[ROOT] Easy Root Method for Rogers Moto X 1058 - Moto X General

Ok so I was trying out the RockMyMoto method after I had unlocked my bootloader and found the SU binary was never getting installed. Realizing that maybe there was an easier method (since Rogers Moto X's can get bootloader unlocked from Moto site), I tried the good old fashioned Nexus way and it worked. This might have been covered before but I couldn't find it in a search.
Steps:
1 - Unlock bootloader at Moto site ( https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a/action/auth )
2 - Get the TWRP recovery from the thread and install as per the instructions there:
3 - Grab the SuperSU zip from Chainfire's site - ( http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu )
4 - Put the SuperSU zip on your SDCard/Storage
5 - Reboot into reocvery and flash SuperSU zip
6 - Reboot and install SuperSU from Play Store
- Again I want to stress that I DID search for a Rogers root thread before I made this, so if I copied or duplicated please let me know.
- To clear it up, RockMyMoto always got stuck at "Step 3" where it is supposed to push the su binary to /system/xbin, but that never happened for me as I unlocked the bootloader (bug in RockMyMoto maybe).
Hope this helps some small percentage of Moto X peeps!
Thanks to: Hashcode and TWRP for the recovery, Chainfire for the SuperSU, jcase for RockMyMoto, Motorola for an Awesome device! Any other I forgot here too.

Any moto with a unlocked boot loader can be rooted this way, but nice guide, simple with all the links.
One thing is recovery, which changes from 4.2 to 4.4

Added other link for 4.4 recovery. Thanks!

Yeah I just did this as well. Picked up the Moto X for free on a 2 year. First thing I did was unlock the bootloader.
If you can unlock the bootloader, there's no need at all to go down the rock my moto method. Good guide none the less

Step 2 - Can i get the recovery for Android 4.2.2? Do you recommend any? the links you posted are the same
Thanks!

Is it really necessary to install a custom Recovery? I only need ROOT access in order to use Google Search API that will integrate with AutoVoice, making possible for me to add new commands to Google Now, using Tasker.
I don't want roms or any of the other stuff. Can't I just unlock the bootloader and download SuperSu from Play Store?

Not possible because its necessary to install the SU binary.
BUT, it could be possible by using the following:
flashboot boot recovery recovery.img
BUT Motorola and other restricted this command. Don't know why. This command would boot into a recovery that allow you to install the ZIP SU file, and then after boot is gone forever. Just like when you put a CD with a different boot on the PC.
Since the assh**** restricited this command, all we can do it flashboot flash (so we will be flashing instead of only booting).
Tried with flashboot and mflashboot.

1 stupid question, it only works with 1058 version ?
and other thing, with this metod can i install the OTA updates? ( i have just 1 day with this phone and i don't wanna screw it up )

[GUIDE][18th Dec][4Noobs] Root BootLoader Unlocked Xperia Play

How To Root All 2011 Xperia Devices (Unlocked Boot-loader)
Just thought I would tell you how to root your Xperia Play no matter what version of android your are on.
For this guide i will be using official firmware xx.xx.xx.62 which will be flashed via wotan.
You have many ways you can do this so i will give two.
Method 1 : Using a auto-root Kernel (doomlord, KeiranFTW)
After flashing your ROM.
Depending on your ROM, download a appopiate kernel with recovery and auto root. for this i will be using Doomlord's Advanced stock kernel.
Once downloaded extract to your fastboot folder (check my other guides for a small fastboot package)
Run fastboot.exe via cmd or use the run_me.bat file
Connect your phone to your computer while switched off and while the search (may be different for other devices) key is being pressed5. When Blue LED switches on type
Code:
fastboot flash boot FILENAME.img
where the file-name is the name of the downloaded file. e.g.
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
6. type in the below command
Code:
fastboot reboot
7. your phone should reboot and you should now have superuser and SU.
Method 2 : Using a Root Zip File
After flashing your ROM.
1. Firstly download this file Bootable ClockworkMod Recovery
2. Next download this file and copy it to your sdcard of your phone.
3. Using the fastboot package downloaded from a previous tutorial run the run_me.bat file
4. Put phone in fastboot mode.
3. Type in the following command
Code:
fastboot boot recovery.img
5. Then "install zip from sd card" on the phone
6. After installation is completed press "reboot phone"
7. Your phone should reboot and have Superuser and SU.
Enjoy your rooted phone,

Man, im not gay. But i love u. the man of a perfect tutorial
Hi, tnx for the tutorial, but 3 questions :
1. Will it work for .69 (or above)?
2. You wrote "after flashing your ROM", do I have to flash ROM? And how do I do that?
3. You wrote "... from previous tutorial", which tutorial?

Good questions.
Putting a custom ROM is after rooting it right? So why would i want to flash my ROM?
I am getting Error: cannot load recovery.img. i guess this has something to do with not having flashed my rom?

[HOW-TO][DEV EDITION ONLY]Root on 4.4 KitKat

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NP9WXLIzhTY
I want to first say that I did not figure out this method on my own, I saw it on Google+ via Matthew Pierce and modified it to make it easier to follow
Second, **do not try this on a device with a locked bootloader. You need the unlocked bootloader to do this**.
You'll want to first download these 2 things
1) Superuser zip to be installed in recovery (from Chainfire) -> http://download.chainfire.eu/366/SuperSU/BETA-SuperSU-v1.72B.zip
2) New TWRP for 4.4 KitKat (from Hashcode)->
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2534850
________________________________________________________________
Here's the method to get root:
1) let the system fully install the 4.4 Kitkat ota and reboot. **Make sure you are on the first OTA before you try to install the KitKat OTA, otherwise your phone could have major issues.** After it installs, do not do anything else, let it boot into android.
1b) Take the SuperSU installable zip and place it onto the internal storage
2) reboot phone to bootloader.
3) install Hashcode's TWRP using mfastboot flash recovery twrp-2.6.3.1-ghost-4.4.img. (**use the motorola fastboot binary**)
4) reboot device to recovery, do not boot into android before this step!
5) go to install and find then select BETA-SuperSU-v1.72B.zip
6) Boot back into android, and if needed, go to the Play Store and install SuperSU from Chainfire
7) enjoy root!
What is the advantage/difference in installing the SuperSU app you linked, in favor of the one included with the TWRP 4.4 recovery?

Probably nothing. The only reason I mentioned the one in the play store, is because TWRP never actually asked me to root in the first place. I thought it was strange, but I didn't really think much of it

That's odd, I used the TWRP version in Hashcodes thread, flashed with the Motorola Fastboot. When I went to restart from TWRP it asked me if I wanted to root and I let it. Now I'm rooted.

Stranger things have happened, I guess. Regardless of which method you use, you'll end up with root either way
This doesn't seem to be working for me. I accidentally rebooted into Android (hit the power button) then tried the whole thing from scratch.
I get an image of andy with "no command" when I boot into recovery.
Edit: Seems like a low battery issue. Will try again after charging.

same here but i have 85% battery
so i guess we will have to re-flash and push the supersu
The only advice I can give to either of you is to try reflashing TWRP again
Actually i did it again and it worked, guess we can't just skip steps.

How do I return my phone to default in order to install OTA
I have already flashed the stock recovery but my phone is still rooted. Do I need to unroot? I tried installing the OTA and it said it failed.
This method should work on any version with with an unlocked bootloader such as Sprint and T-Mobile - not just the dev editions.

Anyone knows how to do UNROOT if I used this method to get root?
I get a preflash validation failed because the file size is over the limit, but I've checked the file size is actually smaller than the limit.
Has anyone experience this?

I used the mac mfastboot to flash twrp and then select recovery. After that it just boots to android telling me I have an unlocked bootloader. Help?

Are you selecting recovery with the power button or the volume up button? Volume up selects. If you use the power button, the phone just boots normally.

Ha. Classic.
I wasn't aware that this was the case with unlocked bootloaders. I just came from my S3 where an unlock method was readily available when I purchased the phone. In either case, I think this information is useful for noobs (such as myself) if unlocking the bootloader is an option (like myself).
Also, I hope you're having luck with the new root method for non-dev variants, jcase.

Agree.
Usually flash using the fastboot command in the SDK-platform-tools.
Comments suggest that that will not work and I need mfastboot, motorola binary. Unfamiliar with that one.
Appreciate a constructive comment. We all have to start somewhere.
Thanks.

[root] [recovery] moto g [working]

Hello Moto G Users
i recently rooted my MOTO G after 4 hours of hard work..actually it was easy..but i got very confused with different types of threads and methods..like modaco...i was unable to choose which method to use ?..should i downgrade to 4.3 bootloader or not ?
So i thought to make a new thread..And i tried to make it simple for new users.....so here it is
How to Root Moto G
There are are three simple steps only
1. UNLOCK BOOTLOADER
2. FLASH CUSTOM RECOVERY [I USED CWM]
3. FLASH SUPERSU
DONE
Yeah ...you don't need to downgrade your bootloader which is very risky
Procedure
1. UNLOCKING BOOTLOADER :- i thinks its already explained well at different sites and motorola's site also [ i used this guide Moto-g-unlock-bootloader-and-root only for unlocking]
2. FLASHING RECOVERY-
You need 3 things
(a) motorola usb drivers [download from here ]
(b) adb drivers (download from here ]
(c) Custom recovery (download from here ] i used cwm without touch OR USE PHILZ RECOVERY (4.4.4) CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD
Real procedure:-
1. install motorola usb drivers
2. extract adb drivers anywhere in your computer
3. copy recovery.img [i renamed it to only recovery] into adb tools folder
4. boot your phone into fastboot mode by pressing volume down key and pressing power key simultaneously , and then releasing power key .
5. connect your moto g to your computer through data cable
6. go into adb tools folder => while pressing shift key => right click => and click open cmd here !
7. type [fastboot flash recovery recovery.img] and press enter { IGNORE Mismatched partition size' AFTER FLASHING RECOVERY }
DONE just press volume down and then volume up to boot into cwm
3. FLASHING SUPER SU
1. DOWNLOAD THIS FILE FROM HERE
2. PUT IT IN INTERNAL MEMORY
PROCEDURE => IN CWM =>INSTALL FROM SD CARD => CHOOSE SUPER SU => RESTART
It will ask 'root is broken' WHEN REBOOTING FROM CWM. CHOOSE YES
DONE !
I recommend these apps you should install first after rooting
1. Greenify (getting awesome battery backup )
2. xposed installer
3. gravitybox
4. tinted status bar (i love this module..make your android like ios7)
5. Titanium Backup
I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYTHING !
reserved !
if needed

You rooted or yet to root...?
If not
Flash again recovery in boot loader
Enter CWM after flash
Install su
It will ask root is broken select yes.
Recovery should work now
Edit: look at this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=51030709&postcount=181

[ROOT] CWM Test 8/Flashable SuperSU

As discovered in the Q&A post found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-2014/help/root-t2886674/page2
Just like the first Moto X, users have been having success rooting by unlocking the bootloader and just flashing SuperSU with CWM. This is a test release so it may be wise just just boot to CWM to flash SuperSU instead of flash it. Use caution as always.
Bootloader Unlock Guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-2014/general/guide-unlock-bootloader-moto-x-2014-t2876773
CWM Test 8: http://d-h.st/XJr
SuperSU flashable ZIP: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053
I can report that this did work for me and I have achieved root.
Steps I took:
1. Unlock bootloader using Motorola's website
2. boot to bootloader, flash or boot to recovery with fastboot command (fastboot flash recovery cwm.img/fastboot boot cwm.img) *There really isn't a reason to flash this. It is very broken. Consider keeping your original recovery!*
3. boot to cwm and flash superSU zip
4. CWM will prompt to fix root, choose YES
5. Rooted!
Almost everything besides flashing a zip is broken in this CWM release, don't expect to be able to backup with it.

I appreciate you posting this, could you by any chance post a little bit more detail on how to do the flash? Is it as simple as extracting the recovery image and flashing from ADB? How do you then flash SuperSU?

I added some basic steps to original post, use caution as this isn't the most secure way to root but it will do for now. If you need further help, you should probably wait for a safer method.

What are the gaps in security? When you say secure, do you mean safe as in not bricking the phone or security as in data is at risk, etc.?

the steps you listed are pretty much it. can't get any easier than that. exactly how it was on the previous MotoX. unlock bootloader, fastboot flash recovery .img. then just reboot to recovery and flash SuperSU zip. very straight forward.
edit: also, fix permissions shouldn't be required...

It was just mentioned in the original post, I guess it doesn't matter. And by not secure I mean that the CWM is a test release so I don't know what could go wrong.

yeah i'm still awaiting a device so i'm not 100% sure on the persmissions. the zip should do all the work for the user, though, via the update-binary.
btw thanks for posting.
Thanks for posting this, I suggested the guys in Q&A to do that. If anybody needs help, I made the process successfully back on Q&A (when they were testing the recovery)
If anyone notices the permissions making a difference let me know, I'm curious as to why everyone was saying it had to be done..
"cannot load 'recovery': Permission denied" when trying "fastboot boot recovery cmw.img"
My bootloader is unlocked.

I apologize, I did not realize if you are just booting, you don't need the "recovery" part of that command. Glad it worked for you!
You mention that this version of CWM is limited to basically sideband loading and won't do backup. Do you happen to know where I can find a copy of CWM for the X 2014 that gives me shell access? I've already unlocked and rooted my phone, but busted my screen and want to back things up. I went to their rom manager page and can't find either version of the X. Would either a 6.0.5.1 or one of the Nexus ones work?
