Hi,
I am new to tablets so please bear with me
I downgraded my 3.2 A500 to 3.0.1, root it and than installed a custom ROM Thor 3.2.1 (v12) using Acer Recovery Installer.
1) I've noticed that Email (exchange + others) is gone and no way to put it back
2) Other previously installed apps like Acer Folders are gone too.
3) The tables is slower than before although people keep bragging about how fast this Rom is.
I've seen couple of posts saying that Email is lost because I didn't full wipe the tablet. What is full wipe? is it factory reset? is more than that? is a program that I have to run? I've also seen people talking about clear data + cache? What is this command?
Please advice how can I get a custom rooted ROM to be as close to the stock one?
At this point I should factory reset the tablet to get my email back or I have to start all over again?
Any idea in this myriad of terms an acronyms would be highly appreciated!

When you flash a new ROM, especially a custom ROM based on Asus, and not Acer (like the Thor ROM), you generally retain nothing after the flash, unless you'te merely upgrading from one version to the next.
Before flashing a new ROM with CWM, proper formats and wipes should be done to clean out all residuals of the previous ROMS.
Wipes menu
1) Wipe cache
2) Wipe Data, Factory reset
3) Wipe dalvik cache
4) Wipe battery stats
Mounts and storage menu
5) format system
6) format data
7) format cache
8) format flexrom
Install zip from sdcard
Choose zip file
Flash ROM
reapeat steps 1-4 (not 5-8!)
Reboot, and follow setup in your new ROM.
Some people will consider this redundant, and overkill, but rest assured that you'll not have half the problems that most people have after flashing a new ROM that don't do a proper wipe, and format.
Doing this by memory, will reboot, look at the menus again, and correct if I missed anything in a minute.
EDIT: Just rebooted into recovery, and checked. Method above is correct.

If you want a ROM that is close to stock as possible, hit the DEV section of this forum and choose a Stock rooted 3.2 ROM.
---------- Post added at 11:56 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:47 AM ----------
As to your comment about the Thor ROM being slower. I found that while the transitions were much smoother, boot up lagged and was slower than others, and shutdown took longer as well.
On the plus side, I've never gotten GPS lock so quickly in my life, nor with as many sats as I did with the Thor ROM. I had a look through the ROM, and there are many more files and folders that are Asus specific related to the GPS hardware that Acer doesn't include, thus the horrid GPS performance on the A500.
Thanks a bunch!
Just couple of question: Given the fact that I am already in the situation of having Thor ROM what do I do now?
Or on the alternative given the situation, if I choose to install a rooted stock ROM will all come back to normal?
Note: I don not try to preserve the existent data, just to get the tablet back in a good working state.

Do a complete wipe, format, and install a pre-rooted Stock 3.2 ROM if you want it as close to stock as possible. This is what you want if that's the case.

I didn't initially followed the instructions and I got a rooted stock ROM that seemed fine at the beginning until I've realized it doesn't have the Android Market app
However I've followed strictly the instructions and now I got it all working !!! Many thanks!

Good job, glad it all worked out for you!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS POST!!
I had this problem on my rooted HTC Sensation and went mad. Rebooting, reflashing - you name it, did not work. This saved my life, and in case this happens again (dont count on it haha), i'm safe now. Thank you for posting this.
My first post on this forum goes to thanking you!
For all new to flashing make sure, you always study the directions, and do not attempt till you fully understand each step. Once you do a few flashes, it all will become easy. This is a good thread for the new comers.
Hey guys,
Decided i want to flash the franco kernel on my N4 which is currently completely unrooted and stock. So i need to unlock the bootloader, root and install a custom recovery before i can do anything. Just a couple quick questions first.
- When i unlock the bootloader, will i lose absolutely everything? Including photos, videos etc?
If so, does this also mean that my titanium backup file will be deleted too? - Im guessing ill have to move this file onto my PC first to avoid losing my backup.
I did have another question too... hmm maybe ill remember in a bit. But yeah, any clarification with the above would be awesome.
Cheers guys! Im not new to this, ive rooted my N1 and SGS2 in the past but they both had SD's!
Cheers, Jim.

i believe franco kernel is only flashable via fastboot or adb
When you unlock your boot loader it will wipe everything including pictures and videos. As for titanium backup it should restore with your Google account when you set your phone back up again.

Ill worry about flashing franco kernel when i get to it. For now i just want to unlock the bootloader and get root.
When it comes to flashing the franco kernel ill probably just download the franco app from the app store. You can flash using that i believe?

Yes you can flash using the Franco app providing you have a custom recovery
everything in your storage will be deleted. just move everything to your computer before unlocking the bootloader, then move it back after.
Yes everything is wiped.. but you can also back up all your important things anyway onto your pc and just copy them back onto your phone when you have finished.
Awesome. Cheers guys.
Plan on using clockworkmod recovery as ive used this before on all my other devices.
If i have any more problems ill let you know on here.

Yes, everything will be wiped from the device. Including the internal SD Card. And I also recommend using TWRP, installable via Goo Manager app.

All done. No problems at all. Just restoring everything now.
Now to resist the urge to flash a custom ROM. What do people tend to run these days? I want something that looks as close to stock as possible but improves speed and performance? Cyanogenmod still a good shout?
Cheers!

All of the Roms are pretty good and plenty fast. All of the Roms are fast , but if you like to change your app DPI and also get full screen mode with PIE controls then I suggest paranoid android.
Edit:You don't have to use a custom ROM if you don't want the those features, your kernel will decide how fast your device is. If you want you can stay on stock with Franco kernel and get great battery life and speed.
Hmm ill stick with stock on franco kernel for a while and see how it goes. No doubt ill give in eventually and try something new.
Currently having issues using Clockworkmod Carbon backup/restore app. I used this to backup all my apps/data before iunlocked my bootloader (I would normally use Titanium but that required root).
So i backed everything up. Took the backup file called 'Carbon' from my phone and placed it onto my PC desktop.
Unlocked bootloader, rooted, flashed CWM recovery, rebooted. All good!
Redownloaded the carbon app. Placed the backup folder from my PC onto the phone into the new 'Carbon' folder created when the app launches for the first time. I go to restore my apps and it says 'No backups were found on your internal storage'. Even though i just put them there! Its like the app is no longer looking in the same place to find the backup folder.
Its not my apps im annoyed about so much, but mostly my user data and sms messages and stuff.
Anyone have a fix for this?
Cheers

On my N7, it was not OK, I got the same message. Just emailed that address. Did you not get any reply?

I have one idea of my own.. the device id has probably changed. TitaniumBackup usually fixes this on my N4 if I reinstall but i didn't have this on my N7 as it was not rooted.
Could that be it? If so, how can it be changed .. (and how do you know what it was)?
Hi all,
I'm currently on Android 4.2.2 (rooted, UK version, SIM unlocked) and would like update to 4.3.
My Baseband version is I9505XXUAMDM.
Does anyone know which rom file I should use? I'd like to retain root permissions if possible and to use an original (or close as possible) Samsung rom.
Many thanks

So you were stuck on the XXUAMDM build and simply followed the instructions on the link you gave and all is working well?

Yes I was on the I9505XXUAMDM version (see attached image) and just followed the instructions EXCEPT I didn't use ClockworkMod, I'm using 'TWRP Recovery'. I downloaded the 'GALAXY S4 Google Play Edition 4.3 v1.3 CoOoL_BoY.zip' file, placed it on my memory card, booted in to TWRP, wiped the parts as instructed, then ran the installer. All worked nicely!
I backed it all up first (mostly using titanium backup pro), then restored the programs/program data from it after, so I was up and running pretty quickly after.

Thanks, I shall give that a go then
Philz recovery is basically CWM, so as far as I'm aware you can also run the zip from within philz, However can anyone confirm this?
Sorry to hijack the thread by the way!

Also when you backed up with titanium pro did you choose to do the batch operation and backup system settings and apps or just the apps?

I backed up the apps and their settings (but ignored the system apps). Good luck
So I installed the rom and it is more stable but is still crashing alot!
In Philz recovery when you wipe/factory reset there are two options:
Wipe/factory reset
Clean for a new rom
In guessing I should have chose the clean for a new rom option? I mean the phone still has some of my old data on it so I'm sure something went wrong.
I'm debating just flashing to stock rom and giving up! cab anyone suggest anything?
Cheers

Yeah you should have chosen the 'Clean for new rom' option. It's likely crashing as it still has settings/files left behind that aren't compatible with your new rom. Mine has been very stable since the upgrade, so it's worth trying again with a proper wipe

So it turns out the battery is ruined on the phone, I thought it was the rom initally and I will give it a fresh install when I can.
In the press samsung have stated that some S4 batteries are faulty, Mine has swollen up and the phone no longer lies flat!
Also it only holds charge for about 20 mins!
Anyhow, I have spoken to the local service centre and I can get a free replacement, good news, however will I have to flash my phone back to stock firmware? Or is my warranty still good?
I can borrow a friends battery and flash back to stock fw but will I need to do this or can I just go ahead and flash back on my rom of choice?
I'v never overclocked the phone or played with any battery voltage settings etc, so I think it must be a genuine faulty batch.
Any suggestions?

Nope you can leave the phone software as is, it's only the battery that's at issue. If they want to see the phone just say it's private and you don't want them looking at it. Maybe even take the battery out in front of them as you're talking at the counter so that the phone is turned off, and they have the battery to instantly look at. Should be an obvious / easy swap out for them...

No worries, good luck! It does have the default Google 'People' app, which is the same as the Contacts one. And for music I installed the Google 'Play Mucic' app which isn't bad. The only thing I miss from the Samsung 'TouchWiz' rom is their camera app.

I went for winamp but tbh its layout is awful and I found it very buggy that and my phone battery was already swollen up! haha.
Will report back with results!
thanks once again.
Got a new battery and not had any issues with the rom at all, only issues I did find was that having my SIM PIN enabled got the phone stuck when it booted, I had to take my sim out and put it in my girlfriends phone to disable the sim lock, after that no issues.
I'm in two minds of if I should reflash it or not tho as it now has a **** ton of my apps, I have used titatnium backup before but I find it to copy my buggy software and back it up then reloading it on my new rom hahah!
But a fresh flash might set it straight for longer avoiding me any future headaches... hahah
Anyhow thanks for all the advice.
Peace
Hi all... I have an at&t d800 that was running stock, rooted, and using Xposed. I was at work when I noticed that it was on the recovery TWRP screen. Weird I thought as I didn't restart it. I was having no issues with it prior. When I tried to reboot to system, it went right back to bootscreen. So I did a complete wipe and tried a system restore to a nandroid stock backup. reboot continues to go to the TWRP home screen... anyone have suggestions? I have a feeling its going to take a factory restore of some sort, but wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions beforehand. I can turn it off and on, but cannot get past the recovery home screen.
Thanks...

That's exactly what it is for me. Only they did the download while I was working. Bastards. I'm currently downloading the zip file from that link where we do the firmware reload and uproot and go back to stock... the host site is brutal... downloading at 115 kb/sec... once this is down I'll just stay unroot and get the update and move on for a bit. Wait until the kitkat alphas are in release mode.
I'll post with results when it's complete.

Can not get into download mode either, I tried sideload adb and was able to flash stock rom and I tried CleanROM 2.0, recovery bootloop anyways, I have a copy of backup lg g2 recovery from flashify but I have no idea how to flash that.
Starting to understand the main disadvantage to this phone when compared to Samsung and Nexus. Nexus 5 looking real good right about now.
wow. if they bricked our phones this will be the last business I ever do with att or lg. This is inexcusable.

I can't get into download mode either.... This is surreal - Never had this issue before.. Am I without a phone right now? I can't do a damn thing here...
This seems malicious
I knew not to run the OTA - I chose to postpone or ignore the notice from AT&T -- it looks like they pushed it through without my OK and ended up bricking my phone.... can anyone verify a workaround to get into download mode??
I really hope there's a workaround here.... I can't belive that I would be the only one this happened to because I made no selection to run the OTA -- it pushed itself through without my authorization, so I gotta imagine it did the same to a lot of other people here.... Hoping for a response by morning.. Thanks!
Just to confirm some facts about this update....
Are you rooted?
Are you on a custom recovery. If so, twrp or cwm?

This has happened to me also. With my s4 .att pushed update in middle of night and it messed my phone up. Anyhow after two days or so of arguing with att they agreed on a eairly upgrade replacement and I got brand new lg g2 instead of a refurbished s4 .so now I am learning about this phone and I just took the new update. I rooted and was getting ready to flash twrp threw via flashify but I think now im gunna chill with just being rooted until I get a chance to do a lot of reading I guess before I go flashing anything..
Sent from my LG-D800 using xda app-developers app
Isn't there something that could be froze to prevent OTA's from coming through?
EDIT: Also, what is the Software version for said update?
EDIT2: Nevermind, found that it's D80010o.. i'm still D80010d.
EDIT3: For those stuck in the bootloop, have you tried this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2451696
Apparently the bastards will only allow you to decline downloading it up to 3 times at 4 hours per decline, then it 'automagically' downloads and installs itself.
I saw that info on the AT&T website for the LG G2 update, they are such asses.
I used Titanium Backup to search for 'update' and then froze that. That is the easiest way to fix it for now, but, will cost you some money to buy titanium backup. Other apps can probably freeze stuff too tho.
There are other apps/processes running in the background, but, the one I froze was the update after I d/l'd it to my phone, but, chose not to run it. Later on I will disable the rest of the BS on this phone so it won't be AT&T'ified.
There is a 'Cleantool' somebody here on XDA wrote that can run via ADB and remove all the AT&T crap, but, I wanted to make a nandroid backup of the configured initial setup before I start carving the turkey so to speak.

I'm not sure if that will work or not, my knowledge of Linux and the phones is too limited to say. It was however originally intended for Verizon phones as I'm sure you realize.
Just wanted to point that out so that nobody tries it and potentially messes up their D800 to a state that can't be fixed later on when hopefully some kind soul cleans up after AT&T flaming bag of dog poop they just left on our doorstep.
I recently bit off more way outside my realm by purchasing an LG G2 (verizon) off ebay that apparently already had Clockworkmod Recovery installed. I haven't done this rooting stuff before, but I figured this would be a good chance to start.
It seemed to have the stock rom on it as well, but I accidently click "yes" so some verizon update thing, and now it only boots up to the main screen of ClockWorkMod Recovery v6.0.4.4. I realize this was my first mistake.
So, I figured that I would install a custom rom, and I found the Gummy-2.1-12-30-13-NIGHTLY-vs980.zip as a good choice. I wiped all of the data and caches and begun. I did the install zip from sideload--> and followed the instructions with the "adb sideload <filename>" in windows command. It seemed to have installed correctly. The Gummy ASCII logo came up, as it said the kernal was flashed and installation was complete
However, when I reboot the system, it simply goes make to the main screen of the ClockworkMod Recovery screen. I have no idea what to do next. Any help would be very, very appreciated.
EDIT: I have progress with datechnerd's help.
First, I installed TWRP, which oddly enough CWM accepted an installiation of just fine. TWRP seems much better with more options.
Then I wiped all of the caches/system. Then I followed datechnerd as follows:
in twrp go to advanced
go to terminal
click select
Code:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/fota
afterwords try booting, if no boot go back to recovery and flash rom
The rom was the original Rom, not an altered one. Gummy now loads just fine.
Now my problem is that my sim card is not being recognized, but this is a great start at least. Thanks again.

Thanks for checking out this thread.
I have tried several time. With one rom, it would remain stock at the installing part. The Gummy Rom I have sideloaded several times, clearing the cache/data, etc between each time. Each time it says it is installed, but upon reboot it only goes back to CWM. I will try several other Roms, but I think I may either be messing up the process, or that the verizon update messed something up for me that I am unsure of

Wow, that would be really nice of you. I'll use whichever ROM is the easiest for you to do this CM, ParanoidAndroid, whichever. The Team Gummy rom (Gummy-2.1-12-30-13-NIGHTLY-vs980) was one that seemed to at least in theory be loading on my device. Right now I just feel foolish like I've bricked my device, so anything that makes it usable would be really helpful.

Sorry to hijack your thread, but I have a problem like this. I also accidentally got the Verizon software update before I rooted, and I'm trying to get the gummy lot last rom, but I am not even able to install the ROM. It gets to the end, and then says there is a Loki error. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Yes, I wiped all of those before doing the install. Maybe there is no turning back once someone clicks on the verizon update?

I have been sideloading using the command prompt in windows with my device connected to my computer via USB. In CMR, when you click to "install zip from sideload," you can install a rom by simply writing "adb sideload <romhere.zip>". The above command that you have provided does not have any effect in windows command prompt/. I clearly have a lot of reading to do about this adb stuff, as there seems to be another way to load these roms. I apologize for being way out of my league with this stuff.
Edit: I wonder if it's possible for me to change over to TWRP. IT seems that is more stable and works with your "fix." Do you think the verizon update will prevent me from doing that as well?

Is that code for the command prompt in windows? adb shell says error: closed for me. I feel like I am just doing this all wrong
Edit: somehow, it let me switch over to TWRP. So I am going to figure out how that works, hoping it will work now. Thanks for your patience.
