[Q] Weird Brick i9505 - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everybody!
I'm having a weird problem with my S4 i9505 device, i left it charging on the sofa for about an hour while i went to pick up my son from nursery and when I came back the phone was unresponsive with the LED stuck on blue with a weird kind of glow about it :/ and very hot - front and back.
The lock/power button did nothing, and neither did the home button so I pulled the battery and left it out for 4/5 minutes before putting it back in. I tried turning the phone back on - nothing. the handset gave a short vibrate then six seconds later vibrated again. Nothing on screen, capacitive buttons or LED notification and while in this state does not get recognized by my computer (Win 7 64bit all drivers fine).
I cannot boot the device into download mode (volume down + home key and power).
I cannot boot into TWRP which was installed way before this crash (volume up + home key and power).
If i plug device into wall charger it goes back to the blank screen with blue LED, HOWEVER in this state my computer will recognise it in Odin!
What I've tried doing.
While in this "blue LED state" and it being recognized in Odin i've tried flashing official firmware, official firmware with PIT file, flashing CWM and TWRP.
Everything I do gives me the message that its failed via Odin
My device was previously running I9505_-_Official_Google_Edition_4.4_by_Jamal2367_v4.0 nice clean install done by the book (davlik wiped cache wiped, basically a new handset totally fresh and clean) if thats any help to anyone.
Been racking my brains for the last few days trying to fix it but no luck

Hi there,
When you say its failing in Odin whilst plugged into the charger I assume you are able to put the phone into download mode in order for odin to work correctly?
Have you checked that there is no issue with the battery itself i.e Is it Swollen - HERE

Thanks for the fast reply!
I don't know if it is in download mode - there's nothing to confirm on screen that it is but in Odin message box it says "<ID:0/003>Added!!"
The batter appears fine, I havent got access to another device to check though.

Try pulling the battery again and wait atleast 4 to 5 minutes and put it back , then Hold Power+Volume down in order to reach download mode, if the screen is black while your in Download mode it seems that your phone might be needed to send to repair. but if you can actually see the green android with your screen then reflash the stock rom for your phone.

Odin will recognise the fact that a device has been plugged in even if its not in download mode.
Can you completely turn your phone off and leave it for a couple of minutes?
Leave unplugged from PC - Sort Odin out with firmware and let it check md5 etc
Then put in download mode - Volume down + Power (I know you cannot see screen) till you feel it vibrate and keep hold for about a second. Let go and then volume up............
Plug phone intoPC and let Odin see it again and start Odin:fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed:

Tried this and no luck. Odin will only recognize the device is plugged in if its in the "blue LED state"
If i power up normal, recovery mode or download mode the phone behaves the same way each time - short vibrate then 6 seconds later another short vibrate
I don't understand why Odin would pick it up ONLY when its in this state!? And even when the device shows as being connected it won't do anything at all

Strange indeed mate......May be worth trying to borrow another battery (if you know someone with one?). As I mentioned and also above it could be battery related.....I really have no other suggestions at the moment mate, Sorry

Then I am not sure.......You may be able to take it for repair and hope that its a hardware issue and they do not delve into the Status of the phone too much?

Sorry but, how do you get blue LED state? Just powering on the device? I get blue led state when finish charging or a notification enters...
Anyway, consider that odin will recognize the phone even if it is working and operative, not only in download mode, so the fact odin recognizes it doesn't mean you are in download mode. If you try to flash in a different mode than download mode, it will fail. So, you are not able to flash anything even if odin is recognizing the device; only if you are sure you are in download mode will.
Do you see in any moment anything in the screen? Every sympthom you are describing seem as screen doesn't work but all the rest of the device is working fine. Consider it is very difficult to enter in download mode with no control messages on the screen such as samsung logo, and so on... and then entering in download mode by pressing vol up.
Two possibles issues on my opinion:
1) any problem in the software doesn't allow you to see the screen. If so, try very carefully entering in download mode and flash a stock 4.3 (because I am not sure if you still have knox bootloader or not, if so, flashing a 4.2.2 will fail) with Odin 3.09 (be sure you have installed on your PC Kies 3 so that yoi are sure you have last drivers). To be sure you enter in download mode: take off your battery, and put it back; pwr+home+vol down (three buttons) during 3 or 4 seconds; then release fingers and push vol up, then connect the usb cable while odin is launched and see if odin see the phone (if so, flash; if don't, you are not in download mode or you are not able to enter in it, try some times if so).
2) Screen or screen PCB broken -> repairing SAT
Tell us back.

If I power up the device without charging cable plugged in i get blank screen single vibrate about 5 seconds after holding power button and no LED.
If i insert usb cable into computer while device is OFF i get blank screen, single vibrate no LED and "my computer" device manager and Odin shows nothing connected
If i insert wall charger while device is OFF i get vibrate then after 6 seconds vibrate again then after 30 seconds or so the blue LED comes on. Now if i remove the phone from the wall charger in this state - still with the blue LED on it shows up in Device manager as Portable Devices - Samsung Mobile MTP device and shows up in Odin.
I haven't got the locked Knox bootloader, I was running 4.4 google play edition at the time of the crash with TWRP custom recovery
Ive tried using Odin 1.85 and Odin 3.04 and nothing works, I will try with 3.09 and report back but I'm not holding my breath.
On a side note I had a similar problem with the Galaxy note n7000 and I fixed that by rewriting the file partitions in CMD, could this work here do you think?
If the device can be found in device manager then I should be able to get into ADB right?
*UPDATE* I followed your instructions above and Odin 3.09 actually got me further than before
This time after checking the MD5 it flashed a stock rom 4.3. the device reset itself and made the tingly loadup noise but still with a blank screen. When I flashed the ROM I also flashed the PIT just in case (opinion on that?)
Now when I charge the device i get a red LED and not long after it turns green. Is that safe to assume that my battery is now fully charged?
Now I'm leaning more towards a hardware failure and my screen has gone I've never had a problem with the screen at all so I find this very strange that the screen could have died? Also I've taken the phone apart checked all ribbon connectors were in place and everything is fine, I didnt notice anything untoward with the screen (don't know what i was meant to be looking for mind! fire damage?! black soot?! blown out cables?! Not a clue?!)
But at least I'm running stock which should make trouble shooting a bit easier.

Blue led could be because you have the battery full charged.
Adb only if you have USB debugging mode checked.
Odin 3.09 was created for i9505 specifically, you must obligatory use this version to flash roms, otherwise you can get impredecible results.
As i said before, even Odin recognizes your phone, if you are not in download mode, it will fail, so it is critical to be sure you are in download mode, you must forget blue led state and so on and concentrate to be sure you are entering in download mode: unplug all charging and data cables, be sure you have the phone off (you can only be sure of this by taking off the battery and putting it back again), three keys combination for 3-4 seconds, volume up key, plug in the data cable and check on pc if Odin 3.09 recognizes it, if so, flash the stock official ROM you consider.

there was a thread about that issue, turn off your phone, unplug the usb cord, plug the usb cord. hold vol up and vol down and the power button. it will come on but when it goes off release the power button and keep holding down the vol up and vol down. should go into auto download mode. then u can reload it via odin.

this is normal just continue to download mode as normal.

you can save your device through odin, plug your phone in to your computer and try to go into download mode may take a couple tries, and flash the stock ROM you can find on these forums
i have already tried the sequence to get it into download mode... it doesnt work... tried adb and nothing registers....
anymore ideas? looks like im going to have to do a warranty exchange.
The only way I can reliably get to download mode is: power off, remove battery, replace battery, hold both vol buttons, plug in usb. works every time though.

are you using a .pit file? and if so is it the right 512 .pit file?
if both those are yes, delete the one on your system and re-download it.
I had this same exact problem a few weeks back Odin would hang on the pit file, just redownloaded and it worked like a charm.
and just a quick reminder of everything out for the Vibrant right now
Only stock firmware use the 'PDA' option a pit file, and re-partition
froyo firmware use the 'PDA' option and a pit file, no re-partition
JACs kernels use the 'CSC' option and no pit file, no-repartition
i have a Bell Vibrant and all the methods don't work. i tried the 3 button (remove batt, place in batt, plug USB, wait for the the ''star" to appear, hold VOL+/- and POWER and wait for the screen to turn off, release POWER, but it just goes back to recharging screen. tried it 40 times
tried the power off, remove battery, replace battery, hold both vol buttons, plug in usb. no go as well.
ANything else? I'm stuck at the boot screen (the 'S' glowing part).
This is what always works for me.
Unplug your USB from your phone
Makes sure ODIN is ready to go on your PC
Hold down the Down Volume and Power until the download screen comes on
Then plug your USB back into the phone
fire up odin
pull your battery
connect phone to pc WITH THE BATTERY OUT
hold volume up+down and power
put battery in while still holding those buttons
the screen will light up with....something. Wait for the screen to blink and then release the buttons.
You are now in download mode!
i will try those methods. Thanks.
crap, still no. just keeps showing the battery charging. i remember rescuing my htc magic so many times, but no go on this guy.....
Odin all fired up when doing this......

Did you make sure that the USB was unplugged when you used my method of holding down the volume down button and power button together until the download screen came up?
If you are familiar with ADB. You can also power your phone on and then plug in the USB and then type in the command line:
adb reboot download
to get it to reboot into download mode.
You can also use this command from the recovery console if you are able to get to it.

Dude, the Vibrant is new to us all. None like it. So dev wise its harder to explain and understand when we are used to coming from a one press method, now were using Odin, and Thor's hammer to flash our phones, which is god awful, no pun intended.
Dont flame your fellow Vibrant user cause he doesent understand the 613 steps it involves, and every other way to do so. Help the kid.
I am also in this position, just using a finger in the socket method, if its on it'l shock me, know what i mean. Just try it all. I have a feeling its getting harder and harder to brick phones because the manufacture is not retarded, they fix them right back, and ship them back out to customers who need replacements. I know this as a friend works at an AT&T shipping warehouse.
So cant we all just hit a bong, or get a long? And help?
If someone could explain all this 512PIT, PDA, and CSC, and Phone. It would help so much, sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words. Just sayin.

Yeah man, i'll try it again!! And when do I start typing (sending out the adb command) when the power turns on? Thanks.
Question is: when i press power+vol Down, the boot splashscreen comes on (Galaxy S etc etc).....
I am sorry you have a Bell Vibrant, it is a little different than my phone. I found this hope this helps
HOWTO GET INTO DOWNLOAD-MODE:
- Turn off your Phone
- Hold VOLUME DOWN + HOME Buttons
- While holding VOLUME DOWN + HOME Buttons press POWER Button until you reach Download-Mode
- Release all Buttons
I also read that some of the Bell Vibrants had their Download/Recovery mode disabled.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=754673&highlight=bell
As far as the adb command I would start as soon as it powers on. It will say "error:device not found" at first, but just keep on hitting arrow up and hitting the enter in the command window until it accepts the command.
Good Luck

Did I Brick It? $20 Reward

Moving up from an Eris to the Fascinate. Rooted the phone successfully via reboot, SuperUser Icon.
Went to install Clockworkmod, put phone in Download mode, ran Odin said failed first try so I tried it again, didn't attempt to install clockwork phone rebooted and immediately went to the phone, triangle pc icon (bad right).
So I can't get the phone back into download mode. I can only get recover via battery pull, plug in usb cable, power on phone and then hold up volume and power button and I'll get to recovery. Reboot in recovery does nothing, update.zip comes up with an error and factory reset and clear cache do nothing. PC will not recognize phone via USB so I don't know what to do...
$20 Paypal to the first poster that can get me back on track. Detailed instructions/ideas please.
TIA
Have you tried the same steps that you use to get into recovery, but with the down volume button instead?
Sent from my SCH-I500 with Dirrk's LV 1250 voodoo lagfix installed.
Yes, it goes from the battery charging Icon (once I first plug it into the usb and power on).
If I hold up volume and power it goes to recovery.
If i hold down volume and power it goes to phone, triangle, pc icons.
Hokay.
Pull your battery and usb cable.
Leave your battery out.
Hold DOWN VOLUME and plug in usb cable, while odin is running in background.
Welcome to download mode.
Insert battery.
Continue with Odin madness.
OK, that worked, now my PC is recognizing the device a serial item and it's not coming up in Odin?
re-open odin.

Victory!!!!
I had this problem before. Odin didnt want to do its job if I put the phone in download mode with the data cable plugged in.
You could try unplugging the data cable.
Pull the battery.
Put the battery back in.
Hold volume down and do a short press of power maybe like 1 second long.
wait till it goes into download mode.
Open Odin.
Plug in phone.
That should work. It would fail every time for me if I didnt do those steps.
Hope it helps!

Apparently I forgot to add the line to put it back in, Wow D: Atleast theres clarification ,Thanks for that. Will add it
@tanmay, Dark grey? That means the phone isnt completely powered off, Theres still backlight, Has to be completely powered down, I do hope its done in download mode. Anything flash related is purely in download mode to assure 100% safeness
but it doest help(((.it seems it is turning on but no download mode image.is it normal?
we know that we have to put it back....but the screen lightens up to dark grey and no download mode.what to do?

i think that he's saying that the phone isn't going in download mode after putting back the battery......but if he didn't put the battery back in then he just had a blond moment
Check and see if you can enter recovery mode or if its broken. Vol Up + Home , Then 1 sec gap, Hold power till it vibrates, Make sure theres no backlight or thats not completely shut down.
@rit, Well yeah :\ Cause you know, Phone without a battery and hoping it will turn on--Just no comment there rofl
could you go into download mode?my screen is still lightened gray

yup..it was totally over...i earlier flashed into xxkb3..it was no problem then...dunno what happened now...SAD
plus i have my usb cable removed
Mines works perfectly o.o Flashed mine before making the guide. Hence the guide.
1. Take out the battery. 10 secs just to be safe. There should be no light. Or phones still alive.
2. Yes the 3 button combo is annoying, But its the only options android has given us. Recovery mode can break but it can be restored. Download mode is your highest prior. I dont know if your battery is low. If it is then use a direct power supply, phone will turn on without a battery. See how far it gets to turning on.
3. Replace the battery and retry the same, the pit file shouldnt harm the phone in any way.
4. See if you can enter Download mode.
Also i hope you flashed it when it was in download mode. The android digging picture should have been there when you flashed the pit or any other file. If you flashed it on a black screen *happens when adb server keeps the com port alive* it bricks the phone.
if there appeared pass on the odin, it means yes.yeah?

yes you can remove the usb............may i suggest taking off the battery for a while.........go for a walk , catch your breath and come back maybe it will work then!
Yeah, That means it worked. The pit file is just to prepare the phone.
See if this helps you in anyway

i removed the usb cabel. then tried to go in download mode.i am in download mode now,the image appeared and now connect ub again and continue the process?

boot loops at recovery???

So I have done some searching but nothing I've tried help or not the same issue.
I was trying to root everything seemed to go fine. Phone reboots and now all it does is goes to a screen with blue letter at the top left that says recovery and then reboots. I've tried to power button home button volume key combo same thing happens. Phone keeps looping, so I pull the battery. As soon as I put it back in it starts looping again, even without me trying to turn it on.
Am I screwed? I have tried adb but it cant find the device, I assume because it keeps rebooting. Does Samsung have something like the HTC RUU or would that not matter because of the boot loop?
Any help would be great!
Thanks

If you cannot get into download or recovery mode by using the
Home+VolumeDown+PowerButton or Home+VolumeUP+PowerButton
then you will need to purchase a "USB JIG" from an online store or from
eBay, it's very inexpensive $5.00 or less shipped.
You plug it into the USB port of the phone after the phone is fully
powered down. After doing that it takes less than 3 seconds for
the phone to go into "download mode" automatically.
Once its in download mode and you unplug the jig you can Odin
flash the official stock firmware/rom and have a fresh start.
I have been using a JIG for years on many models of Samsung Android
phones and it works GREAT! It even worked perfectly on a friends HTC.
Good luck!

S5 SM-G900F Soft-/ Hardbrick?

Hi all,
I've tried to downgrade my S5 from most recent Kies lolipop to kitkat (G900FxxxANCE from sammobile). After odin pass the phone reboots (at leas it seems so) but does not show up on screen - so screen is black and no chance to do anything - the blued led comes up.
I tried some tutorials without success (last try: remove battery - powerbutton - wait). Do you
a) know whether it is a soft or hard brick?
b) any workaround?
If you answer to this I would be very glad since I'm currently a bit nervous.
Thank you and regards so far.

No, not really. Or I don't really know since the screen doesnt show anything. I've read that the blue led stands for entering download mode.
Well, at least odin recognizes the phone when plugging in while the blue led is on.
If you had a successful odin flash, you should have a recovery.....
You need to (at least) try to get into recovery.....sometimes, in cases like this, wiping cache and factory resetting (maybe a couple of times) is enough to get the phone to reboot......
If it doesn't work, going to download mode and re flashing your LP firmware may be necessary.......

The screen is plain dead. It does not react in any way. When I "start" the phone I don't see anything except the blue led in the upper left corner on the phone itself.
I'm not sure if its booting into recovery (I've read that the blue led stands for recovery mode though).
The only thing I recognize is the successfull connection in Odin but I can't flash again since it hungs in "Connecting..."-state.
Regards.

Remove the battery so you know 100% the phone is off
Replace battery
Press and hold Power Down & Home & Power until it enters download mode
If nothing appears on the screen after a few seconds (Give it about 5+ seconds of holding the buttons down), then it is likely a hardware issue
Possibly the phone itself, but also possible one of those buttons is not working

Thank you. It didn't work in any way. I've tried to connect via ADB and factory reset but I can't establish a ADB connection. I connect the device and windows tells me "Installing drivers" (Drivers are installed) but fails in the end. So I guess this is the fault. Whatever.
I can't tell in which state the phone boots as I only see the blue led (its just turned on - no blinking).

Sounds like it's time for the old repair shop unfortunately
i have had the same problem when i downgrade to kitkat to fix it download a lollipop rom from sammobile then u have to :
-remove battery put it back
-press Home + Power + Volume Down buttons
-screen will be black no problem press up arrow to continue to download mode
-connect phone to usb
-open odin u will see it is connected
-flash lollipop and u will be back
i think it is a restriction for lollipop because u will root the phone on kitkat with tw.apk
if this not will help i have another solution just try it same problem to me and i figured my self to fix the problem
Hi all,
i have the same probleme with my sam G5.
after flashing back the lolipop stock rom 5.0 the phone seems to be working properly except for the screen that shows nothing; windows detects it as MTP device and i can get in and see all the content inside of it, also when i assimilate entering the download mode (volume down + Home + power then after few secondes Vol up) it goes well since odin detects it and flash it (but always there is nothing that shows up on the screen),
any ideas or hints ??
If you want to downgrade to kitkat from lollipop, then flash kitkat modem and bootloader for your device, you can search on the xtrestolite post, the developer put bootloaders and modems for each g900* device for kitkat and lollipop roms.
