Should I update my Note 3? - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi !
Today I bought my Samsung Note 3. I've been reading this forum for a few days and I have a question.
I have heard of problems rooting/unlocking bootlodaer in some updates. My phone is MJ3 (i don't know if It's old or new)
and I don't plan on rooting my phone for few months but someday I will finally get tired of stock ROM. My question is- Does updating software gives any benefits (battery, RAM etc) and should I care about not being able to root without triggering KNOX? Or should I be calm that by the time I will finally decide to change something there will be possibilites to safely root/unlock bootloader?
Thank You very much !

Official Dev & un-Official Dev
both of them work and it means u will be able to root and unlock all firmwares (updates) after few days.
SO if u don't have plan for rooting now SO update it (setting > general > about > software update OR kies)
updates are official to make it more stable
for the latest update of firmwares u can also check http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/
i m on MK1 and for this update samsung just mentioned stability
:good:

DUDE! Battery Life is TERRIBLE on newer upgrades, I have SM-N900 tho.. But i think it's about same for 9005. Enjoy ur phone on MJ3 till this thing is fixed. Afterall, nothing special has been added. I regret that i upgraded. Cheers!

Okay guys, thanks for the answer. As you suggested, I will stay with MJ3.

[Q] To update or not to update...

Hi All
Having had every previous version of the Galaxy S, I've finally gotten around to getting the S4.
I've been reading up on all of the extra security issues this device now has (a la Sony) and am disappointed that I can't be as flash happy as I like to be for fear of voiding the warranty.
Anyway, I'm on Vodafone UK and am running an old firmware, XXUAMDD. Kies is offering me an update to MGG, but I know this will lock the bootloader.
So I'm wondering if there is any point in upgrading now? Ideally I'd like to have 4.3 running, rooted and warranty still valid, but I think at the moment this may be asking too much.
Any views welcome please!
Cheers
Well my advice is simple , if it s not broken do not update. there are no differences between those 2 versions apart from having a locked bootloader and the pain in the ass knox.
The mgg firmware will also give you the ability to move apps to sdcard but foldermount is a better alternative that will work fine with your version.
Are you sure MGG has new bootloader? I don't think it does.....

yes mgg was the first one with the new bootloader . you can always refer to the knox questions and answers thread for various information about knox .

[Q] new vs old bootloader?!

So because my phone had some display issues and I could get a good deal, I bought a new note 3 today lol. (gonna sell the other)
On my first I "messed" up and updated with odin to debrand without thinking. This put on the new bootloader as you all hopefully know by now.
Well now the new phone still has the old bootloader, but since I still could get root on my other phone with the new bootloader, I was wondering what the actual difference between those 2 is?
On the S4 the new bootloader actually introduced the SELinux enforcing status and Knox, but all N3s ship with that already, so what is the difference and why should I try to keep the old bootloader?
Does it have more or other attack vectors for root exploits than the new?
ADD: And how can I debrand and update safely without updating the bootloader prior to rooting?

That depends on if you care about losing your warranty or not. If you don't care there are plenty of options (including CF-Root). If you care about your warranty (don't want the knox flag to be tripped to 0x1) search for root de la vega in the 'original android development' Note 3 forum. Because you're still on the old bootloader (mi(x) or mj1) this might still be an option. Beware: I'm on the international Note 3 (SM-N9005), so please do read what to do on your phone model. Good luck!
If you update to the new bootloader then you won't be able to downgrade to older version.. flashing custom roms won't be an issue but downgrading via odin will be impossible AFAIK. I heard that there were a lot of efs bricked on the note 2 after a similar bootloader update when users tried to downgrade firmwares or even radios so I haven't updated key bootloader and it isn't necessary so you can stick to the old bootloader as well if you want

[Q] Installing 4.4.4 and keeping root and Knox 0x0

Hi everyone.
I received my Galaxy s4 yesterday the c9515L variant and it came with the 4.4.2 version of android. Using TowelRoot I rooted it and now is working fine , It constantly wants me to upgrade to the newest version (I guess 4.4.4) and I wonder if i'd loose the root and if the Knox would be activated once I try to do the root again.
Also I installed Xposed and some modules, did that trip the knox?
Also, Is there any ROM available that won't trip the knox to 0x01 and having more features thatn stock? I guess to install the Rom I'd need Recovery and thus tripping knox...
Sorry for asking so many questions but as you can see I'm new to the SGS4 comunity.
Thanks.
1. Do you mean GT-i9515L? coz C9515L doesn't exist...
2. The update isn't android 4.4.4 for sure.

First of all, my mistake, what I meant was I9515L.
And, If I currently have the 4.4.2 and it wants to make a system update in "your" opinion what would that be? 4.4.2.1?? No? I though so..... thats why I said 4.4.4.
Any information regarding my questions would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

Tale a look for example in Sammobile.com your updates and you will know something more of your device. It is likely that new models of Samsung using TW will update directly to android 5.0 Lollipop in early 2015 (but your device no maybe). Press "THANKS" button if the info helped you and Merry Xmas

Updating to 5.0 and keeping root?

Hi Guys
There's an OTA 5.0 update ready for my GS5. The problem is that I have root (Towelroot) and want to keep it.
From what I've been reading it looks like all root methods are either ustable of KNOX tripping.
Thanks in advance.
Same issue here
I've got a G900F - no carrier, but running on 3 in the UK anyway. When I got it, it was on Kitkat, and Towelroot wouldn't work due to the compile date being > Towelroot's ability. I downgraded the kernal as per the thread in the General section (as a note, the thread "How to root - all variants" is so far out of date, it's going to lead to people with less experience nuking their devices, perhaps we should unsticky that thread and write up a cleaner version for all the variants out there?) then rooted, and changed the kernal back to my original one.
Great - now I have a rooted, KNOX 0x0 S5 running kitkat. Now Lollipop is available and I'd like to update. So some questions on how I do this and...
1. Retain root with KNOX 0x0
2. Not trash my installed apps / configurations
I know I'll need to update via say Kies as OTA won't be available to me but if/when I update will I keep installed apps / configs? And how do I keep root without affecting KNOX?
This would, I imagine, be a common scenario and worth creating a sticky / section in an updated "How to root all variants" sticky.
Thanks everyone,
a.
Take this only as a pointer because I can't remember exactly what I read, but I think you can update to Lollipop using Mobile ODIN Pro with the Pre-Root option checked, using a stock Lollipop ROM from sammobile / XDA so long as you are already running a rooted KitKat ROM, and that doesn't flag the KNOX counter
Im new to the S5 and just gathering info myself, so make sure you check up on that yourself thoroughly first

Thanks for reminding us of Mobile Odin Pro. It's got the ability to reinject root on firmware installation and not tripping the binary counter.
Can someone confirm whether this method still works on Galaxy S5 when installing 5.0 firmware?
The last comment from Chainfire in his mobile odin thread was that it wasn't compatible yet.....but being worked on......no updates since that post.

Yep, that's what I thought as well. I guess I will have to wait a bit. No big deal.

Hi Mike, search the forums before asking any questions. Search google. Don't expect everyone to do your job for you. Post your threads in the right section. This question has been asked and answered a million times and you'd know this if you took 5 minutes to search a little bit.
Here's your answer https://www.reddit.com/r/galaxys5/comments/2ubsbs/guide_rooted_android_50_for_the_international/
out of curiosity, why dont you want to trip knox flag

What model do you have? Find out in phone settings in system / phone info. Sm-g900a has locked bootloader. I think verizon's phone also has a locked bootloader.
The link I gave you shows how to upgrade to lollipop, root it and keep knox 0x0.
Isn't that what you're looking for?

my bad, you did. 900f has an unlocked bootloader. when you upgrade to stock lollipop through OTA or Kies (or odin) it already includes bootloader and modem. When you do it the way described in that reddit link you flash the lollipop firmware, modem and bootloader separately. Apparently that method of updating needs it to be done so.
Honestly I have Knox 0x1 so I never cared for those methods, btw if you live in Germany then there's no need to care about Knox. In EU we're allowed to flash whatever we want and the guarantee stays intact even if you have Knox 0x1
ps. yes =p

Honestly, I don't know. That reddit link I gave you, I haven't read the guide myself. I just skimmed though it to be sure it was real but I don't know the details of it. Yes all G900Fs have an unlocked bootloader. :good:

Do you mean ota stock firmware notification? If yes then you will have it if Knox is still 0x0 if Knox however is 0x1 you will no longer be able to update via ota.
If you want to upgrade from KitKat to lollipop you must wipe data from recovery to avoid any issues. It is also not recommended by me to use titanium backup to restore apps because some might not be compatible with lollipop yet or some of the app data made for KitKat may have a conflict with lollipop system, however lots of apps have compatibility with lollipop and there is a chance you will have no issues at all when using titanium backup. Even if I said I don't recommend restoring data after such a major upgrade I do recommend having a backup whether it's with titanium backup or nandroid etc because you're able to restore apps one by one and make sure that what you restore won't be problematic.
Edit - if you update with flashfire app, there is an option to keep root when flashing from rooted KitKat to lollipop and users have reported that that feature does work for them (I personally haven't tried it).
