I mainly rooted because you can use multi screen and the pen window with any app and as many apps as you like. Also bloat ware takes space so nice to free up the space if I don't use it
Sent from my SM-P600 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I think when people say removing bloat speeds up their systems is the just the placebo effect. In most cases bloatware has no impact on performance, where is does, it can be disabled. An example is this is Story Album, which can run in background trying to put together an album. But if you disable the app, it doesn't do that. Removing bloatware also doesn't add usable space in most cases since bloatware is typically located in the system partition. Unless you also resize the partition, which users typically even know how to do, the freed up space is still not usable.
Just nice to uni stall apps you never use and never will use

No i just disabled some of the features like the eye tracking stuff, didn't actually remove them. Runs buttery smooth for me.
i installed nova launcher and set the window animation / transition / animator duration scales to off - and now i have no lag - i usually root all my android devices with custom rom and kernel but because there are not any for this tablet - i haven't even bothered rooted it - but if you change the launcher and set the scales to off there is no lag at all - and yes disable the eye tracking etc. stuff
Not necessary but recommended, at least turn off what's not really needed.
I've rooted to add more apps to multi window which is a great feature.
I have owned 3 samsung tablets in succesion and everytime I disabled apps it has speed up the device a bit. Not that there was lag before it just felt like new after debloating.
I've actually been on a "no-root November" experiment since the Note 2014 and S4 aren't root-friendly. TBH aside from having Touchwiz I've noticed no real impact.

May i ask what your update procedure was?
Some of Samsung's default programs really do suck balls. Their stupid index service caused infinite boot reloops because it takes forever to scan large pdf's. My Magazine has also gone haywire on me many times.
This is all stuff that requires a software update but none has come. Samsung tries to make powerful bloat but the tradeoff is that you get crap like an index service that gets stuck looping and sets your CPU to 100% and bleeds your battery dry in an hour.
Thanks but no thanks. I am waiting until a few months before voiding my warranty (or hopefully not and someone finds a way around knox).
What update procedure are you asking about...I never rooted..I got three updates out of the box..

I rooted so I could have virtual buttons and more control over my tablet. I went from wanting to break the tablet in half to loving it because of rooting. No regrets.

But the speed-up effect is mostly a placebo. Also the effect on the battery will be insignificant. At least the data I check on my Note. So, I would say that this is not necessary.
And not everything Samsung put on the device is bloatware.

When someone has this expression then I already agree to remove it. But I still believe that removing the bloatware didn't make the tablet faster or the battery cycle longer.
But I am also sure that many people with bloatware many system functions they don't use and here you can most of them disable without removing anything.
So, when the question is if it is necessary to remove then my answer is still: Surely not.
PS. Its for me like the usage of all this task managers to kill processes. I mean we didn't live any longer in the 80ies and nobody will be manually better then Android in resource management. But still many Android users believe in the HOX that this fast their devices.

Run the ROM/Kernel from Overcome and you will have your speed back.

Or we could send around 4 big blokes with various tablet devices to show you the error of your ways....
Overcome is good, but I prefer CyanogenMod, completely sans TouchWiz. Both are great, and you should definitely switch to one of them. You will gain a lot of performance and battery life back, for sure.
Might be a rogue app. I run the 'Fast Reboot' to dump stuff before and after a game, seems to help. The 2.3.3 update made things far smoother too.

I'm running the old gingerbread prep rom that came packaged with the overcome rom. I had such great speed from this that I didn't even bother to move onto overcome.
Apart from the occasional stutter, everything is very smooth, particularly web browsing. This prep rom is just stock ginger with root, and it's almost perfect. All of the ginger builds are largely identical so I can't see how you could have ginger and bad lag unless you have an app bogging it down.
Have you tried a factory reset and started fresh?
Use Fast Reboot
its free on the market, it made my tab run whole lot faster than it was.
ofcourse after installing Kratos and overclocking to 1.3Ghz it runs a lot better, but i still use Fast Reboot. it simulates a restart without doing one, causing all processes to close and come back up.
very nice app.
you can buy the paid one for scheduling it to run at times when memory usage is too high
I dont like doing factory resets my uses the tab for them farm like money games and its anoying starting from scratch

If anyone is not wanting to root, but speed up your device just do what I did.
If you go into the app drawer and click the capacitive settings button, you can select the option to uninstall/disable apps. Some of the samsung and google ones are in folders within the app drawer. By disabling trip advisor, knox, news week, various Samsung apps, etc. I sped up a lot. No custom Rom or launcher needed. I actually enjoy using this thing now.
Hmm... This is probably a dumb question, but if you can disable Knox, would you be able to avoid the issues that come along with rooting?

You open the app drawer not app manager. Knox and some of the other apps are grouped in the Samsung, Galaxy Plus and Google folders.
Once you open the app drawer touch the settings button to the left of the home button. You will then see the option uninstall/disable apps, after you click that option the apps that can be disabled or uninstalled will have a red - beside them. System apps will be disabled and non-system will be uninstalled.

nope, did not made any difference (at least significantto me) chrome still lags, touchwiz is still laggish
The main killer on this tablet is the display. From a weighted perspective it is about 30% more hungry than my previous tablets including the current Air and V11. The display seems very inefficient.
Seems only having the display really dim is the only significant battery saver, IMO.
Though I prefer Android, I may return this and wait for a 32gb model of the 8.4 that just got released. I will tinker some more, but battery life is bugging me compared to what I am used to, and current tablets to compare with.

Sadly not. If it were that easy, we'd all be merrily rooting away instead of having second thoughts about our purchase.
The problem would be rooters (like me) face is that flashing a new bootloaders blows the fuse regardless of whether the Knox applications are enabled or not.

No because here are only the applications are disabled with manage the Knox container. This container is the way of Samsung to secure their Android devices so that we can use them also in a secure environment (some companies).
A part of this Knox container is the so called Knox-Flag (or -Bit) which is part of a secure-boot. And when we start to root or to flash not (by Samsung) signed firmware then this is no longer given. Therefore also the Knox applications will not run any longer and give warnings.
This is Knox and for more informations look here: Samsung Knox.
But what you means is that Samsung says that they link warranty also to this flag.
So, there are 2 issues when you root your Note. You will maybe have problems with getting warranty and the Knox container didn't work any longer.
Knox seem like one more thing to resource bloat the device with. Screw most of their customers over for the much smaller percent of enterprise customers they aspire but fail to so far get.

Yeah, it would be great if Samsung didn't burden their customers with extra apps that cost them money and that they'll never use. I saw that the Galaxy S5 comes with something like $600 worth of additional apps and service. I'm sure that the average user will use maybe $50 worth of those apps and wish that the rest could be uninstalled. I'd so much rather just save money on the initial purchase and buy the apps and services I want with the money I saved.

And how do i do that?
To reduce the impact of bloatware go to Settings > Application manager and look at the All tab. Any app you don’t want to use, you can tap on it and choose Disable. All disabled apps will be listed in a separate tab, so you can always turn them back on again in the future.
You can go further in Settings > About device by tapping the Build number seven times to turn Developer mode on. Now go to Settings > Developer options > Windows animation scale and set it to Animation is off. You can do the same thing in Settings > Developer options > Transition animation scale and Animator duration scale. Also in this page you can change the runtime from dalvik to ART.

But even wit Dalvik there are lags, most annoying while typing text and it hangs for a couple of seconds before catching up. I have the lightest most debloated ROM and still I get 1-2 sec lags, sometimes while scrolling, sometimes while typing, sometimes while loading apps.
It has done this on any ROM from day 1. I have increased Animation Speed, removed S-Voice shortcut on home button, but the lags remain. This is a Samsung disease and this pisses me off.
Now I will have to switch to CM or GE when they appear. The Smsung Software is so broken!

Like I previously said, it's TouchWiz. It will always lag.
How can anyone explain that a new 699$ phone with latest 801 chip and all still has lag while other phones like M8 don't have that much lag if any at all?
No ART or tricks will remove this lag. TouchWiz has many many bloatware. It's that simple.
Don't expect it to get any better. On the contrary, it will get worst with time... Ask SGS3 and SGS4 owners...

It might be more of putting a band-aid or a patch over a wound but for me using Nova Launcher and turning off several TW apps I did not use has helped a lot.
I don't see such a major difference in performance (in ART) compared to the Nexus 5 side-by-side after disabling unnecessary crap and using ART.
Available RAM is a whole different story, the difference is huge but the effects of that so far are not hugely noticeable in my usage patterns.
The S3 multitasking was extemely bad... S5 is much better compared to that, I had a GT-9300.
Edit: I do have the Exynos variant which has Global Task Scheduling (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big.LITTLE#Heterogeneous_multi-processing_.28global_task_scheduling.29), I can't say anything about how the Snapdragon might perform.
Hello, I have LG G3 for two months, it was an upgrade from my LG NEXUS 5. I really like the Design, camera and battery on my G3, but the performance was always poor. I did upgrade it over OTA, did a factory reset a few times, rooted to remove MacAfee. Now I even reinstalled software form a file (tutorial on forums). It is still choppy when I scroll web pages, play store is really bad. The launcher was also not smooth at all compared to my Nexus, now I am running Nova launcher it does help a little. Only essentials apps are now installed and I checked running services and remove the apps that have service, but I don't really use. Still feels like cheap dual core phone, far from Nexus 5.
tl;dr
Why does G3 lag so bad when you scroll and how can I fix that?
You can reduce lag on home screen by disabling wallpaper scrolling.
There are threads on this already where you will find what you need. You can make this thing fly very easily.

Proving you wrong is even easier than getting rid of most lag. Disable all animations, set transition scaling in dev options to zero, turn on hardware acceleration, do NOT reduce dpi as some here have advocated. No more complicated than checking a few boxes.
Unfortunately, running the stock rom, you'll never be able to compare it to the nexus 5. Once Cm11 is ready for prime time, it will be a comparable experience

New to the S7 edge myself. From what I've seen so far there's no rooting or anything unless you're on the non-US version. Knox is apparently a sort of security system that is part of the reason (maybe the whole reason?) you can't root it. Touchwiz does suck, the phone was super cluttered and really ugly compared to iOS which I've just moved from. I was thinking hard about taking the phone back after the first hour or so using it but installing Nova Launcher Prime fixed that for me. Disabling the bloat as well made it a great experience. It's a good little phone, the battery life is incredible (compared to my 6s Plus). No problem getting through 2 days before having to charge it. Zippy as well, very fast phone.

It ran fast out of the box for me, it may come down to what we have installed? I used EZ Disabler (paid version) to disable the bloatware. The only game I have is Shadow Era and it doesn't do anything in the background so I can't speak to games and background activity. The only things I have running in the background are things I'd expect (FB, Whatsapp, Telegram, email, etc.) (And I am using the American AT&T S7 edge so there's no rooting, custom ROM stuff or any of that since it's currently impossible, just stock.)
Touchwiz isn't that crappy anymore - pretty smooth actually.
And battery life is insane on the Exynos variant i can get 2-3 days of normal usage without charging (u won't get this with any SD820 phone ^^)
If you don't care about battery life that much and rather want the maximum 3D performance you would probably be better off with a SD820 phone (maybe the next nexus)

I have same device as u. AT&T edge.
I noticed in touchwiz if u go to appdrawer, u can edit and turn off bloatware. We can't uninstall without root but seems we can turn off.
Where r u going in setting to prevent apps from running in background.
I went through notifications n shut allot off.

Do u use anything to keep the phone running fast?
I installed clean master.
Always tells me apps are running. Not sure why these apps always start to run themselves in the background even after I close all apps.
Some r games n stuff not like Facebook witch I would understand as to retrieve messages.
Are u going in app manager and disabling bloatware?
I enabled developer mode and change all animations from 1.0 to .5 to try n get a faster experience.
I myself coming iPhone.

Clean Master does nothing or worse for your battery. It will clean up some files but I would suggest SD Maid for that matter.

So I have a Nexus 5, but need to upgrade. Why not, lol? I see theres some decent development here already. Any roms that are just aosp and not touchwiz tho? I didnt see any. Not a fan of touchwiz. Any major issues with this phone? Is it rootable? Any reason not to root? I see this knox term being thrown around...what the hell is that?
Just looking for some thoughts because I was also debating waiting for the next nexus device to.

Be aware that if you purchase from a US provider (including Sprint and T-Mobile) that you will not be able to root your S7. The bootloader is locked and the vulnerability hasn't been found yet.
Knox is a security app on Samsung phones that will keep secure whatever apps or data are in the Knox vault. It is for people who need higher security. Knox will not work if the phone has been rooted... even if the phone is later unrooted. Rooting trips a flag that will disable Knox and Samsung Pay.

Yeah, you can do it that way or use a debloat program which allows you to disable things that touchwiz won't.
I use an app called Greenify (the donation package). It gives you a list of all apps that run in the background (and even system services if you're brave enough to go through them all) and it lets you force them to stop running in the background and only run when you are actually using them on screen. For example say you use Snapchat. It's always running in the background whether you've opened it or not, checking for messages. Greenify can force it to not do that unless you physically open it. The only things I let run in the background are messaging apps I rely on (SMS, Whatsapp, Telegram, Inbox, etc.) and everything else - I let greenify force to hibernate.
