[Q] Google & Galaxy S4 battery drain - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
I am writing to try if someone could help me solve a problem that's turning out to be quite disturbing.
First of all, it's important to say that both me and my brother owned an iPhone 4 and we decided to sell it and buy an S4 instead. So, we bought 2 Galaxies S4 in the same day, from the same shop, and I'll make some comparisons in this thread.
In the first days I bought my phone, I had a problem with battery drain. When I checked the battery menu on the phone, I could see that "Google services" were the culprit of the disaster. This way, I got my brother's phone and set everything exactly like set on his phone. It didn't work.
After some research, I decided to uncheck a couple of things that were checked to Sync, such as "Contacts", "Application Data", "Person/People Details" (not sure how it is written in English version), "Google Pictures" and "Picasa Albums", and I kept Gmail and Calendar, cause I need them.
The problem disappeared. Google Services if not even in the list anymore, and when it shows up, its consumption is around 2, 3%. Just for information, in my brother's phone, everything about Sync is active.
I attached a picture where it is possible to see that Google Maps is doing the ridiculous role of sucking 20% of the battery, and it has actually often gone up to 25%. I had this issue a couple of days ago, but it went away with no explanation. At that time, my "Location history" was off.
On Tuesday, as decided to turn this "Location history" on again, because it is a good feature for me to have and, moreover, my brother has everything active and his Google Maps doesn't usually show up on top of the battery draining apps, and when it does, it is with 3-4%.
On Wednesday, the battery consumption was apparently normal, but from Thursday on, I have been seeing this tiny piece of disturbance at the top much more than the screen by the way!
The apps I have downloaded are:
[when I write YES, it means my brother also has this app; when I write NO, he doesn't have]
WhatsApp - YES
CNN - NO
Shazam - NO
PicsArt - YES
Cut the Rope - NO
Facebook - YES
Viber - NO
9gag - NO
Messenger (facebook) - NO, but mine is not logged in
Skype - NO
Twitter - NO
Google Earth - NO
Google Translate - NO
Battery Doctor - NO
Flashlight - YES
Adobe Reader - NO
Doodle Jump - NO
Angry birds - NO
TED videos - NO
Flow Free - YES
Wordweb dictionary - NO
Swiftkey - NO
Can anyone help me finding what's going on? Just for info, sometimes the apps "Phone" and "Messages" are crazy next to 20% as well.
Thanks and, if you solve my problem, I will bless you so much that you may win the lottery.

unfortunately that battery screenshot isn't very helpful. It shows the battery usage percentage as a whole, so if all the apps are using a small amount of battery, they still have to add up to 100%, you can't really get an idea of how much CPU time they've used.
I recommend installing an app called BetterBatteryStats, it'll help you track down the culprit. post the BBS dump here if you want and I'll try and take a look.

I attached the dump, if you could help me, I'd be very thankful.
Thanks in advance, actually!

I've found this thread over here:
forums . androidcentral . com/samsung-galaxy-s3/287155-google-maps-battery-drain-issue-solved.html
[spaces added]
And I've just done what the guy suggests (uninstalling the updates and reinstalling again), tomorrow I come with news!
Right now, the Google Maps app is not anymore in that ranking.

One thing I found helped was to turn off the "wifi when asleep" option which is somewhere in the advanced wifi settings.

People,
Just for info, I left my phone on the battery over night. It was a disaster.
My battery is 64% and I haven't used the phone.
But now, Google maps is not on the top anymore. Its position has been taken by Phone and Messages.
It's ridiculous, please see the attached files. What the heck is going on with this phone?
Desperate for help.
Thanks a lot!

I've just checked here and both I and my brother have this option enabled. My brother doesn't experience any battery drainage issues.
Processes using most battery are still Phone and Messages.
Does anyone know what I can try to solve this? Google Maps problem is apparently not the problem anymore.

yeah you have a wakelock issue - 36% deep sleep sucks.
These are your culprits:
Code:
RILJ (Telefone): 2 h 15 m 59 s (8159 s) Count:9196 24,2%
MMS Connectivity (com.android.mms.Mensagem): 1 h 33 m 59 s (5639 s) Count:118 16,7%
l2_hsic (): 1 h 29 m 27 s (5367 s) Cnt:(c/wc/ec)9504/1185/9503 15,9%
umts_ipc0 (): 1 h 17 m 24 s (4644 s) Cnt:(c/wc/ec)9230/658/9229 13,8%
radio-interface (): 1 h 16 m 55 s (4615 s) Cnt:(c/wc/ec)4598/214/0 13,7%
rpm_hsic (): 42 m 9 s (2529 s) Cnt:(c/wc/ec)9505/596/0 7,5%
all network/radio stuff. I assume you're both using the same mobile network?
i'm not sure what to suggest really. Maybe you'll have to take the phone back to where you bought it and ask them? probably the first step would be to install exactly the same apps that your brother has, also check the process section in BBS, it isn't dumped by default, but might be interesting.

Yes, we're both using the same network... and if you don't know what to suggest, I am starting to think I'm in a big trouble.
Both phones have been bought factory unlocked and at a shop totally independent from our carrier.
I attached to this post a screenshot of the battery section today, and a dumpfile of the processes.
I also noticed that my Message Center (in Messages Options) is different from his. I don't know if it should be or not.
I cannot seem to find any app of mine that could use "Phone" and "Messages" processes. Do you have a shot? It would be really awful to uninstall everything I have and then start installing again...
In a desperate try, I'll order a new microsim from my carrier, cause mine is about 7 years old. I don't know the impact of it, but I'll never get to know until I try it.
I can't even find information about this issue on Google, 'cause if I search for "phone app draining battery" it basically shows me everything related to general phone battery problems.
That's disturbing.
Thank you again!

Curious: every single time I turn on the phone, it says on the lock screen:
"It is impossible to send your message now. It will be sent when the service is available."

Are you sure you have closed the phone and messages by holding down the home button and swiping to close apps? I know it sounds basic but it's happened to me before, left messenger active and drained 36 percent on my galaxy tab 2 10.1 tablet! Which has a 7000mah battery. Just goes to show how much battery these apps can use if you dont close them. If you have then I don't know its very strange usually the android os is using the most on mkne closly followed by device idle if I leave mine on overnight

Do you have bad signal? That can drain the battery

Hi guys.
Yes, I had closed the applications, deleted cache, tried everything I could.
I gave up and did a factory reset.
It's been something like 1 hour, and these processes are not top ranked anymore. On the other hand, Google Services is back, with 40%.
That's a shame... never had such problem with my old and gold iPhone.
If I only knew this...

That definitely seems like something to chase up - possibly an SMS is stuck in a sending loop or something.. (but as you've hard reset this is moot i suppose).

swiping the app away in the "alt+tab" screen won't do anymore than just pressing the back button to exit. If you exit the app by pressing the home button, the app will persist for a while, but android's memory allocation proceses will clean it up soon enough.

Google Services went away now, but Google Maps is still the top app with 20%. I don't know if it's really wrong or it's just because I've just installed it and it's maybe trying to gather some initial information, and then it will disappear. What do you think?
If Google Maps keep being on top the whole day tomorrow, I am thinking of trying the same fix that worked for me the last time (uninstalling updates and then reinstalling them).
I didn't download BetterBatteryStats yesterday. I've just downloaded it, I'll keep it tracking tonight and post the dump here tomorrow, ok?

I can't see a point turning off Google Maps. First of all, I'd lose some features I find important and valuable in the phone.
Moreover, Google Maps is activated on my brother's phone and it's all right.
I think I need to focus on fixing it, but never turning off.
Thanks for the help, guys!

make sure your location services (latitude, google now) stuff is turned off, it'll drain like hell.
remember, just because maps is at the top of the list doesn't mean it's draining heaps, it might just mean it's the worst of a list of low drainers.

That doesn't close apps. That just removes them from the list of recently used apps that you get to from holding down the home button.
Nor are the apps on that list "open". It's just a list of recently used apps.
There are *some* apps that genuinely do remain open in the background and consume battery. Usually this means the app is misbehaving, but there are some apps that naturally consume a lot of battery in the background, such as Google Latitude, and some features of Google Now, if you have them set to keep track of your location.

Good morning!
Well, today Google Maps is still at the top, usage around 20%. But I can see drastic battery life improvement:
I fully charged my phone, removed the charger and went to bed. Woke up after ~ 7 hours and the battery was 93%. If it is not completely solved, I'm getting close to it. Do you think it's normal now or Google Maps is in fact still draining more battery than it should?
I'm attaching a new BBS dumpfile.
It would be nice if you could teach me a bit of how you read this log as well.
Friend, thanks a lot, really.

that seems pretty reasonable drain now, I'd say your problem is fixed.
how to read the BBS file. All of this info can be gleaned from the BBS app, you don't have to dump the file unless you want to share you stats with others.
Not all of the BBS dump is useful. here's the stuff i look for:
Since 8 h 52 m 55 s <- how long this BBS session has gone for.
Level lost [%]: Bat.: -9% (100% to 91%) [1,0%/h] <- 9% lost over the above time, which equates to 1%/hour. 1%/hour is a reasonable amount for idling, the best i have got it to is about 0.6%/hour, but this is with a rooted debloated ROM, and custom undervolted kernel
Deep Sleep (): 8 h 20 m 16 s (30016 s) Ratio: 93,9% <- 94% deep sleep. this means that for the BBS session (~9 hours in this case), 6% of the time the phone was awake due to some process (wakelock) bringing the phone out of deep sleep. You want as much deep sleep as possible - the phone is in a super low power state (having shut down various components to reduce battery usage) when in deep sleep. 94% deep sleep is excellent. If you look at your previous deep sleep, it was 36% - shocking
Awake (): 32 m 39 s (1959 s) Ratio: 6,1% <- as i mentioned above - 6% awake, or 32 minutes
Screen On (): 7 m 33 s (453 s) Ratio: 1,4% <- 7 minutes of the session time you had the screen on. if you subtract 7 minutes from the awake time (32 - 7 = 25mins), it'll give you the amount of awake time you have with the screen off. the phone MUST be awake when the screen is on - this is obvious. However, when the screen is off, you're aiming for the least amount of awake time (or another way of putting it - the most amount of deep sleep). for 25 mins of screen off time your phone was awake instead of in the deep sleep state. You'll never get it to 0, the phone has to wake up for various tasks. 25 mins of awake time over 9 hours is totally acceptable IMO. This stuff is just "proving" your deep sleep %. It's not really giving you any new info.
Wakelocks <- this section describes all the user level applications that are keeping your phone awake when it could be in deep sleep. In the BBS app, this section is called Partial Wakelocks. I would probably pay attention to entries that are 10% and higher. in your case your worst Partial Wakelock is:
NetworkLocationLocator (com.google.android.apps.maps.Mapas): 9 m 21 s (561 s) Count:114 1,8% <- so 1.8% (9 minutes). totally acceptable IMO. you'd probably have to uninstall Maps to remove this, i don't think there's any settings you can do to get it lower.
Kernel Wakelocks <- these describe kernel wakelocks - so system wakelocks. You will have much less ability to affect these without rooting the phone and hacking away at it. Your worst is:
PowerManagerService (): 12 m 1 s (721 s) Cntc/wc/ec)627/25/0 2,3% <- PowerManagerService is a grouping of all the Wakelocks - all the partial wakelocks in the above section form this single kernel wakelock. So you can mostly ignore this entry, because you'll be dealing with it in the above section.
The next 4 kernel wakelocks are to do with wifi and network, and are all tiny and insignificant (2% and less).
If you'd like to thank me, feel free to click the Thanks button on my posts

ATTENTION! Xperia X10 battery problem SOLVED once and for all! Not kidding

Hi fellow Xperia X10 owners!
Ive got my device now for 4 weeks and in the beginning my battery only lasted for like ... 5-6 hours max ? I got so annoyed i did some research on how to solve it, and to be honest.. ive seen MANY post and MANY solutions but none of them really worked or they were not explained detailed enough to make any sense .. after many useless tweaks i got my battery to last like 12 hours, and that is by just making like 1-2 phone calls and some messages, nothing more, left aside when i made photo's or used the web... so my device was still useless.
Then i started using "advanced task killer" and the auto-kill feature, but that didnt realy solved much so i installed "task cleaner" but that didnt do much either.
Now after 3 days trying to find out what the problem is, i finally came to the solution !!!
Many post suggest using "advanced task killer" but none of them really gave the perfect settings for it, well i finally found them out myself
The settings i use : Auto Kill Level ==> Aggressive
Auto kill Frequency => When screen off
Security Level ==> Low
And now for the first time EVER! my phone can last like 3-5 days without recharging!
Additional tweaks are: 2G only
disabling WIFI and Bluethooth
disable GPS and positioning
Disabling these 3 doesnt realy make any problems since you can access them quickly by using the "networking widget" so i dont care
also put screen brightness to auto adjust and all these other minor things you hear in all the other posts, i am not going to list them once more.
Ive made some photo's for you to see for yourself
I'm a new user so i cant post links yet.. so you will have to copy it
w w w.photoshack. com /index.php?cat=26302 (kill the spaces)
I'm not trying to fool you or anything, i'm honest
(its in Dutch btw)
Time since last Charge says : 4Hr 14min 11sec
And my battery level indicates 100%
At this moment it says 5hr 9min 10 sec and i just entered the 99% zone
i didnt really made any calls or anything, i just checked once in a while how my battery was doing so it was basically running idle but i am still Very impressed!
I'il let you know how it turns out tomorrow etc, after ive made some calls and stuff
Good luck to all of you and i hope your search to happiness is finally complete!
And yes i'm dutch so dont blame my spelling ^^
Regards, clintax
thx for your info, i'll try your setting now
interesting idea, but I think we need to go through the list of what it is closing down in case you want to keep anything running. I Will test your settings and see how it does.
I was just using Kill level - aggressive with security level - medium and it was doing ok. Nothing spectacular but at least I could go all day without needing a charge or battery swap.
i was wondering. What exactly did you auto kill on advanced task manager?
I keep looking and looking there is nothing particular i want to kill.
I'll try this out and see how it goes by tomorrow. And by the way are you using helix launcher, gde or anything? Or is this the only thing you're doing?
I set the level to medium instead of low, we'll see how it goes.
I've followed all of your guidelines, but when I set ATK Auto Kill Frequency to "Screen Off", it immediately turns the screen back on after turning it off. After letting it sit and naturally time out screen off, it immediately turns the screen back on... Vicious power-draining cycle.
Is there some other tweak that I'm missing in your post?
@clintax, I'm pretty sure that the real reason that you see this improvement is because you have basically disabled all your networking facilities.
I have wifi turned on (never turn off when plugged in), GPS is turned on (which is the best because it doesnt consume any power unless some app uses it), bluetooth is off (but can turn on on request via settings widget).
My phone lasts me over 12 hours, which is sufficient to cover a normal work day, I use it in the metro to read books, I check news and feeds occasionally. I use push email so that I get instant notifications.
Personally, I dont think using task killer applications to kill apps is the only factor in the improvements you report. Usually, whenever I check my battery usage, applications+android system are usually under 5% in total.
I'm pretty sure my battery will last longer if I follow your example, but my phone wouldnt be half as useful as it is now. I really dont mind charging it overnight.
Cheers!
j4mm3r
followed your instructions but didnt get help. actually, my major battery drains on radio and standby. the 2 items always takes more than 50% of the total drainage.
look forward to the comments from all of you.
Didn't see any improvements either. I usually get 25h+ without running any task killers or start auditors, with 3g always on and medium to hard usage of the phone, which I'm pretty happy with. So I think its the settings of the data and radio that drain the battery, not the applications.
As a fellow Dutchman I'll share my part
Well I've tried most stuff already on my X10 and the only stuff I can really find that drains my battery are faulty apps (or at least in combination with the X10), GPS and searching for network when I'm out of reach (which is seldom).
I've currently disabled Beautiful Widget using the Startup Auditor, because at some point it starts killing my phone by running 100% and not letting my phone go to sleep. And this is what I meant by faulty apps (or in conjunction with the phone/OS).
3G is always enabled (what would be the use of this phone if you would disable all features which makes a smartphone useful).
Network based location enabled (now using it for the Weather & Toggle app).
No taskkillers running whatsoever.
Running Helix Launcher2 as home with seven screens.
Sending 20 to 30 textmessages, browsing the internet for 30 minutes (half with wifi/ half without), some calls about 30 minutes, toying a lot on the phone two hours plus, some Google Maps navigation 15 minutes with GPS enabled.
This will get me two days of usage easily.
Oh and running R1FB001 at the moment but had these results already with the R1EA016.
.
well yea, i installed helix launcher yesterday but i uninstalled it right away because i didnt like it so much.
Well to be honest, before i used the agressive settings etc on ATK, i used the same settings on the rest of my device
Wich are
-Only 2G
-No WIFI or bluethooth on
-Gps off
-autosync off
-dissabled auto-update, and put it on manual
-deleted the cash of moxier, timescape, mediascape in settings->my applications, and removed there icons from the homescreen
-screen brightness on auto
I suggest you take a look at this video from sony, wich explains it more detailed
(cant post links yet)
w w w .youtube. com/watch?v=P3H--BLPQnI (kill spaces)
and my battery still drained atleast 3-4% hr if not more, it is only from WHEN i started using these settings in ATK that my battery life improved like 500%!
BTW as for what features it kills by doing so i dont know yet, but at this moment everything still works perfectly
At this moment i have 14hr 23min 31 sec and 96% battery left, i'il post another pic for you guys.
Here are the new Pics: w w w.photoshack. com/thumbnails.php?album=10356 (kill spaces)
Cheerz
Well the important part off all this was Security Level ==> Low
it shows you like 3x more things running on you phone then normal, and i just killed them all except: Ignore list= ATK, Xperia Flashlight, Alarm, VizBattery, Handcent Sms and taskpanel, but i dont realy use taskpanel anymore
I am still trying to find out what it actually kills in particular but i heavent found any problems yet

I had two "battery cycles" where the battery lasted 48 hours with my normal usage (Moxier+Gmail in push, 3G data, no WiFi, some Bluetooth while driving the car, no GPS). I noticed that because I usually have a 24 hour duration, and at the end of the day, when I put the phone charging while I sleep, I still had more that 60% of the battery instead of the usual 15%! So I decided to not recharge overnight and so I get about 48 hours both times.
The third cycle lasted even more, about 60 hours!!!
However, starting from the fourth cycle... back to 20 hours, or even less... I have not changed anything, I'm not even using task killers... I really don't know what is wrong with this phone (the problem is not the battery itself, I tried with 2 original SE battery + the mugen).

well yea, i installed helix launcher yesterday but i uninstalled it right away because i didnt like it so much.
Well to be honest, before i used the agressive settings etc on ATK, i used the same settings on the rest of my device
Wich are
-Only 2G
-No WIFI or bluethooth on
-Gps off
-autosync off
-dissabled auto-update, and put it on manual
-deleted the cash of moxier, timescape, mediascape in settings->my applications, and removed there icons from the homescreen
-screen brightness on auto
I suggest you take a look at this video from sony, wich explains it more detailed
(cant post links yet)

and my battery still drained atleast 3-4% hr if not more, it is only from WHEN i started using these settings in ATK that my battery life improved like 500%!
BTW as for what features it kills by doing so i dont know yet, but at this moment everything still works perfectly
At this moment i have 14hr 23min 31 sec and 96% battery left, i'il post another pic for you guys.

Which version of Advanced Task Killer are you using? as i have just checked mine and do not have the option to kill when screen is off
I have version 1.7.4 build46

Advanced task killer v1.7.9 build 57 (directly from market)
Ok, so with the settings I used over night, I had a 5% drop over a period of 7 hours sitting idle.
Auto Kill level - Safe
Kill Freq - When Screen Off
Security level - Medium
BT, WIFI and APN - disabled.
I had a 1% drop in like 6/7hrs.. fell asleep whilst using xda, 3g was still running an all..
I just use taskpanel
Wifi, gps, bluetooth & auto sync off
also Adw launcher
Edit.. Firmware 016 (only cause I can't remember the rest lolz)

"sns_periodic_wakelock" killing battery

Hey,
I'm running stock nexus 4. I have been having terrible 8 hour battery life with "Android OS" taking up all the battery in battery status. BetterBatteryStats tells me that "sns_perioidic_wakelock" and "sns_async_ev_wakelock" is using up most of the battery. See attached. Any idea what apps are causing this?

I'm pretty sure I've seen those wakelocks when making a lot of phone calls. Seems likely related to cell radio use some how, but that's just a guess.

Actually the crazy thing is that i have airplane mode with wifi on most of the day cause I have really bad service. And I only have 100 minutes of talk, so I never talk on the phone.

Just checked mine and those wakelocks are really low today despite several phone calls, I've been on wifi all day though. The right way to figure those wakelocks out is to download the kernel source from one of the devs github and do some searches through the source to see where those wakelocks are logged. You might also search the battery impression thread in general, some smart folks have dissected many kernel wakelocks in there. Seems weird that you would have them in airplane mode.

I have the exact same issue. Wakelocks/Android OS killing my battery (Android OS usually 45% or higher when it should be my screen that is the biggest battery sucker).
I barely use my phone to make phone calls as well. I'd say 1 call every 2 or 3 days.
Same exact wakelocks here. I made 0 phone calls. There is defiantly something up.
I had these two wakelocks too and it turned out to be my live wallpaper that was causing it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35277041&postcount=20
Same wakelocks on my N4....
Solution in my case, delete widget locker....... My Nexy sleeps again:angel:
exact same situation: N4, sns wakelocks killing battery, phone not deep sleeping. culprit? Shake 'n Rotate! app. so add that one to the blacklist as well!
Are any of you running stock kernel and ROM?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Im Running stock kernal and Rom and i still get sns_periodic_wakelock and sns_async_ev_wakelock Does anyone have any idea what they are or what causes them or how to fix? They seem to be on the whole time my phone is on and they suck battery crazy not as bad as most but my android os is always 2nd battery use to my screen or more depending on how i use it and it sucks cause i know i would have pretty awesome battery life if these were fixed or gone. I appreciate any help!
Apparently you can also add: lightflow vibrate on pickup feature and adding a widget to the lock screen..
PowerManagerService and sns periodic wakelock are my main culprits but I'm not sure these numbers mean there's an issue or not...
I just checked BBS for todays use and I have on 9h use 4h on sns_periodic_wakelock. I have been using DashClock on my lockscreen. I will remove that and post back later to see if that helped.:cyclops:
Hmm can anyone say if this looks problematic?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
Yes it does look problematic.
Basically sns_periodic_wakelock kept the device from sleeping for almost three hours.
I have the same issue and don't know what's causing it.
EDIT: Apparently live wallpapers do.
Just writing back to tell you guys how it went. I removed DashClock from my lockscreen and that wakelock seemed to be gone for a few days.
I then later updated the app, and just by updating it, I think it caused the wakelock. This time I'm uninstalling and checking if it comes back again.
Is there a known list of apps suspected of causing this?

I've had dashclock for the past two days.. Not seeing any wake locks. I have all the extensions from the app enabled.
Sns is related to facebook. If you use Titanium backup, go to apps and you can see a blue icon with a letter f on it that looks like facebook letter and labelled sns. Uninstall that and your lovely nexus 4 will enjoy its sleeeeep....

Wakelocks and 60 Hours of Battery Life

I know that there are several threads about battery life in the General forum, but I decided to create a new one, cause I want this thread to take a different direction, and actually help the owners, which are having problems with kernel wakelocks as me.
So... here it goes. I decided to make a test by using my phone mainly as a PHONE ! From the screenshots you will be able top see exactly what I did with the phone for the last 60 hours. Just to mention that my phone ISN`T ROOTED. Wifi sleep policy set to ALWAYS ; auto brightness ; power saver on except 30 minutes when I wanted a brighter display at direct sunlight ; Auto Sync on BUT - almost everything set to sync off or manual, except weather, gmail (mail and contacts) and one more mail sync using the mail app. Used some internet, made some photos, listened to some music, checked mail after notifications, refreshed blinkfeed couple of times just to go through the smartphone headlines, checked battery usage and software update like 100 times lol - and there are the 2+h of screen on. I don`t use facebook, twitter etc.
And now comes the most important part and the reason I started this thread in the first place. I got like 4 hours of held awake time. In the screenshots provided you can see where these hours exactly came from. I`m absolutely sure that HTC One can manage to achieve like 3 full days of normal phone usage if it wasn`t for those sick wakelocks I`m getting (and I`m sure most of you are getting too). I know all of you have read that "7 hours screen on time" and saw the screens from some guys with 7+ hours screen on. If you pay close attention you will see that their devices worked for more than 10 hours and they got less than 10 minutes of Held Awake time. What I`m trying to figure out is how they achieved such thing.
One more thing I would like to point out if someone decides that 4 hours of held awake time are something normal for a 60h usage. Keep in mind that phone lost 1% per hour while I was asleep, which I don`t think is something normal, cause I read alot that people are loosing like 3-4% for 10 hours during the night (someone even mentioned 1%).
So basically please use this thread to discuss any wakelocks (mainly kernel related) you have and ways to get rid of them. There are alot of threads going on in xda about almost every single wakelock I`m experiencing, but I think the info is different for every phone out there. I tried almost every suggestion, but without any good result.
Here are some screenshots from Gsam Battery Monitor, BetterBatteryStats, and Battery in Setting. If you like to see a detailed info please use the dropbox link. I won`t discuss every single screenshot I made, but just want to point out two interesting things I noticed. Although facebook app is TOTALLY disabled in my phone, I still have it as a working process that is causing wakelock as you can see in screenshot 13 in dropbox folder. And also I have turned every single option in Maps to off, except first option (Google`s location service) in Settings>Location.
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/k7reupon5dcy42p/a4VNWyJLGJ
P.S. I`ve heard that with 4.2.2 some things are fixed, or at least not causing so many wakelocks, but we`ll have to wait and see.

disable auto sync on those apps you greenified ...thats all greenify does , (when u put it in deep sleep u cant sync or disable sync on thos apps, apps are auto killed and put to deep sleep) there will be no need to even install it then. there is nothing magical happening. just a another way to fool users.
I've been trying to nail down the maps wakelock which appears to be NetworklocationLocator. It's been driving me mad! I disabled everything in maps but no better. Then I found another setting and I've had a huge improvement since.
Try this:
Settings > Accounts and Sync > Google > Location Settings > Location Access. Now turn off Google's location Service.
This will give you loads more battery and use less data. The downside? The weather location doesn't show current location. I just fix the weather manually to my home town. That's all I need. If I'm passing through Slough on the train I don't need the weather forecast for it! Also in maps it doesn't give you an approx fix, instead just turn on GPS like you would anyway and get the fix.
i really don't see much,if anything, wrong here. You have 5 hours and 50 minutes of awake time, less 2 hours and 10 minutes where the screen was on and another 1 hour and 5 minutes that the phone was active. So in reality you only have about 2.5 hours of time out of 60 where the phone could have been in deep sleep but wasn't.
Out of that 2.5 hours, 1 hour was google talk/hangouts, which you can simply sign out of, and 20 minutes is htc weather updates. That's leaving you with just over an hour out of 60, or about 1.5%, which is excellent.
You could probably do even a bit better by greenifying facebook and maps.
The kernel wakelocks are normal, the phone needs to spend some time keeping the OS running and communicating with the cell towers, i bet everyone will see similar msm_hsic_host usage as long as they have the cell radio running.

I keep mine logged into Google Now; I have the widget on my desktop. I have not seen any battery impact.
To OP:
I see that you are having 2 days of No Data Connection in BatteryStats, as shown below. Is it because you are connected to Wifi all the while instead of connected to the 3G mobile network? And your wifi has been turned on for more than a day. Basically, is 3G that kills battery. Perhaps you can try not to be connected to Wifi and see if the phone can last more than a day?
Thanks!
Every Android user should try Greenify:

It's an amazing app! With great smoothness and battery life.:good:
u can go to settings ' apps , all disable google maps . u will then see google maps not running in the backgrounfd
use a 3rd paty app for navigation if u need it

[Q] TWO Android systems draining battery??

Good day to you all,
Recently after a small android update (still having version 4.4.2) I noticed the battery was draining faster than I'm used to. Before that, it was consuming roughly 1% per hour in idle. This has changed now to 3-5% per hour. Looking at the battery info I noticed the Android system was the biggest batterysucker here. Not only that, there are even TWO Android systems shown and I began to think there's something wrong here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2908920&stc=1&d=1408796626
Also looking at the wakelocks shows that my phone is barely able to get into sleepmode.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2908921&stc=1&d=1408796626
Before posting this thread I have literally tried every option to see if it could lessen the battery consumption:
- Disabled Google location reporting services
- Disabled GPS
- Disabled Google sync
- Disable Wifi when in Sleep mode
- I don't use Google Now so it's disabled
- Widen the Facebook refresh intervals to 4 hours
- Wiped the cache partition
None of the above worked and I started to think that the second Android system here might be the cause.
Should there be a second Android system consuming battery? What could be the problem here??

Hi ,
is hard to tell with what you show here...get an app like Better Battery Stats

Hi mate
This is from the thread :
Q:Why installing BBS as a system app as everything works with root?
A: Starting with Kikat BBS has 3 modes: without root a limited mode provides a minimal set of stats. With root the set of stats is complete but some stats (other, partial wakelocks, processes) still use a workaround. Finally with the system app BBS is fully featured without any workaround.
For this cases root is good to have as it gives you a better access to all the process running , try without root and see what kind of info you get
If it's a conciliation, my android (currently on AOSP) is also running two android systems. Not exactly the same name (Android-System and Android-Besturingssysteem), but you get the idea. You mentioned quite a few things you've already tried, but what about existing widgets and or android apps you've installed? Usually (for me anyway) battery drain is an installed app not exactly behaving nicely.

So does this mean I'm not able to see the exact cause of my wakelocks since my phone isn't rooted?? I have installed Gsam Battery monitor from Google Play, hopefully it will give me (and you guys) the relevant information after keeping my phone on idle for a while.
@Skyrider: The weird thing is that in my case, it DOES display the same name twice. Doesn't that seem weird? I can't see any Android OS (besturingssysteem) displayed.
Also, if I have a battery heavy app, shouldn't it be displayed in the battery info screen as well? I only have the Weather widget and a News widget (NU.nl) on my homescreens. Haven't installed many apps except for Facebook and a few games that barely use background processes.

In my opinion, that's the problem with the default battery information. In my years of experience, it usually never knows the information that you need what exactly is braining the battery. If your battery is still being drained, I suggest to remove most of your apps. Only for a day orso. It should be enough to gather the information to know that at least one of your apps was the cause of it.
It's a pain to do it. But It always has helped me rather than relying on apps of which usually doesn't work out for me.
Also. Might be a good idea to alter your system language from Dutch to English and check the battery info again to search for the duplicate running system on google. You'd expect "Android System" being enough, but who knows that a different language might show a different name.
Ok, I don't have the slightest idea what happened but my battery duration is amazing now. After installing Gsam Battery Monitor and charging my phone to 100% I went to sleep and after 10 hours of standby I looked at my phone and it was on 93%. My phone doesn't consume more than 0,6-1,0% per hour now in the last 3 days!!
I haven't changed anything except choosing to use Wifi and mobile network for location services but not GPS. Weird thing is that I tried that option before without success.
I'm happy now
I'm still confused about the 2 Android systems in my battery info screen though. That might be a good idea to try @Skyrider but I do remember that "Android OS" was displayed differently in Dutch a while back. I'm guessing you have your phone language in Dutch as well since you're seeing "Android Besturingssysteem" on the battery info screen?

Yea, I'm using the Dutch language. But I'm not using the stock ROM of the phone, so hence I am seeing different systems running in the background. But I'm glad the battery is semi-fixed.
Ok, so I changed my phone to English and behold, one of the "Android Systems" indeed changed to "Android OS"
I could have sworn it was like that when my phone was in Dutch.
Perhaps someone with the stock ROM in Dutch could check that out?
No idea if this helps but i thought might as well contribute what it sais on my phone

Thanks a lot for confirming this! I guess Android OS is indeed translated to "System" for Dutch S4's.
Have you tried my suggestions in the opening post?

Battery Life Tips and Tricks Thread

I've noticed this phone has hit or miss battery life depending on what you have installed, greenified and frozen. I thought it would be a good idea to create a thread where everyone could share their battery life tips and tricks on this phone.
Below I posted what I have done to maximize battery life. I have not rooted my phone yet, so none of the below tips require root.
I disabled all bloatware apps that came with the phone. I did not disable any of the Asus applications.
I utilize the Asus autostart manger and denied auto start to all my applications except music applications, messenger applications, and google photo sync.
battery sucks. drain to much.
Just use until you have 5% free battery, this should make at least your day
With Android OS taking so much thanks to lollipop, there is not a lot to hope.
We wont see a good battery improvement until we get 5.1
Luckily, that is in the future for this device acc. to Asus.
Since the issue seems to primarily be Android os draining the battery I don't think most battery saving measures will make a difference. We will just have to wait for an update
When I was looking at the phone reviews people were claiming 8 hours screen on time, I can barely get 2 hours screen on time.
The problem I'm having is that the phone never goes to sleep and is constantly awake. Has anyone else seen this issue?

Which firmware version are you on. I've wiped the phone once already, did you clear any caches? It's driving me mad

I'm on 2.18.40.12 (ZE551ML of course), I restored the phone from backup & restore in settings (It may take 30 minutes or more). Before restoring I had 45+% of Android OS during the night, now 20% more or less, but, as said, also in BBS I can see deepsleep in frequencies.
Someone posted on Zentalk to turn off remote lock and scan for security threats in google settings. Not sure if it helps or not.

I wiped my phone yesterday and restored back up like you suggested and it seams to have sorted out my wake lock issue. I wonder why that is?

Glad you solved, but don't know why, maybe they are working hard on the firmware and there are lot of changes that can cause problem, maybe we have to wipe after every update, Intel processor and Lollipop are so unstable right now!

Ok so this is my battery with a normal day of use... Tomorrow ill show the results with your sugestions. My normal days have gsm calls(normal phone calls) whasapp (chat) youtube, twich, game like plant vs zombies 2, look at gmail, surfing internet, taking pics like 25 today.
I notice that battery drains a lot more while photo app open.
I use doble sim as you can see
If you want to test app battery drain, try GSAM Battery Monitor, or for some extra functionality the Pro version. Also very useful to determine what is causing wakelocks when you run into them.

Everyone is always wondering about Android using the most battery. Without doing some in depth debugging and tracing I would guess Houdini falls under Android. Because the ZenFone 2 uses the Intel processor a binary conversion for ARM instructions takes place with Houdini. More than likely you have a lot of apps native for ARM.
Force closing asus support app and zenui services app from apps setting gives me good amount of battery boost. Apart I have also disabled google books, movies, plus etc. I don't know if its placebo effect but someone can try and confirm. These app tend to restart at times so if you feel the battery decreasing at high rates again, make sure you force close them again.
Roughly speaking, I tend to get 3-5 min per percentage of screen on time with this which totals to 5 to 6 hrs on SOT on continous usage. Without the apps being force closed, I barely get 2min/%. The usage scenarios are normal web browsing, chats etc. This is using mobile data. It gets even better with wifi.
Try and let me know if this helps.
Maybe I don't use my phone as much as other people. I posted this last night on another forum. My phone was unplugged at 07:00, It's now 21:00. I have 80% battery left and the battery monitor shows 3 days left
I have received email, 3 phone calls and text messages. I checked Twitter a couple of times with the browser. I have read Google News a couple of times and played GSN Casino for about 20 minutes.
In Auto Start Manager I turned off Docs, Sheets, Skype, Slides, Translate, Amazon Kindle, Data Transfer and Web Storage. Everything else is Allow, but I have no social networking applications installed.
Its looks like battery life is a right mixed bag. At the start of the week I was suffering wake lock issue, my phone wouldn't go into deep sleep and was constantly awake. I wiped and restored from backup which seams to fix the issue.
Got up this morning and it looks like the wake lock issue is back. I don't know what to do to fix it.
Feel like giving up on the phone and sending it back if I can
