Android OS battery drain - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know there are many threads about the same thing, but I guess every phone has a different issue.
My battery dies really fast. At the start when I had my note 3 (about a month ago) it lasted like 2 days and I had 6 hours of screen on time. Now that has been reduced to 2~3 hours and it will last barely 1 day. And the biggest problem is android OS.
For example. last night I charged it and unplugged it at 2:30 am. when I woke up at 8:45 am, my battery was at 80%. Now an hour later, without barely using it, it's down to 70%. I downloaded Gsam (that was advice other people got) and Gsam got me this:
so if anyone could help me out, that would be great.
oh and location services are turned off of course.

Nope, every phone have the same problem, the forced firmware/kernel/ROM aint working. It's that simple! All samsung hope for(After i did a Live chat) is that kitkat will fix it, as the guy i had a chat with had heard of the problem, many times.

Unfortunately every phone has a (very large) combination of different software and hardware
In your case there might be a lot of reasons, from a poor-quality microsd (if you have one) to problems with cellular signal or programs that are connected over internet.
I would suggest more research on where the precise wakelocks are, also maybe some overnight tests in airplane mode or similar stuff, maybe also without a microsd.
Just to clarify where I am - my N9005 with MJ7 with Wifi and data disabled (but cellphone enabled so I can get calls) and heavily "optimized/greenified" will only drop about 1% over 8 hours at night.

Well there kinda is, as he said to me, It's not like im not allowed to install new rom/kernel/root but it will void the warranty.... As he also said

Problem is, the phone does work from time to time, it just kinda gets into a loop in the kernel. When it is working, and I have everything running as I always have, it will drop about 0.2% and that is with syncs and everything and i can achieve this everyday, if im ready to go through the pain in the morning with restarting untill it goes into a stable run.... which sucks ass.
I have done 2 factory resets, second time i didnt do anything at all other than having calls and sms working. Still wakelock after 1/2 days, so it really is just the samsung/android mix of apps that works like ****.
In the end, it can work so they just need to fix it and there would be no reason at all to get a smartphone if you would feel fine with airplane mode etc. it has to work while it runs it's dayli things, not when its in airplane mode and cut off from the web!
This problem is pissing me off bigtime.

sorry for this bump.
but today I got my phone back from samsung. I sent them my phone two times because of this major issue. The first time they put in a new motherboard and a new camera. That didn't help at all, so the second time they just ran some tests and said my phone was functioning perfectly. They said it could be my charger or my battery, but I had my battery checked at my provider and they said the battery was as new. I still use the original charger of my note 3, but I tried to charge it with the S4 charger, but same problem. So it's not my charger, it's not my battery, it's not my motherboard, not my camera... It just HAS to be samsung's messed up firmware. The odd thing is that a relative of mine also has a note 3 and he has the same battery life as I had few months ago, while his phone is just as old as mine. And I haven't installed any apps, just system apps running and battery life gets drained by android system.
I really have no idea what to do, even Samsung won't help me anymore with their crap services -_-
I won't root it either, or else I won't have my guarantee anymore.
If anyone has got a fix for this yet, please tell me.
Right now I disabled many of the useless samsung apps and I got greenify installed. Neither one of this helps.

Do you have an Sview case?

KitKat from T-Mobile did the same to TWO new Note 3's, completly made the battery life go to hell. I'm on my third Note 3 with Jelly Bean and no issues. I'm skipping KitKat entirely

Mine is listed at 38% Android OS Kernel in GSAM, but I loose 1% every 10 hours in deep sleep.
I think the monitors are all malfunctioning, or more accurately, people are interpreting them wrong.
It just means out of EVERYTHING, 38% is used by Android. If you're not running anything else heavy, that's pretty obvious... Android is the bloody OS, of course it's going to be heavier than some pitiful little app you rarely use. Doesn't mean it eats 38% per minute...
Something else is eating your battery, it sounds to me like your phone isn't going into deep sleep. Android isn't doing that, Mediaserver probably is.
Drop a .nomedia file in every folder not containing music, videos or pictures, and scan the device and SD for 0kb files in Windows (Search for Size:Empty).
Also, turn off Sync, location services and any auto-setting.

Got my note 3 about 2 months ago. The 1st month it had great battery life but after the kitkat upgrade the drain got insane. I've tried factory reset, removing battery, did many full battery cycles and nothing helps.
I've called samsung and the person in the phone said it is probably a hardware issue or some app, but the hardware is fine and the após até the same I've always used, the drain is in the Os.
I am unrooted stock room and would prefer not to root or flash at least for now. I like the stock room aside from the battery problem.
Any help solving this would be welcome.

[How-To-Fix] Android OS Bug suddenly appeared

Hi,
See my solution in Post 10 of this Thread
there have ever since been people complaining about battery drain connected with the AndroidOS Bug.
I have never had these before but as of 3 days ago it appeared out of nowhere. (No new install, no new Rom or something else)
Now Android OS is up to 40% even with 4h of screen usage over a ±10h period with 3h CPU time
i have no clue where this comes from but a reboot did not help.
-Does someone know if a factory reset/wipe helps?
-Any clue on how to solve this?
-Why does it come out of nowhere?
PS:
rooted
Baseband KG6
Kernel CF-Root KG6
Build KG5
For some the bug is there from the beginning, others, like you and me, have it from nowhere! And I can bet the only thing you can do is - WAIT for it to disappear. More you think, more complicated it will get.
Regards.
I think the bug here is 'AndroidOS'.
Hehe jus' trollin'
Why don't you try a total wipe and see what happens...won't take long to do that.
---------- Post added at 05:57 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:55 PM ----------
Also which idiots are voting this down? How does that help anyone?
I`ll try a wipe/factory reset tomorrow and tell you about the results.
Thanks to Titanium Backup it won`t be such a pain...
BTW: if i restore all launcher and widget apps and data - will the widgets stay or will i get the "problem loading widget" signs all over?

Exactly same thing for me. It appeared circa 3days ago out of nowhere, never had it on any of my android handsets, didnt flash anything new, it just appeared. I have 24 percent of AOS now.
But for now I havent noticed any battery drain, its just there, sitting on top of the battery stats, but I dont see any noticeable battery drain.
Rom and kernel in my sig.
I don't know about the problem loading widget thing...I don't use them. Battery wasters IMHO..
I use to have this problem and tracked it down to the software update and hub process in running services. since I started ending them when I turn my phone on, The problem vanished.
I had this for the 1st two weeks owning my phone, I thought it was normal and the 10 hour standby battery life and heat problem would improve.
It turned out to be a couple of widgets, I deleted them and the problem dissapeared, now its standby of 1% per hour and a cool phone, Im a much happier chappy.
thanks for your feedback. before attempting a wipe/restore i tried :
-freezing apps (email, hubs, software update) with anttek (free)
-disabling fast dormacy (dial *#9900# for secret menu)
i hope this will bring down AndroidOS.
after reading xeq544 `s post i have to admit that batterylife isn`t that MUCH worse, just AndroidOS went up
I`ll keep you up to date with my results
Great success, friends!
i managed to get AndroidOS back down to 14% after a day (13h) of moderate use (WhatsApp, Facebook, GMail synch on + 2h10m Display) and ended up with ±45% left. Wifi was active+connected half the day, disabled the other half
AndroidOS´s CPU time is now ±40min instead of 3h
How-I-Did-It:
-Disable Fast-Dormacy (Dial *#9900# )
-Freeze list of Apps with AntTek/Titanium Backup Pro:
--E-Mail (i use G-Mail and Email keept running nevertheless)
--AP Mobile (which also uses data without beeing used-how can i open that App anyways?)
--GameHub
--MusicHub
--ReadersHub
--SamsungApps
--SocialHub
--Chat
--Software-Update (Odin FTW)
--Wi-Fi Sharing (noone knows what this app is good for but it eats battery)
-Reboot afterwards
i hope this helps some people here with their battery and makes you enjoy your Phone even more!

[Q] Google & Galaxy S4 battery drain

Hello all,
I am writing to try if someone could help me solve a problem that's turning out to be quite disturbing.
First of all, it's important to say that both me and my brother owned an iPhone 4 and we decided to sell it and buy an S4 instead. So, we bought 2 Galaxies S4 in the same day, from the same shop, and I'll make some comparisons in this thread.
In the first days I bought my phone, I had a problem with battery drain. When I checked the battery menu on the phone, I could see that "Google services" were the culprit of the disaster. This way, I got my brother's phone and set everything exactly like set on his phone. It didn't work.
After some research, I decided to uncheck a couple of things that were checked to Sync, such as "Contacts", "Application Data", "Person/People Details" (not sure how it is written in English version), "Google Pictures" and "Picasa Albums", and I kept Gmail and Calendar, cause I need them.
The problem disappeared. Google Services if not even in the list anymore, and when it shows up, its consumption is around 2, 3%. Just for information, in my brother's phone, everything about Sync is active.
I attached a picture where it is possible to see that Google Maps is doing the ridiculous role of sucking 20% of the battery, and it has actually often gone up to 25%. I had this issue a couple of days ago, but it went away with no explanation. At that time, my "Location history" was off.
On Tuesday, as decided to turn this "Location history" on again, because it is a good feature for me to have and, moreover, my brother has everything active and his Google Maps doesn't usually show up on top of the battery draining apps, and when it does, it is with 3-4%.
On Wednesday, the battery consumption was apparently normal, but from Thursday on, I have been seeing this tiny piece of disturbance at the top much more than the screen by the way!
The apps I have downloaded are:
[when I write YES, it means my brother also has this app; when I write NO, he doesn't have]
WhatsApp - YES
CNN - NO
Shazam - NO
PicsArt - YES
Cut the Rope - NO
Facebook - YES

Angry birds - NO

Can anyone help me finding what's going on? Just for info, sometimes the apps "Phone" and "Messages" are crazy next to 20% as well.
Thanks and, if you solve my problem, I will bless you so much that you may win the lottery.
unfortunately that battery screenshot isn't very helpful. It shows the battery usage percentage as a whole, so if all the apps are using a small amount of battery, they still have to add up to 100%, you can't really get an idea of how much CPU time they've used.
I recommend installing an app called BetterBatteryStats, it'll help you track down the culprit. post the BBS dump here if you want and I'll try and take a look.

Thanks in advance, actually!
I've found this thread over here:

And I've just done what the guy suggests (uninstalling the updates and reinstalling again), tomorrow I come with news!
Right now, the Google Maps app is not anymore in that ranking.
One thing I found helped was to turn off the "wifi when asleep" option which is somewhere in the advanced wifi settings.

People,
Just for info, I left my phone on the battery over night. It was a disaster.
My battery is 64% and I haven't used the phone.
But now, Google maps is not on the top anymore. Its position has been taken by Phone and Messages.
It's ridiculous, please see the attached files. What the heck is going on with this phone?
Desperate for help.
Thanks a lot!

I've just checked here and both I and my brother have this option enabled. My brother doesn't experience any battery drainage issues.
Processes using most battery are still Phone and Messages.
Does anyone know what I can try to solve this? Google Maps problem is apparently not the problem anymore.
yeah you have a wakelock issue - 36% deep sleep sucks.
These are your culprits:
Code:
RILJ (Telefone): 2 h 15 m 59 s (8159 s) Count:9196 24,2%
MMS Connectivity (com.android.mms.Mensagem): 1 h 33 m 59 s (5639 s) Count:118 16,7%
l2_hsic (): 1 h 29 m 27 s (5367 s) Cnt:(c/wc/ec)9504/1185/9503 15,9%
umts_ipc0 (): 1 h 17 m 24 s (4644 s) Cnt:(c/wc/ec)9230/658/9229 13,8%
radio-interface (): 1 h 16 m 55 s (4615 s) Cnt:(c/wc/ec)4598/214/0 13,7%
rpm_hsic (): 42 m 9 s (2529 s) Cnt:(c/wc/ec)9505/596/0 7,5%
all network/radio stuff. I assume you're both using the same mobile network?
i'm not sure what to suggest really. Maybe you'll have to take the phone back to where you bought it and ask them? probably the first step would be to install exactly the same apps that your brother has, also check the process section in BBS, it isn't dumped by default, but might be interesting.

Yes, we're both using the same network... and if you don't know what to suggest, I am starting to think I'm in a big trouble.
Both phones have been bought factory unlocked and at a shop totally independent from our carrier.
I attached to this post a screenshot of the battery section today, and a dumpfile of the processes.
I also noticed that my Message Center (in Messages Options) is different from his. I don't know if it should be or not.
I cannot seem to find any app of mine that could use "Phone" and "Messages" processes. Do you have a shot? It would be really awful to uninstall everything I have and then start installing again...
In a desperate try, I'll order a new microsim from my carrier, cause mine is about 7 years old. I don't know the impact of it, but I'll never get to know until I try it.
I can't even find information about this issue on Google, 'cause if I search for "phone app draining battery" it basically shows me everything related to general phone battery problems.
That's disturbing.
Thank you again!
Curious: every single time I turn on the phone, it says on the lock screen:
"It is impossible to send your message now. It will be sent when the service is available."
Are you sure you have closed the phone and messages by holding down the home button and swiping to close apps? I know it sounds basic but it's happened to me before, left messenger active and drained 36 percent on my galaxy tab 2 10.1 tablet! Which has a 7000mah battery. Just goes to show how much battery these apps can use if you dont close them. If you have then I don't know its very strange usually the android os is using the most on mkne closly followed by device idle if I leave mine on overnight

Hi guys.
Yes, I had closed the applications, deleted cache, tried everything I could.
I gave up and did a factory reset.
It's been something like 1 hour, and these processes are not top ranked anymore. On the other hand, Google Services is back, with 40%.
That's a shame... never had such problem with my old and gold iPhone.
If I only knew this...

That definitely seems like something to chase up - possibly an SMS is stuck in a sending loop or something.. (but as you've hard reset this is moot i suppose).

swiping the app away in the "alt+tab" screen won't do anymore than just pressing the back button to exit. If you exit the app by pressing the home button, the app will persist for a while, but android's memory allocation proceses will clean it up soon enough.

Thanks and, if you solve my problem, I will bless you so much that you may win the lottery.

Google Services went away now, but Google Maps is still the top app with 20%. I don't know if it's really wrong or it's just because I've just installed it and it's maybe trying to gather some initial information, and then it will disappear. What do you think?
If Google Maps keep being on top the whole day tomorrow, I am thinking of trying the same fix that worked for me the last time (uninstalling updates and then reinstalling them).
I didn't download BetterBatteryStats yesterday. I've just downloaded it, I'll keep it tracking tonight and post the dump here tomorrow, ok?

I can't see a point turning off Google Maps. First of all, I'd lose some features I find important and valuable in the phone.
Moreover, Google Maps is activated on my brother's phone and it's all right.
I think I need to focus on fixing it, but never turning off.
Thanks for the help, guys!
make sure your location services (latitude, google now) stuff is turned off, it'll drain like hell.
remember, just because maps is at the top of the list doesn't mean it's draining heaps, it might just mean it's the worst of a list of low drainers.

That doesn't close apps. That just removes them from the list of recently used apps that you get to from holding down the home button.
Nor are the apps on that list "open". It's just a list of recently used apps.
There are *some* apps that genuinely do remain open in the background and consume battery. Usually this means the app is misbehaving, but there are some apps that naturally consume a lot of battery in the background, such as Google Latitude, and some features of Google Now, if you have them set to keep track of your location.

Good morning!
Well, today Google Maps is still at the top, usage around 20%. But I can see drastic battery life improvement:
I fully charged my phone, removed the charger and went to bed. Woke up after ~ 7 hours and the battery was 93%. If it is not completely solved, I'm getting close to it. Do you think it's normal now or Google Maps is in fact still draining more battery than it should?
I'm attaching a new BBS dumpfile.
It would be nice if you could teach me a bit of how you read this log as well.
Friend, thanks a lot, really.
that seems pretty reasonable drain now, I'd say your problem is fixed.
how to read the BBS file. All of this info can be gleaned from the BBS app, you don't have to dump the file unless you want to share you stats with others.
Not all of the BBS dump is useful. here's the stuff i look for:
Since 8 h 52 m 55 s <- how long this BBS session has gone for.
Level lost [%]: Bat.: -9% (100% to 91%) [1,0%/h] <- 9% lost over the above time, which equates to 1%/hour. 1%/hour is a reasonable amount for idling, the best i have got it to is about 0.6%/hour, but this is with a rooted debloated ROM, and custom undervolted kernel
Deep Sleep (): 8 h 20 m 16 s (30016 s) Ratio: 93,9% <- 94% deep sleep. this means that for the BBS session (~9 hours in this case), 6% of the time the phone was awake due to some process (wakelock) bringing the phone out of deep sleep. You want as much deep sleep as possible - the phone is in a super low power state (having shut down various components to reduce battery usage) when in deep sleep. 94% deep sleep is excellent. If you look at your previous deep sleep, it was 36% - shocking
Awake (): 32 m 39 s (1959 s) Ratio: 6,1% <- as i mentioned above - 6% awake, or 32 minutes
Screen On (): 7 m 33 s (453 s) Ratio: 1,4% <- 7 minutes of the session time you had the screen on. if you subtract 7 minutes from the awake time (32 - 7 = 25mins), it'll give you the amount of awake time you have with the screen off. the phone MUST be awake when the screen is on - this is obvious. However, when the screen is off, you're aiming for the least amount of awake time (or another way of putting it - the most amount of deep sleep). for 25 mins of screen off time your phone was awake instead of in the deep sleep state. You'll never get it to 0, the phone has to wake up for various tasks. 25 mins of awake time over 9 hours is totally acceptable IMO. This stuff is just "proving" your deep sleep %. It's not really giving you any new info.
Wakelocks <- this section describes all the user level applications that are keeping your phone awake when it could be in deep sleep. In the BBS app, this section is called Partial Wakelocks. I would probably pay attention to entries that are 10% and higher. in your case your worst Partial Wakelock is:
NetworkLocationLocator (com.google.android.apps.maps.Mapas): 9 m 21 s (561 s) Count:114 1,8% <- so 1.8% (9 minutes). totally acceptable IMO. you'd probably have to uninstall Maps to remove this, i don't think there's any settings you can do to get it lower.
Kernel Wakelocks <- these describe kernel wakelocks - so system wakelocks. You will have much less ability to affect these without rooting the phone and hacking away at it. Your worst is:
PowerManagerService (): 12 m 1 s (721 s) Cntc/wc/ec)627/25/0 2,3% <- PowerManagerService is a grouping of all the Wakelocks - all the partial wakelocks in the above section form this single kernel wakelock. So you can mostly ignore this entry, because you'll be dealing with it in the above section.
The next 4 kernel wakelocks are to do with wifi and network, and are all tiny and insignificant (2% and less).

Battery Life Tips and Tricks Thread

I've noticed this phone has hit or miss battery life depending on what you have installed, greenified and frozen. I thought it would be a good idea to create a thread where everyone could share their battery life tips and tricks on this phone.
Below I posted what I have done to maximize battery life. I have not rooted my phone yet, so none of the below tips require root.
I disabled all bloatware apps that came with the phone. I did not disable any of the Asus applications.
I utilize the Asus autostart manger and denied auto start to all my applications except music applications, messenger applications, and google photo sync.
battery sucks. drain to much.
Just use until you have 5% free battery, this should make at least your day
With Android OS taking so much thanks to lollipop, there is not a lot to hope.
We wont see a good battery improvement until we get 5.1
Luckily, that is in the future for this device acc. to Asus.
Since the issue seems to primarily be Android os draining the battery I don't think most battery saving measures will make a difference. We will just have to wait for an update
When I was looking at the phone reviews people were claiming 8 hours screen on time, I can barely get 2 hours screen on time.
The problem I'm having is that the phone never goes to sleep and is constantly awake. Has anyone else seen this issue?

I'm on 2.18.40.12 (ZE551ML of course), I restored the phone from backup & restore in settings (It may take 30 minutes or more). Before restoring I had 45+% of Android OS during the night, now 20% more or less, but, as said, also in BBS I can see deepsleep in frequencies.
Someone posted on Zentalk to turn off remote lock and scan for security threats in google settings. Not sure if it helps or not.

Glad you solved, but don't know why, maybe they are working hard on the firmware and there are lot of changes that can cause problem, maybe we have to wipe after every update, Intel processor and Lollipop are so unstable right now!

Ok so this is my battery with a normal day of use... Tomorrow ill show the results with your sugestions. My normal days have gsm calls(normal phone calls) whasapp (chat) youtube, twich, game like plant vs zombies 2, look at gmail, surfing internet, taking pics like 25 today.
I notice that battery drains a lot more while photo app open.
I use doble sim as you can see
If you want to test app battery drain, try GSAM Battery Monitor, or for some extra functionality the Pro version. Also very useful to determine what is causing wakelocks when you run into them.

Everyone is always wondering about Android using the most battery. Without doing some in depth debugging and tracing I would guess Houdini falls under Android. Because the ZenFone 2 uses the Intel processor a binary conversion for ARM instructions takes place with Houdini. More than likely you have a lot of apps native for ARM.
Force closing asus support app and zenui services app from apps setting gives me good amount of battery boost. Apart I have also disabled google books, movies, plus etc. I don't know if its placebo effect but someone can try and confirm. These app tend to restart at times so if you feel the battery decreasing at high rates again, make sure you force close them again.
Roughly speaking, I tend to get 3-5 min per percentage of screen on time with this which totals to 5 to 6 hrs on SOT on continous usage. Without the apps being force closed, I barely get 2min/%. The usage scenarios are normal web browsing, chats etc. This is using mobile data. It gets even better with wifi.
Try and let me know if this helps.
Maybe I don't use my phone as much as other people. I posted this last night on another forum. My phone was unplugged at 07:00, It's now 21:00. I have 80% battery left and the battery monitor shows 3 days left
I have received email, 3 phone calls and text messages. I checked Twitter a couple of times with the browser. I have read Google News a couple of times and played GSN Casino for about 20 minutes.
In Auto Start Manager I turned off Docs, Sheets, Skype, Slides, Translate, Amazon Kindle, Data Transfer and Web Storage. Everything else is Allow, but I have no social networking applications installed.
Its looks like battery life is a right mixed bag. At the start of the week I was suffering wake lock issue, my phone wouldn't go into deep sleep and was constantly awake. I wiped and restored from backup which seams to fix the issue.
Got up this morning and it looks like the wake lock issue is back. I don't know what to do to fix it.
Feel like giving up on the phone and sending it back if I can

Android OS consuming huge amount of battery

hi guys first of all i apologize for this post not having detailed info such as ss from BBS,GSAM and WLD and will post them later !!
and as always i guess with most battery related problems it happened suddenly and i really mean suddenly the day before yesterday everything was perfectly fine and i didn't have that ridiculous battery drain !!
i woke up yesterday only to find out that Android OS is taking more than 50% of battery usage with a drain like 20% over night
restarted many times and by the end of the day i installed GSAM and WLD (wakelock detector)
froze most of apps including the ones i installed recently but i didn't install that battery hog apps (nothing unusual) and also they didn't appear in partial wakelocks section of BBS
btw i don't use any fake battery extender tools or memory boosters it's just Greenify
i observed that sometimes when i unlock my device (i use knock code btw if that matter!!) wifi gets disconnected and reconnect again (wifi icon disappear and re-appear again in 3 secs or so)
i'll upload ss in a couple of mins
thank you
Edit: SS Added
and notice how it drained 5% in just 40 mins (20 mins SOT) !!!

I had the same problem with battery drain(although not as severe) along with huge data consumption when using a significantly modified(i.e. heavy debloat and ota disabled) rooted stock rom. I tried a few customs roms and dorimanx kernel(not at the same time), and even though battery drain wasn't as bad, they were are waaaay to buggy to be used everyday(especially the dorimanx kernel, it's really bad).
Just last week I tot back to KK and ota updated to the latest LP rom(lost root unfortunately). Then I uninstalled/disabled every app I could/needed. Everything is very fast, smooth, and stable again. I now lose 1-2% every 8hrs in standby with syncing and wifi/data enabled, bluetooth and nfc disabled. I regularly get 5-6hrs sot over 48hrs with moderate use and brightness on auto.
I do have a new battery though - my old one( came with my "refurbished" phone from freedompop) gave me 2-3hrs of sot - but that was when I first got it and before I started modifying anything.

My G2 (vs980) has also been suffering from a sudden battery drain. Android OS and Android System seem to be the problem. They are now second and third on the list of battery usage, after the screen. Before now, they were never that high on the list. I noticed this last weekend, when I kdz to the latest update for the vs980, which is 3AA. After noticing this, I flashed the xceed kernel, then cloudy with dorimanx kernel, and the battery drain continued. I even kdz back to kitkat, still the same, then I flashed AICP 11, and still the same battery drain by Android OS and system. Finally, I restored a backup of stock lollipop 39A but, the issue continued so I turned on airplane mode and it seems to help a bit. I still notice battery life isn't the same as before. The os and system still drain more than usual even on airplane mode.
Kind of glad to hear I'm not the only one with this issue. I don't think I need a new battery, since I bought the phone new in April 2015 from Bestbuy.
Also Gsam, shows the temperature of phone between 80°-90°F, where before it would be in the low to mid 70s. One time, it even got up to 104°F, funny thing is, it doesn't even feel that hot in my hand.
Hopefully, we can find out what's causing this because I really liked the battery life on this phone. Even when people complained about the battery life being worse on 5.0.2, I was pretty happy with it. All my previous phones can't compare to the g2. Now I feel like upgrading though lol.

When I tried the version that was out a month or two ago it wasn't nearly as smooth as stock, even after conservatively messing with the kernel app settings. The worst was that it also cut out tethering and my flashlight when the screen shut off. Maybe the recent updates have fixed some of the issues, but I doubt it. Could be that he doesn't have access to the sprint variant which I have...
Either way, just because 'thousands' of people use it doesn't necessarily mean that it's good - 99.9% of those users have no idea how to code or how a kernel is written. Their knowledge goes as far as following picture guides online - which a 5 years old could do. Just look at the most recent change log - those 'fixes' were to glaringly huge problems that shouldn't have been made in the first place and people were blissfully using it the whole time. Think about how many thousands of other bugs their must be. Not to mention hacking up code made by professionals at huge companies could lead to many other problems. Obliviously the stock kernel has bugs as well, but it works and is fast and stable so I see no need for using a hacked together kernel made by one amateur that doesn't even have my version of the phone to test it on. I wanted it to be good - which Is why I went to the trouble of installing it, but it's definitely NOT.

I uninstalled ALL of the stock apps that can be uninstalled. The ones I disabled are aosp keyboard, app updates, browser, calendar, cloud print, favorite contact widget, google play books, games, movies & tv, newstand, google+, lg voice command speech pack, music, music(the widget - it always runs in the background even without being on the homescreen), notebook, polaris viewer, quicktranslator, swype, talkback, voice command. I would have liked to disable a few more but I'm not rooted so I couldn't.
I use nearly all of the google products like chrome, gmail, calendar, docs, keep, music, photos, news and weather,translate,etc...so having the stock lg ones enabled was redundant. I also only have the bare minimum of installed apps that I need. Nearly all of them are made my major corporations i.e Chase, BofA, ebay, paypal, freedompop, microsoft, swiftkey etc. I have NO games or any small apps that need a ton of permissions. The only small apps are feedly, print hammermill, privacy flashlight(240kb, no ads, no permissions) and bubble level(180kb, no ads, no permissions).
I also go through every settings in every app to make sure it's what I want. And I restart my phone every time I take it off the charger. IMO having a clean and no frills system that is set correctly is the key to performance and battery life.
I just want want to clarify that I average 4-5hrs per 1% in standby since it doesn't seem to hold as well as it gets closer to 0%.
theres this app that have lots of info on battery..
thx guys for adding your experience
i hoped moded kernels would've reduced that amount as they should have necessary drivers for wifi which was somehow got messed up but from your reply i guess i've to look somewhere else
idk how to put this, well this isn't a solution at all i actually didn't start working on it yet just thought to share what i found so far !!
so it's just a reference for any one whose luck was bad enough to have a wakelock like that !
1st of all in most cases neither the device nor it's battery are at fault *you need to understand that*
faulty battery doesn't show up kernel related wakelocks instead they drain without a reason so i hope ppl stop accusing battery in every battery drain thread!
2nd after understanding that you'll have to deal with the environment your phone is used in
to put it simple it's your router and all devices in your current network !! (idk though why not all devices get affected by that or why it just started now, tough luck yea)
those threads may help

http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/help/getting-rid-wlanrxwake-wakelocks-t2519294
what i'll try to do is add an old access point to my router and connect my phone to it as i don't have a replacement router right now!!
i'll let you know if things were improved !
hey guys
i thought to share what i did so far and before i go on there is a bad news and a good news !!
i would start with the bad news first !
-no rom could solve this issue so you don't really need to format everything and start from scratch especially if you didn't mess around too much and you found it started suddenly like here, i've tried couple of roms including latest CM13 build it wasn't that bad but it didn't solve the drain that much either !!
-now some ppl may see this bad and some may don't care (which means good!!) google services are the ones responsible for this drain
well man you didn't come up with anything new and i see you've got a problem getting straight to the point besides you talk too much
i'm sorry
now you have to sacrifice your google services background sync including "GCM" if you are using any services similar to pushbullet or notification mirroring you'd understand why it's important
anyway if you are good with that you may install and yea it works with latest google play services
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.playfulgeeks.gservicefix
and do as instructions (and believe it'll work if you did steps right)
if you prefer manual way then you'll need "app ops xposed module" and deactivate every "wake up" permission from google services
this guide may help but remember we don't have tools natively in our roms so don't bother downloading "shortcut maker" and go through your settings app to find "privacy guard" or "app ops" we don't have those natively like them
http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-one/general/guide-google-play-services-battery-t2832525
i'll share some ss from stock battery stats
i'm sorry for my long post and i hope it'll help someone with same issue
idk if it solved issue completely but things are stabilized a lot now and i just lost 1% over night not 20% or 30% like before !!
and i'm using lollipop now so i guess it's not that bad for what i heard about bad lollipop battery since it's my first time trying it !!
and btw real SOT should be +40 mins so the real SOT is 2H-47M cuz i restarted my phone to apply that fix and for some reason battery stats doesn't stick between reboots !!
if anyone interested in trying that rom it's for D800 only btw and thx to @Swetnes for his work rom feels pretty stable and solid :good:

BUGS & BATTERY USAGE on JULY official rom

hi MI A1 owners.
for those brave enough to use the latest vanilla, official OTA rom, what change did you notice?
does the battery still suffer huge drain that appeared in 2018 roms?
it's a big "NOPE" for me to update, i'm still on official DEC rom because of this drain issue.
Battery life is good on 8.1 no issue for me getting 5-6 hours SOT on gaming.
Never had battery drain problems. Only "issue" is notification led not blinking.
Just noticed that led light is no longer blinking when notifications arrive. Light stays on only when screen is off. Also Bluetooth is constantly disconnecting.
Ambient display isn't working for me.
Led notifier is also not blinking anymore!
Led not blinking, proximity sensor doesn't work properly all the time, some scrolling lag. That's what I've got so far
dudes thanks for your answers.
i'm just more convinced to not doing the update.
maybe the drain i had was magisk-related. (?)
Nothing for me, even got ten hours of screen after some cycles. Led doesn't bother me and it's the only thing i noticed.
Yes, the LED is always on, which is annoying, but the bigger issue is there is no change in the battery drain. I charged to 100%, set the phone down and did not move it or use it overnight. 8 hours later almost 14% of battery was drained. I have tried everything I can think of to try, including turning off high accuracy location, not allowing any location things like safe area, etc. and still I get this drain even when the phone is not in use. Android kernel and system consumed 85% of that usage, and System UI, Play Store and Phone Services accounted for 7%! SO basically, basic Android paired with the A1 hardware seems to be the issue and I don't know that there is any fix for that.
At one point, I thought an upgrade to the A2 was going to be a no brainer, but with the issues with updates being broken and this battery drain issue that nobody seems to be able to pinpoint and resolve, I am thinking I may not buy ANY other Xiaomi. It may be time to try something else because the only way I can get two days of battery is to turn on airplane mode when the phone is not in use!

Dunno what to say man. Mine is below.
2-3% at most over night.
And now it would appear that there is an issue with airplane mode.
I put the phone into Airplane mode at 2300 last night with 90% battery and did not pay attention to it. This morning I turned to phone on to find there was only 69% battery left, and WiFi was working. (see screen shot) WTF???? I have started using airplane mode to keep the battery drain to a minimum when the phone is not in use, and now it would appear that this doesn't work either.
I am REALLY getting frustrated with Android and Xiaomi as it seems that every time they do an update, something else goes bump! I have gone from totally happy with the AI when I first got it to being ready to write off Xiaomi as a company I would consider for purchase.

Play services also cause these type of sudden battery losses.
Try downloading latest play services apk from apkmirror . Latest one is
"com.google.android.gms_12.8.74_(090408-204998136)-12874034_minAPI26(arm64-v8a,armeabi-v7a)(480dpi)_apkmirror.com.apk"
Uninstall your current one. Install this .
Power off your phone for a few seconds and reboot.

Thanks for the thoughts, but unless I totally misunderstand what airplane mode is, WiFi should not be active when airplane mode is invoked. You can see by the screen cap that airplane mode is on AND WiFi is active. This seems to be a one off as it has not happened again for the last two days. I turn airplane mode on to stop the overnight battery drain while the phone is doing nothing. I have location set to GPS Only. IIRC play services was just updated 3 days or so ago, so it should have the latest version. I will check it and see though. Again, thanks for the thoughts.

I can't logically understand why you would think it is the hardware causing the issue. If it was hardware, what you are seeing would be happening to every owner of the phone and clearly that is not happening. By saying it is the hardware when you have other software loaded is akin to saying your car's air conditioning doesn't work properly when you have all the windows wound down.
There is something loaded on your phone that is causing the systemUI to be working when you think nothing should be happening. The first thing I see on the screenshot on your phone is that in the top left of the screen you have two non standard icons. That tells me that you have a skin or non standard software constantly running.
The way to solve any issue like this is to go back to basics. I would get the fresh rom and do a Miflash whilst keeping your data. Make sure you do a backup first.
If that does not work, back up your data and do a clean install and check the phone's battery life. Do not load any non google software / app at this stage.
Then each day add one app and test for 24 hours. You will find this issue and the offending app or apps and I would be willing to bet you a few Singhas it will be an app you downloaded not the hardware causing this.

Actually, I think it is a combination of hardware/software, but that is just a WAG. Others have noted the exact same issue without running the same software. My bet would be on the RCS services stuff.

Those icons are my Email client and GSAM Battery Monitor (presently 0.1% and 0.8%) and are the only two constantly running programs other than the stock apps and Sophos (0.3%). Neither use much battery compared to the Android stuff. Presently Kernel is 41.6%, RCS/Phone is 30.3%. SystemUI is 3.3%, Play Services is 2.0% and Phone Services is 1.8%

Good advice. I will do this when I have a few days to play with it. In the interim, it's airplane mode every night. Thanks for the reply. If it turns out to be one of these apps, let me know where to send the Singhas.
Good luck with it. I hope you find the solution. It can be frustrating, but getting to the bottom of it will be worthwhile. I haven't used Sophos for a long time and even then it was for PC. I am not up with how Sophos AV is integrating into Android but that would be my first guess.
I have only had one issue with this phone after updating and it was that the OS was constantly asking for a password on unlock after using fingerprint not just on startup. A clean install solved it and I have been trouble free since with every update. With over 50 PCs in my office, I could only wish that I had so few issues with Windows updates as I do with Android.
For me, night light auto schedule not working properly.
I can't tether via wifi/bluetoth/usb
Made another post with the problem.

Just for grins and giggles, I uninstalled my email client, GSAM, and Sophos, the only programs that run constantly other than system and Line. I then turned my phone off and back on, forced stopped Line, charged it to 100% and set it down with the screen off. It did not move of get used for 8 hours, yet it still used 12% of the battery. (see screenshots) This is better than the 20% with those apps installed, but still not close to what I would consider normal. When I first got the phone, it easily lasted 2-3 days between charges, with 6-7 hours SoT. Overnight would use MAYBE 2% of the battery. Now if I want it to last 2 days I need to turn on airplane mode overnight and then I can make it through a day.
So I guess the next step is to do as you recommended and load up the fresh rom when I have time to mess with it. At least I am now pretty sure that those apps aren't the culprits causing the biggest part of the battery drain. I hate to do it, but I am seriously thinking of a factory reset and seeing if that clears the issue. Would that put me back to Nougat?

How do you disable this apk? I seriously think this is the major culprit in the battery drain.

So those apps were causing 40% of of the 20% of the battery drain. That is a good start. I am confident there are software issues with your phone. I see you have some GPS app on your home screen, if that was running askew, it might be constantly pinging. That is just a guess.
In things like this, work methodically through it. But of cause a hard reset would be the best way to go. I see no reason why you wouldn't stay on your current version after a hard reset.
If you want to go make to version 7 you would need to use the MiFlash program and a downloaded standard fastboot rom. You may need to do something else to the phone to go back to 7, but I would not think so.
