I called customer service just a minute ago and they told me they would send me a new Nexus that will get here and in about two days, and after that I ship mine back to them. Should I return it to stock or is Google usually pretty cool about this? Has anyone else done this?
I would go back to stock. Its pretty simple at at least with wugfreshs toolkit. Which is something I usually stay away from but it was the simplest way especially since I just got mine.

Yeah, I usually stay away from toolkits, at least when it comes to actually rooting the device. But, I'll try that! Thanks for the fast response.

No problem was a breeze with the toolkit.

Video you can use. Used this as a refrence. But the extra steps he takes for downloading the .tgz wasn't necessary for my case.

Hello all I got my first Nexus One yesterday I know I should root it but I've never dropped the cash I did for a device I know there is a chance of a brick. I need to let the newness wear off.
But the purpose of this post is any suggestions on specific apps for the Nexus I can try out in the market. There are some that Ive read in this forum some but maybe some were left out.
Thanks in advance.
Just sayin, but the only real chance of a brick is to let your battery die or pull it while flashing the radio. (to my understanding)
try the XDADevelopers app, it's pretty nifty.
done and done has anyone ported swype to nexus yet

Thank you for these
Just make sure your battery is charged, you probably won't brick this phone unless your trying to.
While there's not much of a chance for bricking, it supposedly does void your warranty. Some people have been able to get work done even after unlocking though.
With that said, I thought the same thing and thought I would wait about a month before I unlocked it, but that lasted about 2 days lol.
I unlocked it and flashed Cyan's ROM and haven't looked back since.

If you didn't engrave it, don't root it yet. Use it for a week or two, make sure there's no reason to return/replace it due to some defect. If there is no reason, then root it =)
My only 2 reasons for rooting it are: WiFi tethering and Flashlight. Imo, there are no other real reasons to do it, stock rom is extremely well done and I didn't notice much difference between it and Cyan.
Just root it..you'll truly own your phone then. Unless you don't know how to read and follow instructions properly or are just plain incompetent..which I doubt you are since you found this forum~ the chances of bricking are low.
Root it and never look back.
Nah, give it a few days to let any hardware issues make themselves known, then root it if your of a mind.
If you don't root it, all you are going to be able to think about is rooting it. I say use it for a few days to make sure all the hardware is good and go for it. I think I lasted about 36 hours before giving in and I told myself that I wasn't going to do it!

I, too, have the same fears and concerns... so I've never really attempted to root the phone nor tried to. I guess I just like it the way it is.

My reasoning for wanting to root it, is so I can put the Desire rom on the device. I really enjoy the HTC Sense and android. The stock android on the Nexus One is fantastic I agree just IMO missing the Sense UI.
I have had my Nexus 7 for some time now and it has always worked flawlessly, until today that is. I last used it on Wednesday and it was OK. I didn't use it at all yesterday but when I tried to use it today .......no go. I keep it in one of those cases with the magnetic closure when I opened it the pad was off. I turned it on and after a longer time than usual I got the Google sign and after a very short time the Nexus logo, the multicoloured X and the light were going round it as usual. That is as for as it went, I thought maybe the battery was low so I conected the charger but there were no changes. I tried to turn the pad of to know avail. After some time I managed to turn it off but it restarted itself straight away.Eventualy I managed to turn it off and stay off by pressing and holding the power and volume up buttons. I left it like that for some time and then turned it on again with the same result as earlier.
Sorry if this has been a bit long winded but I thought it best to give all the facts I could to stop anyone good enough to help from having to ask questions and the wait for a reply.
Any help anyone can give will be much appreciated, oh I do miss my little 7.
Is it stock? Try holding the power button for about 30 seconds that is a hard reset.

Ouch.
Everyone hates bricks, semi or full.
I suppose now would be a good opportunity to root it and install a recovery (I recommend TWRP) ? This would completely unbrick your device. The downside is that you will lose ALL data.
I can't think of any way to help that isn't all ready on this thread, that doesn't involve data loss. Sorry :S
If you don't want root, but don't mind data loss, you could try restoring factory image (though it is as easy to root, and I would recommend doing so)
Good luck
Many thanks for that Fallon9111 It looks to me as if root is going to be the way for me to go.
I have had PC,s Smartpgones and two or three tablets and have never rooted any of them.exept one and that one was made possible for me to do as I was given complete foolproof, one sylable instructions. I bet you can guess you and anyone else who reads this what's coming next, can you or somebody please give me idiot proof instuctions to root my 7.Please..

Did you manage to root yet?
If you are still stuck on rooting, there are many good tuts on xda, and rooting nexus's is the easiest
Windows method I recommend: WUGS
Other: android sdk (command line)
To be honest, I found the command line method on linux the easiest
Im putting my N10 up for sale as I'm not using it much in favor of my smaller N7. Been browsing the various threads to see which is the best way to restore it back to factory stock condition un-rooted and with bootloader relocked.
Should I use the Nexus root toolkit or is there an ruu I can download and run?

Some users simply hate toolkits while others love it... I for myself like it, I think they are useful, however the problem comes when there's a thing you need and a toolkit doesn't support it, so you have to do it manually.
To OP, I never used that toolkit, but if it can install a factory ROM and lock the bootloader you will be able to use it .

Can anyone please help me? Today I got my 6P and decided to try and root it. Now it wont get out of the boot animation and ADB devices no longer lists my phone. Is there a chat room or walk through for fixing this? I'm in a pretty large amount of mental agony over this. I just want stock back and will never fiddle again. Promise.

How did you root it? If you follow my guide you'll have no problems.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/general/guides-how-to-guides-beginners-t3206928
You'll need to start from scratch though so follow the directions in section 9 first, that'll take your phone back to stock.
I used the Nexus Root Toolkit I found because I figured I'm a novice, this will do it for me. Hah! Nope. Also tried to restore it that way. No go, surprising no one at this point.
Ok. So i had the wrong file, because again, I'm a moron and it has been proven. Looks like things are going back to stock ok now. <3 :crying: so happy

A word of advice: don't use toolkits. While they may seem helpful for a novice like yourself, they'll keep you at a novice level because they allow you to do things to your device without actually knowing what's going on. This prevents you from doing any learning and advancing. Take the time to learn how to use fastboot and you'll see it isn't as daunting as you may think, plus you'll get great satisfaction from doing these things yourself. Have a look at my guide, and if you have any questions myself and others are there to help.
Three mornings ago I woke up to find wifi couldn't start on my phone. Nothing I tried fixed it. It's a hardware issue. Verizon refused to fix it because I admitted it was rooted. The local repair shop is afraid of breaking the digitizer if they take it apart and besides, who knows what's wrong?
This is my last straw with Verizon. I have signed up with T-Mobile. My replacement Note 4 will be here today or tomorrow. I really loved this community. Yall are a great bunch of guys and I will miss you. But I refuse to take any more of Verizon's crap. I'll drop in to say Hi from time to time but for now I have to learn about the T-Mobile development community. Later.
Noooo. This is bitter sweet because you will enjoy yourself with all the Tmobile development. Frankly any Note 4 variant besides Verizon and AT&T you'll be happy. Good luck man and thanks for all your help.

Sorry to hear you're leaving. You've been a great help to a lot of us. I share your feelings toward Verizon, they are just too big to care. So go on.... have some fun with the new toy....there's so much development over there... I'm actually over in the note4 snapdragon side more recently because I'm running all other than Verizon MM stuff. Anyways thanks Stuey for your contributions and help!

I'd be happy to do some low-level troubleshooting with you. That's a strange piece of hardware to fail, one that isn't very common. I think there might be something else going on.

Ok. I reset it back to the condition it was when I got it. I odin'd the ANI1 modem and the ANJ5 stock restore. I don't know what else to do.
I don't have the new phone yet. Probably tomorrow evening or Monday. If I can fix it and don't decide to cancel TMo I could sell it. It shows a little wear around the USB port but other than that it's totally scratch free. It was always in an Otterbox case.
But I'd love to keep using it.

Just flash the full PBA1 tar first. Don't flash different bits and pieces, that could cause issues here.. Here's the link: Download

Isn't that going to overwrite the Dev Ed bootloader? I guess that's ok though because it's useless as a Developer Edition anyway right? And then I can do the unlock procedure.
It failed. It wants me to do the Verizon Software Repair Assistant. It probably failed because of the hardware issue right?
Update: On the second try it flashed and finished booting up. There were only 22 apps to optimize. Wifi still doesn't work. It did lose developer mode.

We'll get DE back after you are stable. Uninstall Verizon Software Repair Assistant and Kies if you have it. To me, it looks like a USB/Driver/Software conflict going on preventing a successful flash. Try a different computer, and a different USB cable. Something is interrupting the write process.
I don't have access to another computer. Sometimes this computer does act up. That's M$ and their upgrade to W10 for you. Maybe after a fresh reboot?
I don't have the other stuff.
Update: Maybe I can borrow a computer. I don't know when though. I'll look into it.

I flashed a ton of stuff through Odin and TWRP both. Everything seemed to flash correctly with the same result every time. Wifi wouldn't work. I can't help but think it's hardware. I think it baked this jumper wire that's right between the battery and the Wifi til it broke. Too many times heating it up by optimizing apps.
