Another camera question - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I've come to terms with the camera, not so much conceding that it is broken, but knowing that the auto function (ai) needs improvement.
I have been instead using normal mode and manually adjusting iso for much better results. "I can live with this"
But, yesterday, I was at my daughters school and these on stage photos, with iso of 100, 200, 400 and then again on sports mode, were impossible... See below.
Couldn't get a noon blurred picture

With Xdabbeb's camera mod. Seriously, if something is causing you so much grief you have to just "live with this", that's a pretty crappy way to enjoy something you own.

No issues here either. My pictures come out crystal clear. Lay off the cocaine and your hands wont shake so much
mine is the same, has a white haze in any pic i take. i think it has something to do with the 2.1 builds.
Sent from my HTC Heroc using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
The HTC hero definitely has a poor quality camera. It is because the light sensor has trouble working too well in dark environments. Also, the shutter speed is very very slow, the slowest shutter speed of any digital camera i've ever used on any phone.
On 2.1(any rom) it seems the shutter speed is even slower. This is probably due to a bug in the 2.1 camera driver.
Take a picture on your HTC hero with 2.1 of something that's moving. I guarantee you it will be VERY blurry. Take it with 1.5, it will still be blurry, but not nearly so much.
Now take it with, for example, the droid. It will come out perfectly on the motorola droid running 2.1 with it's 5MP camera.
Megapixels don't equal quality level >> http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/mpmyth.htm
Pro tip: In camera, under settings, manually set ISO to 800. You'll get much better pictures. under 1.5 or 2.x the auto iso is crap.
If you still get lousy pics, check your lighting, and clean the camera lens cover.
If you STILL get lousy pics, take the phone back and get a refurb replacement.

What he said. I was almost as disappointed with the Hero camera as I was with the Moment. However if you set it to 800 and make sure you change the lighting manually too you can take pretty good pics. Not as good as we would all like, but still good.
ok hate to break it to ya but you are talking about a camera on a cell phone.
first just becuase it has 5 MP doesnt mean a dam thing I can get the same quality photo from a 2mp point and shoot as I can from my 24.5mp DSLR all the MP really mean is that you can enlarge the photo more without degredation.
second follow the instructions above they will gain you a few stops of shutter speed since being on auto probably keeps it at around 200-400 as that is normal native ISO.
after that go into settings and unless you are taking a bunch of photos of landscapes change your metering mode to center or spot if you are mainly taking photos of people then this is going to give you a better exposure of the person.
in my opinion this is why cell phones dont need these kinds of cameras on them. they give a more functional and customizable camera and instead of trying to understand basic camera functions people are just going to say "this camera is crap"

I agree. Not every idiot with a camera is a photographer. Mostly they're just idiots.
There's just no way around it, the Hero's camera is rather disappointing hardware wise, however it is on par with most other (lower end) cell phone cameras. It works for quick snapshots like it was designed, so I don't really complain.

Exactly. It is what it IS. It's not MEANT to take professional grade wedding photos...or photos that you plan to keep forever. It's meant for pictures to be shared on facebook, or flickr. More for social networking than 'hey, let's take all our vacation photos with the phone!'.

That is ridiculous. So what if i'm not a "professional" photographer. I STILL WANT high quality images when I DO decide to take a photo.
And guess what, the Motorola Droid, which is a cellphone if I am not mistaken..., can take pictures that are FAR higher quality than the HTC Hero.
The reason the hero's camera is so terrible is because of
1. The light sensor
2. Shutter speed
Now maybe I am wrong and the Droid really is a digital camera and that's why it is higher quality, but I have a feeling that HTC just put a ****ty camera on this phone...

camera quality and shutter speed

How's the shutter speed on the camera? My wife loved the iPhone 4G's camera speed but didn't like losing 10 calls a day. We've tried the Captivates but couldn't stand the GPS issues. So.. now we are on the Nexus'. I was looking at the X10 for here because of the 8.1...

Hello hallfleming,
I have a X10 and i can say about the pics is great in any resolution, the shutter is quicker, but will be quicker after september update (Android 2.1), one of the most normal reasons that a shutter can take longer its cause if you have many stuff in your SD Card can take a little, but that i think its normal in all the phones,
Any other question about X10i that i can help please ask,
Alexandre
P.S: About the GPS lock its quick as 30 seconds locking (if you are not at a place without windows close).
I get gps fix in max 10seconds when outside, i'm truly amazed by this phones gps!

honestly the x10s camera is amazing.....the quality of the photos are comparable to some cheaper/older point and shoots
And using the Camera 360 app makes the camera better. You can use very low compression on images, getting a sharp details.
Idk what settings does eveyone use for general pictures i get crap quality pics that are blurry
You need some light you know ?
Disable image stabilization (will just make your pictures soft).
Always try to take pictures with sun in the back.
Use EV -3 or -7
Depending on what you shoot play with the metering modes.
When you don't have enough light, you can enable the stabilization.
And again, take some time to play with the metering modes

m8 is it possible to get some low light/night images? Can you take some night landscapes, and indoor images just to see night quality of x10. It is really hard to find those. Thanks in advance!
after almost 4000 pics taken with x10, as a camera phone freak, i would say, the camera is pretty fine outside, but crap inside, my favorite settings are "face detection, metering -average, stabillzation OFF, and EV 0 or -0.7

Is THIS really all the camera is capable of?!?

Or is mine bad?!? Seriously, is no one else getting this problem with blown highlights and over-exposure, or are y'all accepting it? I bought this phone for its "superior camera" and while yes it can take pictures in low light I was not willing to give up taking good pictures in good lighting >8(
I installed Android Revolution 8, then 9, to get the "updated" camera- stock kernel, Dev. Ed.
Attached photo taken with stock camera with auto settings, no custom settings, no hdr (though that has been disappointing as well). Oh and white balance was about 5-800 Kelvin too yellow as well... (sigh)
So do I send it back to get cameras as good as everyone else's or start watching the Sony rumors again? Because my 18 month old Galaxy Note could get this picture right...

If you want realy good pictures you need to buy a good standalone camera..
The time isnt still there (and will be for along time) before phone cameras can compete with good standalone cameras...
I also find the camera disappointing. I love the software features like Zoe, but I personally can't rely on this camera to quickly capture a good picture. And I don't think the low light performance is very good either.

John, my expectations are to not move BACKWARD in quality. Trust me I carry my X100 half the time, but the other half this phone was supposed to fill in and it doesn't cut it.
It's your phone also blowing highlights and having white balance problems? I'm trying to understand if this behavior is typical or not.
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 2
The overexposure thing is a little annoying it's true. HDR mode seems to recover lost shadow detail but doesn't seem to help with blown-out highlights.
Setting contrast to +1 is definitely *not* going to help it.
When you know there will be difficult highlights, setting exposure to -1 in normal non-HDR mode seems like the only response. Not ideal I know. Especially when making such a simple, temporary adjustment requires a lot of fiddling around with menus.
Yep, been playin with my camera all day, had no work in. Found the adjustment settings werent fine enough - swung too much one way or the other on +/- 1.
And indoor pictures where theres any daylight showing (doors/windows etc) caused the images to be washed out, even when focused on the lightest part first.
I think the hardware is fine, just some software improvements are needed. So its not all bad.

ISO & exposure yes, you can, and even better if you want to monkey with settings for every shot I recommend FV-5 which I use frequently
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...NvbS5mbGF2aW9uZXQuYW5kcm9pZC5jYW1lcmEucHJvIl0.
The point of my post though is not to find workarounds but to see if this is COMMON, or my camera chip has issues.
I'm puzzled by the lack of complaints out there and feel like the photo I posted was a good example of average sunny day conditions, done badly. Indoors, low light, we're fine, it's the sunny days that are the issue.
Everyone quiet means either
a) everyone is accepting poor quality sunny day photos
b) my camera has issues and everyone else's is fine
c) everyone is feeling a little bit bad that the camera they were promised would offer 'a great leap in the quality of point-and-shoot photos and video' (http://www.htc.com/www/zoe/) frankly isn't, and reluctant to say so, or
d) other?
So everyone shooting sunny day pics please chime, in I appreciate your input- if your pics are coming out great without clipping I'll start the RMA process, or if yours are getting blown I'll fire up the angry fan-boi machine and pester every HTC channel I can hit with requests for a camera update.

I have posted few times in this forum about disappointing camera or my expectation is too high. Maybe the next HTC software update would fix them. I like the speakers though which is undeniable to be the best.
Camera is superb.
But it's not all things to all men. If you prepared to fanny around with lighting, settings, angles etc for a photo, and expect a high res masterpiece, this isn't your bag. If you want a point and shoot camera which takes nr unbeatable pictures quickly, then this is it.
Mega bright lights will screw any photo up. Your picture is remarkable given the phone was able to cope at all.

[Q] Video Camera Focusing

has anyone been able to find a video camera app that solves the slow stock video camera focusing? on my g2, it takes up to 8 sec for the camera in 1080p 60fps mode to focus. and you have to have the phone be still for the camera to register it's time to focus. if there's any movement and the video is currently blurry, it will stay blurry til the phone has been perfectly still for some seconds. it's very annoying. this was not the case on my gs4 or my lumia 920. both of those would focus regardless if the phone was moving or not.
yeah the video camera is pretty damn awful on this phone. hoping a dev makes a mod that can lock focus like the gs4 does.
Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk 4
Both photo camera and video camera are pretty bad. Pictures don't look nearly as bad though. Videos are just terrible. I'm hoping what the guy above me said.
Just tap where you want to focus. It tracks whatever object you tap.

The only time where I say slow focusing is under low light conditions. Besides that, I just tap where I want to focus and it locks on pretty quick.

also, the framer ate drops even below 30fps when in lower light. I don't mean darkness, i mean room lighting. it's pathetic.

Mine doest do more than 1-3 max to focus in 1080p 60fps...its the F320S k version.
Well, I bought this phone to be a decent pocket cam as well and bought into the 1080p 60fps hype. Disappointed that it is awful for indoor recording at a gym and even in good lighting shows blurriness. Wasn't the 60fps a big selling point for their camera? I'm hoping it's a software or kernel issue but at the moment, LG has gotten me twice with their specs marketing.
@mediumraresteak
Not trying to be flippant here, but are you aware of many other smartphones that can do what you were expecting this one to?
Just thinking that perhaps the combination of fast moving objects and relatively low light without being able to manually compensate is just unrealistic for most smartphones. I've never been much of a sports photographer so if others could help us out that would be great.
Higher the frame rate the greater need for available light this holds true for shutter speed as well. It's just physics at work. Even a high speed film camera needs more light to properly expose at high frame rates or shutter. You can compensate with higher iso but only to a point plus the grainier it will be. Remember light is your friend.

Yes I can think of a phone. Nokia lumia 1020 or 920 or 925. I have a 1020. Have tested these both side by side and the 1020 in low light video recording doesn't blur half as bad as my g2. That doesn't mean I don't like my g2, it just means the camera for video recording didn't live up to my expectations. For pictures it's nice. In 30 fps mode there is a tap to focus after you start the recording. But in 60 fps mode there is only auto focus and it pretty slow. Why they would not give the best quality mode no focus other than its slow auto focus makes no sense.

[Q] How to reduce camera blur? Best shooting mode?

I recently saw an ad on TV for the camera and it says you can take pictures of fast moving objects and have no blur. Every picture I take with a moving object comes back with a blur. Any ideas? What's the best shooting mode? I took the attached photo with sports mode and didn't change any of the settings.
Try sports mode, if that ain't helping, take the ISO off of auto, mess around with it, helped a lot for me.
Sent from my LG-D800 using xda app-developers app
I'm wondering as well. Sport mode still doesn't capture even slow moving objects
Sent from my VS980 4G using xda app-developers app
Nothing I've found will stop that. Different camera apps will at least blur instead of ghosting.
Try super camera. Lower the exposure time to- 12. Will improve blur but lower love light performance

Sports mode or setting ISO1600 are your only real options.
Taking a sharp, indoor picture with anything shy of a dedicated (and expensive) camera is a pipe dream.
For reference, I have a Sony NEX-6 and 50mm f/1.8 lens. This combo goes for around $1000. I can shoot ISO6400 and f/1.8. Indoors, that will usually do the trick, but it isn't guaranteed.
I also have a Sony RX100 (best point and shoot you can by). Again, even at ISO6400 and the largest aperture possible, it's going to be tough to capture fast movement indoors.
The commercials are stupid and misleading. Sorry guys.
I second lattiboy's post.
I own a Nikon D7100, even with a premium lense with F/1.4, indoors you need to raise the ISO to get atleast 1/125 to start freezing motion.
You are expecting the unreal.
Thanks for the replies. I'll try a different app and keep messing around with it. I'm not expecting top notch pics, but if they advertise it they should live up to it.

A Xenon flash will only light up the foreground. Flash is something that should be used only if you really have to... Or you can put up multiple flashes. Then you mess up the white balance
Perfectly adequate for loads of situations. I'd take broken white balance vs a completely blurred and unusable pic
