Wifi home issues - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I'm having serious connectivity issues with my home network foe the nexus 7. The tablet connects to the internet just fine, but everything is so deathly slow. I decided to take it outside and see if this was a problem with my router or the device. I tested it out at my school, my girlfriend's house and best buy. The issues disappeared: Play store fully loaded, I could download apps very quickly and the YouTube app loaded fine. However when i returned home, the same problems reappeared. Obviously this means that my router is not properly configured for this device, which is odd because all my other wireless devices connect to my network perfectly. If anyone can tell me what is necessary for me to do, I would very much appreciate it.

Please provide more info e.g router make and model.
Other devices connected to router and when u say slow it means slow web browsing but fast downloading or over all every thing is slow ?
Please ignore my spelling mistakes. English is not my native language.

Thank you for responding, your english was just fine. My router is a linksys E3200. I have 2 laptops, a galaxy s4, playstation 4 and kindle all connected wirelessly and they work perfectly. By slow, I mean that the play store does not filly load with images, 10 ,b apps take about two hours to download from the store and YouTube takes forever to buffer. As i explained above, this only happens when the device is on my home network.

ok i have E4200 and i had some what same issue too. all i needed was to update my router firmware.

I have the same issues with my Nexus 7 after updating to Android 4.3. Any ideas what I can do???

Hey, I have the same problem. Every internet connection is very slow (Chrome takes forever to load small pages, youtube videos dont start playing, ... ).My router is e3200 with actual firmware and n7 with lollipop. When I deactivate the 5ghz channel on the router the problem disappears.

Acer Iconia A500 messing up my wifi?

Here's the deal and I don't know that this is the right forum but I don't notice it on any other device. I have a WiFi Router located in my Living Room. My kids bedrooms are located in the back of the house and I have not had a problem with WiFi on my laptop, Windows 6.5 or 7 phones, or Atrix 4g.
The problem:
When one of my kids takes my tablets into their room the internet in the entire house has trouble connecting. It only happens when the Tablet is far away in the back rooms. I was told this may be a priority setting but I don't know what that means or why this is happening. The signal is only 1 bar or 2 from that distance and the problem affects every device connected at that time meaning my wife and I would have our laptops next to the device and my other kid can have his Atrix connected and all of our devices no matter the distance stall out and won't connect. A lot of it is from streaming videos I THINK but if my signal is shared by each device the connection shouldn't be getting sapped by one of them.
any thoughts or ideas to fix this?

Completely false assumption. Any one device can totally saturate your connection... I for one would fine out WHAT the kids are streaming when they are in their room, and go from there...
youtube videos
I don't know if I should blame A500 or not, but after I got the A500 for a while, I experienced several times that my wifi router was in wrong state, I had to log into it and reset it.
Perhaps it's your router. I had a Netgear router that would freeze whenever I would connect to the internet with my phone browser but was just fine with my laptop/desktop, etc. I got a new router and everything has been working fine.

No WiFi in Play Store???

Hey everyone. I just recently picked up this tablet. Its the Verizon 4G version, but 4G isnt active right now so Im using WiFi only.
I can connect to wifi no problem, but as soon as I launch the play store the wifi drops. If I exit, go into the settings for the play store, etc... WiFi turns back on.
Any ideas?
Anyone? Ive noticed now that it seems to be happening using browser or opera too. Last night I powered te tablet off, rebooted my router and fired the tablet back up and it seemed to work for a bit. Im not too keen on having to do this each time, however.
Haven't experienced this at all. Try a wipe? Clear play store data? <-- doubt that would help but who knows.
Well the fact that its extended beyond the play store and into browsers bugs me.
I performed a wipe - no success. I started googling galaxy tab wireless issues and there are posts everywhere, but most were for the 10.1 tab it seems.
Interestingly enough, if I switch to 5GHz on my dual band router, it seems to work fine... but the 5GHz signal is so weak that the tab randomly drops it. It seems to be the 2.4GHz band that being a pain in the neck.
Interestingly enough, my old iPad has no issues with either band in any applications.
Wifi Issue
I just received my galaxy tab7.7 2 days ago and it seems that I'm also having the same problem. After reading online I realised that certain routers don't work well with it. I am not sure about the exact problem but next day I connected my tab to university network and it worked absolutely fine. I don't know if there are certain models which are having this problem or if all 3G versions have this issue. But I may write it up to samsung later to find out more. You can download an app e.g, Speedtest.net from google market and check if your network does work with it or not.
I use intel my-wifi to connect it to my laptop's network, it works fine for first few minutes but then my-wifi shows that tab isn't connect to it anymore whereas my tab shows it's connected to the inernet but doesn't open any page, email etc.
no such behavior from my tablet in last 45 days or so .
try factory setting ....

[Q] strange WiFi problem

So I just picked up the S5 2 days ago and noticed a problem with it as soon as I connected to WiFi at home. I have the S3 and Note Pro 12.2 tablet and they run perfectly on my WiFi at home.
The first thing I noticed was in the Google Play store. When I start typing in the search bar, usually a drop down with suggestions would appear once you type in a few letters. It doesn't do that when connected to WiFi. When I click search, the apps will show but the thumbnail pics won't load right away like they should. After clicking install the bar will say downloading but won't actually start and show any progress for about 10-20 seconds. Turn off WiFI and try through 4GLTE and it works perfectly. Suggestions show up as I search, pics load right away and downloading starts immediately when clicking install.
On WiFi - the Facebook app keeps giving an error that it can't log in. After several tries it will log in and the newsfeed will show but no pics will load, not even the little thumbnail profile pics of people who posted. I go into app settings and clear the Facebook data so nothing is cached, turn WiFi off and open the app while on 4GLTE. The app opens right away and all pics load as they should.
On WiFi - open the Youtube app and it takes about a minute for the main screen to load. Then when it finally does load and show the list of videos, the pics of the video screenshots don't load for a minute or two. Same with Google Play, when I search for a video, no drop down menu appears when I start typing. After typing, click search and the videos will appear right away but no pics load again for a while. Again, clear the data/cache in app settings, turn off WiFi and open YouTube in 4G and it loads everything right away.
Browsing with Chrome however works perfectly on WiFi. Pages and pics load right. This doesn't make any sense to me.
I took the phone back to the Verizon store and explained what was happening. Facebook and YouTube are my test apps. I cleared the data/cache on both apps, connected to Verizon's WiFi and of course everything worked as it should which leads me to believe the S5 does not like my router which is a D-Link DIR-615. I no expert when it comes to routers. I changed a few settings but nothing worked.
I posted a screenshot of my wireless settings. Right now it's on mixed n,g,b and I tried n only and g only. I disabled auto channel scan and tried each channel individually. Nothing.
My next course of action is to buy a new router which I shouldn't have to do. If anyone can help me avoid doing that it would be much appreciated.
Thanks

I agree with your tentative conclusion. There is scant evidence that it is the phone. And your phone works fine on a different wifi. Most of your app quirks simply sound like expected behaviour if your dlink is slow to establish a connection. It's far more likely that it is the router doing something odd or not coping well with local channel interferrence.
Moreover dlink routers are famous for having quirks not normally seen on other name brand routers. Try defaulting your router configuration, setting it to a low performance mode if your dlink has that, force it to use a different channel and upgrade the router firmware. Even better, buy a real router.
This isn't a router forum though. You'd be farther ahead posting in a router forum than here.

I didn't know D-Links were garbage. I'm not going to bother troubleshooting in a router forum. I think you're right and I just need a to buy a new one. What brands are considered "real routers"? I'll head over to Micro Center today. I see on their web site that Asus, NetGear and LinkSys have gotten decent reviews. Anyone with the S5 use any of those brands?

Any of those three are fine. I'm not a huge fan of Netgear but they're okay. Linksys is good. The higher end Asus routers are some of the best consumer routers period. I'll vouch for the rt-n66u and rt-n16. The last time I looked about $130 and $75 respectively. If you want to spend less, buy whatever brand name, gigabit class router is on sale.
An advantage with the Asus models is that you have the option of flashing more powerful, third party firmware like tomato to add all the features you'd find on a $600 enterprise router.

[Q] Varying results using nexus player on different routers

Hi guys,
So I just got the nexus player for Christmas. After struggling through wifi connectivity issues, I finally managed to get the NP up and running. However not perfectly. Far from it.
I've trialled using the player on two different wifi connections:
1. My home wifi network running on a tp link dual band 1900AC modem router
2. My wireless access point set up on my phone
I've had the best results on my phone's AP, where pretty much everything works, until the connection drops after 1/2 an hour or so. My home wifi network is much less successful.
When connected to my home wifi network, I have the following issues:
1. The Google play store never shows any apps. It's just a blank page.
2. The play music app shows results, and music appears to initiate, but music doesn't actually play. The progress bar doesn't move.
3. The YouTube app won't yield results for any searches. YouTube clips from the home screen play just fine though.
Is anyone able to shed some light on this for me? I'm baffled. I can't fathom any plausible explanation for these issues. The problem is clearly related to my modem router, as I don't have these issues with my phone's AP. But why would some functions work fine (YouTube videos playing from home screen) and others not work at all (YouTube app yielding no results). All this while it all works fine on my phone's AP??
Please, your assistance would be valued greatly.
Oh and merry Christmas all!
I wish I had a solution for you, but I don't. I too have had issues with the Nexus Player dropping its connection, and with the blank tiles related to a lost connection. I love the NP when it works, but it's really buggy.
Actually, here's something to try. Do you normally have your phone's AP always running? I have two wireless networks in my home, and I found that when my NP "remembered" the settings for both of them, I'd get regular disconnects. I have the NP set to only remember/use one network, and I've been getting less dropouts.

Thanks so much for the reply! Turned out it was an issue with my ISP! Frustrating to learn it wasn't an issue at my end at all, but at least it's fixed now. ☺

[Q] Google Play Store and Youtube very slow on WiFi

Hi everyone,
I've got a Samsung M30s a month ago, and I never had issues until now.
Google Play Store and Youtube started working very very slowly maybe a week ago, and now they literally do not load anything whenever I am connected to the Wifi.
Both the apps work fine on mobile data, and Youtube works fine when I open it on the Google Chrome app.
I've tried every troubleshooting I found:
-Clearing cache and data from both apps and Google Play Services;
-Resetting the phone;
-Changing the WiFi DNS to Google's parameters (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4);
-Logging in and out of my Google account numerous time, and relogging directly from the Play Store,
-Turning off all data savers option;
-Turning off all battery saving options;
-Disabling IPv4 or IPv6 on the WiFi.
About my wifi: I am using a router that does not belong to me, but it is an hotspot of my home provider (Vodafone) that i can use for free since I am their client on another WiFi at my parents house.
I tried connecting both to the wifi with my log in details directly or using my computer hotspot as a middle point.
I cannot currently go to my parents house to see if the issue persist using a personal wifi connection (as we are on a strict lockdown here in Italy).
The phone is not rooted nor it has the bootloader unblocked, I like modding and have experience with a lot of Samsung devices but I like the Samsung One interface and I don't want to void the warranty so soon.
My current software version is PPR1180610011M307FNXXU2ASL2.
The phone model is SM-M307FN (European version with the Exynos chip).
I am writing here because everything I tried literally hasn't worked and I really don't know what else to do.
Has anybody else experienced this issue?
Try on wifi from another Internet provider
I do not think it is a matter of phone itself
But: how does Youtube work on a laptop connected to same wifi ?

That's my question too. For what's worth i tried connecting to a phone hotspot (so internet passing through mobile data) and things still don't work.
Youtube works fine on all laptops i know connected to the wifi.
Also worth nothing: when I change DNS to 8.8.4.4. And 8.8.8.8, the situation goes back to normal for a few minutes and then it slows down again.
Question: does the same issue persist even while using a VPN?

Yes to a certain degree. I tried a couple of a vpn with different location (namely USA and other parts of Europe), and the apps did work faster but the issue appeared after a scrolling down the page for a couple of times. I contacted Samsung Support and they told me it is a known issue for a good number of people and that Google is working on it (here's the link to the support Google forum:https://support.google.com/googleplay/thread/40380785?hl=en ).
I guess there'ss nothing to do but to wait.
