[Q][HELP] Cannot start after switching to ART (stock ROM) - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have stock ROM, not unlocked, not rooted.
Have just OTA updated to Android 4.4. It was successful.
After that I tried to switch runtime to ART. The first reboot was successful. But runtime is still Dalvik. So I tried to switch to ART again.
Now it cannot bootup. It stucked with the four-color-circle.
I tried fastboot mode. But still cannot start.
Is it totally bricked? What can I do next? I think I haven't enabled USB debugging...

You can get into the stock recovery and try clearing cache or if that fails then try factory reset.

Factory reset will wipe all your data, wipe cache will clear the apps cache so hopefully it will it fix it. Instruction to get into recovery here.

I go to the recovery mode, it says "No command".

With stock recovery once you see the android with the red exclamation you need to press power and volume up at the same time to see the commands. It's a little tricky and it might take a few tries but it does work

[SOLVED]Device stuck in bootloop

Hey guys,
Regardless of my low post count, I'm not a noob when it comes to rooting\unlocking\flashing. With that being said, I've run into a few problems with my Nexus 4. I was making a nandroid backup of my most recent CM 10.1 nightly and decided to flash back to stock rooted in order to fix my bluetooth issues. When attempting to restore, I received an error stating that my MD5 sum didn't match. This happened to all but one of my backups and it would old restore part of my data before failing on the "working" backup. It would boot just fine, but it was basically a factory image and none of my downloaded applications restored execpt the icons. I realized that this image was pretty unstable so I took it one step further..... I decided to restore to factory stock by flashing the factory images from google (I snagged a copy before google pulled them). I ran the flash-all.bat and it restored everything with no issues.....but now it gets stuck on the nexus "X" during boot. I left it for about an hour and it's still on the "X". At this point, I decided to relock the bootloader and call google.
I realized that something is probably corrupt so I called Google and got an RMA but I won't get a new phone until LG makes more Nexus 4's (Nexi?, lol).
Does anyone have any ideas what could have happened? ANy ideas on how to fix this? I'd much rather fix this damn thing instead of going thru the RMA process.
Boot into stock recovery, clear cache and factory reset. You'll be up and running.

Maybe I'm more of a newb than I realize, lol.
How do I do that via stock rocovery? I just have the red triangle. I know how to do that in Team Win and CWM, but not in stock.
Boot into the bootloader by holding volume down and power.
Use the volume key to toggle to recovery and press power to select.
When you see the exclamation. Press volume up and power to open the recovery menu.
Then clear cache and factory reset.

I went ahead and unlocked the bootloader again and flashed CWM touch in the meantime. I cleared cache and reset. Same result. It's just hanging on boot.
No you need to do this in the stock recovery.

If I knew who you were......i'd kiss ya. Thanks man. It's fixed.
Now, just out of curiousity, why does that only work in stock recovery instead of a custom recovery?
Not entirely sure. The stock recovery wipe clears everything including data/media/
There also seems to be an issue with the bootloader not properly wiping the device. Hopefully they can fix the bug in a future update.
No kiss needed. Just a thanks and a virtual high five will do.

I see what you mean about not wiping everything.....after all the wiping and flashing, it still had my same custom wallpaper from my CM 10.1 ROM when it booted. Weird.
Thanks again.
That's not because of something not getting wiped.
Its because your wallpaper syncs to Google. It's auto downloaded and applied when signing in for the first time.

New problem with phone..

My LG-E612G was restored but had something worrying saying ".android_secure.img not found! Skipping restore of .android_secure.img!"
I then just shrugged it off, but when I rebooted it and got to my unlock screen, it powers off.
I already did a full wipe and restore. Now what?

I think that means there is no file for apps on external memory, don't worry, our phones don't support that.
After a restore over time (i mean, restore a back-up from a month ago) you have to wipe cahce & dalvik cache after restore
Try it

When I return, I hope someone will have replied. :crying:
You'll get into recovery mode if you Connect your phone To the PC without battery while you press the vol. Down key. than you can restore it With kdz or LG Software update tool.

Thank you very much!
Right now it is in Download mode, and it is flashing.

Keep getting errors whenever I try to enter apps.
EDIT: Tried going into Recovery Mode, factory reseted my phone. That seems to have done the trick.

Manually boot into recovery?

I've researched it and cannot find a answer. Say if you get stuck in a boot loop and want to flash a nandroid backup or something. The only options I seen with the buttons when the device is off or whatever take you into download mode or a mode that only says factory reset.

On the Verizon model I have TWRP installed and hold power on+volume down and when it says the factory reset I just go ahead through it. The phone still has all your files. It just ends up wiping the OS.
Just my .02 cents because I've been in that position.

So if it wipes the os it leaves the phone in a permanent boot loop therefore not working if you do that, no?

You don't need udb debugging in fastboot mode. Flash the full factory image.
Nothing worked so far

Managed to flash full factory image.
When I flashed 4.3, its stucked at "Android is upgrading.... Starting Apps" screen.
When I flashed 4.2 its managed to boot successfully but I don't get the network coverage.
When i try to search network its "Error in searching network".
The baseband version is stated as unknown.
Reflash 4.3 and wait for the installation to finish. If it gets stuck on "Android is upgrading" just restart the phone. This time use THIS toolkit. it has always worked for me.
Me too did try flashing 4.3 again and again twice but still stuck up with x screen.

I too had this problem with my Nexus 4. I flashed the factory image (I tried with Android 4.2 and 4.3) with fastboot and I got exactly the same errors as you. I finally sent back my device to Google, the new one should arrive next week. I have no idea what can cause this problem :/
This thread is old, but if you have a problem with booting, you don't have to go unlocking bootloader and flashing anything if it can be fixed by just going into stock recovery and wiping cache or factory reset (you will lose apps data, but not data in your phone storage.)
Hold Power + Volume Down when the phone is off to go into "fastboot mode". Then use the Volume keys to navigate to Recovery. In there, press some combination of buttons of Volume and Power to bring up the menu (I forgot what the combination is, just fiddle around), then you can wipe cache or factory reset.
If even factory reseting doesn't help, you might need to unlock bootloader and flash factory firmware, but if you unlock the bootloader it will wipe the phone entirely and you will lose all your data. You can try to boot the phone and connect it to your PC, even if it doesn't boot fully there might be a chance MTP is loaded so you can copy files off.

You should do a factory reset in recovery before flashing. Follow the instruction here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010312, and make sure you use the correct firmware image when flashing it.

Nexus 4 Stuck on boot animation (with multiple type of rom)

Good evening guys, i have my nexus 4 dead.....
I had a lollipop official factory image installed on my n4... After some week of usage (with 0 problems) I drained my battery to 0 and since then, i had the annoyng bootloop on lollipop dots on booting.
What i did:
Restored to factory and deleted cache using the recovery system, no results
Installed TWRP, cleaned the cache and all the other stuff, no results
Installed CWM, cleaned the cache and all the other stuff, no result
Installed a fresh and new factory image, no results, sometimes the device is stuck on the dots, somethimes download the app and it locks on "Android starting app"
Rooted, then installed cyanogen 12, same, sometimes the device is stuck on the blue cyanogen logo, somethimes download the app and it locks on "Android starting app"
So now, what i can try???
It can be an hardware problem?? But what kind of hw problems?
Thanks in advance for the possible solution,
Petar

I will try this evening with the 4.4 but i'm very dubious on the results.... I will let you know
I just need to wipe the Cyanogen mod, then flash the factory over it, right?
Just reboot your phone in bootloader, connect it to pc and run the flash-all.bat and let it do its thing..

It's locked on the annoying flying dots....
