[N00B] I have an idea for downgrade - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Ok, so I have an idea to like downgrade from mk2 or mf3... I am a noob to i337, so please explain to me WHY I can't do this before flaming :C
So we obv can't flash because of Samsung's locked bootloader and knox and stuff, but what if we were to completely wipe our phone. Not like a regular "I'ma factory reset my brick yo!" No no no, I mean completely getting rid of EVERYTHING. Modem, kernel, everything to make it as if you haven't gotten a single flash of ANYTHING on your phone, as if your phone is just getting it's software installed. THEN, we flash a MDL and everything for 4.1.2, or practically whatever came before mf3 (since my phone was shipped with that, I never really took the time to research what came before so I'm not sure what version is before). So, I'm thinking maybe someone has actually tried this, and thinking someone has not... Just want to find out if you can, and if you can't, why not.
Thanks
P.S: Wasn't sure whether to post in General or Q&A, so I posted it here

Because when your phone updated to mf3 or later it blows a q fuse that makes it impossible. It's beyond software. It's a hardware issue

From what I've read, it's a piece of hardware that only counts up. It is checked when attempting to flash old bootloaders.

This seems like a good place to ask this question: does flashing 4.3 MK2 blow another qfuse? And if we're already on MF3, would you recommend waiting to update and not blowing that qfuse in case that might be the key to regaining access to custom recovery? Or are we doomed forever already and I should just go ahead and take the update?

MK2 does trip it, so no MF3 downgrade. Whether or not you upgrade is really up to you: progress is not coming too quickly and unless Samsung patched a security hole we haven't even found yet in the boot loader there's a chance any MF3 exploit may carry over. I would recommend MF3 personally since you can still use Safestrap for some freedom and it'll be less difficult since they won't have Knox to work around.

Hmmm... so it's a piece of hardware huh... would it be possible to remove this hardware? I took apart my S3 when the screen broke to see what was going on internally so if I'm correct, you can take apart the S4, right?
EDIT : Then again, that hardware could be pretty itty bitty...

I think it would be better for someone to hack the firmware and alter it to make it "think" it has checked this piece of hardware and return a favorable response.
However, i am no developer...

Hmmmm I've wanted to be a dev for quite some time and I am only 14... However I did do a little noob java scripting for irc chats back when I was like 10, so if you know anyone willing to teach me the basics and give me the structure to adb and coding for android and all that, that'd be great

That doesn't help

I still have a S4, and I never did the update, so I can flash roms, but do as I am fixing to do, I am fixing to sell the wifes S4 MF3, you can still get $500-$600 and get a T-Mobile Note 3.....there are people who know nothing of flashing roms that will pay that price....quit wasting time looking for a solution as the devs that were working on it moved on to different devices....you can bet that there will be no fix for this in the near future.....keep in mind that this is NO software problem.

CURRENTLY CHATTING WITH SAMSUNG (SORRY FOR CAPS JUST SO EXCITED ) This is what they said just now after I asked about an eFuse/qFuse. Tell me if this is invalid!!!
******: As of now, I would like to inform you that, eFuse is not available in S4 mobile.
This is what the rep has said so far for the i337, will be updating further soon
UPDATE BEFORE POST : I had to ask them this, as I am a newbie and I didn't want to put the burden on you guys.
Visitor: Thank you very much. If you don't mind, is there a difference between qFuse and eFuse?
******: You are welcome. I wish I could have helped you in this regard. However we in live chat have information regarding the US model devices trouble shooting only.
So I guess this could mean they aren't completely suited for these types of Q&A's? Either way, rumors did spread about eFuse stuff being involved but I was just told officially that this was incorrect. Please tell me if I am wrong? Or I might have to start a new thread on this, rather.

Keep in mind the T-Mobile Note 3, N900T gets really bad LTE reception when using an AT&T sim. In places that had a -90dbm LTE signal on the S4 wouldn't even connect to LTE on the N900T for me. The device also got really warm when it was connected to LTE. I don't know if that's because the N900T isn't optimized for band 17, or just a way for them to discourage people from using AT&T.
Developers for the S4 have not called it quits. They are currently working on bringing safestrap to the latest MK2 update.

I'm really just wasting my time here because actually "searching" for any of the stuff in this thread would have provided answers, but I guess posting the information 1001 times is no different than the 1000 times it's already been posted.
A q-fuse involves hardware on some level, an e-fuse is software related. The AT&T S4 used q-fuses to increment firmware boot-loaders. It was incremented between MDL and MF3. It was incremented again between MF3 and MJ6. And it was increased again between MJ6 and MK2. When it is incremented, YOU CAN NOT GO BACK TO A PREVIOUS FIRMWARE...PERIOD! You can not simply change the information in aboot. Any changes invalidate Samsung's signature and without their encrypted key, a file CAN NOT be resigned.

I'm very much sorry for that. However, do not misinterpret me when I say this but, your post was unnecessary as someone already said qFuse was on a hardware level. I dedicated a bunch of today to S4 and the I337 model specifically. Tomorrow or Wednesday is when I'll be sending some PMs to Devs
Basically, thread is over with. Thanks everyone

New S4

I was going to upgrade tomorrow. The guy at the store said they got a shipment of S4s two days ago. Does anyone know if the devices are shipping with MF3 yet? Anyone who got a new one recently have any info?
Also, if it doesn't have MF3, do I have to do anything to keep it from installing? I saw some people saying not to use the phone til I'm home and can root it and freeze the update app. They claim the upgrade will automatically happen without my consent. Other people claim the upgrade requires user approval.
Thanks guys, I really want root so this is a deal breaker for me The guy at the store assured me all phones get updates when I asked if they were up to date. I didn't want to elaborate I didn't want that though haha.

If you are fortunate enough to get an S4 with AMDL firmware, then I'd root it and freeze the AT&T updater with Titanium Backup. Keep in mind, you'll probably want to flash a custom rom because the stock AT&T software is so laggy it almost makes the device unusable.

I don't think it can automatically update unless you agree to it. But be careful with the very clueless at&t reps, because they might actually update your phone for you.
Check the box. It will show the firmware revision number right on it. I recently got my replacement through Asurion, and it was MDL.
And yeah, like the others said, don't let him/her update the phone. They may wish to place test calls, but as soon as you have it in-hand, just turn off Mobile Data and the WiFi. You don't need those to place test calls.
Thanks. I have 14 days to bring it back even if things go horribly wrong. However, I am trading in my Infuse which I won't be able to get back. So I'm not sure what I'd do if I had to go down that road.

Correct. MDL and MDB are fine, but if your on MDB I am not sure if the update for MDL will come through. MDB was absolutely horrible, beyond horrible actually. Everything lagged, everything was choppy, and the modem sucked. MDL was an improvement, but nothing drastic. I hear MF3 is really good, it just kills root and loki.

It is possible to manually use Odin to get up to MDL version. Let it be known that the MF3 patch will check to be sure you are on MDL at least, so I can't see that they would pull that OTA any time soon.
As a last resort, I have a copy of the MDL update that you could theoretically just flash with a custom recovery.
ROM Suggestions? I'm prepping for tomorrow's surgery. Speed would be number one priority. Also I like lockscreen clock and % battery in the top bar. Other than that, I'm not picky.
I eyeballed goldeneye but it doesn't seem to have % battery, and it retains TW, which most people seem to dislike?
Be wary of speed. It's the enemy and number one culprit of many problems here on xda. If you're device is running MDL, simply make sure it is charged and pull the sim. Then begin your rooting, etc. Check out the I337 guide in my signature. All steps are important.
Touchwiz roms are in Android development, aosp roms are in original Android development. Cheers

If you are on the AT&T S4 that has been updated to MF3 we will have to wait until a bootloader exploit is found. There is NO ETA for this and it may take a while... maybe never. Just keep an eye on one of our many bootloader threads and pledge to pay the dev if you want to help motivate.

Thanks for that information. That is a bummer to hear the realistic possibility that it may never come. I guess I would be extremely bummed as rooting is the main reason I came to Android and bought the S4. I was naive in the sense I thought all S4 were the same. Little did I know there was so many variations. I even came to the forums before I bought it but everything seemed like a foreign language coming from iOS.
Any idea who I might be able to talk to to Pledge some cash to see that it gets worked on?
And also is there any way to see a MOD about this captcha restriction lol!

Thanks for all that info. I am an idiot honestly that's all that can be said. I should have done a little more research before I made a purchase. I traded my iPhone 5 with a little cash on top for a brand new Galaxy S4 on AT&T (My carrier) had I known all of this before I would have searched Craigslist for a T-Mobile version and then sim unlocked it for AT&T...
Guess I learned my lesson, I really wish I could afford to go buy a T-Mobile S4 too but they sell for like $500-$600 out of contract.... Just can't do it and I am stuck with AT&T right now. You can install a lot of mods which will archive a lot of the same things as a custom rom. You can remove bloat, theme, add things... it is pretty awesome. See the development sections and the themes and app sections to see all the awesome stuff. Some people always stay with stock and just add mods

Yeah, thanks for clarifying, I should also let the OP know I have the S4 Active which has the ability to ODIN back to stock if something goes wrong. I do not know if you will have that pleasure so think twice and read before trying anything
I have decided I probably won't take advantage of the root until I can safely make a recovery. I actually posted a $25.00 pledge (I know it isn't much) towards finding a fix for newer users of the S4. People who have to warranty their phones will likely have the update installed.

That's probably a good choice and you can enjoy the S4 i337 without doing anything, it is a great phone.
Of course, rooting -basic rooting using the new technique for the MF3 rom-- seems to work well enough for many so far. So please don't view it as jumping off a cliff and hoping to find a vine on the way down or something so bleak.
For your model, which does not currently have as many recovery options as the earlier MDL versions, it certainly pays to be careful and also to understand your options for return or exchange if you do muck up the phone. The trick is to understand the specific risks up front. In this case, what can go wrong in the rooting process and how often does it seem to occur.
Read the XDA thread on this new rooting exploit for MF3 and see exactly what others did to get root without ruining their phone -and do only and exactly the steps that have worked for others. The rooting process takes only a couple of minutes --but so does bricking your phone when it rooting is done incorrectly.
The differences between success and failure are:
1. How much you understand of the procedure?
2. How much you have prepared in advance for what you are doing and trying to accomplish? and
3. How carefully and patiently are you doing each and every step of the process?
I've rooted several phones and tablets and been fortunate to get it right most of the time, or to be able to recover when I did not get it right. Unfortunately, in your case it appears that you need to get it right the first time for rooting, and many many folks have. So while this is very different from the iPhone "click on this site and you're jailbroken" approach, it is not low-percentage surgery either :good::good::fingers-crossed: So, I'd recommend that you continue to read up on that new root technique for MF3:
-- read to see how it is being accepted, what kind of feedback folks have and also
-- how safe/or comfortable folks seem to be in using it. and
-- what problems have come from trying it -bricks? soft bricks? recoverable or not?
I've read the original post (OP) on the exploit, but not all the information is in the one thread.. I am sure there are several threads that echo this development. . . Might have even more information too. After, that you will know if you want to try the rooting step. Or not.
Good Luck!
P.S.
- While root does not sound as valuable as being able to switch roms and use full customizations, it does provide quite a bit. For example: you can add (root-requiring) apps like "Titanium Backup" (which not only backsup all of your programs and data, but also can "freeze" programs that are useless and running in the background when you don't want them to do so!) Or Greenify, which has the same functionality for dealing with unwanted apps (better actually!) and apps like Cerberus to help you keep track of your phone or find it if lost.
- Rooting to add these types of add ons, without fiddling with some of the more invasive mods that others have already warned about in the other posts, may be acceptable middle ground for you -it does provide customizations for your phone without stretching the safe use limits very far.
Take your time. . . keep reading and move at your own pace. It's hard to come here, start reading and simply "get it" on first bounce. . .It's just a shame that your friend with the older S4 didn't provide a couple of hints or tips about which versions to by ("buy the red ones"... :laugh so you could have picked up one that is easily customizable. . .(of course if you are still in the 14 day window you might go back and try to exchange for another one and look for a MDL version -according to some posts they seem to be the red ones that no one wanted to buy early on . . . . hmm
Good Luck!

That's probably a good choice and you can enjoy the S4 i337 without doing anything, it is a great phone.
Of course, rooting -basic rooting my upgradeusing the new technique for the MF3 rom-- seems to work well enough for many so far.

Well my Galaxy S4 on MF3 I actually bought on craigslist so the only exchange options are through the manufacturer. What I ended up doing was going to AT&T and using my upgrade to buy another S4 I just told the sales Representative to look on the side of the box for MDL software version or I was not going to upgrade. He was happy to make the sale. Now I have two s4

[Q] MF3 bricked, question about 4.3

so I have a bricked MF3 build.
I've read up and down, and at this point it can't be fixed. bootloader locked, etc.
I had an idea of flashing the 4.3 leak onto the S4 in hopes of fixing the /system/ partition since only one file is messed up that is causing the phone to bootloop.
if I could locate the 4.3 leak -- will it fix my soft-brick?
hypothetically speaking it should, right?
all directions that speak of flashing the file ask that the phone be ON the MF3 baseband.
is the odin file for JWR66V on the i337 signed so that I could flash it in Odin and get my phone working again?
sounds like it should work, please any input?
Nope. MF3 baseband is the modem needed. That can be flashed to MDL. The MF3 OTA completely locks your bootloaders... You're screwed.

Needed for what? graydiggy, please fix that partial sentence "That can be flashed to MDL."
Solidus636 might be screwed like you say, but your answer leaves me wondering why.
That is not a partial sentence. OP cannot flash anything on the MF3 firmware update.
The MF3 baseband can be separately flashed onto MDL. At that point, one would be able to flash 4.3.
Since there is no way to flash using MF3, OP goofed.

Thank you for the clarification.
Why are these people that took the OTA MF3 update from AT&T trying to flash in the first place?
How are they getting root or a recovery? It makes no sense to me.
Solidus636? What did you do (please include details) how did you do it? It would be helpful for everyone to learn what not to do.
We are able to get root with no issues. Just no recovery.
Why? People don't read. They don't care that they could brick a $650 phone. They deserve it.

Thanks, I read up on getting root for MF3 OTA and it says right up front CAUTION THERE IS NO RECOVERY
and rooting looks like it's more complex, I remember the Android Debug Bridge, and I'm glad I was able to get in early with motochopper and then casual and I'm pleased with the GoldenEye Rom. Just a tap and a swipe bar in the TWRP recovery. I see how I dodged a bullet back in June when I froze AT&T Update service with Titanium Backup. I'm lucky. And it took me a long time to grasp all the terminology and what the difference is between root and getting a custom recovery, and I'm sure that it's not the amount of reading one does, but rather comprehension. That's why when I print in here I try not to leave anything out.
Whiz kids like yourself forget what it's like to wonder if there is a difference between installing a zip or flashing one and could care less on articulating the details you take for granted.
There's not a fix in the world for solidus636's handset cuz he blew the E fuse huh? Not sure what that is and barely understood it when I read about it.
I loathe AT&T. Now they locked the bootloader. What a bunch of creeps. I almost didn't get the S4 because of the shrunken SIM but I found an adapter so I can light up all those old phones in my gun safe. It's how I roll. I would never buy a handset you couldn't pull the battery on. And everytime I see a new connector plug I go on a rant about UL listed and deregulation. Instead of making a one size fits all battery, almost every device has a different shape size and fit.
Ok all done complaining now. Beg pardon for bending your ear. I think you like it tho, and will find something to be smart alec about.

i Rooted the phone.
then i messed with the /framwork-res.apk and accidentally renamed it to /framework-res.apk.bak and now there is NO framework-res.apk file inside /system/framework/ meaning i am soft-bricked until I can get the MF3 Odin file or a file higher than that....
i also didn't accept the RSA keys to default to accept on my computer, meaning I can't access ADB it says OFFLINE. if I could access ADB this would've been an easy fix by renaming the framework-res.apk.bak file back to framework-res.apk, but I messed up:/

The only posts I have seen from you are trying to get people to file a class action lawsuit against AT&T and to start petitions. Why don't you either shut the hell up about it or do it yourself.
First:
AT&T does not have to provide unlocked bootloaders . Those are not open source. They can do whatever they damn well please with THEIR bootloaders. A lawsuit would be fruitless.
Second:
Stop trying to get people to do what you want. If you want it, do it yourself. If you are too lazy to do it, shut your mouth. You sit here and preach all this BS but are too lazy to even sign a petition that was linked to you. You act like you're 12. Only a kid would put forth so much talk but absolutely no action.
I will start reporting every post from you that has anything to do with you trying to get people to do what you want in regards to this topic, if i see one more. I and many others are tired of seeing it. You are spamming the forums with it.

This really did work, thanks! Only allows booting into the os and trying factory reset doesn't work but arty least I can use it again until a fix for mf3 is found.
Yup.. I fell right into that trap too... just happens when you think about it too much. Just be happy with your phone and live with it till a dev can make it better in the future.

[Q] Knox - Does it really matter?

YES! I've used the search until my head started to spin and got no real answer to this.
I've read and read about the "Knox thing" and that it trips the flag, and so did it on my phone when I did an upgrade.
How how does tripping the Knox affect my phone?
In what way does it change it?
I know, you have no warranty, but that is always a risk you have to take with any phone/hacking. That is my decision to take.
But any REAL implications? I tried to read and read up about it and I don't see the "thing" with it?
I read and read posts about how to not trip it so I really wonder if it does something that affects the phone in a negative sense?
Does it hinder me to have root and load custom roms?
Does it hinder me in side-loading things?
What does this damn flag really do with the phone???
I read that I can't downgrade my roms from 4.2.2 to an older version but then, why should I?
I want the newest, coolest, best roms that I can get here by the amazing devs!
When I had my HTC One X I had to register on HTC-Dev to get a key to unlock the phone, so I knew what I was doing.
I was breaking the warranty and I was willingly doing that because I wanted to have custom roms.
I like to hack around and I soft-bricked more phones and times then I can remember.
In the Samsung world there is/was the Triangle away since Samsung has the counter for how many times you flashed
(but it doesn't seem to affect the phone in anyway, as far as I have read or does it?). So you might have been a bit spoiled
If this is "just" about warranty then I read that some tripped it with a normal Kies upgrade so I doesn't seem perfect.
Please, enlighten me. I can't find any good answers on this.
As a matter of fact I actually will get a new S4 soon and I'm very curious what firmware it will contain?
And this is why - Off-topic (I tend to be that).
I got a post-anesthetic amnesia after a surgery. What they told me was that I tried to start up my phone but it didn't want too (BAD Foxdoggie! )
so I threw it in the wall 2 times and then I broke it in half when they forbid me to throw it anymore.
No recollection at all, but I wish I had since breaking a phone in 2 parts isn't something you do every day
The insurance company wanted me to send in the phone for repairs and it was in at least 512 parts.
Was quite fun to go to the store and ask them to send it to service.
Btw, keep away from the glass if it breaks! It gets razor sharp. The next day I have to pull out micro-parts from my hands that was lodged in the skin and my hands was cut all over, but then I'm good with a scalpel
So again, can someone please explain to me the negative implications of Knox?
If there are anything that will make my phone function in worse way I will make a formal complaint to Samsung here in Sweden since
I didn't buy a car to find that after a routine service, suddenly had the speed limited to 70 km/h...
I talked to my phone-company and they didn't knew what Knox was? AT ALL.
He just told me to use Triangle Away if it would break (or the same if I would jail-break my iPhone)!
So you even get instructions on what to do to make it "look" ok from your own provider since they are so well aware that people hack/root their phones.
Someone said in a post that only 1% root/jailbreak. I call that bull. But I think that more people jailbreak their iPhones then root their Androids.
But 1%? Just the fact that your cell-provider informs you how to "restore" your phone (and even asked me what rom I'm using!?!).
So maybe hard-core freaks are 1% but "normal" rooters/jailbreakers are way way way more.
It's the same with internet. Right now I have 500 Mbit and do the provider REALLY think I use that to browse Facebook faster?
So they all play a double game. At least in Sweden but I think that is quite universal?
This is my first Samsung. I'm a HTC-guy and if this Knox hinders me while other companies open up theirs instead, it will be my last.
I got a great deal on this phone and thought that since Samsung has the largest base it would be nice to see the awsome devs here.
And WOW. I was not wrong
Btw, Foxie, I love your rom, but it's just not post-surgery safe. You should add that as a warning

I just continued here to avoid comments about my sight... :cyclops:
(I did, didn't had a clear answer. Asked here. Wooboo. Will never do that again. Promise. )
KNOX is a security feature enabled by Samsung for corporate things. Does a normal end user need it probably not and should be an option. However Samsugn decided to roll it out to all phones regardless.
If you have a KNOX enabled handset, you can do as you please, root, install custom recovery, flash roms, flash kernels, however it will disable KNOX and will set the KNOX couneter to 0x1, once this is done you can not reverse it.
As an effect to warranty, it's probably country dependent. There is a warranty thread, some users have sent their phones in once KNOX has been tripped and phones have been repaired.

Not possible, you should have read up more before assuming it could be rooted..
Edit: Sorry, unless you have upgraded yourself, and not upgraded the bootloader. Which I'm guessing isn't the case here.
It's not that I was assuming it could be rooted, I expected at least some kind of weakness in it. I'm an engineering student, I've been taught that "It is only impossible until it is done." Unfortunately since I posted that the reading I've done on here about it.....You're absolutely right. I've decided to switch phones with my mom who just wants a stock phone so I'm giving her my S5 and buying another Android. But I upgraded in August without hearing of rooting, since then, I have soft-bricked, resoft-bricked and learned so much so fast with my old S3 on 4.4.2 that I think I understand a lot about the phone which means I'm just scratching the surface and know nothing hahaha so no worries, I know I'm still a noob, but I have not spoken yet because I've been reading instead. I just hoped a weak spot was missed. Now I'm swallowing my pride, admitting defeat and going back to an older Android version and doing it hopefully the right way
