Magnetic sensor FAIL - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

used *#0*# menu to test the magnetic sensor; selftest failed. Compass apps are WAY off. its also reading 270-280T in field strength across several apps. I can recalibrate it (mag field strength detected) via one app, but the compass itself is off by about 85 degrees. I have not exposed it to strong magnetic radiation, stuck it in a microwave, or anything like that.
warranty repair/replace?
Also gyro won't calibrate and lists failed as well

thanks; i hope they either fix or replace with a new one; i dont want a refurb.

Mine also shows fail on both tests but my compass is dead on.

my compass started working correctly again, but still says fail, and gyro says it needs calibration, which it now does calibrate, but still says fail
this is via the same menu system.

compass/magneto apps now correctly report 47-51t (magnetic field scale) and i tested it with another magnetometer, also tested the compass feature through several apps against a real compass, as well as gyro calibration against a sextant (yes i actually have one lol, had to learn how to use it though first) it is calibrated correctly to within 1/2 of a degree; good enough for now.
I have no idea how/why it fixed itself, but the sensor tests still report 'failed', so its going back regardless.

would at&t be a better option to pursue, or samsung? i dont want a refurb, so leaning towards at&t. i haven't had to return a phone for warranty ever, and i dont want a refurb or repair. i take excellent care of my stuff; other than the sensor issue its perfect.

I called Samsung a few days ago they said they would work on fixing my phone instead of swapping it out with a refurb, i told the lady i didn't want a refurb since i've had my phone in a case with a screen protector since day one. She was intent them working specifically on my phone but I'm still a little eh on that because back in the s2 days i got a refurb with a huge scratch on the screen when they said the exact samething. AT&T is willing to look at what is wrong with the and if they deem its not fixable they are going to swap it out with a new phone which is great. If you choose the Samsung option it take 2-3 days for them to receive it 5-7 days to fix it and 2-3 more days to send it back yet. They won't do Advanced Replacement either. Im just sad because my phone hasnt had any problems like the severe shutter lag or the over heating so hopefully when i get the new phone tomorrow there wont be something else wrong with it. $5 it has a dead pixel knowing my luck

I had the same issue when using a non-stock ROM/kernel. As soon as I went back to stock the problem went away.

FP scanner replacement..

My FP scanner stopped working recently...figured it was software related so i went ahead and wiped the stats..restarted, installed new custom rom...no cigar.
I have dropped my phone in water so im assuming its water damage.
Anyone got any ideas where i can get a replacement and get it fixed?
Thanks!
Same here, I can't find a solution at all. Flashing new roms dont fix it neither does wiping data

If water has affected the hardware, i doubt that you can ever fix this problem( if i were you, i would dismantle the phone and try and clean-and completely dry any water off it- the FP scanner and see if it works....but i would not advise you to do such a thing if you are not comfortable with it).
If, however it's a software issue, Flashing a new ROM would have fixed this problem.
The good news here though is that you can use the traditional lock, which many Atrix users prefer over the FP scanner.
another option is too look for a bricked phone or one with a cracked screen for parts to replace the FP scanner.
funny thing about water damage....i dropped it in may...literally 3 months ago..and now its causing an issue...guess i have to live with no FP scanner..

Just got a replacement from them for about $30 with the back as well for good measure. Friend from the US shipped it up here to save.
my old one actually does work haven't determined why my sensor gives me issues (off balance so it records swipes that aren't happening - not sure what the cause is cause it just goes away after some adjustment). the point being you are in toronto so you can have mine for $10 and i would install it as well.

you might not need both, but to be safe spend the extra $5. I haven't used the one I bought since it appears to be working fine.
This phone is very easy to torn apart.
yeah its actually one of the easiest out there

you won't have to go beyond step 6 for this repair.
There is an onlilne outfit that supplies replacement parts for the Atrix, but doing so is not for the faint of heart.. The site is located at www.repairsuniverse.com
I considered going through them to replace my glass when it lost a battle with gravity and a concrete slab, and noticed at the time, they have just about any part that you could need, including the board that contains the FP scanner.

I bought it before I saw your post. You are right. The cover actually rests underneath the FP scanner itself.
In stead of buying the entire scanner, what I did was super glue the sticker back down. It's not exactly pretty, but the scanner still works flawlessly.

Very happy with Samsung After Service

However, can you include a time line from when your phone was shipped to when you get it back. Possibly including any other events in between.
I'm curious what I'm looking at, should I have any issues.

I9500 Screen flickering (Imp.)

Hi guys,
I have a galaxy S4 I9500 version and I have observed a problem with it. I was sharing media with my friend's Xperia Z via NFC, while doing that, my phones' screen started flickering highlighting clock at the top portion.
Later I turned off both mobiles' NFC and taken both mobiles close and guess what my phones' screen flickered again.
I checked it with my old Galaxy S I9000 which doesn't even has NFC, again S4s' screen flickered.
Then I went to service center to show this issue, as they were not having any other S4 there to crosscheck problem, they asked me to visit a Samsung mobile shop. There I checked it with three S4s' which were on display and I found that problem was there with each and every S4.
So guys can you check your phones' for this issue and will it cause any problem to phone as the time passes??
similar type of problem

But I think it could turn into an issue because earlier my phones' screen was flickering and waking up automatically highlighting clock just like shown in that video.
I submitted my phone to them and they have replaced display with new one. Now it is not flickering automatically but it does while holding devices side by side as that sensor gets triggered by any magnet. So there is a possibility that the sensor could get permanently affected by a strong magnetic field and triggers the screen to wake up automatically.

Yesterday I tried something with my s4..
I disabled samsung link, clock digital(both of em), watch on, and dropbox.
The problem of flickering and clock appearing on top was GONE!! until......
I turned on the data network and found it coming back again...
I figured that it happened to me since i updated it to UBMG1 Indian firmware from BMEA
So i am now rolling back to the latter and sammobile here i come
Even i have also tried a lot of things... but problem was still there.... i think it messes with hardware and there is only one solution and tht is to replace the display with new one... if you find sonething to sortout this issue without replacing any hardware part...pls post it here....

I got my screen replaced but in vain.. I think using the S view cover will help because the flickering is caused by s view initiation (black screen with clock) which is initiated by a magnetic sensor..
Buy unfortunately the s- view cover is costly and so I cannot buy it at the moment .
A possible solution is to turn the s-view service off to stop the flickering issue..
If any developer on the site could help us out..

- Actually am using the S-View Cover. But with no use, when its out of S-View cover it behaves erratic by switching to S-View display automatically.
-Yes you are right it can be a software problem ,but take my words, i used a S4 which i bought on launch date in India, i used it for 3 months, then i gave it to my cousin, and bought another new one - this is the one which is showing up this S-View Issue,
the old one which i had was a GEM, not even once i had this problem of S-View with it, both where of same SW revision level, hence there is something to do with the hardware.
am just waiting for the October 4.3 update, if this is not solved in that SW by any means, then am gonna **** on every Samsung technician in the service center, they don't even know the difference between Hall sensor and proximity sensor!!!! , for making them understand the problem in our phone itself is painstaking..
in between is there any change to bring this issue to Samsung's eye.!?

That's not a issue. It's s-view feature in phone. If your phone get close to any magnet/magnetic source then it will activate s-view screen.
A lot of devices like iPad and Nexus 7 have a small magnet in them to provide support for cover/accessories. If your S4 get close enough to that magnet on other device it will activate s-view screen.
I dont know exactly if your other phone that you are trying NFC with, has a magnet. but there should be.

I know that it is a feature but it comes just in between typing process or running through the temple (temple run) and it disturbs a lot so I thought of using the s- view cover so it will restrict the feature to only when needed out initiated by closing the cover instead of coming every time in between activity..

Proximity Sensor ADC Value - Please Weight In

My current Note has the proximity senor issue where it thinks my face is to the phone all the time and therefore gestures don't work and the screen goes black instantly when making a call. This has been outlined in a few threads. Here are two good ones:
This post has actual values for ADC:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/sa...-sensor-issue-during-calls-3.html#post3234634
Another with the same problem:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2520118
I looked at a new note today that Bell is going to let me exchange my current note for. Its value with nothing close to it is about 30.
I would like to know what other peoples ADC values are. Simply enter *#0*# into your dialer, then choose sensors and you will see the ADC value with the proximity sensor. Could you please report that value with nothing close to the screen.
I'm trying to determine what the normal ADC value should be on a new working phone so I can figure out if the new phone (that has an ADC value of 30) is ok or not.
Thanks and hopefully this will help out other people.
Mine seems to stay at 33-35 until about 20cm away from the screen then starts increasing.
I don't have any problem what so ever with the screen turning off/on when calling. Not even once failed.
My values for ADC are 0, constantly 0, if nothing in front of the device. If i approximate my hand it starts increasing, and then the screen turns green and the phone vibrates when the proximity sensor goes from 0 to 1. If i put my finger on top of the sensor it stays at ADC 1003.
Is this how it is supposed to work?
N9005 with MJ7 firmware.
Mine is always below 10 if nothing is in front. Fluctuate between 5 and 9.
Sent from my SM-N9005 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
My ADC values fluctuate between 30 - 34. @antt00, how come yours so low?
My first note idiled at around 29-30. My second replacement note idles between 0-1. I had proximity problems with my S4 so I check it religiously. While values around 30 would be okay for now, but you may run into problems later. The problems come when you have some dust that gets stuck inside on the sensor and causes a higher adc value. This is what causes the sensor to not work correctly. I have to take apart my S4 every 3 month or so just the clean it and then the number will drop back down to 6. Also keep in mind, the reading goes up a bit in direct sunlight. IMO I would get one that idles around 0, this will give you more headroom for dust.
Thanks for the feedback. I didn't get a chance to read all the posts before I went and got an exchange. For some reason their system let me exchange it even though I past 15 days so I kind of jumped on the chance. The new note at home reads around 20. Not as low as some but better then what I returned. I'll have to see how long it lasts and I'll keep and eye on it. It definitely sounds like its a combination of possibly bad/poor sensors. Dust build up inside which is a design flaw. And maybe poor calibration from samsung as it look like from a post I've see that you can re-calibrate the sensor, though I not sure if that may have some negative effects.
I didn't try and push them to let me cherry pick a phone, they were nice enough to let me check the ADC value and firmware version before the exchange. Hopefully this one works out or I'll have to try and get a better one. I'll see in time as my previous one definitely had the dust issue. It was pretty obvious because I could lower the ADC value if I blew compressed air in the ear piece.
i did notice the proximity sensor screwing around on phone calls, it would delay getting the screen back after distancing from it...
the procedure you gave me shows ADC values contentiously flipping from 9 to/through 13 (sometimes chronologically)
putting your hand over seems to green-out the window showing that proximity is working, nice, however, im having shadow greens, meaning, just leaving it on the table, once a minute it goes green, yet nothing moves over it...strange.
ps, no plastic cover used, dont see a reason to use protection with this quality

Yes but that does not obstruct the sensor. It only reaches below it.
Idling 0 with and without direct artificial light (no tested against sunlight). As my palm gets closer the number progressively increases. The screen turns green after reaching 120
I had no idea that a proper cleaning could fix the sensor. Thanks for the info
iiSo say we all!! From my Note 3 (N9005)
Well now I'm at about ADC 40. In two days the value has doubled. I can't win....
I have this problem with my AT&T N900A and the ADC value is between 82 and 85 at idle. If I wave my hand over the sensor it will go to 1000 but unfortunately its still not responding when I pull the phone from my face after a phone call.
I'm not rooted so I'm not going to manually adjust anything. Is the fix just to get another phone. This is sort of pissing me off. I've had 6 or so Samsung phones and never a problem so frustrating as this one.
And now I'm at ADC 90 and when I activate the sensor (screen goes green and vibrates) it won't stop when I move my hand away. There must be a serious design flaw that allows dust to get onto the sensor. Unfortunately I don't see any way to solve this....I don't know how many times I can return the phone and hope to get one that doesn't allow dust in. I guess the next step is to try and talk to Samsung.....
Has anyone gone as far as to replace the sensor? There is a part out there. Its listed as a 9000/9005 part, not sure if it works with US carrier models. I'm having a hard time finding it in stock anywhere though.

I have zero desire to send my device to a Samsung service center. I'd have to order a phone to use in the mean time until it came back. I'd rather just swap a new part in.

when i move one hand about 14-16cm above the device (and move it closer to it) the numbers start to increase

I have a strong feeling that its just dust getting in the way. I was at ADC 90, blew air at the ear piece and it dropped to ADC 60. Though I don't know how it looks like inside. I have a feeling some are sealing out the dust completely and some are not.
I do find it odd though that mine started out from factory at ADC 30

I'm not really satisfied with the idea of periodically blowing into the ear piece of the phone with a can of air I don't regularly have otherwise. They need to accommodate the issue with a software fix for the sensor sensitivity if they can't fix the manufacturing process.

Now I'm ADC 99 and my screen doesn't turn on or off properly again. Haven't had a chance to call Samsung yet but this is really annoying. I also don't want return it and get a phone with the new bootloader. Ugh

Apparently a really reliable/unexpected fix to GPS woes found on Reddit...

GPS issues on the Note 4 are well known and not limited to carrier. You will find all sorts of crazy fixes out there, but I will tell you what finally worked for me.
I noticed that every time I went to take a screenshot the GPS would suddenly snap back to working. After some messing around I realized that holding it by the sides with a little pressure gets it working. Basically hold it the way that Steve Jobs told you you shouldn't hold an iPhone and squeeze a bit. That always gets my GPS to work within a few seconds. It sounds crazy but for me I've confirmed it absolutely works.
Basically Samsung sucks at GPS in general, and especially with the Note 4. I think the receiver is using a poorly manufactured antenna that is the wrong size or something, and by attenuating the signal a little bit you can get it to clear up. It's like adjusting you rabbit ears and having them only work when you stand in a certain position... if you are old enough to remember doing such things.
Give it a try and report back.

Interesting. I'm really glad I'm one of the lucky ones that doesn't have any issues.
Is the hardware part of it loose or something?
I've yet to try it but I do believe it is an antenna issue. Maybe made worse by cases?
If I place the phone in the dash cubby of my car, it will lose gps signal.
But even when I have it on the seat next to me, it sometimes can't locate me directly and jumps.
I thought GPS status calibration would fix but I guess you have to do that every time you reboot?
It is my only complaint regarding the phone honestly.

I'd like to think for the most part I was one of the lucky ones but just yesterday morning I was using the navigation. It found me and plotted my route but when I started moving nothing happened. I squeezed the top of the device and it kicked in. The only thing I have been doing different is not using my case when the issue happened. Of course as tight as my case it it could be simulating the same situation as me pinching it. Or it could have been the initial cause for needing to pinch it.
Probably loose hardware indeed.

Yes, it's almost certainly a hardware issue... check out this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=61755100&postcount=272 and the thread that it links to.
squeeze the sides and tighten the screws... it really works

Yup. The GPS test app would show 20 satellites in view, and none in use. No lock ever. I pushed on the back of the phone and it locked right on. It world's every time my gps flakes out.

Happy to report my GPS on Note 4 gets instant lock every time. Use a Samsung flip cover that is also a back replacement.
I have HORRIBLE gps signal... and the thing that sucks is I need it for work alot.. sometimes I'm using it and the signal starts blinking because it lost signal..and I won't get it back I leave an area or I just won't get it at all!! I hope the 5 has a much better antenna build..
Like others I'm having terrible luck with my GPS but it's only been over the last 3 weeks or so. No updates, no damage to the phone it just loses the lock on the satellites. I've tried every trick in the book with no luck. I need to call T-Mobile but haven't been in the mood to hear "we haven't seen this problem before" and wasting time on the phone with them.

Install "GPS Test" to see. I have Samsung Alpha and it get lock inside the buidling while the N4 sees nothing. I am mad. I hope N5 will be better on the GPS.
It's not a fix but what I do since I use gps for my work I put the phone SIDEWAYS in my cluster area and it almost instantly picks up gps.. it's what I have to do to get service if not it will be almost unusable. .hope that helps
I was reading about putting pressure on the back on another post and once I do that my phone starts working great... what can cause it to do such a thing?

I've been using it and I will get the coordinates then I will loose signal without moving. It's very inconsistent. The frustrating thing is it seems to be only over the last few weeks it's been happening.
I also had trouble with my GPS. I constantly get the "GPS signal lost" message, however this past weekend I tested and it seems that I get the problem when I put the phone in a certain position -on my lap for example or facing down. I have a Galaxy S5 and I don't have any issues at all.
Once I put the phone in the car mount, I don't have any problems. I guess is an antenna issue as others mentioned.

See my problems didn't start until I stopped using my caseology case.
Completely fixes my problem (as long as I'm holding it). WTF Samsung? Do I even warrantee it or switch brands is the question. Tweet #squeezegate at Samsung, let's see if we can get some attention to this manufacturer defect.
