NFC range - Galaxy S III General

Does anyone know if there is any way we could extend the range of the NFC ? I know it's in the battery but could we add an antenna. I am aware this could be a weird mod that would not be very practical but could it be done ?

I don't think so...
The range doesn't depend on the dimension of the antenna, rather depend on the transmission power of the NFC chip (but I'm not sure )

i have never used NFC on my device..does anyone know if using an extended battery affects your nfc range?
i use a 7000mAh Zerolemon battery

If u use extended battery to recharge original battery with NFC antena it should work normaly.

Wouldn't make any difference, because even if you extended the range on the phone the device you connecting to only has a few MM range so couldn't communicate with the phone because of NFC chip limitations since it only has limited power to reply.

hmm thanks 4 reply

As Michael_P pointed out,
you're not only sending energy to get the tag working, but also for the tag to send data back.
A higher range (possible with another antenna and chip) would be unsecure and would drain your battery faster (not shure how much though)
If it's for a specific project of yours, you could use active NFC tags, which have their own power supply.
But the NFC chip and NFC antenna are most likely specially designd for each other.
Fitting another antenna for higher reach will only work, if there were more power from the chip, which there isn't.
A friend and I played around with big rfid equippment for clothing stores last week (the stuff they hide at the exit to scan you for stolen products)
The antenna was huge with about 50cmx30cmx3cm.
The controlling unit was about the size of an S3^^ but thicker
And an extra PowerSupplyUnit (~10x10x20) (I don't remember, but could ask for the Output Power)
The reach of that thing was about 2 meteres for simple rfid-cards (wich is basically the same as nfc)

NFC range depends on your battery so you can not extend it by any tweak i guess

Non-HTC batteries can disable GPS?

According to a review on pdashop.nl, their 3rd party battery makes the GPS not work because, according to HTC, it lacks a metal cross that is supposedly part of the GPS antenna?...
Anyone heard of this? I am looking at getting me a 2880mAh extended battery (with OEM cover) to improve the phone's useable battery life...
That's nonsense.. I have a mugen and still have good gps. Just buy your batt.

I worried about getting backup batteries that don't have that cross, but I got a 1600 mAh standard size, and GPS works fine.
I still have not seen any explanation of the purpose of the metal cross on the OEM battery - does anyone know?
I imagine it assists with heat dissipation.
I still believe that it's an R/F shield, probably to pass some stray emission spec.
I have various backup batteries and GPS also works perfectly fine. I concur with the screen + ariel explanation, in that it "may" enhance the gps (perhaps?) about .00000001%. Like wearing socks on your feet helps protect you in a thunderstorm (LMAO)

What have you done for battery life so far?

So as I mentioned in the battery life thread, in the T-Mo store, the Galaxy was reporting 2d5h on and still had 32% left in the tank. Obviously that is without SetCPU or anything and people have to have been playing with it. Even not, 30%/day not being touched is pretty good. What have you guys done for battery life? Have you noticed the "ramp up" time that is always claimed by cell phone manufacturers? Mine has sucked today but I've been beating the hell out of it. I'm going to charge it and let it stay unplugged overnight to see what the standby drain is but what is everyone doing? Have you messed with SetCPU at all?
Thx

Who cares, I'm buying 2 spare batteries from Ebay, just like I had for my G1. I can go thru all 3 batteries on my G1 while at work for 10hrs. So, I'm assuming I will get similar results.

Haha I know what you mean. That's what I love about having a removable battery. Who cares right? Swap it out and you're good.
As for my experience, the battery live has been good. The battery status bar up top is not accurate though. Similar to the reception (bar) problem how it shows no bars but you actually have great signal. I'm sure a software fix will be available soon for this. Very minor.
Here are some things you can do to improve battery life:
Remove all unnecessary widgets off your screen. I had an analog clock on there and when I removed it, I noticed better battery life just from that. No joke.
Turn off the live wallpapers. Those drain battery too.
Turn off wifi if not using it
Turn off bluetooth
Set the notifications to refresh at a longer interval instead of like every 5 mins etc...
If you're really nit picky, check "use only 2g networks..." - I personally wouldn't.
Adjust your screen to the lowest brightness. I love that it's an SAMOLED screen, because I could never get by with the lowest setting on other lcd screens.
Hope this helps man...enjoy!

By the way....regarding non-OEM batteries....I do notice that they are all 1500mAh (like oem), but I've always had a stigma about putting generic batteries into expensive devices.
I guess where my stigma comes from is due to my past experience with my digital camera, when I took photos of a wedding and my files got corrupted. My only explanation was because I was using a non-oem battery, because ever since that I've only used oem batteries along with that same memory card and have never had a problem since. It's been 3 years.
Since the non-oem batteries are 1500mAh, it shouldn't matter right? Now that I think about it, I do remember the camera batteries being of a higher mAh than the original battery...I know this only has to do with the capacity, but as for the voltage output, could there have been a strange surge to cause the corruption?
I know I'm just being paranoid, but just thought I'd get some input from those who know about the mechanics of batteries and the likelihood of any malfunction due to it being a cheap non-oem battery made in china.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
My biggest battery drain was use wireless networks was disabled by default. All apps that tried to get my location therefore turned on GPS. One widget was bugged and would keep using GPS, killing my battery overnight. Uninstalled the widget and enabled use wireless networks and only lost a percent or two overnight. Make sure the GPS icon is not consistently on when not using Google Maps and whatnot.

This didn't really do anything for me. Under usage it definitely uses less battery than my N1 but standby SUCKS. How did the one in the store get 2+ days. I switched from GSM/CDMA Auto PRL to just GSM Auto PRL. I am switching back. WCDMA Preferred actually got me better battery on the N1.

The Amps and Volts are important, but in a battery is only a small part of it. The quality matters, the drain matter, it's max input matters, it's sensitivity to fluctuation, sensitivity to over charge... etc etc etc...
That being said, most modern devices these days have a lot of internal fail safes that should try to stop anything crazy from happening... because really the battery could have any amount of amp hours rated to it, how much it can and will output is what matters though. You could theoretically make a battery the size of a car battery for the thing that with 1500AH (aka 1,500,000mAH) would give you a retarded amount of standby time as long as it was rated about the same on everything else... although charge that thing wrong and you would have a pretty cool fireball...
an app called juice defender seems to work pretty good for me on the vibrant (ultimate juice is the paid version with all the features). I previously used it on my cliq and had good results also.
what it does is disables apn and/or wifi and you choose what intervals it comes back on. example - you could have it come on every 15 minutes for 1 minute at a time to complete necessary syncs. you can also set up night schedules etc.
I would recommend this app if you're lookin to save some battery. it also has a little widget to show you how much battery you have saved. not sure how accurate that is though. good luck!

I stopped caring. As long as it has enough to charge to stay on between unplugging it in the morning, and plugging it up at night, I'm golden. I've had the phone since launch, and I've only charged it up twice, so that's about two days between charges. I got it with a roughly 60% charged battery.
I use BatteryLife by Curvefish to see my battery usage.

Galaxy S/Vibrant charger is 5v @ .7A. I think I read that the N1 wall charger is 5v @ 1A. It'll charge a little faster, and will probably heat up the battery more, but it shouldn't destroy the phone. I'm sure somebody smarter will correct me, though.

Actually there is only one, but this one is 2cell battery. Li-Po batteries come in cells, one cell is 3,7V. So you can build them like legos. You can add cells in series to increase voltage (1S 3,7V, 2S 7,4V, 3S 11,1V) or in parallel to increase endurance (1S 3,7V 2500mAh + in parallel 1S 3,7V 2500mAh = 1S2P 3,7V 5000mAh).
Is there a teardown guide for our tablet?
Yes, several of them.
So would this battery have a longer life than the stock battery?

Theres two 3260 bats. In teardowns it looks as though its one because both are together.
Nop. Only one, but inside this one are two cells. So only one battery.
Theres two 3260s. Not one. If there is only one 3260 I doubt our tabs would last as long as it already does. Call it one or two batteries whatever, like the specs say, 3260x2
Look. There is only one battery 7,4V 3260mAh 24WH Li-Po in our Iconia. Inside this battery are two Li-Po cells each 3,7V 3260mAh connected in series so capacity remain the same only voltage is doubled. My laptop has 9 cell battery but I'm not saying that I have 9 batteries. You can google by yourself for battery code 934TA001F you'll see only one baterry.
Ok. Sorry. Geegz. I still love you.

It's annoying, isn't it? So many people today just don't know the difference between a cell and a battery. Makes you wonder what they hell they teach in science class these days...
For those who get confused... A battery is ONLY a battery when there are multiple cells inside, linked either in series for parallel. If there's just one cell, then it's NOT a battery, it's a cell.
has anyone tried buying this yet and see if it works

They didn't teach about batteries in my science classes in highschool, nor in college. That was all in an electronics class I took for my ANSI certification.
Good luck buying one, minimum order is 100. I wonder what price per unit is, I'll email them and check details. I've made orders through them before, it's not too bad.

How to change your battery capacity

(Must be rooted)
Use Root Explorer or Equivalent.
(Can adb or command pull/ push with line if your know how inside twrp or on pc)
DIRECTORY: /etc/floating_feature.xml
Open it and Scroll or search until you see the capacity String value ...
Change it to the MAH of your desired battery.
Disclaimer: Any edits being made to batteries, charge speeds, % values, etc , can cause fires,
Do these at your own risk.
What is the purpose of this?

Theoretically, to make use of a larger capacity battery or else it'll show the same stock capacity regardless of it's real capacity.
Now I don't know how it is For S7/Edge or Samsung devices but I previously owned several HTC devices. The last I had was One S and it could accomodate the battery from One XL (same size but bigger capacity). Many have tried and replaced it but even the new capacity was shown correctly, phone wasn't using it at full. After researches it came out that, for effectively using a bigger capacity battery it was needed a new kernel compiled to make use of the new battery capacity.
My point is that, you might need that as well here and I really doubt that anyone can compile from source a kernel for Exynos that can contain such changes as I know that sources are proprietary not open. You might fit a bigger capacity battery but it could be that you won't benefit from it's increased size

There are reference files in the kernel ...
They reference battery capacity...
They are based off of a capacity % value
Basically an of/if command ... so in theory...
(Update: the theory was correct)
And a framework.res edit did suffice.
The file inside of framework-res res/xml/power_profile.xml
referenced a 3600mah battery ...
And the purpose of this is of course...
an aftermarket , fully synced , and properly programmed battery @ larger capacity 4200mah

you can break out ohms law and calculate power
( find something that runs off the same voltage , and run the tests yourself for discharge rate @ hours )
Yamaha169 said:
Well, to me... thats arguing a moot point...
Thats like asking me how i know im getting a gallon of gas at the pump.
But... the evidence is in the calculation of the user ... because there are FAR too many variables ...
There are applications that track power loss by MAH (mili-amp hour) if you use over the stock MAH rating... it would have a larger storage capacity.
Or you can break out ohms law and calculate power , disect this battery and beat your head against a post ..

im sorry my english isn't that good but i think the capacity of this battery is not related to the user nor there are many variables.
Probably i didnt used the right words but what i was asking for is for example:
Connect the battery to a constant current load and measure the time it takes to discharge the battery to a certain voltage.
Capacity in Ah = Current in Amperes * Time in hours
that would give a good overview of the real capacity without using a fishy app or harassing a post

So anyone else thinking what im thinking HARD MODS baby. im a anti-government privacy pirate android junkie so naturally i take the camera modules out and im working on the GPS modules but i hav an idea to hav 2 batterys present in the phone now ive alrdy figured out how to mak the room but i need help wit the proper wiring set up. note in order to mak room the wireless copper charging coil will need to b removed "MAYBE" and the originally backin will need a cut out to accommodate the second battery as well as the internal frame<---thats 4 sure then simply apply a slickwrap to cover up
ADDed info: my main concern is the voltage from 2 batterys i know enough that doubling the voltage is bad [rlly bad lol, kill main board etc kinda bad] but doubling the battery capacity from 3220mah to 6440mah isnt CONCERN FIXED ONLY A PROBLEM IF CONNECTED IN SERIES NOT WEN IN PARALLEL ALSO VOLTAGE ON BOTH BATTERIES NEEDS TO B DAM NEAR THE SAME DEAD NUTS THE SAME
Dual battery mods completed safely and successfully on:
nexus 4 - https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/general/4200mah-nexus-4-internal-battery-t2239829
samsung s3 - https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/accessories/samsung-4200mah-battery-mod-t1800177
Next issue is a minor soft mod which we'll need insight on the software file on the device the lists the 3220mah will need to b changed these/thise file could b used to calculate the correct battery percent to b shown in status bar or battery stat page in settings IF WE'RE GONNA DO THIS LETS DO IT 169% BABY
so a OEM battery is thin and cheap enough that i mite add 2 batteries instead, 3 in total

Just a thought, but couldn't you just remove the camera.apks and any files related to GPS? I would imagine that if the files are either not present or disabled that relate to camera and GPS, I would imagine if those things do not work on your phone then big G would not be able to access them either as the files needed are present... hope this makes sense. That way no hardware removal needed.
That being said... an extra battery would be cool

agreed but ive done both alrdy to b safe, they could push/sideload wirelessly the files needed to use camera modules my main focus is the dual battery mod any input on the wiring set up unfortunately i dont no much bout batterys to pull this off
as of now with almst perfect conditions i can get round 8hrs SOT but i need more, mmmm battery whore, 8hrs SOT wit 23hrs phone idle, heavy use overclocked games PSP emulater 2.5hrs SOT wit 18hrs phone idle and min. use 3.5hrs SOT 7-9days phone idle not bad but i need better dual better
You must be into some majorly illegal **** if you are doing all this paranoid bull**** to your phone

Not really too much. As all the fuctionality is still there. The only thing missing is the UI. You could still activate it by command line. Couldnt snap a pic or anything but you could activate the camera and then stream it to where ever if there is a data connection.

Not at all. There are some that really do think that the Government is too wrapped up in our lives. There are also companies that require your cell phone to not have a camera.
Too many people these days have no idea about privacy. They have freely given it up. It is good to see someone that looks around at the world he lives in.
Why do you think the government cares about spying on you, specifically? You sound intelligent, did you discover something you weren't supposed to? The government probably isn't the entity you should be worrying about. Walmart secretly owns Google. They are trying to achieve consumer omnipotence. They watch and listen to everything you do and say just so they know what products to sell you.
If you are this worried about it, you should know that at any point, they could send a signal to your phone causing it to go into "kill mode". The battery will send out a high intensity discharge of 50amps causing your heart to stop. If you are lucky enough to survive this, the battery explodes in an attempt to destroy the evidence. They haven't got the system working perfectly yet, that's why we saw all those note 7s blowing up.
They can send the kill mode signal to any phone, even non smart phones, so you probably shouldn't carry a phone. Or just buy the products they advertise to appease them. Your choice, I've probably said too much.

As for me. IT is part of the job. I work in many places that requires them to check on you from time to time. Heck the types of places I work even can dictate what type of device you can own and have with you. You also have to understand that there are things you can do to put yourself on thier watch list. It really isnt to hard to do really.
I perfect example is I was helping my son with a presentation on religious history and after downloading the Quran and was questioned about it less then a week later

What else were you searching for, roofing nails(for that pesky leak) and pressure cookers (I have tomatoes to can, OK)?
All kidding aside, the amount of information out there on your average cell user is insane. Even before smartphones they could obtain a massive amount of information just from metadata.
I totally have respect for OP. Thanks for taking this thing apart, seeing how it ticks and deciding to make it tick different. Kudos on your cajones, sir!

Camera: put a piece of electrical tape over the lens or buy a pack of colored round stickers from the dollar tree and put one of the black ones over the lens. OR just take black paint, black marker etc and black it out
Tracking: turn off GPS, uninstall any and all apps
Last step:
Seek medical help for your mental issues

You really dont think that turning off GPS on a device with the FEMA chip in it does any good do you?
Sometimes it is amazing how much people really dont know goes on in the world.

Lulwut, FEMA chip?
Just glad we're not down that far on the 1984 road as you guys are over there (just yet). But FEMA chip? Any serious sources for that?
And questioning because of Quran searches? That PATRIOT act sure messed up something about your democracy if that is even remotely true.

You have no idea. That act was the dumbest thing people did and all because of the heat of the moment. They didnt read it and then got mad about it when they saw they gave the gov the right to monitor them.
You have not been around for long huh? The FEMA chip has been in devices for years. Search around. There are plenty of talks about it. Not sure if the FCC blueprints are still on the site but worth a look. There was a huge deal about it as it showed at one time to be connected to the mic and GPS moduals. Mind you this only applies to the US. This is part of the reason why our devs here prefer to get the EU models of devices.

actually nope jus dont thinks its rite that ppl can c where i am and what im doin simply as that
For the batteries, connect them in parallel. + to +, - to -. I've done it on other phones and it works fine. I'm not sure how it would react with quickcharge, but I think it would be fine. I've actually been considering doing it on this phone as my battery is starting to show it's age. If I do, I will 3D print a frame and soft outer case much like how the ZeroLemon battery kit for the Note 3 was done.
Since you seem unsure about parallel vs series wiring, please read up on proper handling for lipo cells. I would not want to see anyone make their own Note 7 firebomb.
If you put the charging coil behind a battery, it won't work. Might as well save space and remove it. You might be able to relocate it to the outside battery.
If you are really concerned about GPS and camera, you should disconnect them or otherwise damage them. Can't do much about the mic though. If the GPS is marked, you can probably find a datasheet for it, then just cut the trace for power. Practice on an old PCB if you haven't done this before, you can cause serious damage to the board if you do it wrong. If a state level actor or good hacker is involved, they can still get rough location via cell towers, wifi IDs, and Stingrays. If you are really concerned, you should probably not carry a phone at all, or keep a metalized pouch with you to put it in (faraday cage).
After Snowden, and having worked in some environments, I get where people are coming from with it. In some cases it's not that people are doing anything wrong, they just want to have more control over their privacy. Not everyone wants their lives all over the internet, and there's nothing wrong with that.

"parallel" self explanatory
my question is where to put the bridge to hav both batteries usable do i bridge the batteries together which i think would create a charging loop [charging battery 1 would then charge battery 2 until both full] then wen disconnected the phone would still show charging state
[i think] until battery 2 was depleted
i could b wrong now what bout the voltage comin from 2 batteries the battery outputs 3.7v give or tak now doubling that 7.4v should fry the voltage regulators if any present no?

That's not how it works. Batteries in parallel charge and discharge together. The voltage does not change. Batteries in series adds the voltages together. In parallel the voltage is the same but the current and capacity go up.
To the phone, batteries in parallel look like one battery. They do self-regulate/charge against each other, but the phone can't see that. For safety reasons, you need to make sure the voltage of the two batteries is similar, within about 0.1 volts, before connecting them. If you connected a fully charged battery to an empty one, the worst case, the full battery would dump power into the empty one trying to fill it to the same voltage. This would likely destroy the empty battery as it would not be able to handle a charge rate that high. It might also damage the full one, as cell phone batteries are not designed for high current discharge.
