Rooted and OTA 4.3, factory reset? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

***update 12/8/13***
My issues were resolved by the following changes:
1st issue: audio/video streaming not working over wifi
Solution: uncheck auto network switching under advanced wifi settings
2nd issue: unable to update PRL or Profile (session in progress, please try again later)
Solution: in Titatium Backup, unfreeze Samsung DM Service
I hope this will help others that may find themselves in the same situation I was in.

Running stock, re-rooted after ota 4.3. So many problems since ota update I'm at wits end. I actually like the stock and touchwiz, but this update has needed up so much. Wifi issues, no video over WiFi, no Pandora over WiFi, no Vine period. No YouTube over WiFi, can't update PRL or Profile.
My question: is it safe to try a factory reset at this point?
I so wish I could revert back to pre 4.3 and mja, but know that's not possible. Please advise. Thanks in advance.

Dont factory reset while being stock rooted. Just odin back to mja. The do a factory reset.

Sorry I want more clear in my original post. I already have mja from the ota update.
I'm just wanting to fix my issues related to the update, ie the Wi-Fi issues and inability to update PRL or Profile. I was wondering if possibly doing a reset might clear these issues up, and if so, is it safe to do now or will it screw something up.
Thanks for any advice

What he was saying, is something is messed up with your install and it is better to clean slate it. First, a factory reset only wipes data from the phone and nothing else, so that is not going to do much. What you need to do is download the full MJA tar file and install it, then do a factory reset in recovery. By installing the full tar file, you will be reinstalling the modem, firmware, kernel and rom in one sweep. This should fix whatever the ota screwed up when it installed. By doing a factory reset after and maybe before also, it will clear out any app or left over garbage that might be on your phone causing the problems in the first place. You can find the full tar on sammobile or pm me and I'll send you a link to my dropbox.

Thank you very much for that clarification! I'm a little slow at this, but learning. In the short term, I fixed my wifi issues by disabling the autoswitch function. Still no PRL or Profile updates though. I'll try the above steps and post follow up. Matt have to be tomorrow when I have more time though.
Thanks guys!

4G not working

So. My 4G data (Sprint, S4. Rooted, but stock ROM and such) stopped working. Updated PRL and Profile. It works for a minute and stops. Restore backup. It works then stops after 5 mins. Update prl and profile in the Sprint app, it works and then stops 1 minute later.
Did a factory reset (still rooted) and it worked for a while. Came home, connected to wifi. Decide to try it now and it's out.
I also had the hotspot mod installed. Used it a bit last night.
Could it be the hotspot mod or root? Or an app issue?

Oh good, I'm not the only one! Happened to me today as well, exact same setup (rooted, stock ROM, hotspot mod). I also factory reset and got it working again, but mine is still connecting, it's just slow as ****.
If you find a reason/solution elsewhere, please LMK.
If it matters, I am now showing as Custom in status and in download mode.
To above, are you as well?
I unrooted. Going to factory reset now. Is there any way to get back to stock recovery?
Edit: Also, to above: do you have TWRP installed as well?
To get back to stock recovery flash the recovery.IMG from the development forum with Odin. What stock firmware are you on MDC or MDL?

MDL. Updated in the Sprint store at first. I can't find the file for MDL. I assume I would place it in... PDA? Which slot in odin?
So now that I'm unrooted, I would flash that first? Is there a stock MDL to flash?
In other words, on MDL, can I just use the one click MDC package after unrooting to go back to that? It appears that it restores stock recovery too.
Here is a link to stock recovery http://d-h.st/Ube flash in Odin use the pda option auto reboot and f reset time. Then boot in to recovery by powering off and holding power and volume up until you see recovery booting in the left corner then let go. Then do a factory reset and cache wipe. If all else fails once booted up in android dial ##72786# it will reactivate your phone it fixed some of my connectivity issues.

And how do I wipe the cache in stock recovery?
You will still be on mdl and to reroot use the cf auto root method found here

Okay, will try and report back. Will a factory reset likely reverse what the hotspot mod did or no?
Yes it will. If you don't want to just dial ##72786# and it will reactivate your phone that could fix it try that first if that fails do the factory reset and dial that again to reactivate it.

Then you don't need stock recovery just do a factory reset cache wipe and then once it boots dial ##72786# to reactivate the phone again after the setup process. Odin doesn't flash. Img files sorry for the confussion.

Both me and the other guy in this topic on the same day and same conditions though? Seems somewhat odd.
Same areas? Maybe towers are going through maintenance. I know my tower near my house did. I was at dinner in a high 4g signal area and I only had1 bar of 3g. Very unusual for this area. As I left the restaurant it took forever to update to more bars and wouldn't connect to 4g for a few miles. Same issue? Idk. I'm in Michigan. I do know towers are still under testing phase here. Maybe for you guys too? Just because you have 4g doesn't mean the tower is official and out of test phase.

WiFi Not working after MDL update

Hi. It may just be coincidence. I rooted yesterday everything was fine afterwards. I started looking into updating to MDL since I didn't take the OTA update before root.
I updated via Odin on pc but hadn't noticed that my wifi had turned off until about a hour after.
Its thru the bar and the settings. It will NOT let me switch it to the ON position.
Thinking maybe I am going to need to unroot. Take update ota . Then root again...
I screwed up somewhere since I've seen no body else seeming to have this problem. Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks
J
Note: I was getting the SEANDROID notification after mdl update to which I went and froze in TiB

Just factory reset in stock recovery then go straight to download mode and odin back to mdl, it happened to me before something stays behind and causes issues mine was bc of kernel didnt fully overwrite in odin.

Flash the updated kernel that's IN Crawrj's thread. You don't need to freeze the Seadroid app anymore. Newest update to SU fixed that issue, so open up SU and you'll get the popup to update the binaries. Good to go

Just flash a new kernel, be it stock or custom, you'll be alright afterwards

[Q]Can you downgrade from MJA to MF9 through ODIN?

The Knox Bootloader is.... Annoying
Anyone know if I could flash the MF9 tar in ODIN and revert back to the 4.2 Bootloader
do not you will even cause bigger problems stay cool untill a tar is released they are working hard to see what they can due the only choice you have no is to go to a ROM that is 4.3 but that I know of it is still un heard of KNOX is a whole new monster that I have a feeling is gonna tick a lot of people off love love love Samsung phones but they need to realize this could hurt them....

Don't worry......it's only a matter of time. If u need a stable rom, I highly recommend sac23's custom 4.3 rom. V3 will be out soon. This rom has made it easier to cope with 4.3, well easier for us who are stuck with the Knox......check out his thread. You'll love it.

I wiped everything in TWRP, and rebooted into download mode. Then flashed the tar with 3.07 and a PIT file. Uncheck reboot. Check Repartitition, Nand erase, and F. Reset Time. When it reboots it wiil update in recovery with the little andy dude, and then reboot to load up. I pull the battery and factory reset. It works fine. I updated to 4.3 friday morning. and decided to go back to MF9 so that I could use The HotSpot Mod and Reboot Menu. F**k 4.3...it was disapointing.
EDIT-----> READ ALL OF THE FOLLOW-UP POSTS BEFORE YOU TRY THIS.... MY PHONE HAD A UNIQUE SITUATION AND THIS WILL NOT WORK FOR MOST EVERYONE ELSE.

There is one problem. Now it won't update to MJA. Something is different, but I'm not sure what. I don't care if you don't believe me. I did it, and that is how I did it. There was one other issue. It kept redownloading the Sprint Default Configuration over and over and over. Like more than 50 times back to back.I finally deleted the apk to get that to stop. Outside of that, my phone works fine. I believe their are remnants of 4.3 and that is why it says the system is up to date on MF9 and does not prompt me for the 4.3 update. I really don't know, but m phone appears to be working perfectly.

The OTA. It doesn't recognize any update as being available anymore. It went from MDC to MDL to MF9 just fine. Then stopped. It says it's up to date now? I'm not sure what's going on with it, but I rerooted it and it works fine. I even innitialised it on KIES to set it all the way back to stock MF9 but it still won't show any update as being available for 4.3

I tried it just barely as I want to go back to my mf9 rom with the stock kernel. You get a secure error on pit and also a firmware revision error "fused 4 .... 1" can't remember what the word was where the dots were. It was a no go for me. I tried to odin back to mdc like was mentioned in the previous posts.
:EDIT Definitely don't try this. Caused my data partition to get corrupt. Couldn't format it. Couldn't pit restore it. Philz recovery couldn't mount it. Finally found an option to format data and sdcard. This allowed me to format data and restore. Once again Definitely don't try if you have the mja bootloader. (I'm back up and running and will let other figure this out.)
I just found out why I was able to go back to 4.2.2!!! When I updated to 4.3 via OTA a couple of days ago, I plugged it in to KIES 3 and noticed it said "PDA:MJA, Phone:MF9, CSC:MJA".... notice the phone says MF9! I don't know how that happened, but I didn't question it at the time because it was OTA. I thought it was supposed to be that way. Last night before I went to bed I manually flashed the 4.3 update zip after using KIES to initialise my phone back to complete stock. (It wouldn't load the zip when I was rooted) Anyways.... Well this morning I plugged it in to KIES 3 after flashing the 4.3 update.zip last night and it said MJA on all three. I'm not sure how that happened, but I only got part of the OTA update a couple of days ago it appears, and thus being, it is the reason I was able to revert. Sorry if I got anyones hopes up. I just went back and edited a warning in my first post with instructions.
Bummer!!! lol i was getting all excited.

I'm having the same issue that you had with the data partition being corrupt. I had stupidly tried to downgrade stock MJA to MF9 before checking with the forums if it was possible. It got stuck in the Firmware error message (can't remember what it exactly said), but got to restore it to a stock MJA. And now its data partition cannot be recognized in any computer. IE: Whenever I plug it into the computer it used to show that it is connected via USB and give me the MTP option. Now it will not even do that and I cannot access its data partition via the computer. Kies won't even recognize it.
How did you get to format data and sdcard?
EDIT: OK, dont know how, (I'm blaming crappy cable) but now I do have access to the phone. In other words it's working normal. But in case that this were to happen again, it would be awesome to know how to format data section, so as it can be recognized by the computer. Thanks in advance.

sorry if im a little off, I new to Samsung, always used htc.
how can I reset my phone to the factory default, thus losing root and all.

Depends what firmware you are on. If you are on MF3 you can use supersu and full unroot then factory reset.

Broke my WIFI (SPH-L720T) SOLVED

I have a SPH-L720T
A few months ago I rooted using CF-Auto-Root and everything was working fine. I made no other changes.
Last night I tried to update the phone using Kies so I could start using the WIFI calling. It seemed to update fine and started up but the WIFI was off. Now it cannot be turned on. Slide the switch to ON and it immediately switches back to OFF. I eventually did a factory reset on the phone but that did not resolve the problem. But it did start showing a message when I try to turn on WIFI that security software has disallowed the action. I went into SuperSU and it asked to turn of Knox. I did that. Now the message doesn't come up any more but WIFI still can't be turned on.
Can anyone offer any advice on what I should do next?

Agree with this one. Odin to NC6. If you really wanted, ODIN back to NAF, see if Wifi works, then ODIN to NC6, and if wifi still works, re-root with CFAutoRoot
Thanks for the replies. Downloading NC6. Fingers crossed.
That did the trick without the need for another factory reset. Again I appreciate the help. Thank you.
