Hello all I got my first Nexus One yesterday I know I should root it but I've never dropped the cash I did for a device I know there is a chance of a brick. I need to let the newness wear off.
But the purpose of this post is any suggestions on specific apps for the Nexus I can try out in the market. There are some that Ive read in this forum some but maybe some were left out.
Thanks in advance.
Just sayin, but the only real chance of a brick is to let your battery die or pull it while flashing the radio. (to my understanding)
try the XDADevelopers app, it's pretty nifty.
done and done has anyone ported swype to nexus yet

Thank you for these
Just make sure your battery is charged, you probably won't brick this phone unless your trying to.
While there's not much of a chance for bricking, it supposedly does void your warranty. Some people have been able to get work done even after unlocking though.
With that said, I thought the same thing and thought I would wait about a month before I unlocked it, but that lasted about 2 days lol.
I unlocked it and flashed Cyan's ROM and haven't looked back since.

If you didn't engrave it, don't root it yet. Use it for a week or two, make sure there's no reason to return/replace it due to some defect. If there is no reason, then root it =)
My only 2 reasons for rooting it are: WiFi tethering and Flashlight. Imo, there are no other real reasons to do it, stock rom is extremely well done and I didn't notice much difference between it and Cyan.
Just root it..you'll truly own your phone then. Unless you don't know how to read and follow instructions properly or are just plain incompetent..which I doubt you are since you found this forum~ the chances of bricking are low.
Root it and never look back.
Nah, give it a few days to let any hardware issues make themselves known, then root it if your of a mind.
If you don't root it, all you are going to be able to think about is rooting it. I say use it for a few days to make sure all the hardware is good and go for it. I think I lasted about 36 hours before giving in and I told myself that I wasn't going to do it!

I, too, have the same fears and concerns... so I've never really attempted to root the phone nor tried to. I guess I just like it the way it is.

My reasoning for wanting to root it, is so I can put the Desire rom on the device. I really enjoy the HTC Sense and android. The stock android on the Nexus One is fantastic I agree just IMO missing the Sense UI.
Alright guys for over a year now I have been trying to decide if I should root. I have seen some positives about rooting but not a good enough breakdown to want to jump on board. Now that the new update is rolling out, I'm again at this crossroad. So I ask, what advantages are there to rooting? What do I gain over sticking to stock? Overall, just convince me why I should root and go to cyanogen...thanks in advance

1) Tethering
2) Titanium Bakup to backup apps
3) Notification power widgets (many ROMs have them now)
4) AdFree to block ads!
5) Faster / Better battery life (overclock/underlock/undervolt/etc.)
6) Nandroid Backups
7) No bloatware
8) Screenshots (minor, but some like it)
9) Blazing fast updates (CM7 been up with 2.3 since January)
These are basic for all custom ROMs, but there is just the utter speed and smoothness to CM7 especially, and has tons of great features over stock baked right into the ROM.
If you root, you don't have to go to CyanogenMod. Tons of people do because it really is an awesome AOSP ROM, but there are other choices too. Rooting gives you that choice. I personally just run CM7 because its so great, I have flashed a lot of ROMs and not found anything better.
I just use the stock GB rom with the Virtuous V4 kernel so I can OC. Does everything I need. Use Titanium to freeze a few things and its very fast.
If rooting and s-offing the phone was not a 5 min process I would say ya you need a big ass breakdown. Dude its so simple. Just do it. And even if you don't like it go back to stock. Just try it!

5 minute job? I had a (half arsed) crack once... Installing the developer tools, downgrading, risking f%@#ing up and temporarily bricking your phone. Good few hours work at best by the time you include the pages of reading you need to do.
I'd love to root, but until there is a 5 minute solution it just doesn't seem worth it...

If he's on a G2 and on 2.2 the root really does only take about 15min start to finish. If he's on a DZ and has to downgrade etc. it can take much longer of course. On top of that, even if it takes an hour to do, its definitely worth everything it gets you.

Took a while to get root only because I have a crap sd card but it was definitely worth it!
Don't bother with the guides in the dev section, follow the wiki guide and it will be easy.
Basically its:
- Get MiniADB which it much easier to work with
- Follow wiki guide.
Done.
If you wait for a 1 click solution you learn nothing. At least you learn how to use ADB and the basic commands because you will need them when you change roms/kernels/radios.
Did you really ask this question on xda?! On top of that, post it in general?

The choice to root is yours and yours alone. I will say this, after having a rooted phone, I could never go back to a stock phone.

I did my dz in 15 mins, but I have done it 3 times. So I all ready have all the files downloaded. If you are doing it using adb depending on your internet connection downloading the android sdk can take a very long time. There is a way to do it with out adb (check the dev section) which should take about 1 hour including the time it takes to read the guide a few times and make sure everyting you need is set up correctly.

I called customer service just a minute ago and they told me they would send me a new Nexus that will get here and in about two days, and after that I ship mine back to them. Should I return it to stock or is Google usually pretty cool about this? Has anyone else done this?
I would go back to stock. Its pretty simple at at least with wugfreshs toolkit. Which is something I usually stay away from but it was the simplest way especially since I just got mine.

Yeah, I usually stay away from toolkits, at least when it comes to actually rooting the device. But, I'll try that! Thanks for the fast response.

Version 2.0 is fine. I am still using it. Once you installed the toolkit on your pc, you should be good to go as the software is self explanatory, and it also explains everything right there and then. Jsut do numbers 1 to 7 ( I skip no. 2 though)
Only thing to note is you need to enable USB debugging on your Nexus 7, and sometimes you need to enable PTP instead of MTP. You can easily switch/change the setting after you connected your Nexus to the pc by opening the app drawer and clicking the necessary box.
Good luck
Not seen the need to root mine yet, all of our droid phones are rooted & running custom tons, so I do know the benefits of rooting, CWM, custom roms etc.

Do not... I repeat do not use a toolkit. Those are only helpful IF AND WHEN YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING.
Do it the manual way, the same way it is for all nexi.
Also there is no best ROM... that's for you to decide yourself no one can tell you ehat you'll think the best ROM will be.

I doubt there's a circumstance under which I'd say no. Even if you never use a custom rom/kernel (which, yes, there are some good ones out there) there's still adblock, titanium backup, betterbatterystats, etc.
I used glazed rom + motley kernel. paranoid android is also another common recommendation, due to being able to change the sizes of each app.

I like to use WugFresh's Nexus Root Toolkit just as a simplified installer for the utilities without needing the entire android SDK. The advanced tools in the NRT provide a quick ADB shell, as well as version checking, hash checking, and driver installations. I think that cuts a lot of step out, and I'm happy to see WugFresh is continuing his project to support Nexus devices in a way that Google hasn't. They should hire him.

Yeah well if someone relies on toolkits only, and say something goes wrong.. They have no idea how to fix it, then they are here trying to get people to fix it... Not every one is an Android nerd but come on, these are nexus devices.. If you do not know what you're doing, you shouldn't be messing with and modifying your device. Just because I can take my toaster apart, doesn't mean I should.. Or just because I can modify my car doesn't mean I should do it myself.. You wouldn't go messing around in your cars engine if you didn't know what you were doing, so then why is ok to mess with your phone when you have no clue what you're doing?
I do not flash roms or kernels anymore, I'm not even rooted nor is my bootloader unlocked. People do not take the time to read and learn how to do things for themselves.. They expect to be hand held and spoon fed. How did I learn? By screwing up my device and reading how to fix it and doing the leg work myself..Not coming here and expecting people to basically be my help desk. I'm very much a supporter of learning by your own mistakes and learning how to fix them.. If you don't then you'll never learn anything.
I've been on xda for coming on 5 years now. The Nexus sections always had more experienced and seasoned users.. Now look at these sections, so many clueless people who need how-to videos and step by step instructions. They ask and post the silliest things.. The lack of knowledge is now at an all time high and it's because people do not want to learn, they just want instant gratification, their hand held and everything made easy for them.. It hurts my head reading some of these threads.. Never has the moron factor been so high in nexus sections . This use to be a forum for developers by developers, now it seems like more and more developers are leaving (just look at older nexus development sections how busy they were compared to more recent ones) now xda is more of a end-user community. There is nothing wrong with not knowing something, but at least take the initiative to learn, why should I take my time to learn and put in the work and then just spoon feed it to someone else? No F that.. If I put in the work, then so should they..
Sorry.. That's been building up for quite sometime.. I kinda started with one thought and ran off in another direction.. It wasn't directed to you.. Lol just saying..

I'm not sure what the story is. NRT worked fine for me when I was on the "I" release but once I updated to L and M it has the present issues. I tried reflashing back to "I" but it still wasn't working properly. I imagine these things will get sorted out soon enough. I unlocked the bootloader with NRT when I was on "I" and have not heard any issues with that, so I assume that portion of the tool is still working fine. Really the only problem is busybox not installing, as you can get around the other issues by manually flashing TWRP with the advanced utilities.
I used this NRT to root my Nexus 5X. While everything went smoothly, the only thing that sorta went "wrong" was after flashing TWRP, it would boot back to bootloader and try to flash (and fail) the stock recovery. Which.... Made no damn sense at all, lol. So I would have to reroot and reflash TWRP, and unplug the cable as soon as that was done.

Don't use flash to stock+unroot on this.
It formatted my drive to 16 GB instead when I have a 32 GB phone.
How do I reclaim my space?
Edit - I used TWRP
As always... Factory reset

I played with it, tried root, went back. The two things that suck are you still can't make /system into r/w, which means you can't do things like add AdAway. Also it's got the dumb "we think you broke it" boot splash screen (?? It's a Nexus! I can't play if I want?). The last Nexus I had, the Dec 2011 "Galaxy Nexus" was clean after root other than small unlock image, and the pre-M Androids allowed r/w on /system. Fortunately, the stock phone and OS are pretty great.
I haven't had any of these problems. Call me crazy, I also use a browser when connecting to the internet and a car when going to the grocery store. And I use XDA when I want to know the best way to do something on my devices.
Pioneers create tools. Practitioners use tools. Beginners watch videos of people using tools. All that sounds fine, to me.
