A question regarding HD Movies - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there guys,
I just downloaded this .mkv extension movie from the net. I want to view it on my Note 3. Do I need to convert the file? If yes, then why? I mean, what is the problem if I transfer the 2.2 Gb file to the memory of my phone as it is.
The bit rate is something around 3000kbps I think. Isn't that normal? Do I really need to convert it? And if I do will there be any loss in quality?
Thanks for the help guys.

This. You may want to use HardWare+ or SoftWare decoding since .mkv's will likely be slightly out of sync with regular HardWare decoding.
.MKV is nice compression, but tough on battery life :/ I get about 16 hours of video with HW decoding, 12 hours with HW+ and only 10 with SW.

1080p video and 3rd party player don't work

I can't play the helicopter video nor any other 1080p video with MxPlayer or VLC.
Videos up to 720p work fine.
Only the Samsung player works with 1080p.
Anybody else?

ticking "hardware overlay" in developer options fixes it for me.
is there any downside?

BS Player and RockPlayer2 is good.
It has a very usable playlist with shuffle function that I need.
I also buy the pro version to support the developers.

XBMC works fine for me
Helicopter video
My I9500 came with helicopter video, but after some updates that desapears.
I have tried everything to get that again, but the only option until now was to download from youtube, but I don't think this have the same quality.
The youtube downloaded video (1080p) have only 61MB. I found a 720p mkv version, wich have 164MB. I think the 1080p version have 300+MB
Could someone kindly upload or send me a link to download the real Samsung helicopter video in 1080p wich came with Galaxy S4?
I'll be much appreciated.

How to play HD videos without lagging??

How can I play HD videos on my device without lagging??

Use mx player.

There are two common type of videos
1- avi encoded with xvid
This plays fine on galaxy y with mx player
2- mp4 encoded with x264
This will not play on stock based roms without lag
You can use CM7 roms and then enable hardware acceleration in mx player but due to limited hardware libs for this device it will not work for every video

Our screen resolution is only 240p. HD videos are 720p. It's possible to play it but very laggy.

Can i refer everyone to my post above
It doesn't matter what player you use - result will be the same
convert the video to avi encoded with xvid if you need to play on phone but you will need to use a pc to do it - would take days to convert via our phone

Does anyone read my posts
it's impossible to play high definition videos encoded with x264 on galaxy y without lag although some may play a little smoother on cm7 with hardware acceleration turned on in mx player but due to limited hardware libs it doesn't work for all videos
you can try every video player in the world it's not going to make any difference
the only video type galaxy y can play smoothly is avi encoded in xvid & non hd video eg low res mp4 not encoded with x264 3gp mpeg
so convert the video if you want to play on phone or see if there is an avi xvid alternative

Unsupported audio codec

Hi All. Im getting the above message and no sound when playing videos (.avi and .mkv) through the stock app. These same vids played fine on stock note 2 video app.
It works with 3rd party app.
Anyone else had this?

Surely somebody else has thos issue.
Sent from my SM-N9005 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
That would be because they removed the DTS codecs. License issue.
Diceplayer and VLC work.

Thanks for the reply. Guess no chance of getting round this in future? Ive been using VLC which does the job. But would like to make use of the stock functionality.

longshot but if it indeed a license issue is it possible to buy a license from digital theater systems?

I'm not sure about DTS mentioned above, but I encountered this issue with AC3. Personally I just recode audio and only audio, doesn't take long on fast computer, since for some strange reason I couldn't make VLC work on my Note3, which would be another option. I doubt Samsung will add codec support in the future updates.

MX player works - you can download the custom audio codec throught the player and install(needs to be unzipped) and then audio needs to be software decoded...

Best settings for ripping/converting videos for n3?

If I were to rip a DVD or convert an incompatible HD video (for example misfits series 4.mkv doesn't run audio for some reason) to play on the n3, (for which I use Xilisoft and will continue to do so unless recommended better software) what would be the optimal format, settings, aspect ratio, etc etc to get a great video experience?
Thanks

I would firstly say, what media player have you tried the .mkv file with? MX Player has never failed me so far.
As for optimal format... the screen resolution is 1920 x 1080 however it's capable of 4k, so really depends on your source quality.
I'd probably say h264 full HD max settings if you have the storage space

Also remember a .mkv file is just a container file. Just cause 1 doesn't work, doesn't mean all won't.

Thanks, MX player didnt work - i temporarily downloaded it as I do any time a file wont work, same problem, no sound.
MX Player is usually pretty reliable except IF a certain .mkv is encoded @ a poor or badly wrote CRF - try another one and see, or just extract the .mp4 from the .mkv container and it'll play OK with MX -- Or try updating codecs for it?

Poor gaming performance

So why is it that Note 3 is still so inferior in games compared to iOS, where most games run at stable 60FPS while they are a stuttering mess on Note 3. Check this video for example:
Is there any chance we will see improvements on that?
If rooted use wanam exposed -> boost mode

You will also have to consider that these games are not coded equally. So dont expect havong the same FPS with iOS all the time.
For gaming though I prefer using my iPad Air seems all apps run as a native app.
