[Q] Device overheats and reboots after screen replacement - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi mighty community,
My device (galaxy s4 gt-i9505) was working perfectly until one day I found its display cracked inside my pocket. No idea how it happened but the phone appeared to be working as I continued to receive calls (though I was not able to pick up).
I left my phone and a local samsung dealer for repairs and today I got it back. After 10 minutes of normal use (browsing, updating some apps) the phone started auto dimming and then increasing its brightness uncontrollably. I have the auto brightness turned off and brightness manually set at max. When I went to check the brightness setting it said "max brightness reduced to prevent device overheating" or something along the line. The device then rebooted and I had no problems for another 10 minutes when the same happened again.
Could this be a faulty display? Could they have changed something else on my phone that could have screwed that? My device software seems intact as to the state I left it. Nothing is lost and no changes seem to be done.
Any opinions?

Display replacement is a fairly simple process, that is if the whole lcd+digital was replaced. If that is the case then all I can think of is that the new display for whatever reason is hotter than normal and adding the heat to the logic board causing overheat.
If just the surface glass/digitizer was replaced then this is a more complicated and risky process, involving heating to remove adhesives and slight force to remove glass from oled screen. This is more risky and taxing on the life of the phone which is why I dislike this method and prefer just a entire screen replacement. There are other problems too that make this method not ideal such as bubbles and improper application of adhesives, its just a hassle sometimes.
Anyway with that said it is possible that what was done with the repair is likely or possible to be the cause, just hard to know what exactly without having hands on.

The entire screen has been replaced + the digitalizer and everything. I have the old broken one as well so I can verify that indeed a new lcd + digitalizer has been installed. What I was able to verify as well is that the overheating is only happening when I have an sd card plugged inside. Only then my cpu goes to constantly being under 90%+ load even during idle. A quick glance at the battery drain shows that the Media process is just killing my battery. I did a fresh wipe data and I will format my sd card shortly (right after I get everything off there). Hopefully that fixes the problem.

Seems there is an issue with an app which is accessing files from your SD card. I had the same issue. I deleted unnecessary files, formatted and transferred the remaining files onto my SD card, which did the trick.

At the end formatting the sd card did the trick. Its funny because I did a full data wipe and deleted all apps and the issue was still occurring until I formatted the sd card from the phone itself. After I did that I copied back exactly the same files I had when the problem was happening but this time everything worked as expected.

Re-start Problem

Dear all,
1- I have I-mate Jam, my mobile re-start without any reason. I mean whenever I receive any call or even without touching any button, it restart. I'm afraid about it. Is it infected by any virus??
2- By mistake I add a folder name "patches" in my memory card, about 25 subfolder has been added automatically, now I can’t delete it. Is there any other solution than formatting my memory card?
3- Is there any possibility that any mobile show 165,315 (18.8 years countinuously) hours outgoing call duration?? I think it is very funny. Surly there is any problem.
Please help me....
Ali
Hi there,
1. It's very unlikely that that's caused by a virus. There's what, like only 4-5 viruses last time I checked? And they're all prototypes and pretty harmless. I'd say the problem lies with your battery contact plates. Try cleaning them with the usual contact cleaners.
Some people suggest adding a piece of paper between the battery and the base so as to improve contact, but I'm not sure how this affects the heat generated by the battery. Also, a loose battery cover may also cause periodic restarts.
2. Whats inside the subfolders? If there's a file in use inside it, then it'll probably be locked out. What file management software did you use to create the directory? I use GSFinder to browse my files, and that has never given me any problem with file management and deletion.
http://pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=1203
3. Maybe you call out more than you realize ? Not sure about this, but then again I've never tried 2.03.
Hope this helps.
Hi
1- I was assuming these solutions; someone told me that it is due to weak battery, so I replaced it. Secondly I cleaned the battery contact plates, but I am afraid why my cell battery got so hot .... I don't keep any hot material in my cell . If it is due to any virus, can you suggest any effective antivirus?
2- All the subfolders are empty. Whenever I search anything in my memory card, my PDA got stuck n I have to re-start it. Is there any software which help me in formatting my card?
3- Can I clean my call history from my PDA?
Regards
Hi,
1. So cleaning the contacts didn't help? Well, make sure that your battery cover is secure, because loose battery cover happened to me once and I experienced random restarts. There's a latch near the battery that switches the power, if I'm not mistaken, and it's pressed only when the cover is put in place. I added some dry super glue on my cover and the problem went away.
I'd guess that the battery itself wasn't a problem, as weak batteries usually result in early shutdowns at 40% power or so. Be careful with hot batteries though. Low quality batteries can brick your phone permanently. Also, Li-Polymer batteries can catch fire when overheated. Make sure you only use legitimate, official batteries. It's much safer to use originals than one of those dodgy cheap ones on eBay.
If you're still looking for an antivirus, you may wanna try Avast PDA edition:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-pda.html
This one has a free trial. But not sure about the quality though, as I've never used this on my phone. But the Home Edition on my PC works perfectly.
2. What file explorer are you using? Have you tried GSFinder, Total Commander or other freeware file explorers that are available?

Have a look at this to try format the card:

Screen setting
Hi
Thanks for your useful tips. I tried them all and I was just tired but in vain. At last I bought a set of screw driver. I opened my cell (I don't recommend anyone to do so, because you can damage your cell) I opened it and find carbon ( very slight ) on different points ( can’t explain exactly where the points were because I don't have diagram of I-mate Jam ). I removed that carbon with thinner (It was very risky)
Someone was asking about screen resent problem on this forum. My cell also had the same problem. There is a bunch of wires coming from the back of touch screen, these wires fix inside a socket. There is a black color cover that fix the wires inside that socket. During mishandling that cover got loose, that's why my cell flickered some time. I had to reset the screen touch (which irritated me a lot). I fixed that cover and now my Jam works perfect.
As I said earlier, opening this kind of sensitive sets sometime damage your cell. My mobile mike is not working properly. I don't know where problem is.
I need help.
Ps. I need I-mate Jam circuit.

SD Card & screen alignment - Hardware Problem?

Hi all,
weird one this, whenever I insert an SD card in to my slot the screen alignment goes completely out of whack. All screen presses are shifted anything from 2mm to 2cm to the left. I have tried a variety of ROMs and memory cards and always the same problem!!! Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening or how it might be cured? I was thinking it might involve cracking it open?
Has anyone else had a similar problem?
Hi,
I heard that several type of SD exist on the market, and are build of different kind chip "layers" (I don't remember the exact technical detail). Well, a lot of them are VERY SLOW and are designed to be cheap and for data storage only, and not realtime and CPU handling. So you can have a 2 GB SD with a low cost that seemed a good affair, but in reality is built of a single layer and it is very slow compared to another more expansive. The SD circuit refresh timing could influence the HTC, so that the video pressure are wrongly calculated. The point is that almost nobody write the SD layer info on the box.
- Did you try with a good brand SD ?
Regards.
Well I tried one from Moby memory that was working in my past phone fine and one from China. Turns out it was the phone in the end anyway as once I got a new Trinity everything works fine! Strange but I guess we will never know why it started being weird...
thanks for your response

[Q] Focus affected by static electricity?

I have a Sandisk 32GB MicroSDHC card in my Focus and I have a problem with it resetting itself every few days. I understand that there is an issue with instability with SD cards but I am wondering if, in some cases, it may be related to static eletricity. When it resets, it happens when the phone comes in contact with a surface such as my nightstand or the leather case I am using. It has never happened while I am holding and using the phone. It is a known problem that the touch screen does not respond properly when the phone is sitting on a surface. Last week it completely locked up with a black screen when I handed it to a coworker. I had to remove the battery to get it back. When is resets itself it comes back up with all factory settings. It doesn't prompt me to set it up like it does upon first boot. If I power cycle it, it comes back with everything intact and I have no problems until the next time it reboots. Perhaps this issue only occurs when an SD card is installed. The back case has a raised ridge that corresponds with the position of the SD card. I just put a piece of electrical tape on the inside back cover where the SD card is located. I will post again when I know if makes any difference.
Is anyone else having similar problems that look like it could be static related?
The tape made no difference. The phone reset itself again today. Sigh....
its your sd... it is not stable... theres many many scenarios that the bad sd cards cause... 3/4 of the info in the working sd list thread is good... so far not seen a 32 that is stable... still waiting for the samsung that was supposed to be released last month... a 16gb thats solid till then is the samsung...

i9505 Bootloop On Any ROM (Recovery And Download Mode Accessable)

Guys, care to help me out here? I have this i9505 in front of me. It was brought to me because it would randomly stop playing audio. I noticed that this audio issue only happens after the device wakes up from sleep. No sound at all after wake up from sleep. And Video Playback (SdCard and YouTube) stutter goes along with the problem. Here's what I did to get rid of this issue:
- Factory reset in Samsung Stock Recovery; didn't help.
- Flash stock tar.gz via Odin; didn't help. (Yes, I used the correct one matching my model)
- Flash CM to rule out issues with Samsung specific software/drivers; didn't help
So I concluded that there must be a hardware issue. Since the device looked pretty worn out and sticky, I though maybe dust or something else like a liquid could've destroyed the internals. I dissassembled it but to my surprise it looked very clean. So I reassembled it. Plot twist; now it wouldn't boot anymore. It passes the Samsung splash screen and gets into the Bootanimation. But within seconds into it, it reboots. This goes on and on and on unless I take out the battery. I know what you're thinking, but listen; I disassembled/reassembled almost 70 devices, almost half of which iPhones (Yes, I keep track of it, since I charge people for my work) and chances that I messed up something are very low. Not saying impossible, but you get the point. I exclusively change parts. Dispalys, middle frames, backcovers, batteries, microphones, cameras, microsd/sim trays, you name it*. Anyway.
Now, no matter what I do, I can't boot into the OS. Download Mode, Recovery, be it stock TWRP or CWM just work fine. When I format the internal storage via TWRP/CWM and boot up the device on stock, no folders are created on it. But when I flash a custom ROM, be it TW, CM or AOSP/A, I sometimes get into the OS and the standard Android folder structure is created. But the device is then pretty much unresponsive. I can barely navigate the OS before it shuts down again.
What could be the issue here? What could I have damaged during reassembly to cause these issues? But on the other hand, the S4 has a fairly simple architecture and I use an ESD pad, ESD wrist straps and only use plastic tools to pry off connectors. I even watch the humidity in my room for the record.
I gave this guy a replacement Nexus 5 already after he brought his S4 to me. That's what I usually do when I can't tell how long a "repair" could take. If it turns out that I caused the problem, of course he'll get to keep the device.
EDIT: I forgot. I have some spare parts for the i9505 and replaced one at a time to rule out malfunctioning hardware. So far I replaced every part except mainboard (Sim/SdCard Slot), Display and any cable connected to these two parts only to end up with the same problem.

It's clearly hardware damage. Some component on your motherboard. The audio problem is/was also hardware related. No software would cause that. My conclusion based on your info is that the motherboard already was damaged. Sound problems are usually a damaged motherboard. So the disassembly probably made it worse. Just bad luck. Maybe reheating/reflowing the audio chip will fix it. If not then buy a new motherboard and charge him that.
Yeah, was also thinking about a reflow. But it's strange that everything works. Download mode, recovery and I can mount and access every partition in TWRP/CWM. Let's see. I'm not sure if I'm gonna charge him. It sounds obvious on first sight that I caused it, sure. But I haven't given up hope yet.

Note 4 screen locking up intermittently

Hi all
[Originally posted this in the Verizon Note 4 forum accidentally, so apologies if you've seen it already]
My Note 4 screen has started locking up (i.e. continuing to work in the background and the screen is still responding to system events (SMS notifications etc) but it is not responding to touch.
I have tried several factory resets, after which the screen stays responsive for about 3 or 4 pages, then locks up again.
Background: the phone was rooted about a year ago, to get around the SD card restriction, and has worked fine up until the last week. I gave the phone to a friend who put CWM-based recovery manager and the latest Samsung Android 5.1.1 on it. After setting the phone up successfully and downloading all my apps on to it and getting everything running perfectly, I used CWM to back up the OS image onto the SD card.
Phone worked great for about a day, then started freezing. Wiping the caches / restoring / factory resets and all permutations of these have so far proved ineffective...
I took the phone in to a repair shop last night, the guy reckoned the problem was down to a poor screen replacement, and they hadn't used the correct bonding cement, and that the screen had separated from the LCD such that capacitance couldn't do its thing.
However if this were the case, the screen would not work at all, even briefly after a system reset.
The repairer is simply dismantling and rebuilding the phone to see if it's a loose/dirty connector somewhere. He's not going to try to fix it with firmware/software.
Any pointers or suggestions gratefully received
Vaughan
I was getting stutters like this, and after a month my phone started shutting down when I hit 50% or so. I replaced the battery off eBay, and that cleared the problem up. I think sine quickcharge 2.0 batteries fail faster than they should, but a Sammy battery is only $6.50 or so, so I don't mind buying one more often fir the quickcharge benefits.
Maybe try a new battery?
Samsung original screen replacements always come with AMOLED+Touchscreen.
If the guy only replaced the touchscreen you have a fake one and yeah i don't need to tell you about chinese replica's quality.
I myself work at a smartphone repair shop and we only use original products to get the best quality for our customers. It's more expensive that way i know but thats better than putting sh*t in there ands the customer needs to come back with the phone.

Thanks for that Mr Cherry..
So it's the dodgy glass doing it? It's definitely not the genuine Samsung part as it gets covered in grease as soon as you touch it.
The weird thing is, if it was the glass then I'd assume it wouldn't work at all; whereas when I do a factory reset it works for a short while then stops...
Baffling.
