[Q] Knox, odin, root and warranty - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've updated my N9005 via OTA to the latest XXUDMJ7.
Can I flash a previous original rom like XXUBMJ3 via ODIN and then apply root de la vega?
Or this flash via ODIN will trip the knox flag to 0x1, even being an original rom from sammobile?
Now that I'm on XXUDMJ7, how can I root my N9005 without losing my warranty?

No, you cannot downgrade since you have MJ7 bootloader.

You can't ATM.

I would like to warn u about the hazards if rooting with the Note 3.
Knox invention by these south koreans is just a pain for all those rooters inc. Me.
Watch the reactivation lock, it can brick ur phone if u downloaded and installed the wrong kernel. It happened 2 me. Ive lost a brand new Note 3 because in download mode with odin i couldnt get in because it was locked !
Note 3's reset their bioses each time. It takes one heck of a good programmer to bypass this awfull but very effective manner of theirs.

Can I update from the official KitKat firmware through Odin or Kies and *not* lose an

Hi, I am a total noob in the area of updating my Note 3, so please guide me.
I want to update my Note 3 with the official firmware of Poland through Kies or Odin ( I know how to do that)
But one thing I'm afraid of and don't know is whether I will lose all my data (apps OR Phone data) if I update through Odin or not?
Just a note, I am trying to keep my Note 3 totally unrooted, untampered with in any other way. So will updating through Odin also increase my Knox number?
Thanks.
Best regards

Via ODIN will wipe your data/factory reset. -- Via KIES off the top of my head I cannot remember as it's been a while since I used it.
Official firmware will not trip your KNOX, and has been confirmed safe also/

You 100% need the new bootloader for it to work and even boot properly, and you will lose root. MOP won't work.
Anyone thinks android 4.4.2 can be falshed with mop, keeping 0x0 root and it will start withthe old bootloader?

[Q] Rooting on Vodafone UK

Hi,
Wondered if someone could please help, as I wish to root without tripping knox, as it's important I have secured work emails.
Just upgraded from Xperia Z, and got experience of rooting that in various ways, along with rooting other Android phones. However, been a while since I had a Samsung phone, but not had one with knox before.
Phone has come with the following firmware:
PDA: N9005XXUBMI7
Phone: N9005XXUBMI6
CSC: N9005VFGBMI1
I've done loads of reading on the subject, and appears that I can use Root de la Vega universal 0.5 without tripping knox with the above firmware.
Could someone please confirm what I believe that it's possible to root the above firmware without tripping root?
Assuming that it is possible, Vodafone have also issued the following firmware update, which I've downloaded to pc from SamMobile, but not yet installed:
N9005XXUDMJ6_N9005VFGDMJ1_VOD
Is there a way I can then flash this update, say with Odin, without tripping root?
Really appreciate any assistance thanks
You can root mi7 without tripping knox using urdlv, then upgrade to your latest vodafone software using mobile odin pro, keeing your root and your knox 0x0

Once rooted with URDLV, would I then upgrade with Odin Pro as per the instructions here:

Yep, this is what I've done. I had a locked vodafone uk N9005 with MI7 initially. I urdlv to root. Then mop only to MJ7.
Note if you want to flash kitkat U'll need to use MOP 4.00 to flash rom and pc odin to flash bootloader only.
I'm still knox 0x0 & have root.

Again - "without tripping Knox" - yes, but not with Odin but instead much easier with a program called Mobile Odin Pro - see the detailed thread on that here:

Many thanks for your reply dsm52!!
I'm now rooted using URDLV, ready for the next process.
Is the following file classed as MJ6 or MJ1, as it appears Vodafone UK haven't released MJ7?!
N9005XXUDMJ6_N9005VFGDMJ1_VOD
The reason I ask, is because the following thread states "UNSUCCESSFUL ROOT :MJ6 and later":

In addition, do you mind me asking which version of KK you've used, as Vodafone UK haven't released this yet?

It sounds like you want to stay with official Vodafone rom versions.
I didn't see any need to, so I flashed MJ7 BTU (UK) using MOP as the next step, which worked perfectly.
I flashed mk2 btu wheb that came out in the same way.
Fir kitkat, like most others, i flashed the Polish XEO NA6 official rom. Like I said kitkat flash is a little more tricky due to the extra bootloader flashing step. Personally, kitkat release isn't quite ready for prime time so samsung haven't rolled it out in more regions. There a few little quirks about it, e.g. genuine s view cover not working for all. I'd suggest waiting for the official BTU release before flashing by which time they may have ironed out the little bugs.
Good luck!

Actually I was unlocked within a few mins of making the call - unlock code got texted to me. And it was free - most likely because I was within my first 7 days of a new contract.
If it's not a new contract phone, then some others have reported chainfire's region lock away to work:

[Q] Does reinstalling stock firmware trip knox on Note 3?

I have a phone which has a lot of problems after the KitKat update.
Now I want to try to reinstall KitKat. Samsung doesn't provide this, so I want to use ODIN and the firmware from SamMobile.
Does anybody know if I will do this that it will trip the Knox counter?
What if you try to just reset the phone to factory settings? I wouldn't know anything about Knox though. Hope you sort it out. :fingers-crossed:

I reinstalled my firmware and I can confirm that it indeed won't trip Knox.
As it might be useful I also want to share that updating using my Mac (with VMWare for Windows) gave me a lot of troubles. After using a native Windows laptop the update went fine.
Too bad it didn't solve my problem. Going back to the store to claim my warranty.

So forgive me if I'm asking a stupid question here but I thought that if I root my Note 3 I will automatically trip the Knox counter, even before I get anywhere near flashing a new ROM - stock or custom. Is that not true then?

You won't trip Knox if you install a KK rom but will if you try to flash bak JB.
Any form of rooting will trip Knox. There used to be safe ways that didn't but with the introduction of the newer bootloaders this is no longer guaranteed...
Have you tried backing up any info you want to keep to a pc then factory resetting, I found KK was a b!tch until I reset it due to old JB data scraps causing issues...

I'm on stock 4.3 and not having any issues at the moment - other than my Note 3 not picking up the 4G signal on 3 for some infuriating reason.
So can I flash a stock KK rom without rooting then? I'm probably being thick but thought you had to be rooted to flash any kind of ROM?

You have to be rooted to flash the custom roms provided here and that will mostly be thru recovery. It will surely trip knox. To flash stock roms from sammobile you don't need root. That can be done thru odin.
Sent from my SM-N9005 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I would suggest however, if you are network locked to unlock 1st... If you need to flash a separate modem afterwards this can trip Knox as you aren't really using a "Stock rom"...
Also make sure re-activation lock is OFF.... If you go to Kitkat and you don't have a KK rom yet you are stuck with a softbricked phone until you do get the KK rom... You can't go back to JB after flashing KK rom due to a new bootloader...

Root GT-N7100<4.4.2> without tripping KNOX

Hi XDA people,
Just found this workaround for rooting latest 4.4.2 stock firmware without tripping Knox.
This method downgrades the firmware(System & Kernel) on your device to N7100XXUEMK4 except for the bootloader.
Dont even try to downgrade the bootloader as this isn't possible.
What you need:
1.Odin v3.09
2.Stock official N7100XXUFND3 firmware on your device.
3. A device with Knox Warranty Void: 0
Procedure:
1.Download N7100XXUEMK4 Stock Rom from HERE
2. Open the downloaded file. You will find 4 .tar.md5 files and an Odinv3.09 zip file inside.
3. Extract the Odin file and setup Odin on your PC.
4. Next extract the file named AP_N7100XXUEMK4_2099172_REV04_user_low_ship.tar.md5
5. Load this file into AP tab on Odin. Connect your phone in Odin mode and flash this file.
( Note : You have to flash only the AP file from Odin. Do not flash the other files namely CP, CSC, BL)
6. Now once the phone has rebooted go back to download mode and check if Knox has tripped or not.
7. Next use Saferoot from HERE to root your device.
(You would find the guide on how to root using saferoot easily over HERE
8. Now if saferoot was able to root your device then you must be rooted without tripping Knox. :good:
9. Now you can easily flash your official firmware through mobile odin. Select Everroot option on Mobile odin while flashing the new firmware. In this way you wont lose root access.
Known Issues:
If after rooting you want to flash custom recovery via mobile odin, or via DR.Ketan's utilities app please note that it will trip knox.
Knox remains cool until your recovery is stock. The moment a custom recovery is detected knox goes 1.
Credits:
@k1mu for saferoot

I did read them. They got knoxed means they got a BL with Knox warranty Void 0. And @paarkhi confirmed it to me
And I really don't think it would trigger knox that way because the bootloader doesn't check the integrity of the firmware on your device when you're flashing the bootloader itself.
Also it doesn't trigger Knox while it boots up the system and finds unauthorized firmware.
Because we don't have Kernel lock and secure boot like on Qualcomm based N3.

Okay this is all too much for my brain to absorb at this time of the night ,i don't think i actually understand the difference between Knox warranty void and being Knoxed ,i guess since we install de-knoxed ROMs we can't get Knoxed ,just that our warranty goes out the window and we cannot downgrade beyond a certain OS right? Don't worry buddy I'll help you learn Knox
Being Knoxed is getting that extra line in the download mode.
But this doesn't throw away your warranty. Warranty is lost only when this extra line in download mode ends with 1 instead of 0

But here we ain't doing that too.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am really confused as always I used to find the thread for rooting my SGS4 but with the new firmware upgrade (Russia region), I can not find how to root it, and I am not upgrading it as it is important for me. Specification I am attaching (from similar updraded phone already) .
it should be PDA: I9500XXUFNF4CSC: I9500SERFNE3 MODEM: I9500XXUFNA6 (I can only find with PDA I9500XXUFNB4 in this site).
I would certainly appreciate your guidance in this matter, as only after being sure I had the needed .tar and odin, as I always root it with ODIN being the simplest and safest way, I always upgrade via KIES.
I was directed to post here.
Thank You in advance
Just use the normal rooting.
cf auto root or towelroot.
Firmware doesn't matter.
I rooted mine with towelroot

I think I will stick to same Odin and CF-Root mode I used so much, trying not to try different things as such.
Thank you

Use towelroot if you don't want to lose your warranty (because you will void konx )

Actually I have been reading about this Knox trigger, what does it mean? Isn't there a way to "untrigger" it afterwards.
Thank you again and again very kind of you to reply

knox flag 0x1 is a e-fuse which burns out after the software is mofidied... there is no way known of setting it back to 0x0.
Here in Poland, there was a discussion about knox flag 0x1 and warrinty with Samsung officials, as the flag is also triggered when trying to downgrade your original firmware, example from 4.4.1 to 4.3.... and on tweeter Samsung Poland stated that the warranty is not lost when the flag is 0x1.. but is better to have it untouched...
Thank you for the explanatiom as such it means it does not harm the phone or prevent future upgrades? If so I prefer to root as I had done before. I have no intention of downgrading but surely would like to continue upgrading. I always use my rooted phone with Knox frozen

Actually I had rooted it before with ODIn already when it had 4.4.2 again, so it is already triggered? Is there a way to check it? Also if it does not prevent future updates I prefer to continue with ODIN

You can check by entering to download mode...
One more question and really thank u for u r time.
Will it effect Knox tripping for the future updates? Besides warranty voiding does it have any other repercussions?

It will only affect your ability to downgrade......you won't be able to with official firmware. Upgrading is still possible and the Knox flag being triggered will not affect you upgrading but will never re-set the trigger.
Thank you so much
