Since the MX player has not been Updated to work with Newer Android Versions ( i.e. 4.4.1 / 4.4.2 ) .
It Shows "" unsupported Android version "" and won't even open , MX player is my fav. Player BUT until the dev.s update it . I found the REPLACEMENT APP https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.archos.mediacenter.videofree
Also you can Download All Codecs Plugin that allows to have more Video and Audio codecs supported in Archos Video Player.https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.m4rk3t.libcopy2&hl=en
I DO NOT OWN THE APP or AM RELATED TO DEVELOPER , THIS IS JUST A SUGGESTION :good:
You could also try DicePlayer (click me).
The interface and functionality feels very similar to MXPlayer.
MX Player Developer(s) are already working on the issue. As I understand, they somehow have a hardcoded check for Android Version (not related with maxSdkVersion) which prevents you from using it on 4.4.1/2.

VLC beta for Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.videolan.vlc.betav7neon
+100 for VLC
the best player there is..
it plays everything!
Both are COOL
Agreed , +1 For VLC , But In terms of Features and Interface , i Would Prefer Archos Video Player ,
It gets the Subtitles Automatically ,
Gets the Info about Almost Any Video File
And
The Interface is AWESOME
JUST GIVE IT A TRY , :good:
Lets Get Both the Players .
VLC for me too, the interface is a bit crap right now but it's only temporary right?

My girlfriend was trying to watch a Lady Gaga video on my N1 but it did not show up in the search results of Youtube. Then I tried to search another music video and had the same issue. We got on the laptop and noticed that the videos we were searching on the phone are actually on Vevo. Is there anyway to watch music videos from vevo?

Short answer: For you, no.
Long answer: If you flash the Desire ROM (click my sig) and change the UAString to desktop, yes. I just tested it on the following video and it worked: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrO4YZeyl0I. But it's probably way way more trouble than it's worth for you.

Whether ANY video appears on mobile devices is up to the person who uploads the video. There is a setting to specifically allow mobile devices to see the video that has to be set.
Most video companies do NOT check that option to purposely block mobile devices.
A fantastic work around is the App TubeDroid. It lets you search and download ANY Youtube video to your phone, whether it is enabled for mobile or not
It seems like rooting is a headache if you don't have the patience. I think i rather just for the official release of flash on the Nexus 1. And besides I don't want to void my warranty.

TubeDroid is the sh!t! There are free methods to do the same, but none of them are as alsick, IMHO, and well worth the $3. (Even Dolphin sucks compared to it, and I don't like Dolphin Browser). I think the best part is, you can DL it in different quality levels, the best is for HD on a PC, the next level is for the full use of the N1, and so forth.

mkv is just a container (like avi). Inside mkv there can be several streams (video and audio). These streams can be encoded with different codecs (DivX, H264 and so on). Stock player now knows mkv container, but if it doesn't know codec of the stream inside it can't play this stream (video or audio, or both). That's all

Kraiton and ILPruny rip actually But they're pretty amazing and x264
ok so proper 720p mkvs lag big time but dice player can play mkvs pretty well which are of lower resolutions.mp4s play fine even 720p(in stock player aswell)
funny thing is my stock players seem to recognize riddlera's x264 mkv house rip(gives a thumbnail for the video) but even starts playing it for 3-4 seconds but then stops and gives a msg "this video cannot be played" but the same video plays like butter on diceplayer.
makes me think that its all about encoding issues.
can you check whether the video on the 4th post of this topic plays on your stock player plz.
so you mean in xxkpe even dice player with the hardware acceleration and all cant play 720p mkv???

Try BSplayer :good:
There's also a beta version of VLC player for Android out now too, that might work.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.videolan.vlc.betav7neon
The whole DTS issue is annoying. Most of my MKV's have DTS and a few months ago most of the popular players removed their DTS codecs.
DICE Player 2.0.6 still has the DTS Codec, so does MX Player 1.6F, downside is both of these do not work in Jelly Bean at all....
BS Player does actually play MKV's with DTS, but the frame rate is really bad and the sound is choppy. Latest DICE Player wont even play a MKV with DTS, whereas MX Player plays fine just without any sound. VLC isnt up to much either.

Give it a few days to a week or so. Dice Player devs need to get their hands on a N7 first. I'm just guessing that's the reason why there hasn't been an update for JB yet.

If they have DTS sound you might be out of luck playing in N7.
You could probably load them in Plex on your PC/MAC and stream them to the N7.

I don't have my Nexus yet, so I can't make sure if this works. Go in MXplayer and when playing an MKV file click the sound button on the top right (its probably a musical note) and choose the software decoding option. Let me know if this works. If it works, please give me some thanks!

Try choosing s-w decoding with MX player.
Playback is annoyingly choppy though.

Uh Oh..... I was thinking of getting the Nexus 7 but if it cannot play .mkv with DTS, that maybe a deal breaker. I have the Galaxy Note and the Galaxy 7.7 and both of them are able to play .mkv with DTS without any problem using DicePlayer, BS Player, and MX Player.
How can Tegra 3 not be able to play .mkv with DTS ? Is it because of Jelly Bean's fault ?
This is in a wrong section. Should be under apps, I already open a thread for it.

Me too, so it's not that either.
I honestly have no idea, but I suspect it's a problem on Google's side, not the phone's.
Try tubemate. It gives every available resolution in every possible connection n device. BTW you can use 3rd party players with tubemate too which is a good thing if you use MX player. Download the tubemate apk. There's no playstore version. My YouTube doesn't even give more than 480p. It's just device oriented. It will not give you higher res than your phone's display res.

Sign out of youtube, in app manager, force stop youtube, clear cache and data. Sign in to youtube. You may need to fo it few time untill 1440 option become avaiable. Sometimes helps restarting phone before signing in to youtube.
