Hello,
I am currently using MGA stock rom, CF-Auto root and philz recovery. I wanna ask can i flash MKE using latest mobile odin and escape from the new knox bootloader stuf?
My Post is very similar to yours
i would NOT recommend trying to update to 4.3 using ODIN as you risk getting the new bootloader. open the odin file with winrar or something to ensure it doesnt have boot.img (or .bin? not sure which) before flashing
seems i have a new rom to download and slim some more.
I wanted to flash using mobile odin and MO do not flash bootloader
sounds like you might end up with the same problem as me then. where the rom will update but the modem will not be a close enough match and wont update.
i will be keeping my eyes on your developments and post if i figure anything else out at my end.
No it's not possible. Just stay away from official firmwares and flash only custom roms.
Why do you want to flash using odin? Just download the pre rooted cwm rom they are knox free.

What I'm hearing is that if you have the new firmware, MH8 for example, then you can't downgrade firmware using Odin.
I am wondering if we can upgrade? Or once we've triggered the KNOX warranty status 0x1 are we stuck on the same firmware?

It seems to suggest that you will not be able to use odin to flash stock firmware , whether upgrading or downgrading . But you could still use custom recovery or you have to remove the bootloader from the tar archive to flash using odin

Yes that's what I thought, damn.
Not that I ever use the stock firmware but I like to flash it to my device because it comes with modem and updated camera drivers.
Do you know if we install custom firmware that is based on stock ROMs that we get the camera drivers included?
hey brah! I tried downgrading from MH8 to lower version firmware UBMG5 to be exact.
and odin shows failed! now I cant use the fone. says "firmware update encountered an issue." tried flashing the same MH8 firmware again but no avail. tried using a PIT files but failed.
please visit my thread hope you could help me out. thanks!

Do you have an i337, because if you do the bootloader is not unlocked. You're going to have to flash the stock firmware in Odin

it is an i337. when i turn it on i get the unlocked lock with the samsung logo. i thought that was the bootloader.. im going totry to flash stock with odin now.
so that worked.. its booting up now. just to be certain i cannot flash custom recovery in odin on this right? and ill worry about the sim error at a later time.. already replaced the part yet i still get an error
The only working recovery for your phone now is safestrap

You're screwing up because you haven't read about the things you are trying to do. If you want to learn and do things correctly, I suggest reading the pinned threads in the general and q&a sections paying close attention to the information that is specifically about your model and firmware version. The things you are trying to do and the questions you are asking have been answered many times over in those threads.

You need to flash full nb1 to regain stock.
Once you are in nb1 you can choose to stay stock or downgrade to mk2 to root and install safestrap.
From there you can install any Tw rom not AOSP YOU CAN NOT FLASH CUSTOM ROMS.

Currently, im rooted and running a custom rom and recovery on my ATT S4 with MDL. I'd like to return to stock rooted with the option to flash custom roms in the future. I know there have been a lot of changes recently with the various versions so I would also like to update to the safest and latest firmware possible(still be able to flash custom recovery and rom if I wanted to in the future).
So... What would be the best method to go about returning to an updated stock rooted state with the ability to flash roms and recoveries in the future?
I've been searching all morning but can't find much info on working with MDL. Can anyone point me in the direction or offer any assistance?
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance :good:
Go to sammobile.com for the mdl firmware. You'll download a zip, extract the .tar.md5 file from it and flash that in Odin. After you do that the phone will want to update to the newest firmware so look for the files to delete or flash a custom rom. It'll also wrote the device so backup first

Great. Thanks a bunch but I will no longer be rooted after flashing stock through ODIN correct? Should I use CASUAL from there to regain root and a custom recovery? Also, how would I update to a newer firmware after that? One that is "safe" or least problematic?

You will lose root. CASUAL will still work and you'll still be able to use twrp or cwm. For newer firmware you're going to want to flash a custom rom based 4.4.4. You don't want to update your firmware as you won't be able to use twrp or cwm any more

Perfect. Just the info I was looking for. Thanks! :good:
After rooting my Note 3 (not branded or simlocked) many moons ago with Towelroot, I've come to the point of wanting to update things a tad. I never installed a custom recovery so it's just a root.
However, looking through the multiple threads here and not wishing to make a bad mistake I'm a little confused and could do with some clear pointers.
I am currently on 4.3 Jellybean BL: N900XXUBMJ3 so most threads deal with later versions and I really want to know what the best path is to now being able to start trying out custom roms such as the DarkWolf ROM or just get this to Lollipop. Obviously now Knox 1x0 is no longer a problem as it's out of warranty.
I assume that the step should really be to install a custom recovery and for that there is a confusion of whether I can do that directly on my current bootloader or do I have install 4.4.2 as some threads suggest?
Probably due to my misunderstanding I am not sure if a 4.4 bootloader is separate from the firmware. If it comes to having to update the bootloader do I have to completely upgrade to Kitkat or can I just update the bootloader only?

You can flash custom recovery for 4.3 but all 5.1.1 and 6.0 roms require 5.0 bootloader to make the camera to work correctly.
Flash 4.3 custom recovery. Then flash the rom of your choice. Then flash 5.0 bootloader. After that flash 4.4.2/5.0 recovery.
Or flash 5.0 firmware. Flash 4.4.2/5.0 custom recovery. Flash the rom of your choice.

Thanks for that Rosli,
I actually found that OTA was working still so I let it update. This went through a lot of updates one by one till it got to the latest 4.3. All this left root intact. Then it downloaded the kitkat but that failed. I had figured that if I let it update to Lollipop I could then root it with CF Autoroot but as it's not going any further (probably due to the fact that I'm rooted .. maybe), I will have to manually update via Odin.
I would probably in that case prefer your advice of flashing 5.0 directly then custom recovery, however, do I have to CF autoroot or can I flash recovery without root and then root after that?

Can flash custom recovery then root. But if you're going to flash custom rom no need to root after custom recovery.
