I just noticed a potential issue. When I enable Wifi, it appears to disable 3G.
The 3G symbol disappears. Is it possible to have Wifi and 3G on at the same time?
How is that an issue? Every android phone I've owned (G1, MT3G, N1, Droid, Incredible, Vibrant) does exactly what you're talking about when you turn on WiFi. If you're on wifi, you dont need 3G.
... and I believe this option is set by default; if you are on WiFi and the screen goes to sleep the WiFi will be disconnected and the cellular data re-enabled.
If you're concerned about making phone calls, don't be. You still get phone reception just as if you weren't on the wifi. If you want 2 data streams, that's not gonna work, though I have no idea why you would need that.
I've switched from wifi to 3g and back to wifi again while on hold in a call and sending emails and browsing. This phone is awesome. Off topic, sorry

HSPDA I think
Bascially when my phone download it displays a H and when it's not it displays 3G
Yes, it's HSDPA. It's faster than 3G, so it's good if you see that, it means that your provider has faster internet
On Nokia handsets, HSDPA shown as 3.5G .

uhm does that mean i have am using a premium service that requires me to pay additional lol?
it wasn't like this. It recently became H from 3g only. :X
I've never heard of HSDPA being charged as a premium service. It's just your providers network.
Anyway you can disable it from them settings if you want. Just go to Settings>Wireless and network>Mobile networks>Network mode and choose GSM only. An alternative is to use APNdroid from the market.
I disable it when I'm in a WiFi network or when I don't need a data connection because it uses more battery.
I use the "WCDMA only" (forces HSDPA on) when I want a data connection so my phone does not switch to GSM automaticaly. Be careful if you use that option though. If you move to an area with no HSDPA coverage, your phone won't switch to GSM and you'll have no network connection

I thought if you were on wifi, the phone automatically turns off the mobile data connection?

That's partly right. It does not send or receive data through the mobile data connection but that does not mean it switches to GSM network. It stays connected to the HSDPA mobile network just handles the data requests through WiFi. In my experience anyway
True, but if you don't go into WiFi/Advanced/WiFi Sleep Policy and set it to NEVER, when your phone goes to sleep so does WiFi, which causes the 3G radio to turn back on and using wireless data for updates, email checks, etc.
Long story short, if you're spending a lot of time in a WiFi area, set it to never sleep to save a lot of battery and a bit of data usage.
If you're moving around a lot, leaving WiFi on when the phone is sleeping will use more power, because not only is your 3g radio on, so is the WiFis, as it's constantly looking for a known network to hook up to and scanning for new ones.

Hi I have a few questions about your comment here. I am in an office connected to wifi all day at work and when at home connected to wifi. When I look at battery usage it states
Display 46%
cell standby 19%
phone idle 12%
mario live wallpaper 9% (highest ive seen it but it is the best thing on this phone)
...
...
Wi-Fi 2% (lowest item in list)
Are you saying if i tell it to never make wifi sleep then cell standby usage will go down and i will use less network data? and battery usage will be less then if it makes wifi sleep?
Also if i do this when I am not in office/home and i disable wifi will that also save me some battery?
At the moment i just have wifi on all the time and let the phone use what it wants to.

I believe "cell standby" does not talk of ACTIVE 3.x/2.x G connections! So you should not be looking at that parameter. However it is interesting for us to know that WiFi hardly use any power. "cell standby" should only talk of when mobile is really in standby or display off, low power (suspended) mode.

3G radio uses a LOT more power than short range WiFi. When WiFi is on and connected, the 3G connection is totally turned off. Totally.
Think about it this way...once you get past the new and shiny phase of owning your device, it probably spends MOST of its time with display off and sleeping. So, it will spend a LOT of its time connected to 3g if you let the WiFi go to sleep.
Turning Background Data and Autosync off will prevent the 3G radio from switching back on when WiFi is sleeping (and prevent WiFi from using much transmitter power when awake as well). But turning off sync/background data is not ideal if you need emails or whatever as soon as they are sent, accurate weather forecasts, etc.
Least battery usage is of course in Airplane mode with WiFi and Bluetooth turned off as well, since there is no radio activity at all. But we bought these devices in part because they're connected and "always on" data is coming in.
Here is how I do it:
I use APNdroid to switch 3G off when it's not needed. I find that I only rarely need 3G. Seems that you do not need it either.
I leave WiFi sleep on because tbh I have no reason not to. When WiFi goes to sleep 3G does not autoconnect anyway because of APNdroid.
That way the phone uses plain 2G when no data are needed. When data are needed it uses WiFi most of the time and 3G only when no WiFi is available and I manualy select to put 3g on
Sorry to chair another question.. I see a 'g' logo sometimes... Instead of 3g and h. What's g?

G = GPRS ( General Packet Radio Service )
E = EDGE ( Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution )
3G = 3rd Generation ( I unno, wtf. )
H = HSDPA ( High-Speed Downlink Packet Access )
Basically G(PRS) operates over GSM, it's from dial-up speeds to twice as fast as dial-up.
EDGE operates over 2G, it's almost as fast as standard DSL, about 400kbits and a maximum theoretical 1Mbit.
3G operates in tandem with HSDPA, infact technically HSPA is the technology that is used on the 3G network. It is typically up to 7.2Mbps, with a maximum theoretical of 14Mbit.
HSDPA and HSUPA are specific aspects of a HSPA enabled system. They are Down link and Up link capability respectively.
When you see H, the phone is going from a stable 3G connection to a boosted power consuming ( which is why it isn't constantly on ) state in which it can download very quickly.
So the if the phone connects over wifi it drops the data connection that might've been present on your phone network connection. Is it possible to configure your phone to maintain both wifi and 3G/HSDPA connections at the same time?
I require this because my operator provided (H3G UK network) Skype application only runs on 3G and I have to keep turning off wifi for it to work.
Funny, I find this feature great!! With my WM phones I never knew if it was using wifi or my data connection....even if you can do this how do you make one app use one connection over the other?

You can try droid wall, and configure it to block wifi for skype, it may solve your issue.

Hmm, doesn't sound like that will work, because the phone has already dropped the phone network data connection as soon as I get back home onto my home wifi network (due to prioritisation?) I want the phone to maintain both so I can receive incoming Skype calls at home with fiddling with my phone. I understand why the phone does it and it is sensible for it to do so in most cases, but just not for my usage requirements!
Is it a software/hardware limitation that wifi and phone network data connections can't be open at the same time?
Install Nimbuzz. It supports Skype without that bulls**t restriction. It doesn't support group chats though.

I lose the "H" or "3G" notifier when the phone connects to wifi, that's why it looks like it's purposesly dropping the data connection once it picks up my wifi, I can't see a way to maintain both simultaneously.
I'm using "Skype for 3" provided by my network, it has special integration on the 3 network which allows me unlimited Skype usage (inbound and outbound) without it eating into my data plan. So with this benefit I don't really want to use an alternative app.
I want to keep Skype running all the time so I can receive calls on it, but once I get home, the wifi kills the "H"/"3G" connection, which means my Skype can't receive calls.
the icon isn't there but i think the data (H / 3G) is still running in the background, incase your Wifi fails.
wifi is the... PREFERRED network?
have you tried getting your friend to call you via skype while you're on wifi?
When using the Wireless Tether, Barnacle, and even the Verizon Tether/Easy Switch hack, the data connection just stops and turns itself off. Losing the 3G connection. Why is this happening? I can forget about trying to use a torrent program because that kills the 3G connection immediately. It seems to happen more when the battery is less than 70%. On my old TP2 the HTC Wifi router worked almost flawlessly. It also happens sometimes when using Pandora after a song is done the 3G is gone and I have to turn the screen on to get the connection back. Anyone know what's happening? Is Verizon limiting my data because I use more than average? Is there a way to mask it like the TP2?
Does it always turn off when your screen goes off?
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Not always, but it has more of a chance when the screen is off. Like right now I'm keeping the screen on and it's struggling to keep the 3G on. I'm pretty sure it's not because of my power settings either.
I am a newbe but loss of 3g is a known bug they are supposed to be correcting. Don't know if this helps
THIS DRIVES ME NUTZ!!! glad its not only me.
Yeah. I don't even bother with wifi any more. Same exact problem as you guys. I just use easy tether. Hate having to plug in but at least I get a connection.

Okay, this is a long shot. I'm talking about me standing in California, firing a BB gun up in the air and hoping it hits you in New York kind of long shot, but the my sister (on a Samsung Vibrant - 2.1) kept losing her connection when on Barnacle Tether until she set her Wifi sleep policy to Never.
Again, a LOOONNNNNG shot but hell if you're desperate enough maybe it'd be worth it?
Ehh I think the BB missed me in Boston The problem happens the most when flooding the connection with data requests. If I am using the connection for light web surfing it's ok even with the screen off. For instance a torrent program being open, or having multiple tabs open on a browser. Why can a crappy WM phone keep up the workload but the all-powerful Android can't?
Bro and sis, is there a way to make sure whether i am connected via wifi or 3g? Cuz my 3g dataplan is not unlimited.
Thanks.
Hold the power button down until the device option screen pops up, the same screen that turns it off. You'll see a Data network mode. Select that so that it shows Data network mode deactivated. Now 3g is off for sure.

you can also use widget or personally go to setting to turn off 3g
but somehow, every time my wifi is on, 3g is automatically off
u wont see the symbol on notification bar anymore
thanks bros, nice method.
I've had issues with wifi randomly dropping. Some times I wont notice and the 3g handles my traffic even though I don't want it to due to only getting the 1gb plan. With fully deactivating the 3g data I know when I drop my wifi and am ensured that I've turned my tab into a wifi only device.

The tab uses wifi first when available, and puts the cellular modem to sleep.
I am less than thrilled with the WiFi Calling update, it looks like it only uses WiFi for calling when there is no cellular connection. Problem is, most of the time my cellular connection is so low I fade in/out during the call.
I have read that you can force WiFi Calling by turning on Airplane Mode, then turning WiFi back on. Sometimes when I try to make a call with Airplane on, WiFi on I get an error that prompts me to turn off Airplane Mode.
Does anybody know how to get around this or what is causing it?
Mine will default to WiFi calling when the WiFi network is good enough. If the WiFi network seems spotty or poor, then the phone won't use WiFi calling. If I have great 4G and WiFi available at the same time, the call is usually made over WiFi.

Did you change any settings to get it to prefer WiFi Calling?
And you're on a SM-G930V on Verizon in the USA?
Not that I recall.
