Hey all, I'm thinking I'll soon take the plunge to Gingerbread. For those who have flashed already, what are your thoughts? Any pros/cons, other than the standard benefits of Gingerbread?
I'm running stock gb right now, rooted, no CWM, no themes or mods and it works fine.
Cons:
Little harder to get Root(for me anyway) , doesn't play nice with superuser so had to switch to supersu. Some issues getting busybox installed and binary updated.
Mine shows 329mb of ram, so "lost" 9mb? Hasn't seemed to cause any problems.
Pros:
Ummm... It's gingerbread
Access to apps requiring 2.3, can watch tv now!
Love the new Batt stats and ram usage stats.
Did I mention it's gingerbread?
Definitely worth it, just make sure you do the calibration backup before you flash and should be no problems.

My phone was due for an upgrade tomorrow, so I figured why not, if I break it I can get a new phone. With that being said, I have to say there isn't much in terms of appearance that let's you know it is GB instead of Froyo. There is the ability to unlock into text messages or missed calls (that could have been done via lockers, but it is a lot smoother now). My weather app never worked and all of a sudden it is working again. The most impressive thing is the speed of it. I have Holo Launcher on my phone and it always lagged when going to the home screen. I haven't had that issue yet.
A couple of notes since it was my first "hooking my phone up to the computer to change software or flash" experience. The process went quick, no hang ups or anything like that. I had to call Verizon to get my phone calls working again, don't know why that happened. And I lost my 3G connection, but once again 20 minutes on the phone it was up and running. Less than 24 hours later, I am a happy camper. I have noticed that my phone shuts off sometimes without warning. But I haven't hit the power button on top and that seems to be working for now, in other words I wait for it to turn the screen off itself.
Definitely breathed new life into my old phone.
When I used this phone if the screen wasn't on when you plugged into the charger it wouldn't wake back up. This caused my to he late for work because I had a power outage at like 2am so it stopped charging then the power came back and my phone wouldn't wake so the alarm didn't go off. That was the only issue I had with gb when I used it. However once that happened I went back to stock. Other than that it was good. What phone are you thinking of getting?

Probably the Note 2. But the problem is that I have unlimited through Verizon and if I upgrade I lose that plan. It's not so much the unlimited I am worried about, but switching to the new plan actually costs me $10 a month. Over the course of a 2 year contract that is $240. Now if I buy the phone at full price I am ok, but I can't justify spending $700 on a phone.
As far as your issue, was that on GB or Froyo? I haven't had that problem, yet.
It was just on gb. Maybe I had a bad flash. I upgraded last month to a droid dna and I love it. After this phone I am never going back to samsung for phones. 3 people on my plan had the continuum and all went to HTC. Yeah I honestly hated my continuum at some times and other times I loved it. Though I held it for 2 years I agree with you I can't justify spending that much on a phone.
As for unlimited data that didn't bother me that I lost it. I never even used more than a gig when I had unlimited 3g was so slow I used wifi a lot. 4g is very fast but I still use my wifi when I can. There is a way to keep unlimited data my friend did it when he upgraded. I think you have to make a new line with unlimited data and transfer your upgrade to a line that has it. Something like that all I know is you can Google it if you want to keep it that bad. You may also get lucky and the rep may mess up and you keep unlimited this happened to my mom when she upgraded. Other than that to me 2gb of data is plenty for me.

yeah it's not so much I need the unlimited, it's that I will be paying more a month by switching. How does that even make sense? I will be paying $10 more a month for less data. Only with Verizon right?
Me too, the way they have the changes set up I only get my corporate discount rate on my line so even though I can get base price plan equal after discounts it ends up being more expensive.

I went from unlimited to 2gb and I didn't have to pay any more than I was paying before. I'm not the primary line if that makes a difference.

Being a N1 owner, what made you buy a N1 now? With NS coming and a lot of superior phones out atm... The N1 multi-touch problem makes it very undesirable to purchase now I think, as its poor GPU and speakers.
If you can, I think returning it may be a good idea, usually have like 14 days to return these things no?
Whats the price of a N1 now? Most likely not the inicial 500$. If im not mistaken it can be around 250$ for developers or something? If that is the price i think it is the best phone in the market in quality/price relation.
Sorry but I don't like samsung phones at all plus the nexus s seems to b just another galaxy s with gingerbread and no sdcard slot.had the evo since release and fully modded but had lotta hardware issues.but the n1 is GSM quadband unlocked phone when I go overseas I don't have to buy another phone.believe it or not the n1 still pricy but I got a good deal and took it with the Google n1 dock and so far I'm happy with the phone.thank u guys

one last question: will t-mobile charge me extra $ if i use the wifi tethering thats included in the N1 froyo(without root)? unlimited data is already included in my plan.thanks
They shouldn't charge you more. I've been tethering for years now since the winmo days and from the carriers perspective the source of the data is extremely difficult to determine, they will simply be able to see that you are using data. I think that the "unlimited" data on T-Mobile has a 5GB cap, but I may be wrong.

Recently T-mobile changed the cap to 5Gb. If your contract was signed before that date you have a 10 Gb cap, if it was signed after that date you will have a 5Gb cap. I forget the day though. It was only a few months ago.
It's not a hard cap, they just reserve the right to reduce bandwidth at that point...

I have been debating with myself on whether or not to get a galaxy tab. I was wanting to hear from anybody who was a former Evo owner. Does the tab seem a lot bulkier than the Evo? Would you go back to the Evo if you had a chance? I have seen some belt clips for the tab. Does it feel comfortable or does it feel like you have a book glued to your hip.
Former Evo user here:
In terms of bulk, you'd be surprised to know the Tab is actually thinner than the Evo. Of course you'll be carrying a 7" device as opposed to a 4" device so that does take some getting used to. As a woman, I carry it in my purse so I can't actually answer your question on the holster since I don't use one.
I have completely moved from my Evo to the Tab- I downgraded my Evo plan which, with insurance and taxes less my discount, was around $85/month. I moved it down to the basic Talk 200 which is $29.99 and ported my new Tab number to it and switched my old Evo number to the Tab (keep in mind if you choose to do this, you'll need some old windows phone on the Talk 200 plan since the Evo can only have that Everything Data plan). I did the tweak in the development section and now make and receive calls on the Tab. That in addition to the 2GB data and unlimited texts on my plan leave me set in terms of an all-in-one mobile device.
Ultimately, I'm saving money now. My Tab plan is $29.99 plus the $29.99 for the Talk 200- without insurance, plus taxes and less my discount, I should be paying around $50 a month. While I do miss the Evo, no I wouldn't go back.
Thanks for the info. If I get a tab it will be to completely replace the Evo as I would be selling(i.e. "giving") it to my brother in law and he would use it on our plan instead of his intercept and I would be using the tab exclusively. He and I both have been disappointed with the Intercept that he has and he would like to get an Evo. The Evo I have allowed me to give up my pmp and just use the Evo. The tab would allow me to give up my Kindle as well and have a truly all in one device.
evo to tab adjustments
Just recently switched from an Evo to an AT&T GT. It definitely takes some getting used to if the Tab becomes your primary phone. I use a headset, but now I realize just how much I fiddle with my phone while I do other things.
As for the additional bulk--I pretend I'm carrying around a day organizer, and it feels less weird, other than the fact that I'm carrying my day organizer every time I get up to go somewhere.
I have been trying to read as much as I can in forums about it. Is this correct that the sprint version can be rooted but you cannot flash a recovery image to it?

That is an awesome plan! I have both the evo and tab from sprint. I would consider leaving the evo, but evo dev community here at xda is awesome plus I have 4g tether...
But still im really considering that option, hopefully sprint will do a material change on thier contracts
Out of curisity, which tweek method did you use?
I can only receive calls with sipdriod and csip. The line2 app wont connect anymore for some reason.
And have you measured your data useage per call?

I'm making calls using CSIP- it took me a looooooong time to get it to work. I kept encountering the error whereas I could receive calls but couldn't make calls. Don't know why. All I did was keep restarting the instructions over and over from the beginning until it finally started working.
That's a good question regarding data usage per call- if there is a way to measure usage per call please let me know and I can test is out. For the most part I'm always on a wireless network. When I leave a wireless network it bounces over to 3G data usage. I think I recall making one call via 3G and it was for 3 minutes so nothing really major. I just checked my data usage online- so far in the 2 weeks I had the plan, I've used 10mb of my 2GB.
While I miss the XDA community roms (was on Myn's ROM), can't really say I ever used 4G (and I live in a 4G area). 3G is good enough for me. HTH.

Just an FYI, but personally I would not give up my Kindle because of my Tab.
IMO, the Tab is great for occasional reading, but the Kindle's e-ink is vastly superior for extended reading.
Your mileage may vary of course, but I'd wait until you've had both in your hands for a few weeks before deciding to drop the Kindle.

Dave

Hey all.. am definitely a noob.. i was just throttle, i have a mytouch 4g(unlimited everything) so they say. they shouldve throttle my text msg usage rather than my hsdpa.. isnt there a / an easier way to unthrottle my data speed maybe with an app or doing something else.. i read up on the steps.. From the original listed steps posted it says you have to be unthrottle before you apply the change.. so it wouldnt make sense to try it.. my phone isn't rooted yet.. i was thinking about using visionary+... please, please help in anyway possible... at least something fairly easy... thanks
first things first, when does the new billing cycle start? if it's just a few days away, you may not want to dive into rooting if you are not familiar with it..
secondly, if you read the throttling thread, you will see a few had success of getting unthrottled after being throttled. Cant confirm this, but I would say worth the try..
New billing cycle start every 7th of the month....its just frustrating when i listen to Pandora or trying to download something, its soooo slow.. especially Pandora... i mean i was kinda embarrassed, because at my job i hooked up my phone to the speaker so when all can listen to music instead of repeated songs from radio... but it just started cutting the songs, slowing down and skipping... and yes i do have Pandora One...even if i cant do the service.jar mod, if i could just modify my phone a little and do get some data boost that would be lovely................
however, i also tried using visionary to temp root my phone and root explorer to modify the "build.prop" still no luck... but funny after changing the values after i reboot the numbers go back to the same....just frustrated....
Thanks for your response......
And a funny thing happened last billing cycle, when i was throttled down, A/(one) day before the new cycle started i was unthrottled, but what i did was something somebody did, the switched to edge(gsm) for a day or so, then switched back to gsm/wcdma auto.. and claimed it worked for them...i tried for about 2days and i did a speed test, found out my speed was unthrottled( and this was a day before my new billing cycle started)..
The easiest thing to do would be to upgrade your data package, I'm currently on a 10 gig/month plan. Also, store some music to your phone and play from that.
Lastly, use wifi when you can.
Hope this helps.

I give up... just going to deal with the disappointment.. anyway.. thanks all..
Just move over to Sprint. I used 10 gigs yesterday downloading torrents! Ha! Those build.prop and classes.dex solutions never worked for me and i was rooted. Save yourself the frustration. But maybe it will work for you some ppl had success.
i kinda try those two things but no real luck....but one thing i've come to find out is that it all has something to do with the sim card... if i can find a way to reset the data reading on my sim card then am good...yeah i still have a whole year before my contract is up...sprint seem to be on top of their game....
Nvm
-Figured i needed a signature for my phone. This is it......
lol...
well, ill keep trying things...i know there is a way to do this, not just on there end..damn
I also mean i'm open for ideas...things that have worked for you.. please post them...eg(changing apn, removing sim card over night etc)...thanks
Hey.. since most of us have already upgraded to Gingerbread and there's no official way to root your phone with gingerbread.. even with visionary etc... has anyone been throttled and how well does this app really work.(how many ppl have used it and can say it really works under gingerbread. thanks)> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16369920
tried it but no such luck on my end, but I used it after being throttled, will try again in the next billing cycle before being throttled
when you was throttled, did your speed get very low.. say 56k or you had some improvement?
no improvement just did a speed test I'm at 31kbps
I don't care what anyone say.. when they throttle you.. edge, 3g, 4g.. all gets throttled.

Stop using so much data is a good way not to be throttled. wifi is an option as well.
If you are sucking so much data that you use the 5gigs they give you a month then honestly you deserve to be throttled back. Trying to bypass the throttle will led to caps and more cost in the end.
Just my two cents.

yea im thinking same right now Sprint is the only one that gives true unlimited service but their rates are ridiculous. Im guessing tmobile got alot of complaints regarding their use of the word unlimited n leaving out the detail that its not really unlimited cause in the new commercial the guy who talks fast kinda like the fine print mentions the throttle after 2gb or 5gb of data its 20$ extra for 5gb. they got a new plan tho 49.99 2 lines unlimited everything might wanna look into it not sure if its only for first time customers or not but if its not im all on it.
I'm on Sprint and ready to upgrade my Hero. The problem though is that the Hero has left me very hesitant to buy a phone with a custom skin, and I will not spend my money on a non-stock Android phone. Is the Nexus S 4G still a good phone compared to current dual core phones or should I just wait until Sprint gets the Galaxy Nexus?
I went from the hero to the NS4G when they had them for $30 after rebate and such, and I don't regret it at all. Even running stock it blows the hero away. Could that perception change over the next 2 years? Sure, but after dealing with the hero being pretty inadequate from the get go I doubt that it will be anything I can't deal with. The only complaint i have found is that the external speaker volume is about half of the hero. I can't pay ~$200+ for a phone any more.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G running CM7/franco.Kernel
Depends on the amount of money you want to spend. The NS4G is a fine phone and I enjoy it and like dpeeps the only complaint I would have is the speaker on it. I like to listen to podcast on my phone, when I'm at home I still listen to em on the Hero, I pretty much use the Hero it as a iPod/MP3Player type device now.
I had to make this same decision back in August and am so happy that I did. There will always be faster, prettier, better...etc. phones coming out so you just have to accept that. I haven't ran into 1 problem yet with my Nexus and I'm not leaving Sprint so for me it's the best phone they had and still have available. I'll upgrade once they get their LTE system in place and phones to work on it.
Good to hear that it is still a very capable phone! I was planning on buying it used off of Craigslist or eBay so that I can save my upgrade for the Galaxy Nexus, if Sprint gets it. I remember when the NS4G came out that a lot of people were complaining about the reception on it and I was wondering if it had ever gotten fixed or if it was ever a real problem to begin with.
Quad Core phones should be coming by springtime. LTE or not, that's what I'm waiting to jump on

I also have a Hero and I'm ready to upgrade. I'll also be getting a Nexus S, but I'm waiting until Friday because it's going to be free! I can't post links because I lurk a lot, but if you check out phandroid's Hero news (or sprintfeed.com, where they got the article from), Sprint is giving away Nexus S' on Black Friday.

Seems for some people it really was an issue, supposedly a update fixed it, I was one of the ones that never had any reception issue so can't say.
ns4g is already really outdated in todays mobile market
spending a few hundred bucks for a phone your going to use for maybe a month or 2 seems a little ridiculous.
you should save the money.
and if i were you i wouldnt wait for the galaxy nexus on sprint, i would jump ship to another carrier like im planning on doing. (with sprint for 9 years now)
sprint reception is getting worse and worse, their data speeds are getting slower and slower
just yesterday we had major problems, couldnt make or recieve calls or send texts.
i would highly consider switching carriers.
that being said if you want to stay on sprint the epic touch is a really amazing phone, held back by its carrier.
good luck
Outdated is probably a stretch. The phone is more than capable of handling anything a dual core phone can handle. I'm sure there's some few exceptions, but spending a few hundred bucks on anything that's as disposable as a mobile phone these days isn't too bright. Wait a couple months and they all become exponentially cheaper on some sale or rebate.

Well do you like huge phones?? The Galaxy Nexus is HUGE...Well if you absolutely need a new phone just now then get a Nexus S 4g. If you can wait a few months to see what comes out then the Galaxy Nexus will probably be worth the wait....
I was thinking about getting a nexus s too. But, does it bother anybody that it doesn't have a notification LED? I hadn't heard about the speakers.

Nexus is free all weekend plus u also get $25 in free new Google wallet.
So not bad for a newer phone.
And yes of course u still have to pay taxes and activation
But
It's unavoidable in any new phone purchase

Most of the kernels include a mod called BLN that allows you to turn on/blink the capacitive buttons on notification. The LED light is a little more obvious but it I've gotten used to it.

Well I'm getting the Nexus S soon. It may be outdated but it still is a great phone considering that it is free until Monday but I really just want a phone that will get the latest Android updates wether its official or not. Galaxy Nexus is also great but no one knows when Sprint will get it or its price.

How does this allow you to save your upgrade? Will Sprint do an ESN swap from the Hero onto the Nexus and keep you on your existing contract? I too am interested in saving my upgrade until the new LTE network is in place, but would love a new(er) phone in the meantime.

Sprint makes it easy to swap really... Just log into the sprint website and find the option in there. It asks for the numbers located on the back of the phone under the battery and then transfers your service to the new phone. Your old one should still have a clean ESN and be good to sell. My family has gone the eBay route a few times now to save our upgrades.
And really to anyone talking about only going for pure stock Android phones or waiting for the galaxy nexus, your missing out lol... Take 5 minutes on a 1ghz phone with Sense and you'll be hooked. The Hero just didn't have the power to handle it. And the Galaxy Nexus is really kind of a letdown tbh. In literally 3 months we'll see 2+ ghz quadcores and higher than 8 megapixel cameras as a bonus. And 4.0 ICS will be all over the place by then

Nice, thanks for the info. I did an ESN swap once before with Sprint when I bought a phone from wirefly.com, but that was with an upgrade. I didn't realize they'd allow it while still under contract.

Thanks for all of the advice on the NS4G. I decided to go with the E4GT after using my brother's phone over Thanksgiving break. It will suit my needs just fine for the next two years.

Per chance do you know if this works with the old non-premium data plans? If I swap ESNs will they want to charge me the $10 a month "premium data" plan for a smartphone? I'm boycotting upgrading until this goes away. I mean my heroc does everything I need and we've almost got ICS there, I don't see a reason to upgrade. (Yes armv7/front camera/dual core/soon to be LTE would be nice but those aren't "necessities" imo)

The $10 fee is just for any data plan now I think, and its here to stay There isn't a loophole there though I don't think. If you switch to a 4G phone they'll probably slap it on there.
I just bought my Nexus S off of Ebay lol, so ill find out next week. The touchscreen on my Hero is starting to cut out and I still wanna save my upgrade

I just change phones from the Galaxy S3 to a Note 3 on Verizon. Of course, they cancelled my unlimited data. They told me it shouldn't be a problem since my data history for 2 years has been between .8-1.4 gigs. Now that I've switched the first partial month was 4 GB and the second full month was nearly 6 GB. I have the phone set up the same as before and actually have not left the house/office nearly as much as usual due to recent changes in my business. Has anyone seen the insane increase in data usage and do you have any suggestions? Oddly, the main culprit seems the be my Email Exchange Server which is set to check every hour and is not set to push. I also have is set to only download attachments on WiFi. Internet searching on Chrome seems to use a ton also, considering how little I use it. I have notice at times that if the screen shuts off so does the WiFi. Any thoughts? Thank you!
Additionally, I have the stock android 4.4.2 update already installed and did not have that with my S3.
I didnt notice any increase (fascinate- razr- note 2- s4- note 3) Other than when I first got a 4g phone (razr) and only beacuse I was getting 150kbbs on 3g vs 25mbbs on 4g - started streaming/downloading more.
I wouldn't have given up that unlimited data though, Im keeping mine as long as possible.
You didn't mention if you have looked at data usage. That should tell you What is using the most data.

I wish I didn't have to give up the unlimited, but they made me get a new contact and there was no way to keep it.

Oddly, it is almost entirely my exchange email. Even the Verizon people said, on the really bad day, that it would be difficult to send that much email in one day. Especially with the download attachments checked to only happen on WiFi.

They lied to you then. To keep unlimited all you have to do is pay full price for the phone.

I still have mine and do not intend to get rid of it. Since they turned 4G on in my area a few months ago I've been using more data each month, I never use WiFi since I constantly have a 30-40MB 4G connection. I've used 77GB so far this month without tethering at all and there are still a couple days left in this billing cycle..
