexus 4 ? i mean the phones with less software can run most apps ,so n4's 2 gig of ram and quadcore as well as adreno 320 can last another year ?

it has a tiny crack on the front camera which isnt big deal only causes a small white halo and the headpiece makes a static sound rest of it is ok , few scratches here and there . so with that whats the ideal selling price ? i paid 400 $ for it when i bought it

N4 hardware won't be outdated for a long time....there are still lots of Dual core phones (2013+) that have no problems with apps....
and as ART gets more and more development the N4 hardware will work even more efficiently!

Basically like the others.... Until it either croaks, or worse, the software gets too outdated to run the latest software.
Having a Nexus 7 (2013 and 2012 models) also takes the load off of my phone, letting it be what it is supposed to be: a phone. Storage is a little low, but I don't carry around a bunch of music so that's not a big issue for me.
The Nexus 4 is the first phone I've had in a while that I wasn't itching to get rid of.
The original granddaddy, the G1: I hated how I couldn't see the keyboard in bright daylight... because of the silver keys on the bronze model. It was also a bit slow, but not as a big of an issue at that time as few apps were very demanding. Had to sell it in a financial crunch...
The MyTouch3G (32b): Hated it from Day 2. By the time I bought this, apps were demanding more memory. Music would randomly stop playing in the background as the memory manager executed things without discretion. It made calls. Just about anything else was a pain.
Galaxy S Vibrant: It was OK, I suppose. This was when each carrier still got their own version of the Galaxy S, as well. T-Mobile's version always lagged behind in software, and was abandoned way too early. The GPS could NEVER get a lock. Ever. And, I hated how everyone thought it was an iPhone.
LG / T-Mobile G2X. First dual core phone my ass. It seemed fast out of the gate, but turned out to be slow at the stupidest things. Games and benchmarks would fly, but no matter what ROM I installed - stock or otherwise - it was just SLOW at daily functions. Often it would get "busy" doing something (no idea WHAT) even with clean installs, and I'd have to pull the battery just to be able to use the phone. GPS was still terrible and frequently required reboots to lock. Then, again, it got abandoned on an old software version. LG had promised ICS, and never delivered. They later backtracked and said they'd only promised it for the LG Optimus 2X, not the G2X variant. The only difference was the radio, but the code was NEVER cracked and so no fully functional ICS could be provided... Between that and just how dog-assed slow it was... its only good point was near indestructibility.
Which brings me to the Nexus 4.... it does all the things right that I need. It responds snapily, it is reliable. Hasn't busted (yet) unlike the extremely fragile Nexus 7 2013.... Only downside is it was made by LG, for whom I have a hatred that transcends dimensions. A $199 price and Google's promise of support swayed me.

Buy a one plus one. It's 300$ for 16gb version and 350$ for 64gb version. It runs snapdragon 801 with 3gb ram. 5.5inch 1080p screen , Bluetooth 4.1, NFC and other features. It's runs cyanogen mod 11s. 13mp exymor camera , 5mp front camera. Both hardware and software navigation keys as per user settings.(user can change).
It will take a while before you can purchase it. only 100 units are for sale. They will soon start mass production.

Pre-ordered last week, but decided to cancel order

I get irrationally excited about each new Nexus device, and as such I pre-ordered the N9 as soon as I was able to (32GB version).
Today, I decided that the device is not worth the $500+ cost (including tax and shipping for the 32GB model). I already have a N7 (2013, 32GB), and N10 (16GB), and both still work great for my needs. All I really do is web-browsing and watch movies/TV (Hulu Plus, NetFlix, Google Play Movies) on my tablets, so what is this new device going to offer me in terms of real-world performance? I am a bit of a spec-whore, but the new N9 only has 2GB of RAM and a non-interesting PPI, so I don't feel like the N9 gives any bragging rights.
Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the N9 will be great, but for my needs, this will be the first Nexus device not making its way into my mailbox.
The N6, on the other hand, will definitely be replacing my N5!

I certainly understand thinking that neither is worth the upgrade, but the Nexus 9 looks to be a much bigger bump over the Nexus 7 than the Nexus 6 vs the 5. The 9's SoC is much more powerful than the 7's, while the 6 is more of a modest upgrade to the 5.

Nexus 9 is not a successor of the N7, it is from the N10

I agree with this, but I was shocked at the nexus 6 price! No way I can afford that for a while, that's for sure! 4 kids near Xmas lol. I am interested to see the specs and price of the oneplus two! This company has a bright future, Thay just have to lose the frustrating invitation only system.

For my smartphone, the increased screen size of the N6 is useful for things like GPS, watching movies, and reading. I already watch a pretty large amount of video content on my phone, so a bigger screen will improve the experience.
Also, the N6 just looks so pretty

My Nexus 7's touch screen decided to stop working on the hardware side after a year (it took a hard fall while moving this summer but it was in a case) and I couldn't RMA it because the warrantee expired. I decided that the Nexus 9 was worth it for me because of the k1 Denver which is a huge upgrade over the N7 (2013) processor. The 2gb of RAM isn't ideal, however its still more than enough for me to play some games and use it for various things. I am also excited about the larger size, I had a LG G Pad 8.3 until it got water damaged and I miss the larger tablet experience. This summer was full of bad luck with devices for me so I am eager to start fresh with s great new tablet. I considered the Tab S for a while but I couldn't get over that terrible home button and capacitive keys on it. I know everyone is different and the price is high for a nexus but it's still cheaper than a pos ipad.

I tried a Galaxy Tab S 8.4 which has an incredible screen and is quite good overall, but that god awful touchwiz with it's stupid small lags drove me nuts - so I sold it as well.
What remains is Nexus 9 I suppose.

I just can't accept a 32GB device. Not now. Not after I've had several devices now with 64GB of storage. My first Android tablet, 3 years ago...32GB plus a 32GB card.

I'll swap the N10 for the N9 and keep the N5 and it's a pretty easy decision for me.
While the N10 still is a great device with a superb display (for 10" tablet) it could use a little more power. I use it to read on the web most of the time and it's often sluggish while browsing now. That especially became apparent after I got the N5.
What's keeping me from getting the N6 is the size and also the price. 6" is just too big for a phone that's supposed to reside in my pocket. If it would be priced in the range of its predecessors I maybe would try it for the fun of it, but at 700 - definitely not.

Really like the sound of the Motorola droid turbo, monster of a phone! Also has a very large battery almost 4000mah

I pre-ordered an lte one from Best Buy and have similar thoughts Maybe the nvidia shield, but, decided to go through with it, and yes I feel its expensive. But had $25 in reward dollars and can pay it off over a year.
I do need a tablet with built in lte do to the fact we do a lot of short trips with medicore wifi, or the hotel charging for medicore wifi. Yes I can wifi tether but it burns the battery down on the phone, and being away, use that as well. Still have about a month to thnk about it, and if I change my mind, can just not open up the packaging and bring it the local BestBuy for a refund.

Depends on needs I suppose. It's no secret the N9 is targeting more productivity-oriented people. If I were primarily a multimedia/games consumer, I wouldn't be terribly interested in the N9.
For me though, I'm a student, and when I'm not doing student stuff, I'm generally doing emails, vid chat, web browsing, maybe a casual game occasionally like poker or something, so the N9 16GB is actually all I need. To be honest the only time I ever feel space constraints is when it comes to loading up a bunch of apps (which I'll never use) or putting HD movies on the device.
Plus, the availability of 64GB otg usb sticks for 40 or so bucks make that a non-issue really.
As for phones, I see no incentives to go from the N5 to the n6. Technically the N5 is still a better phone than most people are using, not to say that from an elitist sense, but the fact that as far as tech specs go, apps and everything else, it's got what most people need (or don't need considering the recent NFC shutoff debacle at walmart and other major retailers)... Especially considering I'm the type of person who will be carrying my N9 just about everywhere. I'm not going toward this "I'll read and browse on my phablet" trend. 6" is too small to enjoy doing tablet stuff, and it's too big to be a comfortable phone, in the pocket and in the hand.

It's kinda hard to hear someone say that the N9 is too expensive and then decide to go for the much more expensive N6 instead.

I agree that not everyone needs a ton of storage, but there's NO excuse for them to not even give us the option. OTG sticks out, can get broken off, and uses power. So no, it's not a non-issue.

I can certainly understand the confusion, other than the fact that I didn't say the N9 is too expensive. What I said is that the cost of the device is not worth it FOR ME, given the devices I already have and the usage requirements for said devices. N9 will no doubt be a great device, and if I were buying a new tablet today, it would be the first (and only) one on my list.

Well, if it didnt have knox I would have just gotten rid of the damn touchwiz. But then you'd have warranty problems in case the tablet decides to die someday.

Worst tablet in the world!!!

Really, really disappointed from day 1, worst battery life, insufficient ram, laggy here and there, memory leaks and redraws, black smudges on white screen while scrolling, this is my second replacement, and Android 6.0 which I had I hopes for fixing the nexus 9 is even worse, I just moved back to lollipop the new build lmy48t.
I'm selling my nexus 9, I love nexus and their products, I own a nexus 5 and nexus 7, they both get more battery than the nexus 9, they are faster than the nexus 9, nor have I had a bad experiences with them, they both have 2gb ram and can open crazy tons of apps without redraws or any lock ups, $610 AU dollars in the trash, buying either a new nexus 7 2013 or a Samsung tab s2. Don't say oh factory reset, bro I've tried all ROMs, ive done 1000s of factory resets and this crap ain't working with me, the only thing the nexus 9 hasn't let me down is gaming that's IT!!!, BESIDES ITS A BLOODY HEATER, 80 DEGRESS Celsius, I'll probably use this as a heater in winter.

True due to 3gb ram, however I can't trust nvidia mobile processes anymore, htc one x, the nexus 7 2012 and the nexus 9, have both very bad heating problems as well as performance issues thanks to thermal throttling and memory leaks.

this time around, I'll wait for many solid reviews.

Was excited to purchase but very disappointed due to the lag, seriously laggy and poor performance. Fortunately bought this on reduced price so didn't hurt so much, had I paid original price would have been very annoyed. Also can return within 14 days so will take the opportunity to do that.

Brother, I love ur work and effort on ur kernels and mods, I've tried DU, cm, aicp, mokee from, vanir exodus, pa, etc....
And all kernels , and still the same, I just went on Bros nexus 7 2013, opens 10 apps and no memory leak nor redraws and still has so much ram left, did the same thing on nexus 9, redraws for every app, ????, its RUBBISH, 1 year of tolerating this is so dam annoying,

Actually, I just tried experimenting with the elemental x kernel. So far it's smoother. We'll see after a month.

All problem because google want to use the Tegra K1 chipset. Terrible battery drink, lag and hot enough to cook some egg. Really disappointed about what a 6.700 mah battery can do. If the nexus 9 is running snap 800, 801 or 805 i think it will perfect device. But i still happy with my Nexus cause i'm a big fan of HTC and waiting their tablet for along time.

I bet if you go to any device's forum on xda you'll find complaints about it being "laggy". Every one. So you better just deal with it because you'll be complaining about it with whatever you buy next too.

I've owned dozens of tablets of various makes and models. The forum complaints are pretty universal for every one I have owned. Laggy performance, poor customer service, taking for eeeevvverr to get updates. Along with the typical threat of "i will never buy xyz tablet again!".
Personally am liking my nexus 9. It is kind of a unique device. 4:3 ratio, front facing speakers front of the line privileges for Android updates. Mine is a 32gb lte model and I got it on craigslist for 200 bucks, so, what's not to like?

I love all the features but the software part is killing the tablet

I guess I am a pretty light user. I mean I am on the thing constantly but I don't play games or do anything that would really tax the system. YouTube, news feeds, Facebook, forums E-mail. Everything I do works just dandy. My two daily drivers are this nexus 9 and a Samsung Galaxy tab pro 8.4. The screen is definitely better on the Samsung. The Samsung does get hot if too many apps are open. The nexus has gotten hot a few times but I just close all recent apps and it cools right down. I like the 4:3 ratio on the nexus but it is definitely much heavier than the Samsung. Speakers are unbeatable on the nexus but they are pretty darn good on the tab pro as well. Both tablets are on the night stand but I tend to grab the nexus most of the time.

I have to agree. I love the hardware but there is something wrong with the software. I'm coming from the Nexus 7 2013 and that can handle multiple chrome tabs open without having to constantly refresh them.
It concerns me that Google/Nvidia don't seem to be sorting these issues out.

IMHO,
the problem is the 64bit Android running on only 2GB RAM => bad combination of software and hardware.
And it's actually only 1.8 GB available RAM. Of this Android OS alone is using 680MB on this device.
Compare that with the 32bit N5 where AndroidOS uses half of that. Other apps show similar numbers when you compare them running on 32bit vs. 64bit. This adds up quickly. Then the only thing the OS can do is kill apps in order to run another one etc.
Nothing Google or Nvidia could do about this, apart from sending out hardware upgrade kits with 4GB (actually this would be cool)
Now, despite this, I like the N9, I like the 4:3 screen for reading! And when mostly reading (Newsreader, Firefox, PlayBook, Kindle) I can get 10 hours usage. Pro-Tip, no root required:

Of course the situation changes when I fire up a game that keeps GPU/CPU at max frequency the whole time - then I'm lucky to get 3 hours, without burning my left hand from handling the pretty hot left edge.
This is the sad situation that forces me to root again now that the N9 is running "M": just to be able to down-clock that CPU/GPU monster.

I never experienced lag until I upgraded to Marshmallow. Now that I'm back on Lollipop all is good again. I admit it does run hot when running games, but as for battery life I've never had a device that performed better. I'm very happy with it, but sorry to hear you think it's the worst tablet in the world.

I guess I'm lucky. I initially swapped my first unit because of lightbleed, but I don't have severe lag, redraw, or memory-leak issues. Not any more than on any other Android device I've owned. If anything, things look better, sound better. My only complaint is also my own fault: 16gb, instead of 32gb. I can't do mass-updates from the Play Store, because there just isn't enough space. I blame Hearthstone, but that's another conversation entirely

So, while i realize things are pretty quiet here, i figured i would give a friendly hello to the community. While shopping around yesterday, i ran across a 9 (black, 16GB) tucked away in a store (used of course). Despite knowing the reputation of the tablet, i figured what the heck; everything looks good on it (buttons are firm, no major bleed, screen is sharp), and its only $80.. why not. As it was, i was looking for something better (and more supported) than my Asus Z580CA (gotta love x86 chips in Android tablets.. ugh). I had been mulling over a K1 Shield, but the prices are just too high, and the Pixel C even more so.... so the price point here satisfies my larger tab desires.
Truth be told, after unlocking, and putting LOS (and FED) on, the tablet is actually really fast; and i will dare say noticeably so compared to my Asus (with double the memory and cores). No denying the Asus is lighter and thinner, but at the cost of usability and battery life (no room for a battery, really); i actually like the firmer bulk of this guy.
Anyway, i realize there may not be many out there to read this, but either way... one more reporting in for the ranks!

I'm still around too. I used it for 6-8 months when it came out then my son used it for about 2 years with only minor issues. Towards the end of his use we started seeing the fast battery drain issue. When I went to re-root it I found the USB port would work with ADB anymore. So after much diagnosis I decided to suck it up and spend $10 on a replacement daughter board from Ebay. Works like a charm now. Funny thing is I really wanted to root it to find the battery drain source but since swapping out the USB daughter board, rooting I haven't seen the issue anymore. It may have been a bad port all along. I did however install Flar's kernel which may also have helped?
TL/DR - Still a good tablet. My 2 cents.

I have a bunch of tablets, including a Shield K1. Just got the Nexus 9 a month ago or so. I've always wanted to own one because of its unique CPU. It is pretty fast indeed with one of the custom OSs here.
It certainly gets warm though if the CPU doesn't get its idle time. Pretty easy to get it to throttle back the clock speed due to heat there. Still, the Denver CPU was a speed demon in 2014. Pretty nice for web browsing! I'm going to guess that NVidia didn't use the Denver K1 in the Shield Tablet because of the power consumption of these big CPU cores. Not a good idea in a smaller gaming-oriented tablet. I feel it's similar to if Intel tried to put a Core M in a small tablet. Beefy CPU and GPU that aren't exactly super low power.

Picked up the nexus 9 and like some of the feel, etc pretty responsive as well. Not loving battery life however. Any recommended rom/kernel/settings for good battery life? Use it mostly for a few games but getting like 4 hours right now...

Well, being late in nexus 9 party, means you have saved some money. Nexus 9 runs much better with nougat.

I mainly use it for playing movies. I watch downloaded movies from a USB stick and I get several hours of screen on time. I usually do about 3-4 hours of driving for work, and watch movies along the way (I know, horrible idea safety-wise) and I usually have 35-40% battery life left.

I'm thinking about getting the Nexus 9. if i would have saw one for 80 bucks, I would have gotten it too with out thinking.
I'm also glad to see that many on here are still using this device and have some great input.
I was about to get one off of swappa, but looking around to find the best price. I actually need one by end of next week.
I use it for movies of cource, but taking notes and sometimes document work. So I will be also looking for the best keyboard too.

I might be getting one for about $200 CAD, used but looks to be in good condition. My other option is waiting and saving a bit for a Pixel C, but those are really hard to find and about $300 more. What sort of SOT do people get on LOS?

Mine should be delivered tomorrow will by up all night Rooting and Roming. I will compare my SOT with the iPad mini I'm getting rid of.

Yep, me too. Glad to see happy users, I have always wanted one and with the Pixel C prices being soooo much higher and the 'no root' options for the ASUS ZenPad 3S 10 I figured I'd grab a 'Like New' used model off Amazon for $200 with the 30 day option to return. But I love Nexus so much probably will just keep it no matter what (unless it has some of the 'issues').

Just got it today and haven't rooted a device for a few years now, but it's like riding a bike haha. Brings back great memories of the first device I ever rooted which was my HTC EVO.

I had been mulling over a K1 Shield, but the prices are just too high, and the Pixel C even more so.... so the price point here satisfies my larger tab desires.
Truth be told, after unlocking, and putting LOS (and FED) on, the tablet is actually really fast; and i will dare say noticeably so compared to my Asus (with double the memory and cores). No denying the Asus is lighter and thinner, but at the cost of usability and battery life (no room for a battery, really); i actually like the firmer bulk of this guy.
Anyway, i realize there may not be many out there to read this, but either way... one more reporting in for the ranks!

I love this tablet, 32 GB with LTE, way better that the ipad Mini LTE i was using. Plus I dont have to worry about apps being deprecated for my system version.
I use it mainly for content sling TV, netflix, youtube and some of my own movies.
I rooted it and i'm using the lineage OS rom and it is great.
trying to catch up on my superhero movies, I watched CA winter solder and CA civil war. on one charge with plenty of battery left.
looking forward to doing more with this tablet
does anyone have a recommendation for a keyboard case to use. I used the ipad mini to take notes at meetings and would like to do this with a good keyboard

I missed the days of the first Nexus 7
This tablet has potential even now 3 years after release: Cuda+Vulkan have already been enabled by our devs.
After setting stock rom i have already understood performance of stock roms
Next days I will start experiments

i was thinking of trying to get a shield tablet but it looks like you cant find them anywhere but after seeing prices of the N9 on swappa, seriously thinking about picking one up. My TN7 battery only lasts like an hour and turns into a nuclear furnace when I turn it on. just rooted my moms trustee old N7 which she has kept in mint condition. I am excited about the chance to pick one of these up for about $150 just to play around with them and check out the capabilities. You can't beat the bang for the buck from what I see.

There are a couple of experimental Oreo roms. The only problem is hardware acceleration for video doesn't work.
