Google sync using allot of data - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I had a galaxy s2 prior to this g2, and I almost never went over my 3 gigs data plan, but since I got the g2 the thing seems to be treating through data like crazy. So I looked in the "data manager" and it shows "android os" as having used almost a gig of data since the 25th. Also I noticed gmail seems to take forever to sync.
Any one have any advice?

Excessive 3g data usage - verizon unable to help solve

A coworker bought a xoom on launch day. He is not tech savvy but has been using a droidx for about 4 months with average monthly data usage of 800mb to 1gb. Based on that, we both figured he was good to use the 1gb plan and then upgrade to more data if his usage with the xoom was more than his droidx.
Since launch day, he has used 921mb of data. I have turned off 3g to prevent usage, but we can't figure out what is eating his data. I am assuming it is back country, an app he buses on his dx that maps out hiking routes by using GPS and aerial photographs. I'm guesing that the app isn't setup for a device like the xoom, and some issue is causing it to continually download data.
Anyone else encounternthis problem? Verizon was little help and we are worried about massive overage chargesbespecially because the My Verizon app displays everything used up though 72 hours ago, and in 3 days (once the actual usage though now is displayed) he'll be way over his 1gb limit.

Verizon tried to screw me on data - my gf bought me a xoom for my birthday and when she purchased it at a Verizon store, she was very clear with the rep that she was NOT setting up any data plan with the device. The day after I got it (the 26th), I went to the same store to buy the portfolio case. The same rep who sold her the phone asked me several times if I wanted to sign up for 3g. I said "no thanks" multiple times. Yesterday I discovered that I was on a month-to-month contract and I should expect an activation fee and a month of data on my next bill.
I had a rep tell me she was reversing the charges, but I don't trust verizon at the moment. Seems like they are pulling car dealer tactics in order to get themselves a couple extra million in fraudulent revenue.
I read somewhere on here that Verizon reps are forcing people to sign up in order to get the Xoom. When I purchased my Xoom from Bestbuy they didn't force me to do anything. They handed me the box after I paid and I left. When you set up your xoom it asks you if you want to skip the 3G setup, which I skipped. Who ever said that you need 3G to have a working Xoom is wrong. The Verizon sales people are scamming or something.
Tell him to to put it in airplane mode. You can still use wifi, but this will ensure he is not using 3g.

Verizon was initially going to require at least a month of data. They backed off of this and I'm assuming some dont know. If any Verizon store rep tells you otherwise have him contact someone higher up.

I saw this App today:
https://market.android.com/details?id=net.rgruet.android.g3watchdogpro&feature=search_result
---> Usage by application (Android 2.2+, unavailable on Dell Streak)
Don't know about Honeycomb support...
I went through 250 mbs in 4 days, half of which was on WiFi. I called Tier 2 tech support and they tried to say a computer would use more and my Incredible is a smaller device, so it wont use as much data.
I average 950-1400 mbs a month on the incredible, doing exactly the same stuff. I might have to rethink this whole idea because of how they structure the data plans. hotspotting off the Inc is dog slow, maybe a radio update will help?
After a day and half I installed the "My Verizon" app from the market to check my usage... over 500MB! I was blown away... I called in and they confirmed it... I switched to airplane mode and switched on only wifi which seems to have taken care of the issue... I switch on 3g only when I am out of wifi.
I have installed basically the same apps as I use on my Nexus S with the exception of the Tegra-specific games. I checked my Tmobile data usage for my Nexus S and I average about 2GB per month... with the Xoom I would be through that in less than a week!
Something doesn't seem right...

They did the EXACT same thing to me. As soon as I left the store I called up customer service and after getting a supervisor on the phone ended up having them completely void out the entire number and month to month contract that they added which I didn't ask for. Why would I pay for their stupid data plans on the tablet when I can tether with my rooted Droid?
Excessive upload from xoom
I have been monitoring my data usage to get a feel for what I use on the 3g
network, I mostly use wifi.. It started yesterday I noticed 40megs of data used on the 3g and 38 of that was uploads. On wifi I see 700mb+ uploaded and maybe 5-7mb downloaded. Im trying to figure out what that tablet is uploading,
there is not much on it. In the first 5 days I owned it I used 1.5mbs of 3g data, yesterday alone it hit 40mb+. When at work I dont touch it much, except for
a email here and there and maybe some info look up but that does not explain the massive amount of data going out from it. Any ideas would be welcome.

Speak for yourself I like my mobile tech to be well, mobile. I don't want a wifi only tablet but I do want a 4G/3G tablet to have wifi capabilities for when I am home. Your post is your opinion and I am more than willing to bet many many other people feel the same way.
I wouldn't want a WiFi only tablet ever.
In 3 billing days I've used about 100mb of data. Part of this is allowing the market to update stuff while I'm not on a wifi which I will have to be careful about.
My 1st bill is in btw and it was like 65 bucks.... that includes like 5 days of prorated service since my billing cycle apparantly starts on a different day than when I started my service
I keep mine in airplane mode off of wifi unless I really need it.
3g data overuse
I experienced a similar problem where my Xoom sucked up my entire 1GB dataplan in 5 days. I returned the device and said that I would wait for the iPad2. The guy convinced me to stick to the xoom and says if this was an issue people would be going nuts. He credited me the 1GB and bumped me to 5GB free for the next month if I would stick with the Xoom. I REALLY want to like it so I did. Well, the first day of my second Xoom sucked up 265MB, most of which was upload. I got smart an have TrafficStats installed. Turns out that most of the upload ~250 MB was the actually System trying to upload something. All other apps and services amounted to the other 15MB. Looks like I'll be taking this one back if someone can't figure out why the OS is uploaded crap. Part of me wonders if it isn't the fact that the Google Backup is checked. I wonder if it is actually uploaded all of the stuff on my device somewhere? Is it a coincidence that my application total is 270MB and the total bytes sent by the OS is 261MB????

Give me a break. Not "everyone" wants a wifi only Xoom, it must be nice having the universe revolve around you. There is definitely a market for a wifi only Xoom, but it is stupid to say that this is what everyone wants.
Christ all this melodramatic *****ing is getting old.
I mostly run off wifi at home and the office but definitely need the ability to connect when away from my wifi. I bought my xoom the first day it was out and have been using it ever since. By primarily sticking to wifi I should be able to come in under 2GB a month. It is important for me to have a connection whenever I need it though.

Even if it were Google backup, it would not be doing a full image backup every day. No the numbers suggest to me that we are overlooking something in your usage pattern. If you can (and are willing) try leaving the device on but not using it for 24 hours and see what the usage is.
I am not sure that I trust TrafficStats here and wonder if it is "running home to momma" when it can not identify the source of bandwidth usage. I believe the usage, just not necessarily the allocation by application.
I too am surprised by the amount of data my Xoom is consuming.
Typically I use about 1 Gb a month on my D1.
My Xoom has used 1.2 Gb in a week!
I am waiting for VZW to send me my password so I can get their Data Usage widget to work properly on my Xoom.
I have been on WiFi 90% of the time but I didn't realize until a couple of days ago that you also need to be in airplane mode or the Xoom NOM NOM NOM's the Gb's!
I have heard a few of you mention different apps that allow you to view data usage. Which do you recommend and why?
TIA

Yeah. There something "funny" definitely going on. There's a similar thread on the Motorola Support forums. Someone over there narrowed it down to auto-sync behavior. If you turn off auto-sync in setting the massive upload stops.
That may solve the upload problem but it should not be necessary! I'm not planning on activating 3G just yet, but after the LTE upgrade I may be more interested in activation. But not if auto-sync is a problem. I guess I could turn it off when I'm not on wifi. It's too bad there is not an option is settings to only auto-sync on wifi. Google are you listening?

AT&T top 5% data users?

Alright, I woke up this morning to a email from AT&T saying I'm in the 5% this month.
oi41 .tinypic. com/24uxkkl. jpg
This is the data that I have used.
oi42 .tinypic. com/2132oh .jpg
Is anybody else getting these emails at such a low amount of data use?
It's pretty stupid to say that you're at the 5% when you're only at 5 gigabytes, last month I used 20 gigabytes and didn't get anything.
Also please don't respond if you're just going to say "you can start using wifi." Well I can't, because this is my only way online where I live.
I just hit 8GB when i received the email.
Yeah, they also sent me a text about an hour ago saying,
" AT&T Free Msg: Your data usage this month is in the top 5% of users. Use Wi-Fi to help avoid reduced speeds in future bill cycles. Visit www .att. com/dataplans. "
This is kinda pissing me off now.
There ought to be some sort of audit on this.. I doubt 5g is in the top 5%

Apparently, anything over 4GB puts you into that category now. Two of my friends who have AT&T got that message and only use around 3-4GB a month.
Way to go AT&T, control your customers and take away their freedoms and what they pay for.
dang 4gbs? what do yall do on a phone to acheive that?
I get to 4gb when streaming video (wink)
At&t does this to try lessen the stress on their network.
They also use this as a scare tactic when users use "free" online services...
At&t should have at least said "Anybody over 2gb, will be throttled."
I highly doubt they even looked at how much data gets used per month before putting this into effect, it's like they just tossed out anything over 2gb as the 5%.
2Gb Warning
I got the message this morning and checked my data usage and it was 2.1GB
I used 13.2GB last bill and I never got the msg.
dang how do people reach so much data use?
I don't know, but The guy I know who works for the big red thinks I used alot of data.

Pandora, netflix, downloads, etc.
It's not hard to go over 2gb in a day... or even a few hours, without tethering.
After years of using AT&T I have never once had data throttled while averaging about 5 GB a months for the past year. still waiting for AT&T to say something because its like that on both my line and my wife's line where we use a combined 10GB a month.
I got the message this morning at 2.1Gb. Funny thing is, my download speeds have actually gotten better. I used to average 2-3Mbps down, 1-1.5 up, but after 3 speed tests, I'm running 4.5-5.5 down, .75 up. Throttle my upload speed all they want, I really don't care. But I'm definitely loving this new download speed. I don't know if this has anything to do with the Cingular 410 APN I'm using on my Galaxy Nexus.
Still, I find it ridiculous that AT&T is allowed to implement this kind of system without a means of releasing their tracking methods. Using the "top 5%" is such a asinine method of choosing who to throttle. IF they went ahead and just told grandfathered customers they would throttle past a particular GB, akin to what t-mobile is doing, it would make a lot more sense. Now, we have users stating they have reached anywhere from 2-13 gigs saying they have been placed in the "top 5%". I'm filing a complaint with the BBB petitioning AT&T to give us more information on how they distinguish who is in the top 5% of data consumption and to give us a better way of tracking our data usage compared to the others placed in the top 5%.
I've gotten the message for the past couple of months. They now say they will throttle at 5gb. Either we need to come up with a work around like tmo guys did on cm7 or I'm switching to sprint. Been with them for yrs now and I used 10 to 25 gb on my old dumb phone razr.

Thoughts on GB?

Hey all, I'm thinking I'll soon take the plunge to Gingerbread. For those who have flashed already, what are your thoughts? Any pros/cons, other than the standard benefits of Gingerbread?
I'm running stock gb right now, rooted, no CWM, no themes or mods and it works fine.
Cons:
Little harder to get Root(for me anyway) , doesn't play nice with superuser so had to switch to supersu. Some issues getting busybox installed and binary updated.
Mine shows 329mb of ram, so "lost" 9mb? Hasn't seemed to cause any problems.
Pros:
Ummm... It's gingerbread
Access to apps requiring 2.3, can watch tv now!
Love the new Batt stats and ram usage stats.
Did I mention it's gingerbread?
Definitely worth it, just make sure you do the calibration backup before you flash and should be no problems.

My phone was due for an upgrade tomorrow, so I figured why not, if I break it I can get a new phone. With that being said, I have to say there isn't much in terms of appearance that let's you know it is GB instead of Froyo. There is the ability to unlock into text messages or missed calls (that could have been done via lockers, but it is a lot smoother now). My weather app never worked and all of a sudden it is working again. The most impressive thing is the speed of it. I have Holo Launcher on my phone and it always lagged when going to the home screen. I haven't had that issue yet.
A couple of notes since it was my first "hooking my phone up to the computer to change software or flash" experience. The process went quick, no hang ups or anything like that. I had to call Verizon to get my phone calls working again, don't know why that happened. And I lost my 3G connection, but once again 20 minutes on the phone it was up and running. Less than 24 hours later, I am a happy camper. I have noticed that my phone shuts off sometimes without warning. But I haven't hit the power button on top and that seems to be working for now, in other words I wait for it to turn the screen off itself.
Definitely breathed new life into my old phone.
When I used this phone if the screen wasn't on when you plugged into the charger it wouldn't wake back up. This caused my to he late for work because I had a power outage at like 2am so it stopped charging then the power came back and my phone wouldn't wake so the alarm didn't go off. That was the only issue I had with gb when I used it. However once that happened I went back to stock. Other than that it was good. What phone are you thinking of getting?

Probably the Note 2. But the problem is that I have unlimited through Verizon and if I upgrade I lose that plan. It's not so much the unlimited I am worried about, but switching to the new plan actually costs me $10 a month. Over the course of a 2 year contract that is $240. Now if I buy the phone at full price I am ok, but I can't justify spending $700 on a phone.
As far as your issue, was that on GB or Froyo? I haven't had that problem, yet.
It was just on gb. Maybe I had a bad flash. I upgraded last month to a droid dna and I love it. After this phone I am never going back to samsung for phones. 3 people on my plan had the continuum and all went to HTC. Yeah I honestly hated my continuum at some times and other times I loved it. Though I held it for 2 years I agree with you I can't justify spending that much on a phone.
As for unlimited data that didn't bother me that I lost it. I never even used more than a gig when I had unlimited 3g was so slow I used wifi a lot. 4g is very fast but I still use my wifi when I can. There is a way to keep unlimited data my friend did it when he upgraded. I think you have to make a new line with unlimited data and transfer your upgrade to a line that has it. Something like that all I know is you can Google it if you want to keep it that bad. You may also get lucky and the rep may mess up and you keep unlimited this happened to my mom when she upgraded. Other than that to me 2gb of data is plenty for me.

yeah it's not so much I need the unlimited, it's that I will be paying more a month by switching. How does that even make sense? I will be paying $10 more a month for less data. Only with Verizon right?
Me too, the way they have the changes set up I only get my corporate discount rate on my line so even though I can get base price plan equal after discounts it ends up being more expensive.

Data usage out of control?

Ever since I got my Nexus 4 (from S3) my data usage has been really funky. I check both the T-Mobile my account app and the built in data monitor and apparently I'm using hundreds of megabytes of data within just days? That's not even possible, I'm on wifi more than half the time I even use my phone.
Can anyone help me figure out what's going on? I only have 2GB per month of 4G from T-Mobile and previously with my S3 I've only used about 1GB per month and I haven't changed my usage patterns from when I switched. This is starting to scare me because I heavily rely on data sometimes whether it be for school or finding a phone number online or navigation or whatever. I don't want to get throttled mid month.

that screenshot looks like normal data usage to me. i use more than 10gb-15gb a month, so hundreds of megabytes per day is average use. if you are worried about data use, dont use those apps that use/need data, or keep your data turned off until needed. and take control of you background apps/notifications, that uses your data without your knowledge of how much(but you let it). 2gb use for me takes about 5-6 days.
No offense to the guy who said he uses over 10 GB a month, but that's not normal usage. Most people get by just fine with much less. If I didn't stream from Google Play Music All Access, I'd never go over 2 GB. There are apps that will track data usage and find any excessive offenders (3G Watchdog is one). I don't know if that'll be more accurate or have more info than the stock meter. From the screenshot, you may just want to cut back on the Instagram.

i like using my device to the fullest, more than just streaming music, thats one reason why i buy only nexus devices. but youre right, most people use less than 2gb. until they start really using their device, less as a phone in the traditional sense, and more as a mobile internet(tethering too)/information/data/entertainment/gaming/crackflashing device.

But your main data usage is instagram, it would be pretty easy to cut that out unless on wifi.

[Q] Huge Increase in data usage!

I just change phones from the Galaxy S3 to a Note 3 on Verizon. Of course, they cancelled my unlimited data. They told me it shouldn't be a problem since my data history for 2 years has been between .8-1.4 gigs. Now that I've switched the first partial month was 4 GB and the second full month was nearly 6 GB. I have the phone set up the same as before and actually have not left the house/office nearly as much as usual due to recent changes in my business. Has anyone seen the insane increase in data usage and do you have any suggestions? Oddly, the main culprit seems the be my Email Exchange Server which is set to check every hour and is not set to push. I also have is set to only download attachments on WiFi. Internet searching on Chrome seems to use a ton also, considering how little I use it. I have notice at times that if the screen shuts off so does the WiFi. Any thoughts? Thank you!
Additionally, I have the stock android 4.4.2 update already installed and did not have that with my S3.
I didnt notice any increase (fascinate- razr- note 2- s4- note 3) Other than when I first got a 4g phone (razr) and only beacuse I was getting 150kbbs on 3g vs 25mbbs on 4g - started streaming/downloading more.
I wouldn't have given up that unlimited data though, Im keeping mine as long as possible.
You didn't mention if you have looked at data usage. That should tell you What is using the most data.

I wish I didn't have to give up the unlimited, but they made me get a new contact and there was no way to keep it.

Oddly, it is almost entirely my exchange email. Even the Verizon people said, on the really bad day, that it would be difficult to send that much email in one day. Especially with the download attachments checked to only happen on WiFi.

They lied to you then. To keep unlimited all you have to do is pay full price for the phone.

I still have mine and do not intend to get rid of it. Since they turned 4G on in my area a few months ago I've been using more data each month, I never use WiFi since I constantly have a 30-40MB 4G connection. I've used 77GB so far this month without tethering at all and there are still a couple days left in this billing cycle..
