mkv is just a container (like avi). Inside mkv there can be several streams (video and audio). These streams can be encoded with different codecs (DivX, H264 and so on). Stock player now knows mkv container, but if it doesn't know codec of the stream inside it can't play this stream (video or audio, or both). That's all

Kraiton and ILPruny rip actually But they're pretty amazing and x264

ok so proper 720p mkvs lag big time but dice player can play mkvs pretty well which are of lower resolutions.mp4s play fine even 720p(in stock player aswell)
funny thing is my stock players seem to recognize riddlera's x264 mkv house rip(gives a thumbnail for the video) but even starts playing it for 3-4 seconds but then stops and gives a msg "this video cannot be played" but the same video plays like butter on diceplayer.
makes me think that its all about encoding issues.
can you check whether the video on the 4th post of this topic plays on your stock player plz.

so you mean in xxkpe even dice player with the hardware acceleration and all cant play 720p mkv???

1280x720 resolution mkv's still lag even with hw accl in dice player....................still checking.most of my 720p videos have dd/dts audio track maybe that is the problem.
ok stock player plays hd mkv really nicely as long as the audio track doesnot have dolby digital or dts encoding.still testing

Naturally, being the replacement for the well-known Samsung i9000 Galaxy S, the Galaxy S II has to fit the very large shoes of its predecessor. And judging by the initial impressions from quickly playing around with the device – it does pretty well. The user interface is ridiculously snappy and the phone, despite its mammoth size, feels alive and light.
And just to give you a taste of what kind of performance we are talking about, we’ve prepared a short video of the Galaxy S II playing a 720p HD YouTube video straight within the stock Android browser.

Most people don't know it, but 720p youtube videos play fine on my SGS with 2.3.3 as long as I don't use the flash player from the market. The SGS II is going to be on another level I'm sure, but 720p flash files are already conquered.

Then how do you play them ?
It comes with a pre installed flash player. Which i suppose, like the atrix's own, is optimized specifically for the galaxy s.
I have a captivate right now, and it's running 2.2, and whilst it can play 720p youtube videos, they are choppy, so not much use. More than likely however, it will be able to play it more smoothly when a T&t rolls out the gingerbread update for it. If they ever plan to. =.=
No you don't understand there is a trick to play 720p flash videos butterly smooth (even Underclocked at 800Mhz btw) on a Galaxy S running froyo or up, he was not talking bout playing it straight within the browser. I just asked him to figure out if he really know this trick or not

It largely depends on the bit rate of the video. I could make a video that has a resolution of 480X272 that even the SGS II could not play. Bit rate is...not everything, but most things, with video.
Also, it sounds more like you're viewing the HTML 5 version of it than the Flash version, but IDK.
I was going to wait for the G2x. IDK now. Is this coming to t-mobile?

Simply put - yes. Not using the flash version from the market. Both HD videos from gametrailers and 720p videos from gsmarena play fine.
EDIT: It's actually running the 10.1 version of the flash player
@ tou
There is stutter for 480p videos. But It is only present at the start, due to the loading and I guess the cpu getting ready. After the start, it plays like any other flash video.
Yes the G2X is for TMobile although the specs of the SGS II surpass any device announced to date.

<Universal-guide> for all x10 mp4 converting softwares

Greetings loved ones, i will explain how and what are the precautions you should take in order to ensure that your converted video is supported by x10.
Firstly, remember this: THE HIGHEST QUALITY VIDEO FORMAT x10 support is MP4 encoded with codec for 'PS3-MEPG4' which has an extension of (.mp4)!
although it may seem like just one of the many mp4 formats supported by the X10, THIS IS IN FACT THE HIGHEST-QUALITY-FORMAT SUPPORTED. how do i know this? i am a kinda-professional video editor and a small director (not in business though, a talented hobby). and i did a lot of research using all the best softwares available on the market (i meant the internet not the android market).
ok, so to summarise, x10 supports quite a lot of (.mp4) format files, but they does not mean the best quality. best quality [for-x10] is (.mp4) files encoded in 'PS3-MPEG4' codec.
-----------------------------
HOW DO YOU DO THIS,
use any one of the following softwares which supports conversion to this codec:
*4Media PS3 Video Converter (windows & mac)
http://www.mp4converter.net/ps3-video-converter-win.html
OR
*Sothink Video Converter Free Version (windows only)

there are many more other softwares which i have not tested but might support 'PS3-MPEG4' format conversion. you can google them. the above softwares are tested by me personally and works. I TESTED THE PAID VERSION NOT THE FREE TRIAL. SO I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF THE FREE TRIAL DOES NOT WORK FOR YOU. and i know how good most of you guys are at getting paid softwares for free from the internet. that is one alternative that i am not recommending (i dont want to go to prison) BUT YOU MIGHT WANT TO CONSIDER IT AT YOUR OWN RISK thanks i wanted to share this info with you guys.
THANKS AND GOOD LUCK

An MP4 with .h264(AVC) video and .aac audio is the best codec/container setup. Is that what is used in the profiles you suggested? And 854x480 = 16x9 so if your converter supports it, encode to that resolution.

Yeah, you "can" play 720p if it has a low enough bitrate. Good for showing off Animation can be encoded with lower bitrate & still look good so I do watch some 720p anime from time to time
I am using Handbrake. GPL, multiplatform, work over network. You can add chapters, subtitles, have many builtin presets, to no think about the best configuration, and can use acceleration on nvidia gpu's
The best for me as linux user.

i think it should be ok if you use 'PS3 converting profile' that you mentioned
BUT MAKE SURE THE encoding is in MPEG-4 (extension .mp4)!
BECAUSE PS3 SUPPORTS VARIOUS FILE FORMATS SUCH AS (.divx) (.avi) (.wmv) !
NOT JUST MP4.
SO MAKE SURE YOU use 'PS3 converting profile' and choose (.mp4) extension

AMD stated that Cyberlink MediaShow Espresso software WILL USE the ATI Stream direction and capabilities. so, you could just get that
but i heard a software called TMPGEnc 4.0 Xpress could do better quality than MediaShow Espresso, but i am not sure. you could check that out too.

It broke flash on Opera for me. And there is zero hardware acceleration on the stock browser. Nice job, Adobe.
Don't update.
Revolver 3.5.2
Same here; flash player 11 does not work on Honeycomb 3.2.1 and Transformer.
Opera it just comes up with a black area
With Stock Browser it crashes.
Now I need to find 10.3 apk
I found a 10.3.186.3 apk
EDIT: I installed Dolphin for Pad and Flash 11 workis in it.
Makes adverts on youtube flicker and flash while watching a windowed video
Fullscreen 480p - watchable
720p and 1080p bad framerates, more like watching a slideshow
Thanks for the news. I'll wait a little longer before updating Flash !
Seems like Honeycomb 3.2.1 or whatever the last Asus update was, had a different implementation of flash playback where it would pass the video on to the video player. This version of flash crashes in the default browser but I was able to play Avatar 720p fine in Maxthon.

Working fine on mine with flash update today and latest Asus update last week, playing 720 and latest 1080 in stock browser on YouTube, got rid of opera as the update before last sorted out the web browser, still very slight lag typing on here but much better.
Just updated. Fps in youtube test video actually dropped to 23-26 in 720p, but the real 720p videos became smoother, same for very complex flash sites. Using stock browser.
Can't even get this to instal on Prime 2.0.1, tells me it's an incompatible update.

updated on stock transformer
hbogo.com is still crappy
- video starts out with low quality
- then, it changes to HD which looks great for 10 seconds and then slideshow begins
I don't have a problem streaming stuff from hbogo.com with the HP Touchpad. From start to finish, it plays flawlessly.
Touchpad flash >>> transformer flash
I think the installation of Flash 11 breaks the newest implementation of flash 3.2.1. Remember how flash videos would load with a swirling blue honeycomb style circle and the video controls looked more like the honeycomb video player? Even if you uninstall version 11 and install 10.3, you can't get this back.
Anyone know how to restore the old implementation?

I traded email with an adobe engineer regarding this issue. He provided a fix for the browser crashing that worked for me. Clear browser data. This will kill Flash Player's config.data file and force it to re download, but you'll lose your bookmarks and cookies, etc. I restarted the tablet and when you next run the browser Flash Player will re-download it's config data from the server at next launch. They also said that they don't support Opera — just the stock browser.

OK, per Android Police, this version of Adobe doesn't have hardware acceleration!
" Unfortunately, the latest blog post from Adobe indicates that 2D and 3D graphics rendering through Stage 3D will only be available on Windows, Mac OS X and connected TVs. Apparently, a "production release" of Flash Player 11 with support for Stage 3D will be available for Android, Apple iOS and BlackBerry in an "upcoming release""

Make sure the sound is not DTS. DTS would not work with most android movie players.

Try BSplayer :good:
There's also a beta version of VLC player for Android out now too, that might work.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.videolan.vlc.betav7neon
The whole DTS issue is annoying. Most of my MKV's have DTS and a few months ago most of the popular players removed their DTS codecs.
DICE Player 2.0.6 still has the DTS Codec, so does MX Player 1.6F, downside is both of these do not work in Jelly Bean at all....
BS Player does actually play MKV's with DTS, but the frame rate is really bad and the sound is choppy. Latest DICE Player wont even play a MKV with DTS, whereas MX Player plays fine just without any sound. VLC isnt up to much either.

Give it a few days to a week or so. Dice Player devs need to get their hands on a N7 first. I'm just guessing that's the reason why there hasn't been an update for JB yet.
Have you tried Mobi Player?

Tried multiple apps including mxplayer, diceplayer ad, & couldn't even get mobo player to play after install.
Anyone know of a video player that is optimized for the Tegra 3 and will play .mkv files on Nexus 7 w/JB of course.

If they have DTS sound you might be out of luck playing in N7.
You could probably load them in Plex on your PC/MAC and stream them to the N7.

There's also a beta version of VLC player for Android out now too, that might work.

I was unable to find VLC player but I tried one called VPlayer & it seems to work pretty well. Would like to try VLC player But it isn't showing up in Google Play for me. Neither is Adobe Flash for that matter.

Flash and vlc come up as incompatible for my device. Maybe they just don't show up at all for some people.

I don't have my Nexus yet, so I can't make sure if this works. Go in MXplayer and when playing an MKV file click the sound button on the top right (its probably a musical note) and choose the software decoding option. Let me know if this works. If it works, please give me some thanks!

Try choosing s-w decoding with MX player.
Playback is annoyingly choppy though.

Uh Oh..... I was thinking of getting the Nexus 7 but if it cannot play .mkv with DTS, that maybe a deal breaker. I have the Galaxy Note and the Galaxy 7.7 and both of them are able to play .mkv with DTS without any problem using DicePlayer, BS Player, and MX Player.
How can Tegra 3 not be able to play .mkv with DTS ? Is it because of Jelly Bean's fault ?
This is in a wrong section. Should be under apps, I already open a thread for it.

MX Player Replacement App

Since the MX player has not been Updated to work with Newer Android Versions ( i.e. 4.4.1 / 4.4.2 ) .
It Shows "" unsupported Android version "" and won't even open , MX player is my fav. Player BUT until the dev.s update it . I found the REPLACEMENT APP https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.archos.mediacenter.videofree
Also you can Download All Codecs Plugin that allows to have more Video and Audio codecs supported in Archos Video Player.https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.m4rk3t.libcopy2&hl=en
I DO NOT OWN THE APP or AM RELATED TO DEVELOPER , THIS IS JUST A SUGGESTION :good:
You could also try DicePlayer (click me).
The interface and functionality feels very similar to MXPlayer.
MX Player Developer(s) are already working on the issue. As I understand, they somehow have a hardcoded check for Android Version (not related with maxSdkVersion) which prevents you from using it on 4.4.1/2.

I actually tried it before installing DicePlayer but I don't like it that much.
Thanks anyway
VLC beta for Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.videolan.vlc.betav7neon
+100 for VLC
the best player there is..
it plays everything!
Both are COOL
Agreed , +1 For VLC , But In terms of Features and Interface , i Would Prefer Archos Video Player ,
It gets the Subtitles Automatically ,
Gets the Info about Almost Any Video File
And
The Interface is AWESOME
JUST GIVE IT A TRY , :good:
Lets Get Both the Players .
VLC for me too, the interface is a bit crap right now but it's only temporary right?

Arm 7-A
Haven't had much luck with VLC, it just craps out and makes my screen unresponsive when opening a .mkv that isn't a HW supported codec.

Seems like the MX Player Team has finally released a Test Build and we can expect the final build any time soon:
