I haven't rooted yet, so I'm just sideloading the latest 7.5 version of Google Maps on my HDX (14.3.1). It installs fine and when run displays the base map normally, however all the labels are unreadable. It looks as if they are overwriting themselves. All other functionality works as expected, but the map is basically unusable in this state.
I'm wondering if anyone else is using Google Maps on an 8.9 HDX? I'm hoping to not have to root right away, but I know I will eventually. Unfortunately there isn't another good mapping app so getting this working is key to me. Thanks in advance,
Steve

I have the same issue with the 7" HDX. There is a better Mapquest app on 1Market (better than the one in the Amazon app store) that works pretty well.

It's good to hear it's not just my HDX, maybe there's a chance it will be fixed. I tried the latest Mapquest and it's pretty good, but I still prefer Google Maps. So far out of 30 Google Play apps it's the only one with any major issues.

I also noticed Maps wants to install Google Play Services when you attempt to set the current location (GPS on my LTE version). I was able to sideload GP services, but that didn't resolve the problem.
Does anyone have Google Maps working on an HDX, rooted or unrooted? Updates to Maps haven't helped so far, but maybe an update to the Kindle OS?

I found some old versions of Maps on this page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2357873
However, none of them seemed to fix the problem of the app not showing street names or overwriting names to where you can't read them. This is REALLY frustrating as I use google maps a lot and this bug makes it practically unusable.
I've gone back as far as version 6.8 and I still see the label overwrite problem. One thing I noticed is after I install and run Maps for the first time, I see the message "Updated to latest version". It seems as if Maps gets an online update the first time it connects to the server. If that's what happens there may not be anyway to install an old version.

Works fine on aosp rom
I have the same issue on my HDX 7 -- and have also tried other versions of Maps.
However, I am running Cpajuste's AOSP 4.2 rom on one of my slots and the Google Maps rendering works fine!
Therefore, it would "appear" to be an issue with the Amazon OS.
Same here.Posted a screenshot couple of weeks ago in a similar thread. Hdx 7 stock no root. Maybe we should could contact Google for this cause it's really strange..

No update on this topic?

I believe the problem is Amazon OS.

This must be a joke.
Navigation in maps 5.0.0 is broken. It is "checking for navigation availability" constantly.
The only fix seems to be uninstalling the Maps update in Market Place, which is also broken as of the 2.7.7 update. It FCs on anything.
Many people are relying on Navigation to get around this holiday. Both signature apps are broken.
Not broken I had the same issue you have to open gmaps before navigation will work. Hope it helps

I have Vending_2.2.7.apk (Market), and Maps 5.0.0.

Depends also the kernal or rom you use. Maybe i dont know... i updated to Netarchy 4.2.1 and everything works on my Evo HD rom...

That worked for me! I did a bit of research and was lead to believe that the Navigation was a widespread problem for which the only solution was deleting the file data or rolling back the update, neither of worked for me. Thanks for the tip!

I can't rule out the rom being the problem. I'm using Fresh 3.5.0.1. My research lead me to believe the problem is widespread among Evo devices. I'll check back in the thread for Fresh to see if they have come up with a solution yet.
Glad I could help I had just flashed to cm6 and had that issue just glad I was able to spread the little bit of knowledge I have.

i revisited the instructions for the Fresh 3.5.0.1, followed the notes for the Market FC problem and fixed the problem!
i got caught up in the discussion on the thread, thinking that the first post wasn't state of the art. i was wrong.
moral of the day: try the instructions before doubting.
Ive had problems regarding installing apks and flashing things.. thats why im always reading various posts regarding the same exaxt instructions..
The 2.2.7 market apk was leaked before the update, so i downloaded it and used Astro to Upgrade the market..

Okay, I was going to complain before, but held off. No longer.
It's stupid that the market totally blocks programs that it "thinks" you can't run.
Right now facebook, which I've been running perfectly fine for months, is now marked incompatible with the note.
But a big warning/disclaimer if you have to. But totally block?
It's just plain annoying, especially for apps which 99% work.

So, this tablet is a great purchase don't get me wrong but the more I play with it the more I see force closing, freezing, and lag. Just not as snappy as my phone. My question is, is it the tablet or is it jellybean? I know jellybean is brand spankin new, so could this be the reason why these apps are force closing? Facebook and ALL browsers I've tried are the worst. And also for some reason it freezes a lot just when I go to my settings. Very annoying waiting for the simple stuff. Let me know if I'm the only one please. Thanks

Im the opposite way. all my apps run smoothly. I may get a bit of lag once in a blue moon but it doesnt bother me. Chrome is also very quick too.
Well if you ask Rovio, it's jelly beans fault. I asked them about Amazing Alex not being available and got:
"Unfortunately Nexus 7 can not be added to the compatible devices due to its non standard way of reading the game's manifest file. This is something we can not change, it's up to the device manufacturer and Operation System manufacturer."
Amazing Alex is running beautifully on my N7. Available from Amazon App Store, so that pretty much makes that last post a complete fabrication of fact.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
I also thought that Amazing Alex being incompatible seemed weird given that it works on Tegra phones...
A load of applications just don't seem to be ready for high resolutions, and don't look right. Given that this device has truly taken off I imagine everyone will start to include 1280 layouts.
I'm grabbing stuff through the Play Store onto my Tab 2 7.0 and the using ROM Toolbox to make a backup, then sideloading the backup .apks on the N7. So far everything has worked just peachy. Probably my number one annoyance at this point with the device. (Previous number one annoyances were "Why is this thing so hard to root after the last OTA or is it my Tab 2 drivers getting in the way?", and after that it was "How in the world do I get Flash to work, why is Dolphin HD not working with Flash?")

You guys should email Rovio.
Amazon Appstore doesn't have strict device policies for apps, so that's why you were able to install it and find out it works fine.
The Play Store, developers have tons of settings for device policies on apps, so they can exclude some devices, or can automatically exclude some devices (and they don't even know that it did).

Why is there yet another thread about app compatibility? Are these people all fresh and new to Android or something? Relax, the OS just launched, give it a few weeks - this is ridiculous now!
Even though YouTube app runs, it is indeed incompatible. Go to Play Store, you won't see it under your "Installed" list. You can't search it in Play store either (because it's incompatible with JB).
Is spotify supposed to be working? I ask as I cannot get the search feature to work at all and so am limited to playing my playlists only.
Amazing Alex HD plays fine here. The only game I found to run like crap is the Not-So-Amazing-Spider-Man.
-Its probably Tegra drivers and not Jelly Bean's fault.

I am having issues getting Google Wallet set up on my Nexus 10. I just received it today, and it sits on the "Setting up Wallet, this may take up to 5 minutes" screen for what seems like forever, then I get a message "Device Not Ready-Wallet is unable to proceed until this device is fully initialized. Make sure the phone has network access and try rebooting it if the problem persists", well the network is 100% A OK, and the device is fully initialized, so I'm not sure what the issue is, and I have rebooted it a few times and even cleared data and cache on the Wallet program, to no avail. Is anybody else having this issue?

It's the stock ROM, just rooted, unlocked bootloader and recovery.
It still won't set up as of this morning, it's not a hardware problem because the NFC works just fine, I guess I'll have to talk to Google.
Well, I fixed it! I went into Titanium and uninstalled it, installed the version in the Play Store, and then opened it up and WHAM, it worked! Maybe the one on the device was corrupt, or uninstalling then re installing cleared out some errors, what do you guys think?
Edit-I don't know that I'll use it on my Nexus 10, as I have it installed and working on my SGS3 (AT&T), but it's nice to have the option, and it was bugging me not being able to get it working lol

In any case, my wallet seems to be stuck also on "Setting up Wallet". I've tried CM10.1, some other custom ROM, and stock, and tried a few different wallet apps on CM10.1, to no avail so far.

I'm having the same issue. I've tried everything short of editing the build prop as some have done in the past with other devices (I have a nexus 4), and probably would even do that if some other person with an N4 did it and had success. Tried multiple ROMs and multiple versions of Wallet with no luck. I either get the "Setting up wait 5 minutes, device not initalized" issue or the "request failed" at the add card error. Put in for a replacement yesterday, so hopefully the new one doesn't have the issue. If so, then we know that there are just some lemon N4's out there.
first, I got this wallet apk from the dev paulobrien here at xda. I don't have the link to his site at the moment. now, onto the fun stuff. to begin with, uninstall any previous wallet app. next, using root explorer drop this apk into the /system/app directory and change the permissions to match the other apps. now, reboot and enjoy the odd looks of cashiers when you pay with your awesome tablet!
I found the link for anyone who is wary.
