Hi i have just rooted the device downloaded a CM7.2 rom now im wanting to install it, I have only found a CWM 5.0.2.8 recovery that once flashed is not permanent on the device? i cant use it to wipe data nor wipe cache and mount system, What recovery do i need?
please first clear your problem do you need a permanent custom recovery ? if yes then flash a custom kernel.....or if you want to use your downloaded CWM file ....then place it in root of youe sd card (not in any folder ) and boot into recovery mode by powering of device then press and hold (volume up button + home button+ power bhtton) you will boot into recovery mode ...use volume buttons to navigates and select apply update from.sd card...the. select CWM file and flash it....then CWM recovery will be opend....now do whatever you want press thank if i helped you

trying to install custom ROM
Hi I'm trying to install this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1913349
(Yes, it is Galaxy Y Pro Duos, but it doesn't have its own section on xda, therefore posting here)
When I'm in the temporary loaded CWM and trying to install the Kernel it seems fine. The operation takes seconds and finishes with DONE!
But after I reboot the OS looks untouched also when I go into Settings it says Android 2.36 ...
Any ideas?

its a kernel not a rom so nothing will look like its changed
make sure you mount system before you flash
look in about phone in settings - it will tell you what current kernel you are using
you can use apps like cpu spy which will give you kernel info and no frills cpu to change freq governor and i/o
and yes it will always say android 2.3.6 when flashing a kernel as you have not changed the android version
and there is only 2.3.6 gingerbread available for galaxy y (stock based) or 2.3.7 (cm7 based)
kernel 2.6.35.7

Thanks,
In settings it says Kernel:

The phone is rooted, but never unlocked the bootloader, actually never found a way to do it on this phone. This cell has no fastboot so using SDK tools is not a way...

you dont unlock the bootloader like you do a htc phone
it has a file in the zip which does it each time you flash kernel
make sure you mount system in cwm before you flash the zip!

New kernel on board:
2.6.35.7

This has allowed my mount2sd see the SWAP and Ext4 (it didn't work on the old kernel).
Solved!

the problem was solved and had nothing to do with having a perminant cwm
also you dont need cm7 to have a perminant cwm as its kernel related - you just need a kernel that has it built in - for example hells fusion #50
also he was using duos not gt-5360

It appears you dont have CWM installed, Get CWM and put it on sd card, Then boot into recovery and select ''apply sdcard update zip''
Or you can just flash a SAFE kernel in ODIN, Something like speedmod
CWM - http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1056408&d=1336826886
Speedmod Kernel (ODIN) - https://dl.dropbox.com/u/69014495/speedmod-kernel-n7000-ics-k3-3-Odin.tar
PLEASE AVOID DOING A FULL WIPE UNLESS YOU KNOW YOU ARE ON A SAFE KERNEL - SPEEDMOD IS SAFE, SO IS ABYSS !!!

ok its making progress, ive doen so far
- download Abyss Kernel 4.2 from here: http://www.mediafire.com/?c65mndvpk6ocbaa
- put zip-file on your USB-storage
- boot in Recovery
- Flash Abyss Kernel 4.2!!!
- boot back in Recovery (find it under 'advanced') ok i selected restart recovery the top option and now it just has a numbers going up and up ie its not at 1419 and its increasing as i type.. what is this ? ok i took out battery and this time i flashed abyss and rebooted phone not via the option in advanced menu and now rebooted back to cwm and about to flash rom to see if it worked... i dint do any wiping
- now FullWipe!!!
- Flash ROM
- reboot system
-...you are done
Its difficult to understand what you are trying to say.
You have CWM installed now yes ?
And you successfully flashed Abyss kernel in CWM ?
If so, When you reboot into recovery, You should see RedPill Touch Recovery (same as CWM but red) ?? If you DO NOT see this, DO NOT WIPE.
If you do see it, Then Job done, Flash away, Its safe to wipe on that kernel, But Im new and would avoid it whether it is safe or not.
Only wipe if you HAVE TO !
hi all im all sorted now, i just wasent understanding it all but a very kind person helped me though it and im now clued up and understand all what was needed
thankyou all
I'm having a hell of a time trying to get any custom roms working. at best i can get cm 10 working if i install cm7 through CWM first. other than that i havent been able to successfully get a working rom.
i first get 2ndinit installed. then i delete all cache, data and delvik. then install the custom android from zip along with custom gapps, but after i restart from there my screen goes black with a red light and i have to flash my sbf just to get my phone working again.
am i missing something? whats this kernel i keep seeing around the forums? I could never find a solid post discussing them.
i guess overall what im asking is, is all i need on my phone the 2ndinit, new android rom, and gapps?
and if thats all i need. then what am i doing wrong?
thank you!
also i have a Defy red lense. heres the "about phone" before i did any rooting or anything at all

Is this rom for stock?
What is OTA updates for?
How to install the ROM? Anyone can teach?
Thanks You
To answer your questions
It replaces stock rom - you overwrite stock rom with a custom rom
OTA - over the air - updates system apps & may contain bug fixes
How to install
Enter cwm (if you don't know what this is there are plenty of guides search)
Wipe data & system
Mount system
Install zip from sd card
Select zip
Restart
This is the process for any flashable zip file except with updates you don't wipe data or system
You need to root your phone before you Flash a custom rom - again there are plenty of guides for rooting

go into cwm

2.Hells-fusion - loop at splash
3.Savie - stuck at splash
Any help would be really appreciated.

Most likely you failed to mount system before flashing the zip or your baseband needs updating
Make sure you goto mounts & storage in cwm and mount system before flashing any zip (will display "unmount system" if it is mounted)

Yeah I did mount everything in CWM, it's probably the baseband thing. I have the latest firmware file for my region (Baltic States). Will it work?
Here is the version of it:

Anyways, gonna make a nandroid backup and try to flash the whole stock firmware.

Yes that's the latest firmware
The only other thing I can think of is that you are using the wrong cwm
Here is my one - Flash it in stock recovery then mount system & flash zip

Also there are different versions of savie - make sure you are using the stock one if on stock rom and not the cm one
I would use hells fusion #50 myself for testing
