HTC D2 Android upgrade -or-Save me from brain damaged brother - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Hey Guys,
I'm home for the holidays and my brain damaged brother decided it would be a good idea to see if my cell phone was water proof and accidentally dropped it in my parents pool. He said he will buy a replacement as soon as he earns enough money, but based on his current spending habits, which is primarily focused on beer and girls with room temperature I.Q's, I'm not going to hold my breath.
To make a long story short, he gave me an old phone of his to use until such time as he wins the lottery, or Jesus comes. It's an HTC D2 with the ungodly Windows 6.5 I believe. It looks like it will work for awhile, but I'd rather not use Windows. My brother came out of his drunken stupor long enough to direct me to this website, and told me to ask about upgrading the phone to Android. Due to his beer clouded vision and limited language skills, it seems he is unable to do this himself.
Is there an easy way to upgrade this phone to Android? I read through quite a few of the posts here, but found so many confusing options and variations I don't know what to do. I know most of you guys can build a nuclear reactor with a paper clip and chewing gum, but are there any instructions that even a Psych major can follow? I'm not stupid, but I'm not and engineer either. I'm going back to college soon, so I would like something stable that I don't constantly have to fiddle with.
I found something that shows how to install Android "Ice Cream Sandwich". The video is a bit dated, so I don't know if it's the easiest way. I want something simple to use. Is "Ice Cream Sandwich" recent enough for me to use my favorite apps? Is it stable? Is this even the best way to do it? It seems a bit difficult to follow and I don't know if I can even do it. The website here won't let me post the link, so I doctored it up a bit.

Sorry for the long post, and especially if I put anyone off with all "my brother" rants, but he just dropped my phone in the pool about 2 hours ago and I really needed it while I'm home. I tried finding help somewhere else at first, but received a message from a guy, who makes my brother look like a genius, saying he'd help me if I sent him a naked picture of myself. Uh, thanks, but no thanks.
I only have about a week left to stay here, so if I don't get the phone working by the time I leave I guess I can use the Windows phone. Any help or insights would be welcome.
Thanks!

Too. Many. Details ..... But I guess it is worth it against who might flame you for not "searching" and "trying stuff on your own"
For people who just want to know the question, it's highlighted in red.
To be honest, you WILL have to do some reading before installing Android on that device. Depending on whether you want to keep WinMo or not and on what matters the most to you.
But as to not confuse you, I'm going to assume you want Android on NAND using MAGLDR bootloader.
Follow this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044830 which should guide you through the whole process.
I can also assume that ICS should be fine for you, but if it doesn't suit you, feel free to try others. But ICS should be recent enough for most apps.
Follow that thread, and if you get stuck you may come back here and tell us where you got stuck and why and we will try to help.

Thanks for the reply, I did extensive searches and was overwhelmed by the hundreds of different options and opinions. I will just try and sort the easiest option I can to get his phone working like my old one.
Thank you again!

The way you describe your brother is epic. You're really cute.
Anyway, from second post is all you need... It actually helped me too. I'm looking for a guide like this after few hours of searching.

New HTC T-Mobile Wing & User

Hello everyone,
yes i am a new user and subscriber. i purchased the wing about a month ago and so far i like it, but there are some things that i need to address. first, there is a memory problem that from what i have read, is common. i have a 2Gig microSD and most of my videos are on there. i am using TCMP to play movies. i was wondering what to use to get the best speed and usability out of my wing. what is safe to delete to make this thing race. again, i am just getting into the terminology (kitchens, cookbooks etc.), so please bear with me. a quicky, how do i get to the registry? and does the iphone theme really work good for this phone?
thanks everyone for any help

I suggest a custom rom. The T-mobile stock rom is not very good. I'm currently using Open Touch 4.0 by TTRAN and im loving it!
I'm a new Wing user also. I've had mine for a few days and i'm absolutely clueless when it comes to the rom's and making your phone look completely different. I read a little, but to someone who doesn't know all that lingo.. it's like a foreign language somewhat.. lol. Not that bad, but you know what I mean. I'm sure i'll figure it out eventually, but as of now? I'm clueless. I was told I need to HARD SPL my phone or something and I have no idea what that means or how to do it, lol. I downloaded a few things and got them to work though. But like I said, that's it.
Follow instructions. I understand people don't want to potentially "break" their phone ... but this stuff is TOO easy. Don't be scared of it.

Yeah. Well I was gonna ask you for some help (you seem to like helping people and you seem to know what you're talking about), but I can imagine how many people do that. I know how it is to be asked how to do stuff when it's very easy to begin with. I've been an admin on online games and stuff, so that part I understand. There just seems to be so many things you can do to this phone and to most people, they probably have no idea where to begin.
I was able to download a few cab's and get them to work, which was cool. I have my Wing overclocked right now at 247 I believe. Then I have a few other nice things. I use the Palringo for AIM and that's nice. I can't wait to change the overall look though. I'm not just confused on how to do it in general, but i'm also wondering whether or not you're supposed to use certain .cab's with certain rom's and all that. Ya know?

Find out which rom your interested in using and you will usually find a faq and instructions on how to flash the rom on the first post. I use Open Touch and followed the instructions to the T on my first flash and had no problems. Like Duprade said it really isnt that hard. Dont let the big bold red messages scare you. The cooks are just covering their behinds just in case you miss an instruction and brick your phone.
islinx, whats overclock? you are in the same boat as i am (glad to have you). i have also installed some roms, but i am ready for the big facelift now. i will do some searching and try to find a cool & simple look. i ran across a "show your today screen" post, but i lost it. they had some really really nice ones. i'll check back later. thanks for all the posts.

Check the thread with all the .cab files and you'll find the download to overclock your phone.

I will be home from my trip to MIAMI tomorrow ... so who ever needs help or questions answered, just catch me online and IM me and i'll give you a hand.
Doesn't matter anymore, lol. I deleted everything off the phone, put the plastic back on and i'm sending it back today. As much as I LOVED the phone, i'm not gonna keep it and feel like I got ripped off. I used a promotional code when I got the phone. That was the reason I was getting the phone at this point in time to begin with. If I wanted to pay the normal $300 for the phone + activation, I would of went to the store and got it THAT day. But I called over the phone with a promotional code to get the Wing for $100 after $50 rebate, free activation and a free bluetooth headset or car charger. The customer service rep. told me the promotional code was taken and I was all set. I'd get my phone within 4 days. I did get it 4 days later and yesterday I called them back just to make sure the promotional code took effect and I was getting some money back.
Long story short, I must of got transferred like 7 times on the phone and I was on it for about an hour. Nobody knew what to say and I had to explain my situation each time. The customer service lady basically lied to me because the promotional code all of a sudden isn't a working one. I've seen other people online use the same code and it worked for them. Recently too. Big surprise there. If I wasn't saving money for a new car in April, I would have kept the phone. But a couple hundred dollars makes a huge difference.
Thanks for your help anyway though.

Your worst nightmare. Lost phone.

I've had the HD2 since November. This forum has been a revelation. But a few hours ago I lost the phone. It's gone for good. No insurance, no location software, unlocked, 16gb sd card. Adios amigo.
Perhaps not my finest hour. Sadly, I wasn't even drunk. Just fell out of my pocket in the taxi cab. It seems some people in Poland aren't that honest. I contacted the actual cab 20min later through the company but it wasn't there.
Anyway, I still consider myself a lucky guy. This was my first foray into the world of smartphones and through an almost free upgrade on t-mobile uk i got the phone for only 100gbp (+40 for the sd card). I bought a few apps and pirated quite a few more, so perhaps this is karma at work.
Writing this is somewhat therapeutic for me but the need to find a replacement is paramount so this also allows all you guys to share your wisdom, if you will..
No other phone matches the HD2 for screen size. It's pure luxury - ok its not AMOLED, but I've looked just now - and AMOLED is maxed at 3.7" - a significant downgrade.
The other issue is the pirating of software. I know it's wrong but I think we can all agree it's the most convenient way to test apps before buying.
However, WMP7S has left me somewhat unimpressed, I think Android is where it's at right now - development is on fire on that platform. Am I wrong? should I wait to see what happens on wm7 - i suspect that would take a year at least
So what are my options? Whichever phone I pick must be supported by XDA.... (I know I don't have many posts yet, but I chose my name for a reason... )
HTC Desire? HTC Bravo? Samsung Pico (Projector phone!!!) What's coming up?
I suspect this is the year of the smartphone and my academic year is almost up so I can perhaps hold off until the summer before buying. (Back to my w810 - still the toughest phone ever built imo)
Thanks for listening and hopefully replying.... time to roll...

I'm not proud but I'm not rich either - I'm trying to do Med School on the cheap and its not easy. If a simple google search gives me free software, only a fool would say no.
This has only been a brief visit to the Windows platform since Windows 7 came out. For 3 years prior to that I was using linux.
Virtually all the apps I use regularly,eg FPSECE, I paid for the supporter version. There's plenty of programs that don't survive more than 2 weeks.
I apologise to anyone who may feel insulted. My intent is not to steal, but to get value for money.
Is this further weight to switch to Open platforms?

You can Google a lot of things. So you should steal them? No need to respond. Just wait 10 years when you have your own medical practice and you start getting people stiffing you on the bill. They probably found your location via Google.
Touche, and a fair point. I wont try to defend piracy with any real heart - I accept it's wrong even if the end justifies the means ('end' being good software, 'means' being fracturing a few rules)
Thanks for the MyPhone tip - I've locked the phone at least.

I had a crack on my screen, it wasn't too bad and I took it to a repair place to get it fixed and they were ummming and arrring about doing it and I took the phone back and on my way across the room I dropped it and the screen shattered completely... aghhhhhhhhhhh
Then I woke up with rapid breathing and the first thing I thought was "oh thank <censored> it was just a dream/nightmare"...

Enough Already, Stop Flashing Your Phones.

I feel that everyone flashing their phones is making the phone manufactures upset. They go to all the trouble and make a nice stable, mostly usable pieces of software and you go and tear it apart and make something else.
I can imagine someone sitting at their desk now crying into their hankies saying "why, oh why don't they like my OS?
People work very hard and put their blood, sweat and tear into a project and you go and dismiss it like it's got cooties.
This is not right. Why not stay with what the cell phone gods decided we should be using? OK, fine, be that way. Never mind that different countries get different versions of the software at different times. Never mind that they work sometimes better, sometimes worse than other countries version of the OS. Never mind that some phones die when the upgraded OS gets installed onto the phone, this does not matter, it's still not right.
You bought a phone, live with the OS. I say "Stop flashing now".

I guess you don't see a little tongue in cheek when you see it.
I think the OP is being sarcastic/ironic
I'm not sure if you're being serious or if you're joking... If you're joking, then, you got me.
If you're serious, then that's absolutely rediculous. If I purchase a $500 piece of hardware, I'm going to damn well do whatever I'd like to it. I'm not leaving it up the the manufacturers to decide what software I use on my phone. (Especially Samsung - TouchWiz? Social Hub? Really now?)
If I void the warranty or otherwise render my phone unusable, that's ultimately my fault. But I'd rather bring it upon myself to modify ROMs to my liking rather than blindly allowing a manufacturer to dictate what software I use, what updates should be installed, etc.
tl;dr: If I buy a phone, it's my phone, no one elses.
EDIT: Guess you were joking... I shouldn't have typed out all that.

You gotta be kidding!
In a way I agree with you that we should respect the hardworking from Samsung engineers. But the offical ROMs were really laggy and with bugs.
Laggy, no need to explain, everyone suffers from it.
Bugs, for example there are lots of reports about Social Hub not working with Froyo. Difficulty connect to Kies! These are all the OFFICAL FUNCTIONs straight from Samsung!
XDA's ROM cooks make SGS a LOT better than just stuck with offical ROM. Don't you think we should be thankful for their hardworking, sweats, .... ?
Okay, if Samsung in the beginning made something like Froyo 2.2.1, I might stick with it. But that was only a "IF".
Farewell!

And what freaking planet do you live on? Every piece of equipment manufactured these days is altered by the end user in one way or another. Do you drive a box standard car? change the wallpaper on your home pc/ laptop, redecorate a brand new house or add a conservatory? all this is called progress and modification to the end users taste or preference.
Sorry mate but your just talking a pile of **** and it sounds like you should indeed have a iphone enjoy your box standard Galaxy S and remember not to add any new wallpapers or ringtones as thats not what God intended....

A more fool-proof way of detecting the fools is picking out the endless stream of OP's looking for help with their "bricked" phone. Literally one after the other of original threads talking about the SAME thing. Posted right after the pinned topics on how to solve most of these issues.
I know that w98seeng was joking but maybe he's on to something
I just flashed to 2.2.1, through registry hack,
man its good,
Can`t speak about GPS, but there`s no lagging in my phone,
I highly recommend to anyone not to use any custom firmwares anymore or even lagfixes,
probably they serve only for useless benchmarking, adding troubles to troubles,
Maybe Samsung finally realised how to make the phone work, and maybe Nexus S experience helped a bit..

Free Xanax or tampax

So, I'll admit I have some pet peeves around here. I hate when people assume, though I do it. I hate when people get asked the same question 5x and can't ever answer it simply, and I don't do that. I hate that there is anything 1 click or rom managing and feel that rooting has gone from something for people that want a better understanding and to get the most out of their phones, to something that all the cool kids are doing and then they can't read or comprehend what they did and then EXPECT someone to fix their screw up. I also get creating something and not receiving proper respects, and the fact that most code is copied. Hell, if it wasn't, we'd all still be on dos. Anyway, my point is this, it's even more annoying than all that to open threads that should hold some value just to see everyone comparing the size of their vaginas. So in keeping with valuable threads, everyone should start donating Xanax and tampax instead of PayPal and maybe we can get back to telling people to use search 50x a day or something?

And if some of you devs could start working some miracles, gingerbread and awesome themes and overclocking and fireratting and rooting are all great, but if you could part the seas and turn some water into wine all while reciting the Gettysburg address and standing on your head, then that would be something great to see on YouTube. Honestly though, thank you for making instructions better than IKEA. Stupid pictures with no words. How much expense could words really add after you've already paid for some child laborer to draw for you?
~maybe I set it too high...
Ok, take a Xanax n calm down... LOL. seriously tho. I feel ya, one click root should be banned. Sum ppl just shouldn't be messin with things when they have no clue what they're getting into!

I used a one click root about 9 months ago, it worked for me and I have learned a tremendous amount since then. I understand the thought that it can sometimes breed lazy root users but often it can be a tool to expedite the process and set a firm foundation for what the user will ultimately learn. This, of course, is not always the case but grouping one click rooters in to the lazy/stupid category isn't necessarily accurate either.
Since my one-click root I've dabbled into many different roms, found the ones I liked, changed recoveries a few times, used apps2sd and data2ext (ext4 and ext2) before finally finding the setup that matches my needs the best.
I understand that getting the same question 100 times is annoying, but remember that we were all new to android at some point. If it weren't for XDA, its community of awesome users, and even more amazing developers I'd be stuck with a bloated, slow Hero. I am by no means an expert now, nor will I ever be, but I learn more every day.

*chuckle* I could vent here also but I've said my peace. I've committed to at least trying to ignore the ignorance. If they don't show the board respect in those small ways then I refuse to help. My time is more valueable. I did recently in fact let it get too me too much and let y3mita try but I did get the better of him and got him banned along with the help of others that reported. Thank you those of you.

[Q] 3 Android Men on Skateboards Issue

Hi everyone. I did a bit of searching and cannot find a solution to my problem. I have been jailbreaking iPhones since they first came out, but this is my first Droid phone. I bought this phone in this condition hoping to fix the issue and use it for myself.
So far I tried pulling the battery and turning on the phone with the power button and the volume down button. I get to the same screen with the three guys on skateboards.
I understand jailbreaking iPhones and rooting android phones is completely different, but i'm confident it won't be that difficult to catch on. So anyone who has any quick tips or a solution to my issue I would very much appreciate the help.

First off a Droid, is from motorola, this phone is an android.
Second, what can you do to your phone, if anything at all.
Three, just try turning the phone on normally.
From my fist to your face, enjoy.

First of all Droid is a Trademarked from VZW and Lucas Arts. The HTC Incredible is know as a "Droid". and the DROID Charge is made by Samsung.
Second of all he told you. He can get into the hBoot, or bootloader.
Three he said said he bought with a condition that he had to fix. So i'm assuming it's pretty much all he/she can do. Quite being a jackwagon.
to the [OP], at the top of your screen you should see a .86.xxxx or a .85.xxxx or a .89.xxxx what are those numbers.
you will also see "s-on" or "s-off" which one do you see?
the reason i ask is because that will tell us what ROM you need to download and try to flash via the hBoot.

I was just trying to figure out exactly what he can do, so I can better understand the problem. Wasn't trying to start any problems with anyone. I just get a little annoyed when people call every Android a Droid, sorry if offended you or him.
From my fist to your face, enjoy.
Thanks neidlinger. So when I got to that screen with the three (An)Droid Men there was no text on the screen. I contacted HTC support and I sent them the phone since it was still under warranty. I did a bunch of searching and I do believe there is a hardware issue with the phone.
Highway. Your response was completely uncalled for. I stated in my post that I am unfamiliar with Android devices since I have primarily dealt with iOS devices. So first of all don't act like your suddenly entitled to insult and correct everyone who posts something a bit inaccurate, especially when they acknowledge their lack of experience in their post.
In my defense the first thing I said, it's something I always say,I was trying to give you some info. Not make you sound or look stupid. As for the other two, like I told him,I was trying to see what exactly you can do with your phone, so I can understand it an view it on my phone, to see how I would fix the problem. sorry if my military background is a problem with y'all, maybe for now on,I won't bother to help anymore.
From my fist to your face, enjoy.

I know this is black and white, and it's really hard to "read" how someone typed something. Rather it be in a light joking manner or full of sarcasm. We thank you for the help. It' means alot to everyone that visits these forums. But one can say "you have a face that will stop a clock" or "when i look at you time stands still". It's in essence the same exact phrase with the same exact meaning but it can be taken two totally different ways.
to the [OP], hope you enjoy your new Android phone. You'll see it has it's ups and downs to iOS. Make sure to hand around, you might learn something here and there.

It was a bit sarcasm on my end,I guess I need to work on how to type things, that sound correct an not dickish. My bad if I offended y'all in any way. Hopefully next time we won't run into this the problem ever again. So why aren't you a mod?? I seen your other post in different threads, very informative. For now on I think I'll ask you bout problems, lol (that's a joke btw)
From my fist to your face, enjoy.
