Phoenix rom 9.0 no sound and random reboots GTi9500 - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone, to make a long story short I'm one of those damned souls that installed chainfire 3d on a non gingerbread device (yes I did not read the description properly but seriously, who is using gingerbread in 2013 and why hasn't the app been taken down from play store?) And pretty much did not find any help anuwhere on how to remove it short of going back to stock or installimg a custom rom.
I did not have backup of nand or anything because I did not plan on installing a custom rom, anyway I imstalled phoenix rom 9.0 and it's okay but I have NO SOUND whatsoever and phone reboots itself mostly when I try to edit something I'm typing with the cursor such as this parragraph.
I could not find a stock rom for my phone, i9500 factory unlocked artic blue, box says it is the model "for the americas" and has the letters UD.
There an ota update for phoenix rom 10.1...would fix my issues? Or will I have to install something else? I would prefer a custom rom that's as close to stock as possible and it has to be 4.3 because I can no longer go back to 4.2.2 it seems because a change of bootloader...

Just to clarify, I do know the chainfire3d thing is my fault and no one elses...

This doesn't even matter, all the devs have the official ota update before it comes out due to Google dropping the source before they actually push it out.
Way better to root, you'll have the updates faster that way.

IF you do only one thing, unlock the bootloader before getting lived in on the device. I am rocking stock rooted myself. I am just watching till after cm10.1 hits stable then Ill try some roms out
While I personally prefer stock (with modifications of course) on my N7, it is trivial to revert these devices back to stock, or any other ROM, if you want to. You don't even need to revert and upgrade - you could just download the latest FULL image and flash your device that way, skipping the update step altogether.
But if updates are your only concern, I imagine most of the ROM developers would incorporate the new version into their ROMs very soon after the OTA drops.

This.
Even if you don't run a custom rom initially, if the bootloader is unlocked, you can easily flash a custom recovery and rom later. The problem is that if you unlock all the internal storage gets wiped which is not the end of the world if you backup first but it's still a minor inconvenience.

paranoid is great, but depends what you like. I love it fit the tablet interface and customization options. stock 4.2 had a lot of the same customization built in, so it's awesome as well.
Sent from my Nexus 7
To me, its custom ROM or bust.
-Sent from Marino's Nexus 7-
Multi ROM
you may want to use Multi ROM.
Root your stock ROM.
Install Custom Recovery to install Multi ROM.
After installing Multi ROM, you may now install other or more ROMs inside.
Also, you have the option to auto-boot from stock ROM or from other ROM.
With that, you may access your stock ROM without removing your custom ROMs and vice versa.
Goodluck!
I unlocked and rooted my nexus 7 so that I could use otg cable---> a flash drive … I have extra storage now. Just download an app called stick mount an your all set...
Rooting should be the first thing you should do. As others said you can keep it stock if you want. Only difference is you get to install apps like titanium backup and file managers like root explorer. You also will have a custom recovery so you can backup your latest STABLE and smooth ROM so you can revert back if you ever run into trouble like the 4.2 OTA debacle.
As far as any maintenance and fixing issues... having root makes it a breeze as factory resets just mean in 10 minutes you are back in businesses, you just need redo your screens.
I took the plunge and after rooting I installed this: [EXPERIMENTAL] MultiROM v3
Now I'm running stock along with a few other ROMS, including Ubuntu.

Will cm 10.1.3 run with stock kernel on i9505?

Sent from my GT-I9505 using xda app-developers app
Of course not.
Can you suggest a kernel for me then mate as nobody wants to offer help and how is a guy supposed to learn with nobody to ask for help!?.. iv been looking at the chronic kernel but it seems the download is down at the minute
Sent from my GT-I9505 using xda app-developers app
Go ahead and flash cm. You don't need a custom kernel to run cm.
Because if you really want to learn, then you should read everything that you can. It takes time to understand everything.
Your question was if CM will run on a stock kernel? That's not possible, because the stock kernel doesn't support CM, it only supports Samsung roms.
But maybe you meant something else, but with that little effort to make a decent topic, it's impossible to help you further.
Im not new to rooting and fladhing i just seem to be struggling with the s4 i had a s3 i9300 and theres a wealth of information out there.. iv flashed 2 kernels to this s4 first was perseus it froze half way and phone rebooted after about 20 mins and had factory reset.. the second wad the chronic kernel this flashed as you would expect said sucessful and rebooted but wouldnt boot up both timmes i have triple checked i have the exact right files for my model number and both times i have had the right ones.. im desperate to rip all the samsung junk off it and get a proper android rom running.. just seems there is alot less information out there on the i9505 kernels and there compatibility than there was for my s3

You can't of double checked both times to see if kernel was compatible with your device because Perseus Kernel isn't and never will be compatible with the i9505. It is in the i9500 forum for a reason mate.
I suggest you take your time and READ as much as you can before you brick your phone.
If you are installing the latest kernel with the latest nightly you will have no issues, if you do, you're doing something wrong.
Older versions of CM are not compatible with new kernels due to display driver changes.
If you're wanting to run CM10.1 you'll need to find an older custom kernel. Just ask in that thread for recommendations
Please stop flashing and start reading dude.

Unroot after rom flash?

I'm interested in flashing the Google Play Edition Rom to my Galaxy S4 I9505.
The walk throughs seem simple enough.
I've noticed that you need to root your phone it install the roms. After install is it possible to Unroot your device once your running the GPE rom? As I know some apps such as banking apps don't run on rooted devices.
Thanks

If you need to lock ur phone back I mean unroot
Just use triangle away app then flash the stock odin version of your phone with specific region.
And you can get it from sammobile
Sent from my SM-N900 using Tapatalk
You don't necessarily have to run stock to run "unrooted", because even some custom ROMs come without superuser priviledges. If you're talking about a specific ROM that comes stock rooted (which most are), then you might be able to get by if you simply disallow root access to that specific program. Otherwise, there are apps like Hide My Root which are supposed to help you do what you're trying to accomplish. If I were you, I would set it up and try it out on the actual program(s) you're worried about. It would be a shame to stay on stock just because you weren't sure if it would work.
You can temporarily unroot your device using super user app itself.. check it out in settings
Thanks a lot for all of the replies, you've been a great help.
I've not got round to rooting or flashing the GPE rom yet might do it this week.
This is my 1st time doing this so a little uncertain on some little things.
I know about uprooting, getting TWRP running, using Odin, then flashing the ROM. but just read that the ROM needs a new modem file flashing. Can you do this through TWRP or as I'm thinking do it through Odin after I've got the ROM up and running?
Thanks again for all your responses guys, been a great help

[INDEX][Everything you need to know][All In One Guide]

Welcome to the note 3 forums. We welcome you as long as you do your job and search before making 1,000,000 new threads.
So,You just got your shiny new note 3 and dont know where to begin?
Well that's ok because, this is the all in one thread.
Lets begin
How do I Root?
That is the common question around here. Im going to simplify this.. Here you go
For 4.3
1.The best and safest way is this method by @evilpotatoman. It does require a little work but in return you do get root Here is the link for That,
2.Another method that is faster, but does not offer busybox with install, nor did it originate from XDA-forums is Here,
For 4.4 Or KitKat
You have to Go to My thread located
Here,
This does root KitKat and provides a custom ROM.
How Do I Install Custom Rom's
First What you should know is that our phone has a locked bootloader. This means that we can not boot kernels. But we still can flash custom rom's Thanks to @Hashcode
To install custom rom's on 4.3, Head over Here,
Another method That i originally created, but does not work as good as safestrap, could be found Here
If you are on KitKat, Then you could either install my KitKat rom or wait for safestrap to be updated.
What Do I Do If I Bricked My Phone? Or if it wont boot?
Well There are 2 methods to get you back to stock and running again.
To Restore back to Jellybean (4.3) Follow this Thread Here
To Restore back to KitKat (4.4.2) Follow this Thread Here
Why are Rom's Based off different Bases & Whats the difference?
A little basic intro
MJ5,MI9 & MI1 Are all 4.3 AT&T Bases
Ml2 Is an international 4.3 Base
MlG is a leaked AT&T 4.4.2 Base
Mj5 Is the latest 4.3 AT&T Base
Ml2 Is the latest international Base
The difference depends on what you need. Right now There are pro's and con's to all bases
Mj5
-Fast Data speeds
-Better indoor Signal
-No Bluetooth internet tethering
Ml2
-NO group messaging
-lower signal in areas
-slower data
-Does have Bluetooth internet tethering
Leaked Kitkat base (MIG)
-Extremely fast
-Newer modem with better signal & speeds
-Safestrap is not yet updated to work with kitkat (But you could still install my 4.4 ROM)
Why is my GPS Crappy and How do i fix it?
This issue is well known with our phone. The main reason is bad software coding.
To fix this issue Flash this fix made by me, in safestrap or manually push the files using root explorer.
4.3-Click Here
4.4-(Coming Soon)
What is "SafeStrap & Why do i have to use it?
Safestrap is our main method of flashing Rom's and could be found Here,
Always WIPE before flashing a new ROM or expect to receive errors. DON'T BE LAZY
Issues with safestrap
-Sometimes the storage is messed up and shows that you are using all your memory, when you really are not.If you use a different app to check, then you should see your real memory usage.
Where are all the kernels located?
Like i stated earlier, We don't have kernels yet, because of our locked bootloader
Where are all the Roms compatible with my phone?
All compatible and ready to install rom's could be found Here
There is currently NO AOSP,CM Based Rom's, So don't ask
What is KNOX and how does it effect me?
KNOX is basically made to **** us. But Samsung calls it security.
KNOX is removed from most custom Rom's. Knox does prevent root apps from working properly and should be removed asap.
How do I transfer My bookmarks from ROM to ROM?
Follow the guide i created Here
Im still working on a list of roms, and cool mods that are compatible with our phone. they will be located in the second post.Mods please sticky this thread
For me, to post mods and roms compatible with our phone
one more
Great information.
Thank you very much.
I have tried your KitKat 4.4.2. Glad to see it is rooted!
Now, it is easy to switch between MJ5 4.3 and MLG 4.4.2 through SafeStrap and Odin.
Wow very nice! Hopefully this will prove helpful.

Awesome work. Me personally Im waiting for SS to be updated but definitely keeping an eye out.
Im curious on one thing. When you discuss Knox and to 'remove it', would freezing this via TB server the same purpose? Also since youve had a go with 4.4, does Samsungs iteration of 4.4 still have the GPS issues or did they fix it? Just curious
Thanks!

Wanting to down grade back to JB rom from KITKAT v2
I Used to be on JB rom 4.3 And I really liked it. But I wanted to upgrade to to KitKat v2 because alot of people said they liked it. After I upgraded to KITKAT 4.4.2 I really did not enjoy it as much JB 2.6. I used to get 35000 score from Antutu Benchmark but now on V2 I get about 30000 score. And I thought the JB 2.6 was setup nicer. I dunno, but what I do know is that I would like to go back to JB 2.6 because I think it was a nicer piece of work. Anyone know where I can find the tutorial to downgrade back to JB 2.6? I thought I seen it before but I cant seem to find it. Thank you for your time.

Issue flashing 'Google' edition ROMs...

Hi, I'm probably being very idiotic atm but I can't think of any logical issues.
I'm using the Samsung Galaxy S4 i337.. I downgraded from NB1 to MK2, got root, installed safestrap, and attempted to install this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2544474
It was my understanding this came with Loki-Doki (saw it floating around in a different thread asking if it worked, can find it if nessecary) as a patch. So I downloaded and backed up my stock install, and attempted to install this.
Now the problem is when I boot, it returns me to a bootloop, if you could call that progress.. It vibrates occasionally while bootlooping (samsung - safeboot - blackscreen - vibrate - samsung....). I still have access to safestrap, download mode and so on, if it helps at all. I've also tried http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2537495 WITH loki-doki (as it is explicitly stated) to no success either..
I'm looking for one of two solutions;
how to get stock firmware back, or how to properly install this? Or any variation thereof. . . I don't know what the problem is ahaha
Bumping to say multiple wipes>reflashes later the blue screen has yet to occur, not sure what that was... Bootlooping is the huge problem now!

So will it ever be possible to flash AOSP ROMs on NB1?
Not until the bootloader is unlocked. There is no telling when that will be.

Best bet is to find a ROM that you like, then install the Google Experience Launcher apk. It will give your phone the stock google launcher.

Domination Theme will also extensively theme your touchwiz rom to give it a more complete AOSP look without an AOSP rom.
All right thanks for the help guys.
