When I switch from my wifi connection to standard data usage, it automatically goes to 3G. Whats the deal with this?

I just noticed a potential issue. When I enable Wifi, it appears to disable 3G.
The 3G symbol disappears. Is it possible to have Wifi and 3G on at the same time?
How is that an issue? Every android phone I've owned (G1, MT3G, N1, Droid, Incredible, Vibrant) does exactly what you're talking about when you turn on WiFi. If you're on wifi, you dont need 3G.
... and I believe this option is set by default; if you are on WiFi and the screen goes to sleep the WiFi will be disconnected and the cellular data re-enabled.
If you're concerned about making phone calls, don't be. You still get phone reception just as if you weren't on the wifi. If you want 2 data streams, that's not gonna work, though I have no idea why you would need that.
I've switched from wifi to 3g and back to wifi again while on hold in a call and sending emails and browsing. This phone is awesome. Off topic, sorry

Hi there, i am on a t-mobile htc hd2 with android, MDJ's 2.4 version. I would like to know if i have both wifi and data plan turned on, does that mean i will use wifi first over data when wifi is available and no data usage? and should I turn off data when wifi is available to save battery or it just drain the same amount?
yes, wifi will be used instead of 3G if you are connected to a network, and don't bother switching off data you won't notice any difference as wifi drains so much more than 3G anyway
Is anybody facing a data connectivity issue??
Im running on nexus 4 stock with 4.2.2.
The problem i am getting is slow mobile data connectivity or data stalls/loses connectivity often when idle (i have to open chrome or other app to regain connection) .On the WIFI it has no issues..connects good.
Any body with a similar problem or a possible fix??
Note: Facing issues with only data connection.
(I am unable to ping)
Have downloaded the correct apn settings.still the same problem.(Signal strength is arnd -63 dbm to -93 dbm)
What happened:
I am using a new Nexus 4 in various buildings on a campus (specifically, the University of Washington). For simplicity, let's assume that there are just two buildings, Building A and Building B.
There is a strong WiFi signal within both buildings, and I can connect to the WiFi network in either one. When I walk between buildings, the signal drops outside, and the phone switches to 3G networking (as expected).
Once I'm inside the other building, however, the WiFi does not always automatically reconnect. Instead, the phone will often remain on 3G mode, despite being in the presence of a strong WiFi signal.
If I restart the phone, the phone will then reconnect to the WiFi signal. Unless I do this, however, the phone will remain in 3G mode indefinitely. This drains the battery and results in high data usage with my phone plan.
Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Connect to campus-wide WiFi.
2. Walk outside. WiFi connection will drop, and phone will switch to 3G.
3. Walk inside another building. Phone will remain in 3G mode, rather than switching back to WiFi, despite being in the presence of a strong WiFi signal.
4. Restart the phone. After rebooting, the phone will now connect to the WiFi network.
What you think the correct behavior should be:
The phone should automatically switch back to WiFi when in the presence of a suitable WiFi signal. A manual restart or manual reconnecting to the network should not be necessary.
What kernel are you using?

Did this issue occur before you were on PA rom 3.5?
If it didn't then I think it could be the rom if it's not then it's the school's wifi. It happens to me when I'm on campus too and I found out it the school's WiFi network was getting hammered and the signal was disrupted. No clue how that any of that happened.

Hi, I have the same problem. Did anyone manage to solve it? I have my Nexus 4 since yestereday and it's not reconnecting to my home wifi. Previous phone HTC Incredible S didn't have this issue and since that phone my wifi settings wasn't changed. I have AirLink AP, no name router and wifi is encoded with WPA. But i don't have to restart the phone to reconnect. It's enough to turn wifi on the phone off and on in settings. But it's really annoying. Thanks for hints.
And please excuse wrong expressions, I'm from Czech republic
Edit: I have stock rom, JB 4.2.2
Hello,
To start off, I have a USCellular S4 w/ CM10.1, currently the 7/9 nightly. I am running baseband version R970VXUAMDL and have not modified the kernel.
I have been having issues with wifi tethering both on full stock and with CM10.1. In both scenarios, I'll be able to speed test very highly from my phone (22MBit down and 5-10MBit up with low ping) but devices connected to the wifi hotspot constantly drop packets.
Usually I can connect my tablet to the hotspot and then it'll have about a 50% packet loss for a while and eventually drop to a limited connection and every packet form a ping will either time out or return 'destination host unreachable'. I've tried using the CM10.1 framework tether and the Wifi Router app on CM10.1 and stock. They've both had the same issue.
While connected, my tablet will report excellent wifi signal strength.
Any suggestions? Where should I start looking to get this resolved?
As an update. USB tether is working quite well. This is purely a WiFi tether issue.
