Hello Forum!
I am a new proud SPH-L720 owner, and I have managed to get my phone rooted and TWRP running and a backup logged.
My question is, in selecting roms -- which ones will support the Samsung Apps, and why? Any and all insight is welcome.
May I restore them from my nandroid backup in Titanium Backup? Must the ROM be a MF9? May I restore certain system files from my stock/rooted to make it work?
Thanks!
To clarify, can Samsung Apps work with an AOSP ROM, and do AOSP ROMs have the capability to support special features like Air Gesture and Screen Pause, etc..
Once again, any and all info is appreciated!

I believe that by installing an AOSP ROM, you will lose any Samsung TouchWiz features like Smart Scroll, Air Gestures, and even IR remote control capabilities. It may be supported in the future although not guaranteed. And to be honest Im not much of a custom rom dude like I used to be,although there are many that are pretty awesome. Just head on over to the rom threads and check them out.. You wont be disappointed with all the great developers we have here...
GS4 Stock Rooted MJA 4.3,Philz Touch CWM,HotSpot Mod,Transparent Weather Widget...
Thanks! I have tested a few rooms and have settled on the SACS 4.3 ROM which is indeed Touchwiz!
Custom roms are nice, but AOSP sacrifices the gesture capabilities. I was able to install a few Samsung apps such as Watch On and the I worked with both CM 11 and a few other AOL roms.

I hope this is not a totally dumb question as I am new to Android phones:
There are some good apps that come with the note as standard like S Memo and also some Samsung specific things like S Choice. How do I keep these when I upgrade to a custom Rom.
I looked as Astro file manager back up capability, and it doesn't list these there.
Would Titanium backup list them and allow me to save them for re-installation?
Thanks
Chris
You can't really keep them on a non-Samsung ROM as they depend on the Touchwiz framework. Sorry :'-(

are u going to be flashing an ICS rom or staying on Gingerbread? you will not be able to use any pre-installed apps if you are flashing ICS rom. But if you're flashing a GB rom (rocket rom v23, checknote etc) then you can use Titanium Backup but most GB roms come with smemo, splanner, etc. Hope this helped.

Thanks for those replies guys, it's actually really helpful for a newbe like me. I need to explaore the standard apps a bit more to see what's good and whether I need a substitute for any.
I was thinking of flashing an ICS ROM, but I need to explore which one is the best.
If I loose the S.Memo app, that seems really good, is there a substitue in the market? Of all the apps that utilises the pen, that would seem to be the key one!
Your advice is appreciated.
I'm using a modified version of MyScript Notes Mobile which I think works perfect for handwriting notes. Get it here (and thank the guy who modified it in that thread ): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1594325
It's in American/English only but if you need any other language you can download a language pack with 28 additional languages here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1426975
I'm not sure if the ICS roms based on the leaked Samsung firmwares have all the s-pen apps but I'm sure just about any custom GB rom here is based on original Samsung firmwares and thus include all Samsung apps (unless explicitly mentioned in the thread that they were removed ofcourse).
You can still use your pen in ICS roms that are not based on Samsung firmwares though you'll lose pressure sensitivity. If you feel like you'll need pressure sensitivity you could flash a rom based on LP6.
Is it possible to install CM10/AOSP/AOKP apks in the stock TW ROM?
At the moment I'm running AOKP nightly and love the layout and features of the apps. However I miss some of the TW features (mainly gestures, battery life and IR blaster).
The apps that I mostly care about are:
1. Messaging
Found the following thread, will keep an eye on it, but as it stands MMS isn't working.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2254459
2. Contacts
3. Phone
Reason I want the above is because I hate the look of the TW interface for the above 3 apps, and much prefer the clean look of the CM10/AOSP/AOKP versions.
Thanks!
buddy, Aosp/Aokp/Cm10 rom has made using Aosp pure Rom. so if u install any application and it installed normally then only it can work else any Mod can change that using compiling the application.

I'm not sure what you mean.
Maybe I wasn't clear in my first post.
Is it possible to port the apk's mentioned above to Stock TouchWiz firmware.
Messaging has been completed, now all I need is contacts.apk and phone.apk to work.
I'm already running AOKP (and love it), but miss some of the stock features (mainly gestures and IR blaster).
So if I could get a combination of stock rom and certain AOKP apk's then I'd be happy!
Hi All , I am Happy being with you today

S4 is too young to have yet 100% stock features on any cooked ROM. For example, now I am running my old S2 with 4.3 CM10.2 and even not 100% features (sound in dock and HDMI out doesn't work, but it is not a problem form me even having got an HDMI adapter...).
As my S2, I am sure my S4 will end its days with any CMxx or similar cooked ROM, but now it is too soon.
The question is, why would prefer to loose features just to have kit kat now (I really believe we will have it before 2 or 3 month).
Lot of people like to have stock S4 camera app on CM or Kitkat rom including me. I've searched here, and there's only camera port for Google Edition 4.3 rom, but without complete feature, still can't be everyday use. I end up using stock pre-root 4.3 rom; has everything samsung advertised, better battery, more stable than CM and just born kitkat rom. I'm looking to try kitkat again if the camera work good and rom has no other issue.
the most important advice is "patience". you've got to set things into perspective: if you want kitkat, give developers some time, they can't work miracles (most of the time, that is)... pulling such a big system all together takes time, and most custom roms only started offering nightlies for the i9505... they really arent meant for people wanting things to run smoothly ...
Just a quick question, if it's already been asked, my apologies. Is it safe to assume that any custom roms for the Sprint LG G2 will still maintain the knock-on feature and still have qslide features? I live in a spark area, would love to take advantage of ZVA update, but don't really want to lose any existing functionality. Would this also be true of any of the custom kit kat roms? Sprint always seems to be last when it comes to pushing out updates, and I am not a patient person! I want it and I want it now! Don't really need it, but always want it.
Knock On and QSlide are features of LG's stock ROM (4.2). Any ROM based on stock (4.2) keeps those features. There is no stock KitKat (4.4) for the Sprint version as of now, those are mostly CM, and you lose stock features like Knock On and QSlide.
Hi everyone, I am not a developer, and I know this question is probably redundant, but I am wondering what is the closest you can get to stock android lollipop with the note 4 specific features. I understand roms are either based on stock android or touchwiz framework, and you have to pick one or the other, but I'm really torn, I have flashed 5.1 on both my S3 and S4 and I absolutely love it, I'm still waiting for the lollipop update from telstra for my stock note 4, but I think when it finally comes around I'm going to be disappointed that it's more touchwiz than lollipop. I guess my question is like I said before, how close can you get to stock lollipop but retain s pen, multi window, etc? Would it be possible to start out with a TW base and swap out all of the UI and apps for stock LP ones? I know I'm way oversimplifying it, I just really want the best of both worlds, I don't really want to root my note unless I can get as close as I can to stock lollipop with the note extras.

If you are not looking into rooting, I recommend Google Now Launcher. It is the most stock Android UI experience you can get on a nonnexus phone. Since it's just a launcher, you retain all your device features. If you are looking into swapping out all of the UI and apps from TW base to stock LP ones, however you will experience this error message everytime you exit out of an app: "Android.System.UI has stopped working", so I do not recommend that.

You're awnser lies amongst the rooted side flashing a tw rom that is aggressively debloated of apps even some essentials and using stock ones from google and then i guess theming the rom to look like a stock pure lollipop. I heard there are some nice alternatives for the spen usage and multiwindow i have tried some in the past on pure android on note 2 but the experience is nowhere near the stock apps from tw, regarding spen and multiwindow.

If you want to keep eveything, you will have to think about a launcher indeed. Goole Now Launcher will be the closest thing.
Google now launcher: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.launcher
I would say when rooted, flash CM12 official, and use CM SPen addon, in combination with notebuddy for you SPen features. You will only lose the multiwindow (links down below).
Spen Addon: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tushar.cmspen2
Notebuddy: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tushar.spen_helper
CM12 Official: http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4/orig-development/official-cm12-910f-910g-t3046965

yeah but you still lose the epic camera quality.
as much as i dislike touchwiz and like cm12 i keep running on stock rom becouse the camera quality on CM based roms is just to bad.
if only there was a way to get the camera quality on a cyanogenmod rom it would be so awesome i wouldnt even care about the spen anymore
