I've recently changed the whole LCD/Touch assembly ... and now my proximity sensor is not working! I didn't re flash the ROM after the service, so I know that it was working on that build before...
When I run Phone Tester app it detects the proximity sensor is detecting Far... and when I place my finger over it it detects Near, but it takes around 30 or more seconds, to go back to Far again...
What could be the cause of this? The Light sensor works normally... I don't see any dirt there... but the "hole" does look "hollower" ... maybe that lens thingy fell out... could this be it?
Thanx

I think those lenses are not so important, more important is to have a clean space between them and the outer space. It is possible to interfere some dirt/dust/whatever during replacing touchscreen/combo.
No I can correct you...Lenses and position of those is extremely important to light and proximity sensor.I had to find those lenses here in xda cause my hd2 had many problems without, the backlight regulation doesn t work, and even the proximity sensor was faulty
I'm also searching for that lense, does any1 know where can one be bought or found?

proximity sensor and light sensor had many problems without the lenses...Light sensor was changing my backlight only under the sun, instead now it s about 5 to 6 times more accurate, and even the proximity one gave me many accuracy problems.I had the same problem in a tmous and an european hd2,maybe there are some hardware revision more sensible, that works even without those lenses.
To anyone searching for those lenses,I can tell you it s really really hard to find, you have to search for someone who sell spare hd2 parts from a broken hd2.I couldn t find those lenses in any spare parts store,I asked to almost any ebay sellers and internet shops,I ve mailed to htc,I ve talked with an htc hardware technician in chat, and I ve tried to buy 3 new middle frame chassis that came without the lenses.I had trouble even to find a picture of those lenses, cause almost no one noticed those,i ve lost those changing my touch screen, and I think anyone with proximity sensor not turning on their screen have lost those lenses,or had gone out of position
Finally after 5 months I ve found those lenses here in xda

my proximity sensor without this lens make me crazy :-(

Hi,
i've tried just about anything to improve GPS singal on my Nexus S, i was so desperate i even thinked about selling it. But by accident i've found something interesting.
When you remove battery cover signal from GPS is really good, usable even indoors 1-2 meters from window. When you put cover back - it suddenly drops. Here's the best part - when i use different cover directly on the back of the phone, WITHOUT original battery cover (i have thick back case which you put on battery cover, anti scratch thing) signal was just as fine as without any cover!
Then i tried covering back of the phone with a case from another phone (Galaxy S) and signal was fine.
So the culprit is NFC spiral which is sticked to the battery cover. I'd like to take it off, but im not sure if it is possible to stcik it back in case of RMA or something.
I'd like you to try this simple experiment and tell me if your phones suffer from the same thing.
Thanks
hmm interesting
Lol wow with cover on I get 2-3 .. without cover 3-4.5 ... lol

What about turning NFC off?
Today i took off NFC antenna and it didn't work, which is strange. Now the culprit is whole battery cover. As i said i tried different cases and GPS was working fine with them.
Hello,
in our german community we discuss this problem, too. The Problem isn't the NFC antenna, it's the backcover! Some user tried with another cover from ebay: http://www.ebay.de/itm/250846706756?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 and this seems to work better!

Yup, that exactly what i considered. It's really funny, because original battery cover is making GPS works like s**t.
If that cover form ebay is really working i might consider buying it, i'll try to read original thread, thanks.
Have you tried that cover? My German isn't that great and neither is google translate. But from what i read this is really working, but i don't know how well.
im guessing NFC wont work without the stock battery cover
when did this GPS problem started?
it must be new...

Hehe. Put your NFC antenna back on. Google wallet is awesome.
Hey guys
I have my Nexus S (Blandroid + Trinity T144) tested just now, and now I only realize the GPS unit is on the right side of the phone.
Take off your cover, you should see a black, duct-tape like module pasted on almost 3/4 of the right side of Nexus S (the side where power button is located). That should be the GPS unit.
Tested with cover on, landscape with right side of the phone pointed upwards, I gained a score of 40~41 in one or two of the satellite in my view (GPS Test by Chartcross Ltd). When I test it with cover off, I gained a score of 45~47 in a few of the satellite.
Conclusion is, if you need a better GPS signal, you will need to hold it landscape with camera pointing to the left. Portrait mode will not works too well I guess. I wonder how Apple products can gain locks near instantly.
that's what i always do when i want to use GPS for navigation, pull off the battery cover.
it's almost impossible to get a fix with the battery cover on.
Humm I really wanted to delete this post but there isn't an option
Wow, i tried to get gps fix in my home without cover and it work!
used *#0*# menu to test the magnetic sensor; selftest failed. Compass apps are WAY off. its also reading 270-280T in field strength across several apps. I can recalibrate it (mag field strength detected) via one app, but the compass itself is off by about 85 degrees. I have not exposed it to strong magnetic radiation, stuck it in a microwave, or anything like that.
warranty repair/replace?
Also gyro won't calibrate and lists failed as well

compass/magneto apps now correctly report 47-51t (magnetic field scale) and i tested it with another magnetometer, also tested the compass feature through several apps against a real compass, as well as gyro calibration against a sextant (yes i actually have one lol, had to learn how to use it though first) it is calibrated correctly to within 1/2 of a degree; good enough for now.
I have no idea how/why it fixed itself, but the sensor tests still report 'failed', so its going back regardless.

would at&t be a better option to pursue, or samsung? i dont want a refurb, so leaning towards at&t. i haven't had to return a phone for warranty ever, and i dont want a refurb or repair. i take excellent care of my stuff; other than the sensor issue its perfect.

I called Samsung a few days ago they said they would work on fixing my phone instead of swapping it out with a refurb, i told the lady i didn't want a refurb since i've had my phone in a case with a screen protector since day one. She was intent them working specifically on my phone but I'm still a little eh on that because back in the s2 days i got a refurb with a huge scratch on the screen when they said the exact samething. AT&T is willing to look at what is wrong with the and if they deem its not fixable they are going to swap it out with a new phone which is great. If you choose the Samsung option it take 2-3 days for them to receive it 5-7 days to fix it and 2-3 more days to send it back yet. They won't do Advanced Replacement either. Im just sad because my phone hasnt had any problems like the severe shutter lag or the over heating so hopefully when i get the new phone tomorrow there wont be something else wrong with it. $5 it has a dead pixel knowing my luck
I had the same issue when using a non-stock ROM/kernel. As soon as I went back to stock the problem went away.

samsung galaxy s4 i337 not good
I bought the official flip case. It has a magnet in the front. Unfortunately Moto have used a rather powerful neodinium magnet. So, your phones magnetometer will follow the edge of the case around rather than true north!!!! This doesn't matter for gps navigation, but for on foot travel, and any augmented reality apps that use the compass this case will make the behave oddly.
I don't know what the long term effect on the phones compass will be, but I don't expect it to be good.
In addition, but for me I think it is a small risk, this magnet will be capable of damaging some computer storage mediums and possibly, wiping swipe card data...
I have no idea why they chose to use such an aggressive magnet. I can hang the phone from a metal bar with it, no problem.
Just thought I would share....

Yes sir, you should that. It is ridiculous to make such design mistake on an official case. I was about to buy one but after reading your story I am not sure anymore. Keep us posted.
Btw; you can contact Motorola via their official app Moto Care.
Glad to know, that I am not the only one who is concerned about that magnet. By the way there are two magnets. A weak one to trigger the screen on/off and a strong magnet to keep the case closed.
After removing the strong magnet you will be able to use the compass with the cover flipped to the backside.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYiSdys0zYg&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Edit: The strong magnet was on the lower third, where the cut is visible.

spoke to moto care. sent them screen shots of the magnetometer all messed up. They said they will get back to me, but no one else has reported issues... *cough* bull**** *cough...
I have noticed today that even when I remove the case, the magnetic sensor is all messed up. It seems after a week of use it has screwed up the sensors calibration (probably correctable)..
evidently, part of the cheap price is a lack of proper beta testing of the phone and accessories....
I have ordered one from amazon. Now I will sent it back. I have my concerns too so I wont even try it.

With GPS Status from Play Store you can force recalibration.
.
I can also confirm this. I have a white flip case but stopped using it after a week as it got in the way. I just put it back on and sure enough my compass was exhibiting the same issue. How did they miss this?

there is a small metal square on the inside of the flip cases backcase. I 'think' this is intended to shield the sensor from the magnet when the case is open. It clearly is TOTALLY inadequate to the task. I'm speculating this is what the metal square is for, as it corresponds in position exactly with one of the magnets in the case door, and this metal square is not present on the normal back case..
Simply lazy design and testing... why does it even need a magnet to stay closed :/ its like closing a book with a magnet lol, they get along fine without them!!!!

Thank you for contacting Motorola.
We regret that there is no possible solution. Compasses operate by magnetic field, and any interference with any compass magnet. There is no way around this.
If you are using a Motorola original case, rest assured that will not hurt your terminal. Imam to close the lid affects the compass but not strong enough to damage the terminal or delete any internal memory power. We apologize for the inconvenience.

I don't understand, are you saying you work for motorola? was this a response you got from motorola??
Motorola cannot release an OFFICIAL ACCESSORY!! at a premium price (£20) that causes issues for the core functionality of the device. I will press the issue with motorola until they acknowledge their mistake and resolve to provide me with a refund, equivalent compensation or a replacement back cover that doesn't cause these problems.
Imagine if you bought a New car; You bought official seat covers for your car that the manufacturer heavily marketed to you, but they make the satnav useless. Do you think any car manufacturer would ever get away with this??

As long as the flip shell is folded completely over (so it is flush with the back) my wife's compass works flawlessly. It's actually better than my n4. As I only have one sample to go off of I'm not saying this issue is being over hyped but it isn't always an issue

I've tried it this way. If you fold it completely flat, and line it up to the millemeter, the compass works about 50% well. It generally adjusts to north, but it flicks back and forth between north and where the magnet is on the case. You can also see the gauss meter jumping around a lot.
I suspect the magnetic power of the magnets in the case vary a large amount they wont be very expensive ones after all..
I got one of these from Ebay and the thing was in great condition for costing 160. The only issue is that in very dark environments the screen can be a chore to turn on as it keeps turning itself off, likely due to my proximity sensor being a tad finicky or something (no issues in any reasonably lit environment, even street lamps at night, but it seems like I have to be like 1 foot away from the thing sometimes). Are there custom ROMs/Kernels that disable this functionality or make a workaround where if you say hold two of the keys at once the screen will turn on regardless? I think I'm describing something from a thread a few threads down but it's rather old. This is a really simple question. I know it's not good to ask for recommendations on ROMs/kernels but I'm asking for a very specific feature.
Bump I guess...
I think I figured out what the issue was, it seems to be the proximity sensor specifically. The light sensor seems to be working as expected because this doesn't happen in bright conditions. I also looked up where the proximity sensor is located and it looks like there are a few pieces of dust there or something. I guess since no one is making any suggestions on what has or hasn't worked, I'll just open it up and wipe that dust off by taking out the sensor. Looking at the teardown the top section doesn't look terribly complicated. I've had to fix my Vita's left joystick before so this shouldn't be too much different. I just hope those aren't scratches on the back of the glass or something.
Edit: Actually nevermind I just went ahead and did a Towelroot and then installed CM11. AFAIK all is well now and I'm also rooted, so 2 birds with one stone. Technically 3 since all that friggin bloatware is gone.
