As discovered in the Q&A post found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-2014/help/root-t2886674/page2
Just like the first Moto X, users have been having success rooting by unlocking the bootloader and just flashing SuperSU with CWM. This is a test release so it may be wise just just boot to CWM to flash SuperSU instead of flash it. Use caution as always.

CWM Test 8: http://d-h.st/XJr
SuperSU flashable ZIP: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053
I can report that this did work for me and I have achieved root.
Steps I took:
1. Unlock bootloader using Motorola's website
2. boot to bootloader, flash or boot to recovery with fastboot command (fastboot flash recovery cwm.img/fastboot boot cwm.img) *There really isn't a reason to flash this. It is very broken. Consider keeping your original recovery!*
3. boot to cwm and flash superSU zip
4. CWM will prompt to fix root, choose YES
5. Rooted!
Almost everything besides flashing a zip is broken in this CWM release, don't expect to be able to backup with it.

I appreciate you posting this, could you by any chance post a little bit more detail on how to do the flash? Is it as simple as extracting the recovery image and flashing from ADB? How do you then flash SuperSU?

I added some basic steps to original post, use caution as this isn't the most secure way to root but it will do for now. If you need further help, you should probably wait for a safer method.

What are the gaps in security? When you say secure, do you mean safe as in not bricking the phone or security as in data is at risk, etc.?

the steps you listed are pretty much it. can't get any easier than that. exactly how it was on the previous MotoX. unlock bootloader, fastboot flash recovery .img. then just reboot to recovery and flash SuperSU zip. very straight forward.
edit: also, fix permissions shouldn't be required...

It was just mentioned in the original post, I guess it doesn't matter. And by not secure I mean that the CWM is a test release so I don't know what could go wrong.

yeah i'm still awaiting a device so i'm not 100% sure on the persmissions. the zip should do all the work for the user, though, via the update-binary.
btw thanks for posting.
Thanks for posting this, I suggested the guys in Q&A to do that. If anybody needs help, I made the process successfully back on Q&A (when they were testing the recovery)
If anyone notices the permissions making a difference let me know, I'm curious as to why everyone was saying it had to be done..

I apologize, I did not realize if you are just booting, you don't need the "recovery" part of that command. Glad it worked for you!
You mention that this version of CWM is limited to basically sideband loading and won't do backup. Do you happen to know where I can find a copy of CWM for the X 2014 that gives me shell access? I've already unlocked and rooted my phone, but busted my screen and want to back things up. I went to their rom manager page and can't find either version of the X. Would either a 6.0.5.1 or one of the Nexus ones work?

How To Root All 2011 Xperia Devices (Unlocked Boot-loader)
Just thought I would tell you how to root your Xperia Play no matter what version of android your are on.
For this guide i will be using official firmware xx.xx.xx.62 which will be flashed via wotan.
You have many ways you can do this so i will give two.
Method 1 : Using a auto-root Kernel (doomlord, KeiranFTW)
After flashing your ROM.
Depending on your ROM, download a appopiate kernel with recovery and auto root. for this i will be using Doomlord's Advanced stock kernel.
Once downloaded extract to your fastboot folder (check my other guides for a small fastboot package)
Run fastboot.exe via cmd or use the run_me.bat file
Connect your phone to your computer while switched off and while the search (may be different for other devices) key is being pressed5. When Blue LED switches on type
Code:
fastboot flash boot FILENAME.img
where the file-name is the name of the downloaded file. e.g.
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
6. type in the below command
Code:
fastboot reboot
7. your phone should reboot and you should now have superuser and SU.
Method 2 : Using a Root Zip File
After flashing your ROM.
1. Firstly download this file Bootable ClockworkMod Recovery
2. Next download this file and copy it to your sdcard of your phone.
3. Using the fastboot package downloaded from a previous tutorial run the run_me.bat file
4. Put phone in fastboot mode.
3. Type in the following command
Code:
fastboot boot recovery.img
5. Then "install zip from sd card" on the phone
6. After installation is completed press "reboot phone"
7. Your phone should reboot and have Superuser and SU.
Enjoy your rooted phone,

Man, im not gay. But i love u. the man of a perfect tutorial
Hi, tnx for the tutorial, but 3 questions :
1. Will it work for .69 (or above)?
2. You wrote "after flashing your ROM", do I have to flash ROM? And how do I do that?
3. You wrote "... from previous tutorial", which tutorial?

Good questions.
Putting a custom ROM is after rooting it right? So why would i want to flash my ROM?
I am getting Error: cannot load recovery.img. i guess this has something to do with not having flashed my rom?

Hi, I am new to the nexus 4 and to android in general, And I just rooted my phone using one of the toolkits(don't remember the name and I am not in home to check). I wasn't sure I am rooted so I downloaded an app called "Root checker" and it says I'm not rooted. Is it 100% I'm not rooted or is there a more reliable way to check if I'm rooted? And if I'm not, any idea why it didn't work? I got the drivers properly and unlocked the phone.
Thx!

Unlocking the bootloader does not root the phone. Follow the instructions at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2266654 to complete the process of gaining root access and installing a custom recovery on your Nexus.
This is exactly why you shouldnt use a toolkit. You have no idea what you have done to the phone, whereas if you did it manually/properly you would've known what you actually did. Did you flash a custom recovery? Did you flash the supersu zip through the recovery?
download a terminal emulator app. open it, type su(press enter), if it gives you a # sign then youre rooted, if not then youre not rooted. that app you used doesnt work. and yes, just unlocking the phone does not give you root.
I didn't mean I only unlocked the phone, I meant that after I unlocked it, I rooted. Anyways, I downloaded the emulator, typed sh in the emulator and it didn't show me the # so I guess I'm not rooted. I'll try doing it manually, thx!

yup, no root. if you installed a custom recovery, all you have to do is download the latest supersu or superuser binaries, then flash it via your recovery.
Is it really that hard to open a command prompt and type "fastboot oem unlock" and then type "fastboot flash recovery desiredrecovery.img" and flash the supersu.zip through recovery...
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I am pretty much new to android so I didnt really understand most of the things u said. I'll try to learn more about those things but if you could explain more about what u wrote it would be really nice.
Oh and I just got home and checked what toolkit I used, and it is WugFresh toolkit, and below the ROOT button I ticked the "also flash custom recovery" so now I just need to download the superuser binaries and then flash it throguh the recovery?

i agree.
the issue is that these root toolkits are so pushed around here(even posted in the original development section, wtf???) that people think that root toolkits are easier. they difference being that you have to read a little if you never rooted the right way(and you also have to figure out the toolkit). but once you know how to do it the right way, it literary takes 3-4 minutes to root the phone.

if it flashed a recovery for you, then yes. it might of just booted a recovery for you too for a 1 time use, if so then youll have to flash your recovery again later.

I remember that when I rooted through the toolkit it said that it will flash the recovery temporarily, so I guess it was just for the root proccess and I do need to flash it again. Oh and by command prompt you guys mean the cmd in the computer or there is a command prompt in the phone somewhere?
And another question; I want to do the whole thing of unlocking bootloader, flashing a custom recovery and rooting again, but now doing it without the toolkit, will it do something If I already unlocked the bootloader but now I Do it again? or If I will flash a custom recovery twice?

no, since youre unlocked. if you wanted to, you can always flash the factory img via fastboot and do everything over again. nevertheless, use fastboot to flash the recovery permanently. yes, command prompt in the desktop(adb or fastboot). but really, once you learn how, your next nexus will be rooted in just a few minutes, since its the same process for every nexus. unlock the bootloader(fast oem unlock, fastboot flash a custom recovery, flash either a custom rom or the su binaries, then reboot. thats all)

generally, stock roms are odexed. most other roms will be deodexed. people deodex them because it makes the rom themeable. heres an old link, but it explains http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/what-is-odex-and-deodex-in-android-complete-guide/

We are lucky to recieve devices with an unlocked bootloader without having void warranty etc, either void warranty and get custom optimizrd stuff or not void warranty and stay on stock, sorry bud cant help much
Could you please update the OP for android 4.4?
I also received here in India. I was on stock, unrooted device. I have captured the OTA. The file name is tegra_note_7_system_update_3.0__5.1.zip and is 446 mb.
I'm new so please forgive me and my ignorance through all of this. I had a great root experience with my old LG G3, so when I got my Axon 7 (A2017U) I thought I'd try to root it too. I tried to follow DrakenFX's guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/development/wip-axon-7-root-bootloader-unlokced-t3441204) but I bit off more than I could chew. I got to the point where I had TWRP up, but this is where I think things started to fall apart. I was confused by the instructions and in a haste I continued anyway. In TWRP I went to Wipe>Format Data typed in yes like TWRP said and boom, I had no idea what happened. Rebooting only got a screen that said "Type in your password" but my passcode I had on the phone before it bricked didn't work. So by now I start panicking a bit. I thought I made a mistake earlier so I went back and tried to reinstall TWRP by putting the phone into EDL. The phone got stuck that way for a while, but I now I have it in TWRP. Right now, I just want to get back to safe stock android.
I'm 200% sure I messed with something I wasn't supposed to and I believe that is the system image(?)which Draken also linked (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=68248798&postcount=53). I'm downloading it as I type. I'm going to do my best to leave my phone just like it is right now, in TWRP, and wait for more advice on this before I do anything else.. What I'm curious about is where did I go wrong and what do I need to do to get my phone working again, preferably without returning it? Thank you for any advice you have to offer.
Update: It's worth noting I didn't know to enable OEM Unlocking when I was in stock android. Dumb move I know. I'm new here.

I've done the wipes multiple times. It's mostly the downloads I'm having trouble with. How and where do you get them? The links I found were dead or had a slow speed.

Did you save the recovery backup? If you did then use the axon7root.exe to flash the stock recovery. Then download the stock B20 from ZTE.

I've been able to find some recovery images that I found on other threads. The thing is, when I try to flash them on TWRP, I get an error about "/dev/block/sde14" being read-only.

no no no no ..................... put phone in EDL mode. Copy the stock image into the folder with the axon7root.exe file you used to flash TWRP. Make sure the stock file is named recovery.img (or whatever the TWRP file is named in that folder, it has been a long time since I did this). Then use the axon7root.exe program the exact same way you did before. It will flash the stock recovery. Then in stock recovery you can flash the B20 from ZTE

Ok, I will try this.
Update: I got the stock recovery back, but now I'm lost as to how to flash the stock b20 from zte. Thank you for all your help so far though.

Yes, I'm in the process of getting the update from sdcard feature working.
Update: Trying to use the update.zip file or unpacking it into the sdcard hasn't worked. Trying to use adb sideload returns "Cannot read 'update.zip'"

ok - download it from zte. Put it on your SD card. In recovery select update from SD card. Be warned it will work but it is slow. Also note that while I will not say the bootloader unlock doesn't work on B29, I can say it worked flawlessly on B20. If you want unlocked I recommend doing so on B20.

I tried that. It won't accept the zip file and it's unclear which file to sideload. Would you happen to know? This is what files are in the unpacked zip. https://gyazo.com/c7546c3ed0dcb0972653eaeba42fcb40

Maybe - I'd have to download it to find out. If you can't get stock recovery to take it this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=69434328&postcount=17 gives you instructions on what lines to remove from the updater-script to make it flash in TWRP (I didn't have a problem making the stock B20 go in stock recovery, but I was unlocked at the time). You could reflash TWRP and try that.
Or just try this in TWRP http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=68873482&postcount=2

I'm going to try the first option. The second option's link take horrendously long to download.
Update: Trying to flash from TWRP results in error "Could not find 'META-INF/com/google/android/update-binary' which makes no sense since update binary is exactly where it should be.
Further Update: It seems that the problem might have been that when I compressed "update.zip" to fix "updater-script" it changed to file path by adding the title of the folder "update" to the beginning. I think that messed with the path giving the the meta-inf error.

Just suck it up and download the 2 b29 files. If it is that slow pick a different mirror
Hi all
Ok so, I am updated to Nougat (EU) with no modifications besides an unlocked bootloader.
Since the last fastboot firmware file currently available to us is the September 2016 security patch, I'm a little hesitant to root right now. I want to be sure I'm be able to take new OTAs (if we ever get more). But I'm not sure if the September build will work now after updating to Nougat.
So what can we do in the meantime. Well that's where I may need guidance, but I think I have the idea down, so might still be useful information.
Ok, so to root, I first need to install TWRP - a custom recovery. But to accept OTAs I need to keep the stock recovery.img (which is overwritten by TWRP). Then I'd flash Magisk for root - and Magisk will modify the boot.img, so i need to keep the stock boot image (all of which we'd have if we had the actual fastboot files).
Anyways, I think it's quite easy. The only tricky part for me is the recovery. How do I get a backup of the stock one? Does TWRP make a backup during install ("fastboot flash recovery TWRP.img")? If so, where is this backup? I know I can back up the boot.img with TWRP before flashing Magisk (I believe Magisk makes a backup anyways, so if you use the Magisk uninstaller, the stock boot will be restored). But the recovery... If these two stock images can be backed up then it's easy to restore them to accept an OTA. Or is it not that simple? Can you actually flash the stock recovery from within TWRP (thereby overwriting itself)?
1. Unlock bootloader.
2. Boot only twrp 3.1.+ with:
fastboot boot NameOfTwrp.img
2a. Create your own full backup(recovery, boot, system, efs, opt. data).
3. Flash twrp for stable:
fastboot flash recovery NameOfTwrp.img
Boot into twrp from BL menu without rebooting system.
4. Magisk, read here, post #4
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-style/general/guide-flashing-stock-firmware-t3637235
Newest version is 13.3, you need twrp for magisk updates or modules.

Awesome thanks, I'll try that when I get home tonight.
And one can just restore stock recovery when needed from within TWRP?
One must really prepare well for OTAs these days without the actual fastboot files readily available.

All canbe restored with twrp.
Only modified logo.bin you have to flash with fastboot. It is in "stock ota nougat reteu" thread.

I've just booted TWRP and backed up all partitions...but I don't see recovery.
All that is available is: Boot, System, Data, Cache, and EFS.
It seems silly, but I know the official TWRP app from the play store has a backup recovery option but it needs root...
So my thinking is: boot into TWRP (don't flash it) then root the device with magisk. Use the TWRP app to backup recovery .............. and you just replied with my same thinking...
HAHA, I just unistalled flashfire today. I'll install it again.

Hmm...
I thought twrp 3.1.1 can backup stock recovery.
Don't flash twrp.
Boot twrp, root with magisk(same way), reboot phone.
Install flashfire app(play store) and do backup of stock recovery(option - for fastboot).
Flashfire: , backup, ..., it will reboot the phone and do backup. After it you can flash twrp with fastboot.
awesome man, I was just editing my post when the email that you replied came through
I think I'll do this tomorrow night now! I'll update if it's successful.
Thanks for assisting me to get this done!
Ok, well I decided to get it over with.
Backed up the recovery with TWRP app and just made a fastboot backup of recovery with flashfire now..
Actually, if you never flash TWRP then it would just be a matter of restoring the boot.img - but of course, then you always need to be at a PC.
Last thing, can I use the No Unlocked Bootloader warning logo and it won't break anything (like later OTAs)?

I don't know(about ota).
Original Logo bin - flashfire can backup it(normal or full section).
All done! Now hopefully prepared for whenever the time comes!
Thank you so much for helping me out on this little journey
You're welcome.
I hope it will be useful to others. Everyone should do so.
